Still looks like a cafeteria. Still not the kinda place you'd have your birthday party (though let's be honest, I probably would). But...

The service is still great and the food is STILL awesome. I finally had the infamous jibarito with steak and omg, it was to die for. I ate half there (delicious) and the other half the next day (STILL delicious). I highly recommend you make this sandwich a reality.

Also -- their hot sauce. Let's talk about how I'm in love with it. Let's also talk about how you can purchase it by the bottle on-site. That's pretty much it. Guess that's all the talking about it that I need to do. And now, a moment to drool. *drools*

The first time I ever tasted a Jibarito from this place was last year during my summer clinical. A group of us would go there for lunch. The place is nothing fancy, when you enter you can see the cooks, the kitchen is right there and then, if you to to the back that's where they have their sitting area, just table and chairs put together. (Nothing more nothing less)
But I do remember that there was only one waitress that particular Saturday. They get really busy on weekends so my advice, if your on a lunch break ORDER AHEAD OF TIME! The wait for our food was longer than expected but well worth it, at least the first time I  was there it was, that's why I returned.

I have been back a few times and the wait for the food has been shortened but something seems off, I didn't enjoy the Jibaritos as I had before.
This place is ok if your in the neighborhood and are hungry but I rather stick with my local go to place for jibaritos " El Vigia."

This place is great especially if you're on a budget. We walked out of here with 2 bags of food. This place seems like it's consistently busy but with good reason. It's good ol' home cooking.

I think I could have gave this place 4 stars if the jibarito had been better, but I believe that I've had some tastier jibaritos around the city,  Also the carne frita seemed a little dry, but I might have a different idea of what carne frita should be based on other latin fried pork pieces.

But don't let the jibarito stray you away from here because their pork chop plate was awesome. Super tasty and the rice was perfect. The habichuelas were also very good. The arroz con gandules was also very tasty.

I'm not sure if anything here is especially vegetarian because even our sides had sausage (yum!) in it.

Bought the living social coupon and gave it a whirl last night.  Ordered the favorites - steak jibaritos, potato balls, rice with pigeon peas, meat pie and the tostones.  Given that I've been exposed to quite a bit of latin food, I'd have to say this was quite tasty, however, the overall experience wasn't the best of the best.  The living social link wasn't working online so we couldn't do delivery - poopers!  The decor of the place is quite cafeteria-like as mentioned in other reviews.  Also, there seemed to be 3 people on the clock, but the service was really slow as only 1 person was really helping the patrons.  Must say, the tostones were very garlicky and flavorful and not overly greasy.  The jibarito was good too and I do recommend their hot sauce.  I'd stop in again when craving p-rican food.

ive been craving a Jibarito for over 2 years and i finally decided to order one from here and it was freaken gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im very disappointment i still in the hunt for a great jibarito!! the only reason i gave this place 3 starts was because my roomie ordered the chicken and steak sandwich and it was pretty good and fresh. .. actually im going to bump this place down to 2 starts because i made 2 ordered of flan (which wasnt good at all) and they only gave me one.  i checked my bag before i left an d told them i ordered two but she acted like nothing happened and said.. oh we only had one left so thats why we gave you one.. um heeellllooo bitch i ordered two so she could have at least told me at took one of them off my bill... instead of taking it off the bill she gave me a free drink.. whatever i was so over this place i just wanted to leave.. 2 stars, dont think ill ever order from here again.

I love living in Humboldt Park for so many reasons, but I have spent a long year trying to convince my man of its charm.  Finally, after one dinner at Borinquen, and his opinion has been swayed.  If only I had known THAT was all it took, I would've taken him there long ago.

I've long been a fan of Borinquen's jibaritos (they deliver!), but when I saw an instant deal on Living Social advertising $24 worth of food for $10, I knew that's where we were having dinner.  I stopped by to pick up some take-out and came home with a steak jibarito, lechon sandwich, 2 (giant) beef empanadas, a couple of sides of arroz con gandules and two large passion fruit juices.  So. Much. Food. All delicious. ( I highly recommend getting the lechon sandwich without mayo - the meat is juicy and flavorful enough!)

It did take a long time for my take-out order, so that was frustrating, but the food was worth it.   What can I say? I'm a sucker for jibaritos and puerto rican rice, and Borinquen delivers.

The food at Borinquen is cool in my book. You get a ton of food for not that much cash. $25 had me walking out with 2 full bags of food. It's more about the quantity more than the quality at Borinquen.

First I was not a fan of the Jibarito sandwich here. I've had much better at other spots, but in the long run it was just okay and would not order it again if I came back.

What was super bomb was the fried pork chops and rice and beans that I ordered, but how hard is it to screw up fried food. It was on point!

The carne frita was sort of dry, but the best I've had in Chicago.

Service was sort of slow, but understandable. If you go there and your don't to sure what to get, then speak up and ask questions.

Overall it was a cool experience at Borinquen Restaurant.

Arroz gandules is the best of the best!

Any place w succulent lechon is AWESOME in my book!
Prior to Sunday, the only time I tried Borrinquen was at the Taste where I tried a sample size of the infamous Jibarrito. So, I wasn't sure what to expect. My bf ordered TWO jibarritos (one steak, one lechon... Both w extra garlic).... The fatty in me thought to myself: "Geez, he's ordering two!?!? Maybe i should get somethng else, I don't want to be hungry afterwards..." I glanced over at the rest of the menu. The sides looked interesting and u get to pick two with a dinner meal, so I ordered the lechon meal. I got the yellow rice w beans. Wow, I should've ordered two sides of that! I felt a little rushed so I played it safe and ordered the potato salad a my other side. (For the record... U will NOT leave hungry, congrats IF you actually finish ur entire meal!)

Our server was very nice and attentive. At first I felt rushed, but I'm sure she just wanted to get our order in before the dinner rush... Literally as soon as we ordered the back dining room filled up!

That hot sauce on your table is addicting.  I could just eat it by the spoonful.  Luckily, they sell it by the bottle at the register.

We were about to enter a food coma right at the table, and the owner came by and started chatting with us. He was VERY friendly and welcoming.  He even told us about a few upcoming projects. Can't wait to see If the food truck idea works out ::fingers crossed::

LOVE the food here. I took a long lunch on a Friday and drove 30 minutes just for the jibarito. They are so darn good.

Service: SLOW. Seat yourself (if you can find a spot). Waitress will come to you, eventually. Be patient. It is so worth it. Your meal comes with: sandwich and rice. OMG, just so good. Our lunch from beginning to end was 2 hours but we left satisfied.
I had a groupon deal. I ordered a jibarito meal for my husband. When I brought it home, he too loved it. It was his first time.

We even went to Puerto Rico over the summer and not one single soul had heard of jibaritos. I was later told that it is a Chicago thing. I don't care....just love it.

If you are in the neighborhood, check it out.

If you're looking for a tasty unhealthy choice, this is it.  Steer clear of fast food joints, enjoy a jibarito.  I heard of this place from a show on WTTW.  I love that channel FYI.  Don't let the location fool you, Humboldt Park isn't that bad.

I've never had a Jibarito, so I have nothing to compare it to.  I enjoy the Bistek Jibarito and Empanadas, my mistake fried meat pie.  I will say the steak was a little tough, but what do you expect for a six dollar sandwich.  As for the empanada, it's definitely greasy, but if you wanted organic and are a health freak, why the hell did you choose this place.

I am sad to say that I do not like this place...anymore. I use to come here before (when the other side was open) and the service was so much better but now that they serve you in the back, it's horrible. I gave it several tries and never commented on here and it just gets worst and worst that I think everyone should know about this place. There are other places to go that's better service, people and food!

I went on a Friday and there was only one waitress and the place was full. It took forever to order, get our food, even our drinks!!! Other guests that ordered the same thing got their food first which was upsetting. I felt bad for the waitress and it wasn't her fault at all and she did the best she could but no one helped her even to distribute the food.

Secondly, the place was freaking cold. I had to wear my jacket and scarf. Don't even try to go to the bathroom...its freezing and gross.

I really hoped the best for this place because they say the food is good but I suggest going to Papa Cache...very small but service is better and food is delicious.

    AVOID SUNDAYS at all costs!

My family and I have been there before but never on a Sunday afternoon.  We waited in line for about 20-30 minutes.  As we waited, there was a couple who left and complained about never being attended.  They never received any water or bread while they waited for the waitress and watched other tables being waited on.  This should have been a sign.

We placed our order and then waited for another hour for our food.  Other tables that arrived AFTER us received their food before we did.  So we got up and left.  When we left there was a line waiting all the way up to the door!  There were only 2 waitresses for the whole restaurant.  And I think 2 or 3 people in the front food prep area.

If you do during non-peak hours, the jibaritos are the best!!  That is the only thing that I get there.  Never tried anything else.

This place would get 5 stars if it weren't for the arroz con gandules.  I am half Puerto Rican and this rice does not do us justice!  Aside from that, everything else I've had is awweeesssooommee!  Must get a jibarito here since this is it's place of origin.  So much goodness packed into a tasty little package.  The pasteles here were also amazingly good and I've been to places that get it totally wrong.  The homemade salsa is flavorific and I always end up leaving with a bottle for my fridge.  It seriously go's good on everything!

This is a good place to go for great Puerto Rican food. A good value. This is where the famous Jibarito sandwich was created and its delicious!

They make the greatest hot sauce I've ever tasted. I love that sauce! It's their own brand and they sell it by bottles.

The place needs a little updating but the food is outstanding.

LMAO talk about going to Chicago to be right back at home!

This spot reminds me of 200 places you can find in Sunset Park, Bushwick, Uptown, Bronx, etc when looking for dope latino home cooking.

Everything I ate was good (by then, my hangover wore off.)

The only problem I had with the place was that they dont give you a price on your bill. You gotta go to the register to figure that part out. Kind of a bitch when it comes to tipping.

Stopped in after a long hiatus, and Borinquen was pretty close to what I remember. Tried the Vegetarian Jibarito, Arroz con Gandules, and Relleno de Papa. Could've sworn the jibaritos were bigger a while back.... Either way it was solid. Nice crunch, fresh vegetables, could've used a pinch of salt. The arroz con gandules were great, and the baseball-sized Rellenos de Papa were the evil, glutonous globes of grease, meat, cheese, and of course potato that I remember (heart attack city). For $9, we definitely got our monies worth for lunch today. My go-to P.R. restaurant when I'm ridin' through the hood.

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. Jibarito,  Shmidarito -- it was good, it was unique, it was tasty...ok:  what's everyone having an orgasm about??

Yes, the service and ambience are rough around the edges, but that's OK. It's that kind of a place.

The true highlight is the arroz served with the sandwich. Best I've ever had. Picked up a container to go.

I would definitely go again, but this is not phenomenal four star Puerto Rican cuisine as some reviewers claim it to be.

Although this spot is known for its Jibaritos, I always opt for the regular sandwiches.  Ya see, the bread is always toasty and perfectly crunchy...and tastes so good no matter what type of meat you get.  My favorite is always the lechon (roasted pork).  It was very tender, flavorful and not at all greasy.  Delicious.  The sandwich comes with lettuce, tomato, cheese and mayo.  Ask for it without the mayo...as it can get a little messy.  The sandwiches (unlike the jibaritos) do not come with a side of rice.  The arroz con gandules is soooooo goood here, so you might wanna order it on the side.

The meat patties (beef empanada-esque) were beyond yummy...as were the rellanos de papa (beef stuffed potato).  We really wanted to try the cod patties, but they were out.  Sadness.

If you're looking to dine in a hurry, try to get here during off-peak hours.  Service can get a little slow as the restaurant fills up.  You might even consider ordering take-out.

Credit cards accepted AND they happily charged 3 separate credit cards without grumbling.  Much appreciated!

The first time I tasted a jibarito was from el Borinquen. I'm Mexican but I love Latin American cuisine. I especially love arroz con gandules. So the jibarito was definitely a delightful surprise.

I just love the yummy garlic on the plantain. Upon first inspection the cheese with the mayo, lettuce, tomato, and steak seems a little weird. But when you take that first bite, yum!!! I haven't veered off of the jibarito menu just yet but I will eventually.

The inventor of the jibarito and they have a vegan version.  Sortof.

The veggie jibarito normally has mayonaise and cheese on it, but you can get it without if you'd like.  What's left is tomato and lettuce between tostones (savory fried plantains) drizzled with garlic oil.  It tasted good, but you may as well just get the tostones and garlic oil.  There are better vegan jibaritos out there, but few include the garlic oil so don't skip the original.

The sandwich does have a heaping side of beans and rice, but many of the bean choices have pork or other animal products in them, so try to get without if that's a concern.

After the Fiestas Puertoriqueñas parade, we decided to have a quick bite of lunch but wanted to sit and not on the muddy lawn. On our bikes, we headed north and found Boriquen.

First off: it's a bit confusing. It appears that you order at the window, pay to the cashier then head to the back cafeteria style. That's actually not the case -- they do have waiter service. And on this incredibly hot day, we should've opted for that.

Never the mind. At the front counter, we ordered chicken soup, jibarito of chicken a small order of lechon and arroz con guandules. For $12 we seriously feasted like kings. The food was amazing -- tender, flavorful and just flat out delicious. This was the first time I had such a jibarito that wasn't overly greasy. Just right.

Thankfully it's down the street so we'll have to come back.

    Mmm que rico jibarito!

10/24 bought a groupon $10 for $20 deal which was a good buy in my opinion....

I honestly can not remember when was the last time I had a jibarito but my oh my was I satisfied...

With my Groupon I was able to order 2 Jibaritos..2 side orders of rice...side of maduros which is sweet plantain...and a Kola Champagne

Now that's a yummy quick dinner!

    One suggestion:

When picking up your order go straight to counter where the girl on facebook is at....because you will receive no greeting or direction other wise you will feel lost...

All in all I wouldn't eat here just get my food to go!

This is definitely a gem that is sad to say very unknown to people since many wouldn't come here due to the neighborhood not being the greatest - but you would be missing out!

The jibarito sandwich and the tostones are incredible. This place is exactly how I would imagine a Puerto rican family would cook in their home. The food is authentic and tastes great. Is it healthy? Nope - but it's just too good to pass up!

Borinquen is a no nonsense restaurant that makes some delicious Puerto Rican food PERIOD.  No, it's not upscale, but who cares?  It's about the food baby!! Coming in, yes, it can be a bit confusing, but just keep walking to the back if you want to sit for your meal.

Not sure what the issue is regarding service, we get great service at Borinquen.  Very friendly, very nice, no problems.  As far as the food.  OMG, so delicious, and so much for what you are paying.  I can never decide what to get, so I usually just get a bunch of side dishes (relleno de papa, tostones with garlic [oh yeah], some pasteles, etc) and a large order of arroz con gandules and do it tapas style.  Even with that, our check is SUPER reasonable and I leave there feeling like I can barely walk from how much I ate (not good I know, but the food is that good)!

I avoid lunch time because it does get crowded, weeknights are much more reasonable.

This is our go-to place for puerto rican fast food.  One order of the lechon (pork) sandwich, a side order of puerto rican rice, a meat empanada appetizer and a large passionfruit juice please!  The pork is a little on the salty side for some people but I'm a salt lover so I think it's absolutely perfect.  The rice is fluffy and flavorful and the meat empanada is huge and crispy.  The passionfruit juice isnt the best but it's great for washing down your meal.  And everything is so cheap!  You can definitely feed two people for less than 20 bucks here and still have food left over.  The place is not the cleanest... actually it's more hole in the wall than anything but honestly I think that's where the best food comes from so it's a plus in my book.  And it's always packed with puerto rican families so you know it's good!

If you've never tried puerto rican food, make sure you check out the jibarito - chicago's claim to puerto rican fame! (it'll be hard to find this anywhere else in the country) - it's basically a sandwich but instead of bread you get two huge crispy slices of fried plaintains.

This place introduced me to the jibarito and I have been in love with this unique Puerto Rican sandwich ever since. Although I've never been to Puerto Rico, Borinquen helps me to savor the pride of the country - from the food to the display case with little candies, to the table that is cut in the shape of the island (no joke!). And the jibarito - aaah the jibarito! - it tastes like everything good.

So why not 5 stars? Well, a couple reasons. For one thing, Borinquen's prices are more expensive than other places that serve jibaritos. You might make the argument that Boriquen's is better (true), but still. It's a good $2-$3 more, which is a big difference for a sandwich.

Next, the atmosphere and service is pretty bad. When I walk in you see the kitchen first with a counter as if you're being served in a cafeteria. You have to go past that to the dining area that also resembles a cheap cafeteria. The service is very slow and the servers definitely do not make up for it with personality. Essentially the role of the server is to take your order (and that's a stretch because I get the impression that I should place my order myself when I pass the kitchen on my way in) and bring your food. They don't come back to check on the table.

The only reason why I go back to Borinquen again and again and again is for their jibaritos. They know how to make it like nobody else can! My recommendation is to order your food ahead of time and pick it up. Eating there does nothing to enhance the beauty of the jibarito.

I had my first jibarito experience here so I have nothing to compare it to. Although I dont think I want to see what else is out there! It was one of those "mmmmmmm....oh my...mmmmm" out loud experiences. Wow! Juicy tender, melt in your mouth lechon (pork) on fried plaintain with mayo, lettuce and tomato. My full belly wanted badly to make room for another. With tip, a pop, and arroz con gandules my whole bill was $10.

So being new to Puerto Rican food I had to try the famous Jibarito.  Mmmmmm it was nothing like I expected it to be but very very very delicious!  I had the steak and it was very flavorful!  I also had a PR cola which was also very good!  Kinda in a rough spot and the place is a little rough around the edges but if you wanna enjoy great PR food go to this place!

Some people turn to booze or drugs for a quick pick-me-up.

Some turn to music and the arts to uplift their mood.

    Some cry.

    Some break things.

I eat at Borinquen. The explosive flavor, authentic menu and overall taste sensation is just what I need to ease some of my seasonal affective disorder.

The service is not great. They just don't really care about silly things like "service with a smile" or "the customer is always right". They get distracted easily. They screw up your order. They put you on hold while they go have a cigarette. Whatever.

But once you get your food--Steak Jibarito, potato balls, sweet plantains, puerto rican rice--worrying about service is akin to worrying about what to wear to a dive bar: lame and a waste of time.

Call ahead. Order your food. Swing by and pick it up. Wash down the grease with your favorite alcoholic beverage in the comfort of your own home.

Caution: Order extra; Puerto Rican food is like Chinese--you'll be hungry again in an hour.

I would like to give this restuarant a 5 however I CANNOT only because of the lanuage barrier between the customer and the girls taking your orders. I have gone to El Borinquen many times since 2007 and the order takers NEVER thank me for my order nor do they seem to understand what I want on the first try which is really frustrating because I'm hoping my order is correct, and it always is. So for that I have to take off one point. Other than that they ROCK!!

The cashier is customer friendly, she's bilingual and you can tell she enjoys ALL people along with reading. Whenever I check out we talk about the books we've read and movies we've seen.

The food is always hot and package expertly. Whenever we go of course we get Jibaritos and rice, sometimes 2 orders of rice or an extra sandwich we split. If you enjoy Puerto Rican steak, and garlic I'm sure this sandwich will be a winner on your list as it is on mine. Someitmes they overdo the mayo but if you asl they will go easy.
The plantain is fried perfectly this is one of my guilty meals. So to stop the guilt on my first bite I remember it has lettuce and tomatos so its not too bad...LOL

Anyway we deserve a treat and so o you go get you a Jibarito from Broinquen...

Awesome puerto rican food here. They call themselves home of the jibaritos, which are sandwiches (meat between slabs of fried plantains and topped with garlic). Nom.

The garlic is really strong so maybe not a good place for a date.
The rice and beans and plantains were all very good.
Cheap, casual, and they have a jukebox that plays salsa and latin music. Very cute.

My puerto rican friends (from puerto rico), however, tell me that jibaros are not that commonly found in puerto rico, only in certain parts. She in fact had never had one before ever.

Some yelpers are complaining about the flavorless jibaritos, and I think I know why and would like to bring to light an important point.  They got the wrong jibarito.  In my opinion, the roasted chicken jibarito is the bombdiggity!  I think it beats the steak jibarito any day.  Give the roasted chicken (not the chicken breast) jibarito a try and I bet you'll love it.
