Borgo Antico is a few doors down from my apartment and the only place in NYC that can call me a regular.  I just took a look at the other reviews and am frankly flummoxed at how anyone can give the place less than three stars.  I'll allow that I am biased by my emotional attachment to the place, but it's delightful.

I discovered this little gem before I lived on the block.  i planned a Christmas dinner for a bunch of friends and was thrilled to discover that they offer a very reasonable group dinner option that includes a private-ish space.  I ended up on the fire escape having a long conversation with an old friend (on the phone) and they didn't even kick me out for taking my wine out onto said fire escape.

The Borgo salad (artichoke, greens, parmesan) haunts my cravings on a regular basis.  Giovanni (the owner) and his staff go out of their way to make me feel welcome and pampered.  Tables are available on the street or in the dark, cozy confines of their dining rooms.  Their bread basket comes with this tomato-y, olive oil-y, relish-y thing that is unlike anything else I've ever eaten in NYC.  What's not to love?

Pretty good Italian food - comes at a price to match. The roasted tomato soup (special of the day) was $11, but super yummy. I also had the ribeye (subbed roasted vegs to replace the french fries) and ordered it medium rare. It turned up medium, and the waiter apologized as he brought me a spanking new, perfectly cooked medium rare steak 15 minutes later. Red but not bloody on the inside. Very delish.

The salmon over rissoto dish that my BF got was bland and completely unimpressive for an $18 plate.

The tiramisu is definitely recommended. Might have been the most impressive thing they served us all night.

Generally, the place had a nice atmosphere, not traditionally Italian, but comfortable enough to sit in for a couple hours. The food took it's time to arrive, so don't come here if you have places to be.

Will probably not be coming back - because it isn't really worth the price, but if you have the $80 to spend on one appetizer/2 main dishes and half a dessert, sure - why not?

Oh yeah, they also automatically added the tip for a party of 5. Seriously, who does that?!

The food here is fabuous.  Our dinner started off with a diverse bread basket with tomato paste and a calamari salad and Bortiago salad.  All the salades were fresh and fabulous.  Aside from the meat entrees, many of the entrees here consist of homemade pastas.  Most of the items were very unique and I could tell the whole menu was prepared with a lot of care and pride.  The food can be a little slow, since (I think) they prepare everything fresh to order.  I had one of the pasta dishes and it was absolutely scrumptious.  I wanted to eat every bite slowly so I'd never get to the bottom of it!

The restaurant has two floors and a very authentic feel.  The decor of the place is very dim, which added to the feel.  The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and helpful about the menu.  The prices were a little steep, and can easily run $50 a person for a three-course meal.  There are definitely a lot of other great authentic Italian restaurants in NYC, but this one ranks up there.

I really wanted to hate this place. Had a reservation, walked in, felt ignored, had to wait a while for them to set up our table.

But then... the waiter was so charming. We were surrounded by half a room of Italians chattering loudly (which i liked because it reminded me of when i visited rome). The fettucine bolognese was sooo delicious, and so was the tomato paste that came as a side with the bread basket. The tiramisu was definitely the best part, and it was on the house after the waiter moved us away from the Italian birthday celebration crowd.

Yum. Expensive, yes, especially since the portions were not very big, but I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere upstairs.

This is one of the better Italian restaurants I’ve been to in the village. It has very traditional flavors, but what it lacks in originality it makes up for in authenticity and taste. The absolute definition of al dente in the pasta, with various appetizers and dishes that are truly satisfying. I feel I didn't see the best that Borgo had to offer, which was mostly my own fault. My choices from the menu (other than the desert) weren't my best. I had a cucumber and tomato salad as a start, which was ok, but the soup looked spectacular and I was jealous of my dinner mates.

As for the pasta, I choose an arugula, pancetta on what was essentially spaghetti. A rather poor choice on my part, which stems from my obsession with pancetta and particularly carbonara. The ingredients were of high quality, however I thought it was a poor dish. The mushroom stuffed ravioli looked fantastic and were tasty. I'll know next time.

The wine was good, and they have a wide variety of grappa, which you'll know greatly impresses me if you’ve read any of my previous reviews. The grappa choices were class and I only wish I hadn't driven into the city.

The desert is the highlight. I hate cheesecake. You can all crucify me now, but I hate cheesecake. However, I loved the cheesecake at Borgo. So light and airy with no heavy flavors. I'm not sure if they made it from mascarpone or if it was some other cheese beyond the boundaries of this world, but it was truly fantastic. Accompanied with what seems to be a strained raspberry sauce, the cheesecake was absolute perfection. I heard similar rave reviews of the other deserts on the table, but I was so enchanted by the cheesecake that I didn't have time to rip a bite from my friends. The cappuccino was quite good, and had a slight nutty flavor and not so heavily roasted which is unique. I quite enjoyed it and would have been perfect stand alone or with a little sugar.

The place was crowded, and the top floor had 4 birthday celebrations going on. I'd go later in the evening when it is a little quieter. By 10 or 10:30 it was absolutely lovely. Even better go there during the week. All the tables up stairs are pretty good and are relatively clear of traffic. The service was pretty good, but nothing worth a mention or a detailed observation.

Unfortunately, they don't particularly know how to cook.

I mean: some of the ingredients are good.  Clearly they're shopping at Whole Foods, not at Gristede's.  They just have absolutely no fucking idea how to put the ingredients together in a way that makes for an appealing dish. A perfectly good lobster, for instance, gave its life for some overcooked, sticky-ass, meant-for-your-microwave pasta.  And the poor gorganzola and risotto were starstuck, listlessly humping one another but never mating.

Plus, the service was beyond poor.  They f*cked up my friend's appetizer order, my friend told our waiter ... the waiter was a bit flummoxed but took the dish back, only to get intercepted by another bossy-waitress-type-woman who brought the dish *back* to the table to renew the debate as to whether it was our fault for getting the order wrong (it wasn't).  Charmingly, she became our waitress for the rest of the night.  Two Yelp stars were permanently lost at that point : the rest of the meal could have turned into frickin' El Bulli and they'd still have topped out at 3 stars.  But El Bulli it ain't: more like Chef Boyardee.

I went here with my group last night and the food was far from delicious, at least what I got. The ravioli with chicken, basil and tomato tasted like fish (might have been bad chicken?). I was happy I didn't get food poisoning. The service was great, apart from the waiter bringing us countless bottles of wine without asking us and then adding them all to our check. And the dishes could have been bigger for the outrageous prices.

My question: What is it about rich people who pay all this money for a big plate with little food?

This place was severely underwhelming.  I came here with a big group for a friend's birthday and it took us FOREVER to get seated.  Well, yeah, some of us were late, but even after we all showed up, we still had to wait another 30 minutes or so.  I have a sneaky suspicion that this was because our crowding around the lower level of the restaurant made it look a lot more crowded and popular than it really was.

When we finally made it upstairs, the owner didn't even make arrangements for us all to sit together.  We had to sit at three separate tables.  Great.  Eventually we figured it out, kind of.

I shared the calamari appetizer and ordered a pasta dish.  The calamari was so-so, and the pasta wasn't very good.  Some of my group really liked their entrees, particularly the gnocchi and rissoto, but I had a few bites here and there and wasn't impressed.  Everything's on the pricey side, and the wine list is just meh.

I wonder how restaurants like these survive around the Union Square area...  Especially with the astronomical rents I'm sure they pay.

You know what's pretty awesome?  Open Tables 1000 point seatings.

You know what's pretty bland? This restaurant.

You know what's actually well priced? This restaurant.

What is a yelper to do?

I wanted to like this place but fate decided otherwise.  I went to an early dinner and the place was rather empty.  The menu looked intriguing but nothing spectacular - just your usual Italian appetizers, only two salads, half a dozen pasta entries and about a dozen entrees.  The dessert menu was also pretty weak but all the standars were there. I ordered a spinach salad and the rosemary ravaioli.  My girlfriend ordered the same salad and some pasta dish with meatball like things.  She also ordered a glass of wine.  We sat back and waited to be dazzled.

But, for me, it never happened.

The bread basket arrived filled with 2 pieces of dry crusty italian bread, 2 pieces of foccaia and a pile of little bread sticks.  The bread is served with a tomato paste that reminds me of canned tomato paste.  The bread sticks and foccaia was good but the crusty bread was very dry and miserable.  I'm a bread guy - to me, good bread makes or breaks a meal.  After that experience, I wasn't too excited about what was to arrive next.

The salads were good - covered in blue cheese, big pieces of bacon, a few nuts and spinach.  It came with ridiculously hard croutons that added nothing to the dish.  The bacon was good, by itself, but didn't complement any of the other items on the salad.  The dressing was good but unmemorable.  I dislike blue cheese but it was able to eat around it.  The salad was ho-hum.

My dish arrived next.  I received 9 raviaollis in a rosemary sauce.  The food was ok but not interesting or exciting.  The portion was perfect though and I thought that was nice.  My girlfriend loved her meatballish dish and devoured it.  I tried it but, alas, was unimpressed.  The meat was a little too bland - it could have used more kick to balance out the dullness of the pasta.

All in all, it was a mundane food experience but one that I didn't feel ripped off at the end.  The 80 dollar tab for 2 was exactly what I expected to pay and it is exactly what I got even if I was underwhelmed.

Note, however, that my girlfriend had the opposite experience. She loved it and questions my judgement on all things food related. Your mileage may vary.

I was only here once, so thsi review is based on that single experience.

I went on an early Friday evening, and the place was empty.  My group had a table upstairs.  We had a nice view.  THe resturant has large windows.    We ordered a $35. cheese and salami appertizer.  The appertizer was very nice.  I did not eat any of the salami's, but my brother said they were amazing.   The appetizer dish, had four different types of cheese.  All of them very great.  The dish also came with apples, walnuts, figs, etc.  It was a beautiful presentation.  The cheese, salami, and sides, was each on different cutting board.  I ordered one of the pasta specials for dinner.

I was not to thrilled with the dessert selection.

I will say that the service was great at Borgo Antico.  Our waiter was vey young, and very curteous.

Good italian food, good service, homemade pasta, great desserts, friendly wait staff, downstairs bar.
The Pappardelle with wild mushrooms is fantasic.  The pork loin with pears is also great, although the portions of pork are a little small.  The Borgo salad is a great starter.
I've only been twice, but I'll be back.

Last night was not my first time here but this is my first review.  This place is a reliable choice.  The food is always decent, the prices are reasonable, and it never is crowded... been there on a Sat night and no waits... The bread basket comes with a tasty olive tomato spread.... the service has varied to completely attentive-practically in your face to disappeared depending on the visit.

I recommend the paradelle w/ duck ragu...

Fabulous food in a casual atmosphere.  The restaurant is upstairs; the bar and a few tables are downstairs.  I've been several times and tried different menu items, each one delicious.  The pork loin with pear and pecorino is absolutely wonderful.  I'd like to go back and eat everything on the menu.  (Unfortunately, that would conflict with my New Year's resolutions to lose a few lbs.)

The first time I ate here it was on a whim. I had just moved in across the street and my parents were visiting, the place looked quaint and we love Italian food.

We got there about 6.30 on a Saturday and were the second table seated. They bring bread slices with this amazing tomato paste that  makes the bad experiences worth going back!

Everything we ordered was delicious, steak, fish, pasta, shrimp, and a robust and interesting wine list. By the time we left, around 8, every table in this quaint and cozy joint was taken. And we weren't surprised!

The next time I visited, I was with friends and very high expectations. The service was good, yet a little aggressive. I ordered the risotto which lacked in flavor, and no else raved about their dishes either.

The third time I went  was with my parents and aunt and uncle and I felt like we were treated like tourists. Cheesy flirtations by the waiter, slightly aggressive behavior was a real turn-off. But the ultimate turn-off was when I realized I ordered a pasta that I thought was a thin spaghetti but was actually a narrow, solid, mini-penne. I hated it. I told the waiter that I misunderstood and wasn't happy, he dodged my comment by saying that's what was on the menu and then avoided our table (luckily the cheesy flirtations ended) for the remainder of our meal.

At the prices they charge, I would have thought they would be significantly more attentive and eager to please. While I realize it was my fault, I still didn't appreciate the manner in which we were treated after said complaint was gently launched.

That said, one very generous thing they do at Borgo is if they know you are splitting a salad with someone, they bring it out on 2 (or 3 if that is the case) plates already divided up for you. This is a wonderful extra that is deeply appreciate.

I will probably return to Borgo for the convenience and the ambiance, but not for a while.

I went here with friends on Valentine's Day.  The staff was friendly and we were seated promptly.

They had a $50 three-course meal for the day of love, which turned out to be fairly delicious.  All of us ordered different items.  I ordered what I thought was some sort of stuffed mushrooms for an app but it was a soup.  Surprise, surprise for me.

I was disappointed that they were out of the wine we really wanted, a Barolo.  It was the only one on the wine list as well.  For an entree I had Venison and it was really delicious.  I could've licked the plate.  One of my friends had spinach gnocchi and that was tasty as well.

For dessert I went with lemon profiteroles that were also enjoyable.

The restaurant was good and I feel it was certainly worth the money.  I say this not having gone when there wasn't a fixed-price menu.

This restaurant is a lesson in opportunity cost. It's not bad, but you walk away knowing you could have had better.

The pasta is tasty, but doesn't taste homemade. The Italian sliders had a sexy, spicy flavor, but the previously frozen french fries on their side killed the mood.

And the space has this ill-fitting feel. Somehow, their decor makes high ceilings and exposed brick seem cold and distanced instead of warm and inviting. I think it's the tables, which should be thick and comfy but instead are covered in plastic tablecloths stolen from a pizza joint. And the thin-boned chairs  complete a diminishing feel.

It's a shame, because this place has so much potential.

A winning destination for casual Italian under $100 (including a selection from their well-rounded wine list). The homemade farfalle with gorgonzola and asparagus was divine, and their meatballs will hit the spot anytime you need comfort food. Excellent, friendly service, and--earning a star on its own--you can almost always be seated immediately on a weekday, even without a reservation.

I've been here for dinner 3 times now and have never been disappointed.  My most recent dining experience at this little gem was this past Sunday - we decided to go here because they were participating in the "Time Out For Hunger" campaign (participating restaurants donated 10% of their proceeds for that day to City Harvest, which is an organization that feeds needy people).  Good food for a good cause - you can't go wrong with that combination!

The atmosphere is worth going for alone.  Borgo (or "The Borg" as my friend Pierre has nicknamed it) is located in a very charming old townhouse that really gives it that cozy, European feel.  Even if you don't want to stay for dinner, you can always enjoy a glass of great Italian wine at the bar downstairs.  The main dining room is upstairs and is very warm and inviting.  The fireplace and rustic decor really add to it's charm.

The food has never disappointed either.  Great selection of wines, yummy foccacia bread, wonderful pasta (cooked al dente) and delicious meat & seafood dishes.  I have to say that the crab cake (appetizer) is one of the best I've had anywhere.  The portions are just right - you won't find any of those trough size bowls of pasta at 3,000 calories each here!  The prices are just right as well in my opinion - quite reasonable for a NYC restaurant with such good quality food.  Try to leave room for dessert - they have some yummy homemade goodies as well as a good selection of gelatos.

The service is just as good as the food.  The waiters are all charming and attentive, but not overbearing.  The only thing that struck me as odd about the service here was the whole wine serving process.  The waiter just brought us the bottle we ordered, proceeded to open it and just pour, without letting someone at the table try it first to see if it was good.  If I'm paying $40 (or more) for a bottle of wine, I really would like to be given the chance to see if I like it first, thanks.  Also, the waiter seemed very inexperienced at serving wine, which I know cannot be true since he's been working there for quite some time now.  He just kept pouring and filled our glasses up way to the top (instead of just pouring a small amount as one should when one properly serves wine in a wine glass) - my friend Pierre had to tell him to stop pouring at one point!  You would think they would train their staff on how to properly serve the wine considering the prices they are charging and the whole European atmosphere they've got going on.  Though, I have to say that this only happened the last time we were there - the other times we've dined here, the wine was served to us properly, so I can't deduct any points for that unless it happens again next time ;-)

Despite initially being sat at the most awkward seat in the world (table for 2 right at the foot of the staircase), Borgo Antico turned out to be a pretty good experience.  It was our 2 year anniversary and my bf and I were craving pasta and we were sick of repeated trips to the neighborhood Italian eateries (Otto, Piola, Osso Bucco, Patsy's.. etc) so we made a game time decision about Borgo Antico.  I have to admit, I've lived in the Washington/Union Square area for the past 10 years (yikes!) but I have never heard of this place.  We took a chance and booked a reservation on Open Table, not knowing whether it'd be crowded... first impression?  The space was really rustic looking and homey.  I felt instantly comfortable... UNTIL I saw "the table."

Granted, there are NO 2 person tables at this place.  Or at least none the night we were there... there was a table of 12 or more that looked like they took all the 2 seaters and smashed them all together, so it left 1 lonely table next to the staircase.  AWKWARD!  I never do this, but I complained... the waiter told us there were no other 2 seaters, however - the dining room was almost empty!  And yes, I did contemplate and maybe even motion to my bf that we should leave.  I would NOT sit at that table by the stairs next to a rowdy table of 12 on our ANNIVERSARY!!!  The maitre'd saw this and immediately apologized for the awkward seating and sat us at a lovely round table for 4.  (as a note, a few other couples walked in after us, all rejecting that table.  so we weren't being crazy!  the table of 12 eventually took over that table for late arriving guests... good thing we weren't in it!)

On to the food.  Good, solid Italian.  I'd rank the food here as BETTER than all of the other Union Square Italian options I listed earlier, aside from Otto.

For appetizer we shared the cheese and salumi plate - REALLY good!  It was great to eat and share.  Too much for 2 people but had a good taste of everything.  Really want to return for the appetizers next time.  Dinner, I got Linguini with Vongole - really stellar.  Still, that table situation lingered in my mind.... sad how a service issue can kill a great meal, no?

Had a delightful dinner there recently. Enjoyed the neighborhood vibe, the cozy atmosphere, and the genuine service. I liked my spinach salad, which came with apple and gorgonzola, as well as my pasta entree, which was perfectly al dente and whose red sauce was divine. I tasted a few forkfuls of the special risotto (with radicchio and duck breast) and it too, was delicious. The wines by the glass were generous pours, and we enjoyed the bread basket and spread. It just seemed like honest, cozy, solid Italian food, minus any pretension or extraneous flair. This might just be my new downtown "go-to" for homey Italian.

Aside from the potentially off-putting occurrence of us being the only patrons at Borgo Antico for lunch, I would definitely say I am a fan of this place.  The service was pretty good (well, ok, that's not saying much since we were the only ones there)-- the waiter definitely kept the wine flowing (very, very important measure of service quality in my book).  The food was even better.  The salumi and prosciutto to start were tasty, and the eggplant-laced tomato sauce on my pasta was delicious.  The fettuccini with bolognese sauce looked simply amazing.  The portions were perfectly sized-- not too big, not too pithy.  Would definitely return again.  Especially since it's apparently a great place to hide out from the office during business hours!

I wanted to give this restaurant more stars, for its wonderful decor and friendly ambiance. (The plates, even, are worth checking out - beautiful blue patterns.) The pasta dishes my friends and I ordered were tasty and filling, and our waiter was attentive. However, my boyfriend ordered the lobster special, which had lobster in its shell doused in sauce. I mean, how are you supposed to hold onto the lobster to crack open the shell? It made for a messy and frustrating experience that the waiter shrugged off.

A nice little italian restaurant, that I wouldn't go out of my way for, but is a nice place if your in the neighborhood. The menu doesn't stray too far from the norm, but the food is for the most part fresh and delicious, just not overly memorable as far as italian goes. I haven't been back in a while but I wouldn't mind going there again.

decent italian food with a really nice dining room.  pretty quiet relaxed atmosphere.  spaceous and airy.

    good service very attentive

sedaninialla siciliana is perfect.  the pasta is just right al dente.  the eggplants are really delicious in the sauce.

pan seared branzino was really good with the putanesca style sauce which is usually made too salty in most palces but done well here.  the grileld vegetables were cooked well but would have liked it more flavorful.

i'll definitely be back to try some other dishes

Mediocre food, decent service, cute space (two levels - wish some nice views of the street).  Not particularly welcoming place - though the ambiance is nice.  The food was really unmemorable - the salad was not particularly well done.

I wanted to like this place, but at the end of the night, I won't be coming back.

The place is cute enough, hidden on a street that I rarely ever walk down. Consists of 2 floors.

I had a pretty tasty lump crab cake, that was probably 98% crab meat. I'm not a fan of those crab cakes that are really bready.
I also had the fettucine bolognese pasta dish, and this is where their downfall is. I like my pasta al dente. I don't think any respectable italian restaurant cooks it any other way. So imagine my surprise when I take my first bite, and the pasta is over cooked. Just ruins the whole meal. Nevertheless, I ate the whole thing because I was hungry. Was it just my dish? Nope, my friends dish was overcooked as well.

    *sigh*

I have now been to this place twice. The first time wasn't great, but the second time I had a wonderful experience. The food was great. It has a lovely neighborhood vibe where people know each other and introduce themselves to one another. I'm glad I gave this place another chance.

Good food, good wine, good prices and good service!  I have absolutely no complaints about Borgo Antico.  It's intimate and romantic enough to take someone on a first date and it's big enough to go with a large group of friends.  My friends and I enjoyed our meal so much that we didn't realize that we were the last table there and, amazingly enough, we weren't pressured to leave.

Went here a while ago, maybe 9 months? Due to this I do not recall exactly what dishes we had. I do remeber it being my least favorite Italian food I've ever had in a restaurant....I like Olive Garden better.

Ewww! This is a waste of cute space. The food, service and beverage are below par. The 'chef' has the highest degree of 'body odor' and if that does not kill your appetite, the food will. Used to be good, what happened?? The pizza is alright.
