Had a lot of fun!
It definitely wasn't as big as heavenly but this is definitely a great place to practice park skiing and snowboarding!
The runs are organized: Bunny slope, beginner, intermediate and advanced runs. I liked it because I could practice my jumps and boxes without getting in anyones way and without that added pressure to perform to some expert level when I'm ljust earning.
Definitely will be back! -

Boreal is great for anyone just learning to snowboard or ski, plus the lift tickets are a lot cheaper than the bigger resorts.
The lifts are really slow and gives you enough time to get off. A lot of their runs are short and moderate. I'm just learning how to carve on my toe edge so these runs are perfect for that purpose.
I've only been up to the red runs and don't really know how the Black Diamonds are.
They also have a terrain park with a Core park, Shred and Mini-Shred parks as well as a bag jump.
The only thing I really didn't like were the flat areas. It gets sooo exhausting having to skate through all that. Also, after a while, the runs tend to become a bit boring (and mind you, I am not a very good boarder!)
Food is your typical snow resort food---burgers, chicken nuggets, salads and such. But their price is actually a bit lower than the other resorts I've been to. -

My first time snowboarding. I was very nervous and excited at the same time! My boyfriend invited me along with mutual friends. It was pretty awesome starting with the short ride there compared to other places. This was fun, because it was the first time I went anywhere outside of my hometown with friends. So leaving my city with a group of friends for a road trip was exciting altogether. About 2 days, Friday night we left. Saturday, all day, snowboarding. Sunday late afternoon/ evening came home.
I was freaking out, because I was trying to find ski lift tickets the day we were leaving. Every place I looked had sold out. Which I felt bad about. My sister warned me that snowboarding might get me frustrated, so she suggested me to bring my stepdad's skis just incase I give up on snowboarding. Seeing the snow everywhere as the scenery changed, was so breath-taking :D
The parking lot was full to the brim, so we parked kinda in the backside. The cool thing, I was expecting the ski lift tickets to be around $49-50$/ ticket. Found out when I went to pay it turned out to be $36/ ticket. Certain days and times, they give like specials. I found out this place wasn't as big as Sugarbowl. I went to Sugarbowl 2 years ago, and it had trails full of snow. Boreal was small, but it was perfect for me learning to snowboard. My boyfriend was a great help. He was patient and watched me when I tried and fell several times. I face-planted so many times, I'm actually still sore too.
My boyfriend's 2nd time snowboarding, Another friend, it was also her first time. We both laughed and fell so many times. i got the hang of riding on the edges and the use of my heel to stop. I love the price & plan on coming here again. Thank you for being good to me Boreal
P.S. I already miss the snow D; -

My favorite ski resort! I always come to Boreal because it's not too far of a drive, the slopes are for the most part always groomed, and the ski lift attendants are always nice and friendly.
Whether you're a beginner or an intermediate skier or snowboarder, Boreal has got you covered. They even offer night boarding, which is awesome. Boreal is never way too busy, and you can always find a slope that's right for you. Stay away from the cafeteria though, and pack some of your own food.
Students: Bring your I.D. on Fridays and get a lift ticket for only $15! -

Great resort for Beginners / Kids!
The mountain is quite small, but it is the perfect place to start... they offer many beginner packages that come with lesson, equipment, and lift ticket... for a pretty good price. I see plenty of families coming here to take advantage of the pricing...
The mountain overall is a bit small, run are decently sized, but as your skills progress you'll find yourself wanting something bigger. The park is fun here, and the night riding is a nice bonus option (I have not tried it yet though).
I spent my first 2-3 times boarding here, and soon starting choosing Northstar instead for the terrain (only 20 minutes extra driving)
If it's your first time boarding, or if you don't have equipment, come to Boreal! It's also the closest resort coming from the Sac/Bay Area, so you'll save time on driving. There's also plenty of room for the non ski'ers/boarders to play around in the snow. -

I learned how to ski here and thought it was really friendly for beginning to intermediate skiers. It will probably be just my speed for some time to come thought I can see that I'm likely to outgrown this place the better I get.
The best deals are the lesson/gear deals. Now here is the kicker - you don't need to take the lesson if you don't want. They do have a deal where you take three lessons and then come the fourth time you get a season pass for free. That sounds pretty good to me. -

Convenient location. Friendly staff. Great for beginner boarders/skiers.
The bad news: filled to the brim with families who take over every conceivable inch of space with zero consideration for others. My boys wanted to just sit down for lunch and could not find 2 seats! I noticed several tables had been turned into what appeared to be portable Chinese restaurants; complete with rice cookers!!!! When I asked if they would please move their cooking utensils I got the blank stare. When I saw someone changing a poopy diaper at another table we decided to tailgate!
People. You just gotta wonder. -

This is THE place for beginner's and people who are only looking to get a few early hours in. The place is super close to the Bay, it's easy to find and the prices are ridiculously low.
Some lowlife gave me a look of pity at a ski shop when I said I went to Boreal. (Only people looking to flash money do that and buy brand new boards when they've never been up to the mountains by the way.)
I hadn't been up to any mountain in years and definitely needed a lesson in how not to be the catalyst to an avalanche. My instructor James was super helpful and very patient. I'd send all my cute girl friends his way as thanks if they were interested in snowboarding this season.
The staff was definitely fun and friendly and the short lines and spacious runs made it a fabulous setting for a refresher course. -

My first experience with snowboarding was at Boreal!
When I look back now, I loved every moment I had snowboarding down the easy slopes. Although I did make myself fall down a lot, snowboarding is awesome!
The workers I interacted with are all very nice and helpful. I'm clumsy, so there were a few times the workers had to help me back up.
I hate the lines to go on the lifts because people usually force themselves in to get pass you so they can go first.
For lunch, I ate a Boreal burger. I thought it would be something unique since it had their name and all, but it turned out to just be a cheeseburger.
The resort is small, but the prices are cheap! -

I. Reasonable prices, save $40 - 50 by choosing Boreal instead of Northstar or Heavenly.
II. The closest resort for those coming from the Bay Area - 3 hour drive, compared to Northstar's 3.5 hours. Makes it convenient for day-ski trips. It's also right off the highway.
III. Excellent bunny hill - not overly flat and boring, but easy enough for first-timers (like me!) to get the hang of the board/ski.
IV. Convenient rental system.
V. Not very crowded - little to no waiting on the lifts.
VI. Despite not having snowed a lot this year in the area, the resort still had the major runs open (beginner & advanced).
VII. Good & reasonably priced foods.
VIII. FREE Ski Check! Excellent - don't want to lose my gear!
X. Extensive freestyle terrain park for those wanting to attempt tricks.
One gripe: The access to the beginner run chair is extremely inconvenient on skis, because you have to climb up to get to the lift. Painful on the legs & wrists. Please fix this design error.
Superb place for beginners & intermediate riders! -

We love Boreal. We like leaving our kid in all day lessons. Shawn and Tony are great snowboarding instructors. My son thinks that they rock! The restrooms are relatively clean. Parking is great because it's a smaller resort. We think this resort is awesome because we can just do day trips to Truckee. It's affordable which is great for our little kiddies. But beware of affordable because the clientele can get a little ghetto. But for easy short rides, this place is awesome.

With the discounted price in BOREAL compare to others within Lake Tahoe, it is definitely worth a day trip here!
The runs are fun and long enough to take on the speed and ramp into the terrain parks on the side. The facilities here are good enough to cater for all needs. Although not too fancy, but hey, I am buming in for skiing only!
The tubing isn't that fancy, but again, it is good enough to keep the young one happy, as well as some family battle!
Worth the money, and it is just off the HWY on your way to San Frans!

The mountain isn't so big so for a beginner this is a great place to learn. The night boarding is a deal for $26. It is a lot closer to drive to when coming from the Bay Area. There is a separate bunny slope and they have the lifts that take you all the way to the top. It isn't the fanciest resort but if you just want to board for a day trip this is great place to check out.

Had the time of my life! Came here last Friday and was pleasantly surprised that the lifts are a lot cheaper that what I would have expected. The lift attendants were very helpful and I really enjoyed it except that the place was too crowded that day, maybe because it is so affordable. Their food on the second floor was okay but not so good but still, I love coming back to this place...

Got kids? Then I think this resort is a great place for families but I would avoid the busy weekends and holiday b/c it does get jam packed and you could seriously have a head injury with someone whapping your head when they carry their boards, skies, or poles around without taking note of something called personal space or even worse, not notice your little person in tow and whap their little faces.
Distance: Not a far drive from Sac town. At it was 2 hours from where we started was plenty long for my two.Went up to today b/c it is like right there before you get to Reno so it isn't far away from 916 or 707.
Good Value The 1,2,3 deal seemed like a great idea and incentive to have 3 classes and then when all is said and done, bam a season pass! I like the check in check out and get your stuff and mosey to the kids class area. Now checking into the kids class was another story, and this is where I have to ding them a star because it was a cattle call to process the children into their groups and then line them up to their respective classes.
Speaking of times: On the busy periods of the seasons, they add more classes with later start times. I don't know about you but the last thing I want to do on my day off is get up super early. The last class offered at Boreal is 2:15 pm SWEET!
Staff: For over an hour I couldn't see where my child was and finally I found a Boreal staff member who explained what hill my child's group was in. Of course I had to go back into the building to buy a pedestrian pass to access that hill which was cool, no problem. By the time I spotted my kid on his board the class was 15 minutes shy of being 'done' but the most super fly instructor by the name of Dustin Scheudler (or something like dat!) took the kids up the lift just one more time so that I could get it all captured on film. I am forever grateful that he did this because the it was so worth seeing the kids come down hill (by the way, there only 4 kids total in the group...most kids where in the sky classes and not boarding classing). So yes, big props to Dustin Scheulder (or something like dat last name).
My kid didn't want to leave, he wanted to come back the next day (not happening) and if I kid feels this way then it must mean that the experience was good.
Parking: PS I wanted to go to another resort but the parking situation seemed so horrible and that is the last thing I want to do is carry back very tired kids to the car after a day on the snow. The parking at Boreal is OK..gets full so be patient and wait and something will open up with ten minutes. -

This place was perfect for the skill level in our group. The price is good too. The only thing that wasn't great and probably isn't expected to be is the food. Beyond the nachos the other stuff was very cafeteria- kind of pricey too but..where else are you gonna go? The location is super convenient right off 80 and it is such a quick trip from the Bay Area.

My boyfriend is an avid snowboarder and felt that Boreal would be the perfect resort for me to learn to board myself.
Let me tell you, Boreal is the absolute perfect resort for beginner skiers and snowboarders which is why they deserve five stars.
For starters, they are conveniently located right off the I80 so you don't have to worry about taking more dangerous roads to other resorts.
They offer great prices. As a beginner boarder myself, they offer a great lesson package called 1-2-3 Ride Free. Basically it costs $120 and the way it works is if and when you complete three lessons (ski or snowboard) you receive a season pass for FREE. My boyfriend even decided to do the 1-2-3 Ride Free package (he just did the skiing lessons instead) since it was such a great deal for a season pass.
We both have our own equipment, but I do remember that they offer rental gear for really cheap and the day lift tickets for adults are around $60 bucks.
Boreal is a small resort, but like I said, it is perfect for beginners. They do have a couple of runs that offer some very large jumps and areas for tricks. However, this place can become boring for a more advanced rider.
The lodge is large and the food is a little pricey considering what you're getting, but it's still pretty good. Plus you can enjoy beer on the upper level while you eat, watch other riders and take a break.
Overall staff is very friendly, especially my former instructor, Hunter. He's become our fun and friendly acquaintance every time my boyfriend and I are at the resort.
So if you're looking to learn or simply grow into your skill, this is the place to go. -

Yes, its tiny.
But its also CHEAP!
And on the weekdays as of late, no one is ever there.
Great park. Laid back attitude. I'd give it 5 stars if I hadn't fucked my knee up there like a champ the last time I rode there.
It can get to be a bit much on the weekend during the high holy days. With it being the first thing most tourists hit on the way to Reno from the Bay Area, it quickly becomes over run by gapers and Asian tourists with no clue.
I mean really no clue. So much so that they seem to forget that walking down the middle of the street in the parking lot will get them run over.
To combat this venerable retardation in 1980's ski pants, or even better scotch guarded jeans and Raider satin jackets, I just don't ride there on weekends or during the holidays. However, if its a week day in the spring, and you just want to ride park, and you didn't buy a season pass, this is an easy "set the cruise control and go like a beast" up the freeway place to ride.
No frills, no bones, no bullshit. Now get out there and ride, or find a cute asian girl to ride, whatever does it for you, I'm not judging. -
Review from Joey S.
Boreal is a small resort. It may not have all the amenities of other resorts, but it makes up for it by not having a normal resort price. Benefits:
1. The resort usually has a majority of lifts open and numerous trails to choose from.
2. This is the only resort that has an ongoing deal: $15 all day Fridays, 3 days for the price of two iRide, and $25 night runs from 3:30-9pm.
3. It is really easy to get here from the Bay. It is just 3 hours in and easy to access. If it is too dangerous to get anywhere else or you're just plain lazy, this is a good option as you just hop off the 80.
Yes, it can get a little azn because of the deals. I saw on my Ski Report app that someone said they were "borientals." This app usually gives you good updates on Boreal as well.
The only con to this resort is that lines can get crowded if not all lifts are open and if it hasn't snowed in a few weeks it can be really icy, which is not particular to this resort.
I would highly advise to keep an eye on your board or lock it up as I had a friend get her brand new board stolen here after a few runs and one trip to the lodge. -

Boreal is a superb ski/snowboard resort for the beginner.
First, it has an extremely convenient location off of 80, so if you're not serious & you don't have a AWD/4WD vehicle w/ snowtires, it's not super dangerous to drive here. Conditions on 80 can get bad, not but as bad as 267 & 50 when visiting the other more "seasoned' resorts.
The park is cheap, adult lift tickets are $56, and if you get the season pass during that 1-2 week period post season, they are ~$260. Damn near half the price of it's competitors.
Cheap to get to, cheap to rent gear, cheap for a lift tickets - you really can't choose a better resort for a beginner.
With that being said, Boreal is a very small resort compared to the rest. It's kind of like high school, once you graduate, you are nostalgic, but you don't really want to come back. Still, you will have a BLAST here as long as you're not an experienced snowsporter. -
Review from Karen L.
Haven't been to the snow in years and we finally came to this place for sledding!! I'm a horrible skier but haven't learned how to snowboard yet so we decided to sled this year!
The resort was packed, super busy, and quite nice. It's good if you don't want to make the drive ALL the way OUT to Tahoe and if you just simply want to play in the snow. This place is separated into the ski, snowboard, and sledding zones. If you get hungry the food court is located in the main office where all the rentals are. The menu options are decent and food is pretty good, but of course expensive.
We went to the sledding/play side. For adults, it's $25 per person with "lift tickets" for 2 hours. It's really just a ramp that you stand on while you drag your sledding tube. This is great if you don't want to ski or board. It is VERY SAFE for young children and pretty much everyone of all ages.
They have separate hills, a total of 4 or 5 with different difficulty. Most children just stay on the first and second hill.
The only thing that's annoying is the lines, it can get pretty long. You get in the line to get a tube, go up the lift, sled down, pass on the tube, and get back in line. It gets repetitive but it's fun option if you didn't wanna do anything else. Lastly, if you just wanna play in the snow it's ten dollars to just get in the play area. -

I came here for my birthday on January 29. I have never snowboarded or skied. I have gone tubing once ever. I came here and took the beginner class. you get the class+lift ticket+rental=$70!!! such a great deal!!!
The helmet is $5 extra and I suggest you get it!!
If you are a beginner I would suggest you going on a weekday....it really was hard to try to learn on the bunny slope on a Saturday with people sitting all over the hill. I had sooo much fun!!
I even tried tubing. All in all a great deal. Once your done falling the bar upstairs was also good = ) -

I dragged the kids up here.... We left at 5am from Los Gatos and got there at 815. There was an amazing deal where the my 12yo got snow board etc and lessons for two hours (group of kids) for $25! I actually made money 'cuz we were both so surprised my son bet me $100 there had to be more we hadto spend. (just kidding!). Seriously, $25 and he ski'd in the afternoon, too. His instructor offered to take him on more challenging runs after the lesson on his off time since he felt my son was held back by another kid. His name is John and that is an amazing offer! I am so amazed when young people can have so much in them to share their enthusiasm and teach. Anyway, I took the little kids to the tubing runs which was fun for them.
Good food at the lodge- seemed to be very well run at the rental place....
I will definitely bring the munchkins back here for quick trips - they had a blast for the first time back to the snow in a couple of years -

Pretty good price for the time you get on the slopes. There are a lot of runs, mostly for beginners. The runs are pretty short. You can go to the back side of the mountain (if you hate long lifts, then I don't suggest running the backside). There's a mini half pipe and a big half pipe, a lot of rails and jumps for the more advanced and HUGE jumps for the VERY ADVANCED.
We went on a night run, which I don't suggest unless you are pretty good. After boarding all day and being really tired, night runs can be a little more risky. Also, there is a skeleton crew on hand, so if/when you get injured, it'll be much harder to get some help.
The lodge is okay, gets really crowded. There's a bar upstairs, but nothing really comfortable like North-Star. Its one of the closer resorts coming from the Bay, so I would say its pretty average. -
Review from Pam S.
This is my first choice for winter fun if I have my kids along. It's only 3 hours drive from San Francisco.
The resort is not bad for first time skiers or snowboarder learning the sport.. You can take advantage of cheap lessons and lifts. My son took his first ski lessons here. It was a full day lesson for $90 including lunch, day rentals and ski lifts. This could be considered day care time, actually gave us adults a chance to head out and snowboard.
They also have a snow park for tubing or just to play. Great for younger kids or for those who just wants to see and feel snow. -

Boreals freaking friday is a great sweet deal for people not looking to spend too much and have a budget to have some great fun in the snow.
Its 15$ every friday with student college id/military ID's. My first time here experience was great except for the people that work their seem to hate their jobs.
but other then that the course is very good for beginners. If your looking to learn snowboard/skii.Its also not very crowded at all.
Pros-
Cheap/Low Price
Fun
Beginner
Easy to fun
Cons-
Most workers their are very Cool..not very talktive..
You get random stares from workers from the rental guys -

Close to the Bay Area and very affordable compared to other resorts. Still early season conditions with only 3 lifts open. It was very crowded today, day after Christmas. 2 minutes to come down the slope, 20 minutes to wait for the lift.

Great for Students looking for an inexpensive time to go snowboarding/skiing!
We have been going there since 2007 and have had a blast everytime! On fridays they have discounts for students. Sadly it went from $10 to $15 ...to $20? I'm not sure about that but it did go up because of the economy.
Anyways! Best to go after a good snowstorm because the powder is awesome! We've always gone during the beginning of the new year so like Jan-Feb. Also good for beginners and intermediate because this place is more forgiving about getting in someone else's way...some people are jackholes who think they're good but stick to the smaller slopes (you wussies!) and get annoyed at people on the bunny slopes. HELLO!
Fun times and memories are to be made here :) One of the few places that keep it real and available for snowboarders and skiers.
Just make sure you watch your board cause people take advantage of those snowboard racks :( what happened to the good will people? Just to make a buck off someones used board? That's mess! Once we left a rented board on the rack and someone STILL took it ... -

I like this place because I am a advanced beginner. I do not go on any black diamonds, mainly blues and greens. Boreal is a great place to learn to ski/snowboard and it is cheaper than most other resorts nearby.
I went skiing on a Saturday and booked a full day pass. There is night skiing, but only the middle lifts, I think the 2 beginner and the Accelerator lifts, remain open. You can get a pass for free if you come back another day and the 3rd time is free.
Area for improvement are the signs. I noticed that on some of the lifts there were missing signs as to what level of difficulty you were to expect at the top. When you got to the top, there were missing signs as well to show which areas were what difficulty. At one point, I went down one area to find out that it was a black diamond and ended up walking back up to the locate the green runs. Also even though it was not yet dark, some of the lifts ended up closing earlier than I had hoped.
You should come here for some fun and basic skiing/snowboarding. There is a half pipe and ski park for people to do jumps, tubing area, and also a lodge where the non-skiers can hang out. -

The first time I ever came to Boreal had to have been at least 7 years ago...I brought my son to to his first time in the snow and to take lessons for boarding. He had a blast making fun of me fallin on my butt while he was making turns already. I love how quickly the kids can pick it up! It's amazing how fearless they are.
Their chicken tenders is the extent of their food I tried, as it and fries were bought for everyone one trip and they were both actually pretty decent.
So at least 7 years later, still love how Boreal is gentle on my butt. Great beginner resort. And though I still fall every now and then, I'm gratefully carving the mountain now. I absolutely LOVE their Spring night boarding...jus wish more of the runs were open for it.
Will definitely be back! Especially since it's so conveniently right off of 80. -

We will never come back!
Too crowded!
Too long lines(45min wait to get to the lift!)
Too many thieves!!!
My husband fell, and lost his eyeglass. He took of the snowboard to search for it, when he stand up the snowboard slipped and slide down by itself. Only a couple yard away, someone slide down, and took the snowboard, and ran away with it!!!!! It is shocking!
The food is very expensive and the portion is very small for that price! And... they use a lot of MSG!
Some worker are nice, but some are very very very rude! -

We love this place. Aside from what other reviewers have mentioned about Boreal, the positives all being true, we had the fortunate experience of seeing a staff member there for many years. He taught my children how to ski/snowboard along with his other students. Now, my children associate their level of experience to Boreal, and they enjoy returning there to continue to develop their skills, e.g. pipe.

We are not the Ski guys to call it, so I've search the online for a family oriented snow place to have fun with my family. I've found what they call the Sno-Park @ Boreal, so we went there not knowing what to expect. And I am so thankful we've gone there because the family had a blast using our sled and honestly speaking, It's the first time we've done that for all of us. A nice place! We will surely gonna go back in there. For just a $5 parking fee, It's all worth it for a day of fun at the Sno-Park with the whole family especially our little 3 yr old kid.

We're only reviewing the Playland Tubing facilities at Boreal here. We have small kids (6, 4) and were excited to try tubing for the first time at Boreal. There are plenty of opportunities for improvement at this facility. First, the teenaged boys who were employed there were unhelpful and surly to a person. When they were watching the activities (which they should have been doing more diligently to prevent kids from getting run over by flying tubes), they were mainly screaming at people. They didn't offer assistance to newbies of any sort (like telling us which run might be safest for a 4 year old). They seemed wholly unhappy to be at the facility and took it out on the guests. The missed opportunity is that this facility has nothing but tubing ramps. They all have roughly all the same degree of slope (steep), which means that adults and kids all fly down at equal speeds. For some kids, it was just too terrifying. A $25 mistake. For $25 per person (for 2 hours), the facility should offer other slow activities. Build a few igloos or ice sculptures, have a few snow games available. Offer something besides endless tubing.
