When driving from Rapid City, SD to see Mt. Rushmore, you will drive through this little town called Keystone. It's cute, quaint, has souvenir shops, and a good bar (well, so this local told me - haven't had a chance to try the bar yet).
The Borglum Historical Center is in the center of this, has plenty of parking out front and 3 hours free if you shop there. The best thing is, they have great souvenirs, magnets, t-shirts, and gorgeous hand crafted jewelry. I went TO TOWN here! I picked up some reasonably priced items for my co-workers, a magnet for my fridge (I collect these from the places I visit), and 2 beautiful handcrafted necklaces. The prices were so reasonable, the staff was helpful, and the selection was very good.
The center even has two cheesy places to take photos of yourself has a head on Mt. Rushmore, or in a BIG Giant chair.
Plus, there is no hyper-vigilant rent-a-cop stalking you to make sure you don't leave the property with your car still parked their. So, you can peruse the other shops in town for a while.
In the words of wise Borat, "Very nice!" -

We've visited Mt Rushmore several times over the last few years but had never stopped at the Borglum Historical Center until this visit. If you are at all interested in the history of Mt Rushmore's sculptor I would recommend a stop here. The entry fee - $9 for adults when we visited - provides you with an audio guide that takes you through a maze of displays and ends at a short movie and gallery of additional works by Gutzon Borglum.
There are also a few bronzes and statues outside of the Center including a copy of the seated Lincoln and a relief of Borglum and his son Lincoln which are free to view and photograph.
