I cannot believe its closing....I was looking forward to coming in here after coming back from Argentina where all the books are expensive (in pesos) and you cannot even find half the books you find at Borders.
This is a sad, sad news.
Goodbye old friend -

Aww, how sad. This location is closing. Just got the email from Borders announcing it.
http://ebm.e.borders.c...
According to the email:
* The going out of business sale starts Friday, July 22.
* Gift cards will be honored during the liquidation sales.
* Borders Rewards Plus members will continue to enjoy their Borders Rewards Plus discounts through August 5.
* All Borders Bucks will be honored until they expire on July 31.
I wonder what will take its place. It won't be the same without you. Goodbye, Borders. -

They stuck around for a long time, and I too feel sad that they are closing. I've had good memories here as a lowellite way back when. Where will we all go now to check out new books, magazines, DVDS/music, read comics, anime, manga, and grab a cup of coffee all while surfing this store? I don't know. Probably across the street to the stuffy small library? Eek.
My experiences here have always been good. Employees were helpful, friendly, and never too pushy. Layout has been suspect lately, but more or less the layouts made good sense.
Sorry to see you guys go. Support your local Border stores while they're still around. -

Many times over the years I have come in here to get a coffee and wander the isles. So it was always kind of a mess, the staff was never very friendly, and I only came in because the location was convenient....but it was a bookstore. And I always liked the feel of Borders and their organized chaos with an SBC Coffee inside.
Came in the other day while killing some time on a weekend trip to the city. It was again a mess, but to be fair everything was on sale because they're closing. I'm sorry the people here are losing their jobs, and I am sorry one more store has to close its doors. RIP, Borders.
But hey - GREAT sale prices before they close their doors so c'mon down while you still can!Listed in: The Bay Area

Good bye Borders.
I got to run my fingers through your pages. Nice!
I got to peer into your thoughts. You were an open book to me.
I got to browse through a real book store. Something that is going into extinction.
I'm sorry you are going away. Missed the story time with my kids.
I'll miss all the helpful workers there. Sorry about loosing the jobs.
The rewards card will become a memory of good times we once had.
The website is no replacement for brick and mortar. Not even close.
Sorry to bid a fond farewell to a good and faithful friend. -

Thank goodness this BORDERS is not closing down......yet :(
I live in the east bay and this one is my closest one to my home. I really like the size of this borders even thought I am used to 2 floor types of building but eh it's ok, it's no big deal.
It's pretty big and I really hope it wont close, it's one of the survivors out of all the borders I knew.
My nearest border bookstore was in Alameda then Emeryville and the 2 good one in downtown died too :(
I guess I will go to this one now.
I'ts cool to t have the mall and good restaurants next to it.
I'm content with this place. -
Review from Carol Y.
Let begin by saying, I love Borders. I like sitting in the comfy chairs with a book and a warm cup of tea with the chill tunes playing overhead. I love that Borders offers so many coupons to make me feel good about getting a deal each time I make a purchase. I even think the staff at this location is decent. Why then, does this location only get three stars from me?
The customers can get loud. People on cell phones, kids running by, babies having meltdowns... Shut the eff up, I'm trying to enjoy my book, with my tea in this relaxing chair and I can't hear the chill music overhead.
Because this place gets so busy, it's often difficult to find an available chair, and sitting on the floor is not an option here because someone will eventually come around and tell you to get up off the floor. With an arm full of books, a purse, and a cup of tea, it can become a little difficult to select between potential purchases when you have to stand there in the aisle. They also hate outside food in their store, which would be okay if they had a better selection of warm, (non-sweet) food items to choose between. I've never been anywhere else (including other Borders locations) that despised non-Borders food with such a passion.Listed in: Find me here

Thanks for not closing down, since that would leave SFSU students to have to go to the library. I do like studying here, although it is a challenge competing with them and random tutors for seats.
It seems lately they've added some long tables (thumbs up), and removed those useless buy & load mp3 kiosks. All we students really want is a place to sit for free for hours, not buy mp3's... c'mon borders.
p.s. last time I was there, the power outlet situation was non-existent. Not sure about now, but come fully charged if you can. -

BORDERS BOOKS vs BARNES & NOBLE
(4 stars)
When did borders go broke? And it truely saddens me to hear that Borders files bankruptcy. Borders is my favorite corporate bookstore. However, i'm all about the independent bookstores. How is a girl who doesn't look like she reads books make the judgement call here? Let me tell you...
1. Bigger Space
2. Better selections
3. More books
4. Everytime i look for a book, B&N doesnt have it but Borders always does.
5. Better pricing
6. More family friendly than other bookstores (for example, for children)
The only dislikes I have for this location are all the students from SFSU camping out in the cafe area studying. That's cool, I did that back when i was going to UW and slummed myself at local bookstores and cafes. But i cannot grab a hot beverage and find a place to sit.
You want to know how much I love Borders. I come here monthly to buy my monthly bookclub book to read (don't judge; i got a nerdy side to me!!)I come here weekly to check out their food and fashion and health magazines. And if i wanted a part-time job, i'd love to work here. Stacking books being a bookwhore =)
Will I be back? They aren't dead yet!!!
JABA APPROVED. Until the next review.. -

7/20/11: Borders is liquidating their stores-so disappointed!! Called this store and they confirmed they will be closing in two months! :( Hard to believe this store/branch has been a part of my life for more than a decade. For all of its irritations, it was still the best to me. Now I've got to drive further to B & N which is not as good IMO.
It used to be quite good...before the other locations closed down. Certain sections have been cut and new editions are unavailable (e.g. travel). The Barnes & Noble in Daly City and San Bruno (Tanforan) have the books we want to buy now so we purchase from them instead now. Too bad for Borders they just don't get it.
One irritation of Borders is the lot of SFSU students who park themselves in the cafe as though it's an extension of the SFSU library. Another irritation is the other lot of non-students who think nothing of grabbing two handful of magazines and books, install themselves in the chairs that Borders stupidly provide then thumb through everything and best yet leave them right there not even bothering to return them where they got them. They certainly took their time to gather their reading material so why don't they have the courtesy to return them?! Then Borders expects others like myself who actually do want to buy these items to purchase them at full cost after they've been thumbed through, dog eared, etc.! Personally I disagree with any bookstore that provides chairs because I do not see the point. It encourages people to read but not buy. -

This is probably one of the bigger Borders store in SF. I came here expecting that the store to be close out but it isn't!
I looked around for books at the mark-off sections, though it mostly comprised of cookbooks, art, photography, and children books. There are a lot of SFSU students that come over here and after all, the store is nearby the school. -
Review from Tammy C.
Only reason is the books to have the 2 stars. Poor experience half way through the review.
Since Borders closed all its stores in downtown SF, it leaves all the bookworms starve of intellect.
Came here only because Borders had messed up my account for years and finally gave me $60 Borders bucks with an expiration in a couple weeks. I can't judge books by the cover, or other readers / critics' comments. It has to be somewhat random to be creative.
So I trekked out here at this foggy location. It looks like it has inherited items from the other 2 stores since it seems to be more stocked up.
This store is more like a library than a bookstore with tables and plastic chairs in an area. You see locals, families here and others doing homework at the coffee shop area.
It lacks the new book scent and more like a warehouse feel.
But today I have had the first poor experience at a Borders by the staff member. The cashier actually incorrectly double charged my DVD and then forgot to charge a book. I questioned the final total to be high but the cashier said it was correct without checking again. Of course you never saw the bill after you signed the bill.
I was outside the bookstore and just didn't trust it and then found out what happened.
Going back and talked to a different cashier as the one who rang up the bill was not there. This cashier was like just line up and it will be taken care, without apology. Okay, so it's not his fault.
Lining up it was the same guy who told me to line up was making the corrections. All he said was, "Oh it's just a price adjustment." I corrected him as someone made a mistake.
The fact that he did not acknowledge the error, albeit not his, was just pure poor customer service.
I surely will be shopping online from now on. -

This is one of my favorite late night places by default because they open late until 11pm (except for Sundays) and they're close to my home. Currently they have a lot of comfortable seats to just down with a book, hopefully they don't get damaged too quickly by people who don't care or unfortunately loves to damage public things, as had often happened before.
Also, for what it's worth, this is one of few places with a very good selection of new CD's for browsing. Of course it's nothing compared to the old Tower Records which unfortunately has been gone for years. At least it's bigger than other Borders in the City (with the possible exception of Powell St but I haven't visited that one in some time to say if that's still the case.) -

Yay! Books and they are all clean. I sorta think of Borders like a much nicer version of the library. Of course I'm not going to start breaking out all my supplies calculator math textbook etc and start a major study session here.. but
this is a fun browse if youre looking to buy new books or just get some ideas of what's out there.
This location has dungeons and dragons section. Do all Borders do that now? or just this one? Props because that's so unique

I like Borders over B&N anyday. I like that there are random coupons in the mail, nearly every week. Conveniently located on the outside of Stonestown Mall.
I HAAAAAAAAAATE when people think this is a library and get upset when you're making noise/talking/laughing. This is a BOOKSTORE people, get your study on somewhere else! -

It's unfortunate that I have to drive miles to get to Borders as all the other locations are disappearing.
I go because of my buddy that works in the kid's section, the free drink i get with my border's card, and the 40% coupons i get in my inbox. Its also a place for a quick iced soy latte for lunch. -

Borders is one of my favorite bookstores. Barnes and Noble wouldn't always have some of the items I am looking for. However, I turn around going into Borders finding exactly the item I am looking for.
5 stars for everything many of the merchandise in stock fulfilling customers' requirements and expectations.
5 stars for the cafe even though I haven't bought coffee from their cafe yet.
5 stars for the location being in Stonestown and close to San Francisco State University.
For any books, magazines, cd's, and dvd's I need, it is definitely Borders. -
Review from Meg T.
Man, I'm just all with the bad reviews lately.
But this is no different. Their romance section was atrocious. ATROCIOUS. I have never seen a bookshelf in worse order than mine at home, but they managed it.
First off they separated the larger sized books from the regular paperbacks. Which meant that you had to look in two places for the same writer, and that was just for something you KNEW was in romance. I was looking for a romance/ sci-fi/ fantasy. So I got to look in three, finally finding it in a fourth place on some random shelf at the front.
Add that to the fact that it looked like some lonely housewife had straight cleaned them out. They had huge empty sections on the shelves and everything was mixed up like a kid had been let loose on the lower books.
For the large books nothing was alphabetized and I left with one small book, frustrated with this Borders entire ordering and maintenance process.
I hate you Borders. Just so you know. -

*** AGE-OLD QUESTION: HOW MANY BORDERS EMPLOYEES DOES IT TAKE TO FIND WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR? ***
(Answer below)
Nance runs into her local Borders, anxious to get her grubby little hands on Planet Earth (the complete BBC series) on Blu-ray.
Why?
Because in her hands is a printed out coupon - 40% off ANY DVD box set!! Hells yeah, it pays to be a member!
She looks around in the "P" section in Blu-ray and couldn't find it.
Employee #1: Hi, can I help you with something?
Nance: Oh yes, do you have Planet Earth, on Blu-ray?
Employee #1: Oh no, we are completely sold out of those.
She was not convinced.
- The Nance never gives up. -
She hurries to one of their computers and checks for store availability. It says, "likely in store."
"BULLSH*T!" she almost yelled.
She runs back to the DVD section and continues searching.
Employee #2: Hi there, are you finding everything okay?
Nance: I have a question, I have the 40% off coupon... Does that apply towards Blu-ray?
Employee#2: Yes, just as long it's a box set... Is there are specific one you're looking for?
Nance: Yes, PLANET EARTH!
Employee #2: Oh I'm sorry, we're sold out of those this morning... But let me show you where our other box sets are. These DVD's are sorted by genre; here's our science/nature section...
Boy, was she blind, she had no idea they had a GLASS CASE full of DVD box sets!
- The Nance never gives up!! -
She continues searching in this newfound section, now even harder than before!
*gasp!*
Her heart almost stopped. She hears angels singing. There it is, with a glowing light...
PLANET EARTH ON BLU-RAY!!!
"YOU LYING F**KING BASTARDS!" she thought to herself!!
Nance (shouting): EXCUSE ME!!!!
Employee #3 (assisting a customer): Oh can you hold on for a minute?
Nance: Oh, sorry.
Employee #3: Hey ______, can you help her out please?
Employee #4: Who?
Nance: ME.
Employee #4 (unlocking glass case): Oh, it looks like you got the last Planet Earth...
Nance: Yeah, I asked two people earlier and they said you guys were sold out.
Employee #4: Oh, I guess they didn't check.
Nance (to herself): No sh*t, they didn't... especially that douche (aka employee #2) who walked me over to this section!!
Borders, you almost broke my heart but I never gave up. I got what I wanted... ALL BY MYSELF. Thanks for your lack of help.
*** ANSWER: NONE, YOU WILL HAVE TO FIND IT ON YOUR OWN.*** -
Review from Scott S.
My love affair with this Borders store is over. Why you may ask?
1) With the opening of Trader Joes next door, parking which used to be easy is now over. It took ten minutes of circling around to find a spot the other day.
2) Aside from the cashiers, trying to get a staffer to open the locked cases or help you find something, is a challenge too. It's almost like they are avoiding eye contact. If they don't see you, they can't help you.
3) I don't know about the women's restroom, but one word describes the men's room - filthy! True, vandalism has taken it's toll, but if this is a flagship store (one would assume from the size of it), then make an effort to have clean and well stocked restrooms.
I'm now looking for a better book buying experience somewhere else. Suggestions welcomed. -

I admit I've never enjoyed reading. I love coming to Borders just for their cookbook section and magazine section. I like how they don't kick you out for staying there the whole day sitting on the floor and just checking out cookbook after cookbook or magazine after magazine.. They even have a section for sex books! How cool is that?
I hate how there are so many people in here.. -

Although my review is intended for the Seattle's Best Coffee at the back of the store, I suppose I could rate the store as a whole while I'm at it.
The coffee here, bluntly put, is overpriced and poorly made. Okay, maybe not coffee coffee. I'm more of a latte person, but regardless, I find smaller, local coffee shops get it more spot on than here. I've ordered from them a couple of times, hoping the previous was just some newbie making it, but that's not the case. I haven't tried anything else though in terms of drinks or food.
Seating is almost impossible, so this is not the place if you want to sit down and casually chat with your friends over coffee. It can also get kinda loud, in comparison to the rest of the bookstore.
Border's itself... Service is okay, nothing overly stellar. They did add large tables in the middle of the store for those who can't get a seat at the coffee shop, but need a table (instead of just a lounge chair). The chairs are uncomfortable and plastic, which may not be ideal if you're a student looking to study here for a few hours. I also find their wifi to barely ever work, even though the signal strength is decent enough.
I normally come here to flip through/buy magazines, and shift through their sale items, all the while getting out of the cold (if it is cold) if the wait for the 29 bus is more than 10 minutes. -

Overall it was nice to have this Borders store around for the years that I used it.
I always found what I needed to just kick back with the latest books and magazines while sipping a drink.
The service could suck at times but the location and ambiance was appreciated.
I guess I'd be a bitter employee too if I knew my days were numbered working for a bookstore chain that's going bankrupt.
I'm sad to see it go just like the other two Borders stores around Union Square. :-(
It's the damn recession and tablets that's to blame. I bought a fair number of books so I felt I did my part to support this store and the other two stores.
It's wishful thinking that Barnes & Noble or another chain will step in.
At least the new SFSU library looks like an interesting replacement if it actually opens in 2012. -

Another "templatized" Borders Bookstore, a franchise located in the Stonestown Mall.
Though I personally do not relish time spent gallivanting in malls, as I used to when I was in high school many moons ago, I see myself strolling through Stonestown Mall whenever my mother needs my "driving.Ms.Daisy" services, or when my sister is in town.
I have browsed through borders, but I would say the bookstore is curated in a mainstream way, as it should, if it wants to sell. The children's books collection is quite extensive. During my sister's last visit we spent an hour or so looking for appropriate children's books for my little niece. We were glad to browse through quite a collection of high quality educational children's books.
Last week, I found myself in the hood again. I stalked Borders in search for a comprehensive Stamp Collection Guide book for my Dad's birthday present. In his gracefully aging years, he has decided to claim stake on my middle school stamp collection book, and has been asking me to search the internet for valuable stamp listing. Yeah, right, like my book has any hidden valuable stamp! Nevertheless, I knew that such a book would entertain him and bring him a sparkle in his eyes.
The helpful, yet clueless staff escorted me to the hobbies section.
To my dismay, they only carried a SINGLE book, that was not quite impressive. The staff suggested I go to the nearest post office, "maybe, they sell Stamp Collection books there."
I politely thanked them for the effort, and briskly walked towards my car. -

One of the largest Borders in San Francisco that I've been to.
I only purchase things here with a coupon. I am serious. They email me at least once a week with a coupon. If I don't have a coupon, I wait.
Be a Borders Rewards member, it's FREE! Once you have purchased $500 (yeah, that's a lot), they'll send you $5 Borders Buck.
You can return books with your receipt. (Be nice, I don't want to buy your already read book)
*****Borders****** - PLEASE ask your St. Ann's kids to quiet down. EVERY-SINGLE-TIME-A-PERSON-ENTERED/EXITED-THE-STOR E-THEY-SCREAMED "Free Gift Wrap!" Then they'll shove their hand made posters towards my face on my way out as well. It is rather UNCOMFORTABLE. I AM LEAVING WITH A CUP OF COFFEE..... -

One of my homes away from home.
So many afternoons and nights spent here. All of the homework, all of the studying, all of the research. I think there's an invisible stress bubble around Border's. Most of the time I get a table pretty easily, but there's nights, especially around midterms & finals, when its so packed I just leave. People usually lurk around the tables waiting for someone to leave. On any given day I can spend anywhere from 1-4hrs here at a time. Thank God for Seattle's Best coffee =P I'm a devoted fan of hazelnut latte's (non-fat, no whip, extra foam!) -

http://Borders.com has a neat feature where you can check if your local store has particular titles, then reserve them for pickup later that day. I tried this the morning before Christmas, probably the worst time to test it with a long last-minute shopping list. And indeed, it didn't work. I never got an email confirming that they got the request, and when I went to the store, the information desk guy explained that they hadn't had time to provide the online reservation service that day.
But he made up for it by asking, "What's on your list? I'll find the books for you." He stopped what he was doing and walked around the store with us, tracking down each item we needed. He had a good memory for exactly where books would be on the shelves, and he seemed to know about several of the titles, even when they weren't exactly bestsellers. For example, for a memoir about a parrot called "Alex and Me," he recognized the title immediately and said, "Yes I remember that got a good review in the New York Times," then walked straight to its location on the shelves. Good service. -

I love Borders as a bookstore and this location is really convenient (parking is a breeze), especially since it's close to SFSU. It's a good place to study as well.
However, it has three major flaws.
1) Wifi is way too pricey.
2) Can't say anything about the men's bathroom, though I doubt it's any better, but the women's bathroom is HORRIBLE! It's like one of those rest stop bathrooms when you're on the road, if not worse. I especially dislike their bathroom because it smells really really bad. I mean, really! I feel disgusted going in there to wash my hands let alone to actually "use" the bathroom. Honestly, I would much rather walk to the Nordstroms bathroom, which is nearby.
3) And worst of all....their cafe only offers one type of green tea! One TYPE?! Oh Lord! ok ok, I'll play nice and I won't deduct any stars because this one is just my little preference, but admit it, I totally have a point!.... =) -

3 stars for great parking, almost like a library setting (read books without buying them while having a cup of coffee) and having not-pressuring staff.
2 big ass stars less for having annoying college kids coming in and unbelievable smelly nasty bathroom.
I really appreciate this place and these negatives won't stop me from going there. Even the annoying college kids sounding really really shallow and stupid, I'll let that go.
But daaaaaamn, what the fuck is wrong with your bathroom? Do you only clean it once a week? Do you have so many females peeing on the floor like how guys miss the target? AND your fuckin bathroom is right next to the coffee shop. That's just plain unsanitary and nasty man.
Please do something about it, it is super fuckin sad. -

The only thing i care about in this place are the Comics. I come here to catch up on all the Y the Last Man and Fables trades on a lazy afternoon on my day off. And no I'm not one of those dudes laying across the floor with greasy McDonald's from next door scattered around me like those kids stuffed in the Manga section. Damn, those kids get yelled at every 15 minutes by the "older" Border's Employees. anyway, i think they have actual books and Cd's and stuff, who knows. COMICS.
OH! i also like the root beer they have at the cafe.Listed in: Comics! OMG!

I like to go to this Borders to study. The drinks are good, especially the Raspberry Mocha Kiss. It's a hit or miss, depending on the drink preparer though. Lighting is decent if you sit near the side tables. Parking is ample since this location is at the Stonestown Mall. It's open pretty late. 11pm on most nights. 9pm on Sundays.
It gets pretty packed though, and there are some interesting people who don't realize that you don't really want to be talked to... And on weekends, some crazies as well. Great for people-watching, but if you want to get your study on, bring music. I always forget and am often subject to much verbal diarrhea.
Star #1 - Keeps me from being distracted by things at home.
Star #2 - Raspberry Mocha Kiss when it's made correctly.
Star #3 - The joy that overcomes me when I find a table!
Some of the food there smells ridiculously wonderful late at night too...
On a side note: It is a bit upsetting to me when people take the books for reading in the coffee shop, and then they crinkle up all the pages, or they start highlighting and writing in the book with no intention of buying. Let me rephrase. It pisses me off. -

i love borders! i think this is the best bookstore because they ALWAYS have great deals going on! First of all, it's FREE to be a member. I know other places charge you about $10-$20 a month which means you have to be an avid book reader to make your membership worth it. Borders always send me countless coupons in the mail ranging from 25%-40% off! I'm a girl who LOVES bargains. =) Whenever i go there, they usually always have the book i need and just to make sure its there i can check online or call them. If the location does have it, they can reserve it for me so i wont have to go around looking for it. They also have great customer service and people that are always willing to help me find something.
The only reason why this place gets four stars is because there's too many students loitering around this location and sometimes it's a tad messy. no me gusta!
