I miss this place. It was a great spot to kill time, drink a cup of coffee, and read a few books. They had a great, meaty art section, and they carried my favorite graphic novel series Berserk. Tons of magazines and even art supplies. And chairs. There was tons of seating.

All gone now, though. Oh well.

It's quite sad that I've only been going to this location since moving into the area six months ago and now finding out that this conveniently located Borders is one of the many going out of business in the bay area. First they mess with my favorite SF shopping center and Union square locations and now they gotta take this one too??...What gives Borders?!

Anyway, this was a nice and quiet location, better customer service than at other locations, conveniently located to those of us who lived within walking distance of it and going to be TERRIBLY missed! Unfortunately, one star had to be taken off for that. :(

Shame. On. You. Borders Corporate Mismanaged Idiots.

I quite like this Border's.  It's a large, airy space.  Never over-crowded with a good selection.  Another plus is ample free parking and close proximity to public transit and a good court with great variety.

Sadly, this place is going out of business soon, so hurry up and get your butt in here and get some deals.  Things are now 40-60% off.  Hurry up and get a good deal before they go bankrupt!

This is a really comfy book store, although they didn't have many books in the Health & Nutrition area, it's still really nice inside & I enjoyed my visit here!

They have cool stuff in the gift shop area too, I'm a total knick-nack lover...so of course I was totally enchanted by all the cool little things to look at, like the mini books, toys, bookmarks, all kinds of cool calendars & 365 day calendars, stationery stuff & writing supplies!

They also have a lot of cool stuff on clearance too! The deals are GREAT! They have all kinds of books & little craft kits & stuff for CHEAP!

It's really cool that this place is near a really big food court too, with plenty of restrooms & food choices!

    Four stars for:

    - being the ONLY Borders within a 40-mile radius of San Francisco to carry the ONE book that we wanted to buy right away and couldn't wait the few days for Amazon to ship. Yes, we dared to venture to the East Bay. Thank you for understanding our urgency. The book is now in our hands, and boy do the pages smell FANTASTIC!

    - proximity to the Public Market. OH WAIT, it's INSIDE. Mmm, food...

    - a deliciously-made Raspberry Mocha Kiss [*mwah*] in a cafe with seating. It wasn't the cleanest, but nothing a little napkin-wiping wouldn't take care of.

    - overhearing a conversation among Borders employees re: Steak and BJ day! It's coming up [AhHAHAHAHAH], kids. March 14th!

    - running into Maya and Jamie S!

Minus a star for being a typical Borders - a bit messy and what? Where's my favorite magazine [http://www.colorsmagaz...?! Not so typical as the layout's a little trippy.

You know why I love this Borders?  Because I can walk around with my hand up a rodent's A$$ and no one cares.  Said rodent also amused my friend while she perused the gay Japanese porn section.

I miss Rat.  They call it a "Mouse Puppet," but I call it Rat Which Could Amuse Me For Hours.

Since Gracie B. posted the new book club selection (Bitter is the New Black, by Jen Lancaster) I figured that I would actually buy the book instead of going to the library.  In general, I appreciate the whole library concept, but damn!  They never have the books I want.  And sometimes, you want what you want when you want it.

I made my way over to Borders after my regular Sunday breakfast outing at Rudy's.  And I actually found books that I wanted!  What a concept.  Here's where things get a little dicey:

Me: Do you have any bookmarks that have snarky and/or condescending messages on them?
    Borders Clerk:  I'm sorry?
Me: Yes, all of your bookmarks have these lame uplifting messages like "Shoot for the moon.  If you miss, you will still land amongst the stars".  And I am not an uplifting message kind of girl.....so, where are the bitchy bookmarks?
BC:  I'm sorry, ma'am.  We only have one section for bookmarks and that's it.
Me: OK, fuck it.  I will just use my receipt to mark my place.  I'd rather do that than use some douchey marker that says "Serenity" or "Harmony".

At this point, two of the three clerks have scattered like roaches when the kitchen light comes on.  I'll bet that the uplifting message bookmarks are meant for these losers who probably have cartoon cats on their book bags.  No matter.  The third clerk laughed and said that, yes, bitchy bookmarks may have a market of more than just one person.

So, listen up Borders!  Not all of us women are cheery and have the hunky fireman calendar up on our wall.  Some of us are bitter and snarky and we intend to stay that way.  And while you are at it, drop the fireman calendars altogether.  They don't show anything that could really get me going.  Maybe you could start carrying porn?  That may be going too far, but think about it.

Yeah. I know it is an  un PC chain store but I have had mostly positive experiences here.  We went there a few days before Christmas and the clerk in the kid's department was supremely helpful.  I was looking for Sabuda's Peter Pan (a fantastic pop-up book).  He looked it up on the computer and then checked the shelves.  It wasn't where it was suppose to be.  He then looked  in a couple of other areas and "Eureka" he found it.

I also had found a raccoon hand puppet (a To Rinky from Rinky gift) that didn't have a price on it. He looked it up on the computer and then wrote
the info down for me to give to the sales clerk.

I had gotten an email with a 25 % discount coupon.  I mistakenly only printed out the page without the coupon.  No problem...the sweet sales clerk asked her coworker for the coupon code!

They even have places to sit that aren't in the cafe!  Yay!

I really want to hate Borders because I hate big chain stores. I am one of those old-school people who cried when Cody's Books closed down on Telegraph because it was an amazing store filled with many memories of my parents and my long-lost innocent youth...including meeting President Carter and being excoriated by "hat lady." Anyone remember "hat lady?" She was obsessed with Brad Pitt, wore blue lipstick, and sold crocheted hats on Telegraph in the mid-late 90's. No? Tangent much... yeah yeah....

Anyhow, no more Cody's for me. =( However, if given the choice between Barne's and Noble and Borders for convenience, I'd pick Borders. Easy parking that's free. Large study area. Coffee that is not Starbucks. Free rewards card thing. Right next to the 57 bus stop. Right next to Peet's if you don't want their coffee. Nobody's given me the stink eye for taking the large circular table for my all of one self and many books. I only have two complaints: The bathrooms are dirty*, usually lack toilet seat covers, and have stall doors that don't lock. The layout of the store is a bit confusing...I got lost and couldn't find my way out when I was drunk. What? You don't get drunk and buy books? What's wrong with you?

    *Pee at Barne's and Noble...

This Borders makes me get all warm and tingly in the cockles of my heart.  Oh wait!!!  I have no heart! Bwahahahahah!!!!

Actually...this Borders fulfills every erratic whim and urge that I've been having lately.  I'm kinda on an emo roller coaster...beware folks.  I'm as unstable as the United States economy.  To chill myself out I did the following "Feel Good" things the other day at Borders.

    - Listened to Bat-Shit Britney's new single on the demo display.
(Made me feel better about myself...home-girl is cray cray!)

    - Skimming the American Heart Association's Cookbook
(Getting healthy recipe ideas to lose the tummy pudge)

    - Ogling the covers of GQ, Details and Men's Health
(Hey..a girl can dream, can't she?)

    - Drinking a double, non-fat wet cappuccino
(Yes...I'm one of THOSE particular coffee snobs)

    - Finally buying a book with my Borders Discount Card...10% off!!
(Nothing is better than reading a good book in the bath tub with a glass of wine)

It smelled fiercely like cat urine in here. Like when a cat is irritated and purposefully pisses outside the litter box.

My eyes were watering, it made me sad to peruse magazines I had no intention of buying while dealing with this assault on my face. I swear there must have been some 'cats with bladder issues' convention up in this.

It was wrong, just wrong, and I cried. What could possibly be in a Borders that would make this smell happen? If you know, tell me please, I'm confused.

Ever since I was little, the bibliophile in me has loved bookstores.  My perfect gift has always been a gift certificate so I can comb the shelfs for hours reading a handful of books, before finding one worthy of purchasing.

But this Borders frustrates me ...

I want to love it.  They are cozier and friendlier that Barnes and Noble.  They have a nice coffee shop and a variety of other things besides books.  And I have a tendency to have gift cards given to me for this store.

But the setup confuses me.  Some things are really spread out and others smushed together.  And there isn't a lot of seating.  I have left somewhat disappointed the last couple times I have been here.  I have not been able to find that perfect book.

    Borders is Borders.

But this place has the advantage of being in the Emeryville MarketPlace and you have a myriad of choices to choose from when you get hungry, or sick of coffee from Seattle's Best Coffee inside Borders.

I always get their email discounts and promotions, so when I go, I just show the coupon via my mobile phone and I get from 33% up to 50% off drinks/food/purchases.  Sometimes even free things!

    They have free Wi-Fi.

Not as large a Borders location as in Alameda, but it's hard to compete since just down the street at Bay Street Mall is a large Barnes & Nobles location that is a lot bigger.

This Borders is probably more mellow than the others I've been to...

Dear pieholes that use the Borders cafe as a public library: at least buy a coffee or something.  We stopped in for some drinks after having lunch at the public market and managed to find a seat to share between two people.  Honestly 50% of the people sitting there didn't even have a drink.  The chick at the table next to me got all pissy when a Borders employee took the magazines she hadnt paid for and hadn't gotten around to reading yet. No drink.  A dude had his computer plugged in and running the entire time we were there, came back with the remainder of his lunch in a doggy box.  No drink.  One older dude with no drink was typing madly away on a laptop on a manifesto or something.  He looked like he lived there.  He got super upset when as he was packing up, two ladies (No drinks) asked him if he was leaving.

You have a day's worth of free parking and gigawatts of free power to your laptops.  For crap's sake spring for a small house coffee or something.

I know it's a BIG CHAIN STORE and I'd rather support local small bookstore owners (like Moe's, Diesel, or Pegasus) but after a few drinks across the way at Elephant Bar all that went out the window.

I just had to satisfy my craving for a new PAUL COELHO book.  If you've read his stuff then you'll understand.  Just pick up a copy of The Alchemist and you'll consider not giving me shit for my corporate purchase.

In Borders I found the most helpful customer service from a snappy gal that I really appreciated.  She even rode the escalator with me to show me where I could feed my addiction.

Thank you, Borders Human Resources for hiring such a winner!!!!

Huuuuuge parking lot. Huge selection of books. Nice place to hang out after grubbin at the Marketplace. The cafe area however is not too cute.

Not sure where all these students are coming from but they love to hog up all the tables & seats. Taking a look at their text books they might be nursing students. Sometimes they look real tore up...like they haven't slept in two weeks and haven't showered in two days. Reminds me of my UCD all nighter days *sigh* god bless them.

The ladies restroom is weirdly stuffy and often smelly.

First of all, it is HUMONGOUS. Secondly, you will need help finding ANYTHING...except guitar hero which they have everywhere in the middle of the store.

Good luck trying to find a seat in the cafe. There are people who literally sit there ALL DAY...guess they don't have a 'you must buy a drink policy' like B&N...but it does really suck if you bought a drink and want a seat to enjoy it (but too bad because someone else who bought a drink 5 hours ago is still sitting there). The drinks are really good at Seattle's Best Coffee, my favorite was the Blackberry Latte (not sure if it is still there).

    Lastly, the bathrooms are DISGUSTING...

The perfect day: Walk across the street for some Peet's, browse Borders, then finish with a nice afternoon meal at the Public Market.

I didn't like this Borders for the first few months. I thought the layout was weird, but now I prefer it to ever-square Barnes. The elongated L shape gives the impression of size.

There's a lot to see here besides the standard fare. There is a stationary section that sells boxes, papyrus cards, and gift wrap (uh.. so I've heard...). They also sell iPod and other audio accessories.

The service is excellent. Now that they have the Reward's Club, I'll be back to buy some more books I'll never read. I haven't been this excited in Borders since I was a kid in Hawaii (nerd).

I really dislike this Borders. A lot. It SMELLS in there. It stinks like homeless people and old Chinese food.

The layout of the store makes very little sense and every time I've gone in every section I look at is trashed. The graphic novels section is shameful.

The staff creeps me out. They're all bug-eyed and greasy. I kept wanting to shoo people away with a broom and growl at them. As I perused the comic books, a male employee stood nearby me, not saying anything to me - you know, not asking if I need help as is customary - but repeatedly grinning at me like a creep. I did not appreciate it and walked away.

If you need to order a book be prepared to wait a week (3 days at B&N or Amazon).

And their oh-so-amazing FREE Borders card is only free because it doesn't actually save you anything... Dumb.

    Ehh.

This Borders makes me feel sad. It's really big & usually pretty vacant, a reminder that the Borders hay day is clearly over. I always feel guilty when I think about buying something cause I want to support the multitude of mom & pop indie book stores ALL OVER the east bay but sadly, they're not a 5 minute walk from my work...
And perusing Borders extensive magazine section really helps make the work day go by quicker. And they have a decent random section (cards, weird toys like a box of plastic noses?, Pacifica candles, etc.).

Still, these items can be found elsewhere... and this place is still depressing.

I really like this Borders. It is not nearly as crowded as the one in Union Square in SF and it's layout is much better.
I find books & music here that I will not find in Barnes & Noble in El Cerrito (viz. Three Penny Opera soundtrack, hardbacks of books by Meyer). And, they lack of dents and smooshes they have on their hardbacks is a big plus.
I have never asked for help, so I don't know what the staff is like on the floor, but the staff at the cash wrap is really friendly. They know exactly when to chat you up about a purchase and exactly when to keep quiet ("So You Wanna Kill Yourself...", "Steamy Steamy 4").
This bookstore is attached to the Emery Bay Public Market, so there is a lot of seating just past the doors for you to read your new purchase. The other entrance is to the outside, back/side parking lot. There is a coffee shop inside with plenty of seating.

    SIGN OF THE TIMES
I used to enjoy browsing the books, movies and music here (and buying some!)  but this place seems to have gone down hill.

    WHAT DO THEY GOT GOING?
Cards, candy, wrapping paper and unmemorable " bits of this and that" competing with space for books and media. Seems like they are trying to sell just about anything but it's diluting the overall value of coming here. The selection of books, etc. has gotten very limited- very mainstream- nothing much that's below the masses intellectual radar. The music is extremely limited- why bother at their high prices? It seems to have turned into a bad Big Box experience with a lost focus.

    WHY?
The rest of us are buying online? or is it the death of bookstores?....People aren't reading anymore? The Music industry has gone to downloads. Probably all of this. If brick and mortar stores can't offer a personal valuable experience the only thing they'll offer is occasional convenience.

I am losing two long time clients of mine. They have been with me for over 10 years, and I've grown very close to them. One is moving to the East Coast, the other to SoCal. I wanted to give them some sort of parting gift, so I thought maybe a nice coffee table book with pictures of the bay area and california would be nice.
So off to Borders I went. I got in there and tried to find it on my own, but couldn't. I asked for help, and not only did someone help me, they physically took me over to the section and showed me what they had available. Everyone was very helpful, and I even got the books gift wrapped for free. Thanks Borders!

I have a thing for this Borders. Their stores in general just have a more relaxed, comfortable feel than B&N, but this one is perhaps the best example.

This was the default place to go when there was a long wait for a movie at Emery UA.  This is probably one of the biggest borders I've ever seen.  It's huge and it's one-story.  The place is nicely laid out, with music and videos on one side and books on the other.  The adjacent cafe (Seattle's Best) is at the very end near the outside entrance.  This is ideal because the traffic there is much less distracting to bookstore customers.  There are three main entrances, one at the end by the cafe, one in the middle near the cashiers, and one over by the music/videos that leads into Emery Bay Market.

The layout is very wide open but there are lots of nooks and crannies to make this place not feel like a warehouse.  There isn't a lot of seating but the aisles are very big so people can stand around without clogging up walkways.  I never noticed the lighting in there, but that is saying a lot because most bookstores have lights that are TOO bright.

There aren't a lot of people walking around to help, but this also means that there aren't people bugging you incessantly.  This place is never empty nor is it ever crowded.  it just feels comfortable in there.

If you don't mind not sitting, then this is a really nice place, and i don't mind not sitting down.

I was telling someone today how I used to spend hours here once upon a time...I was having problems with an old roommate and would escape to Borders just so that I wouldn't be in the house.  So, I would come here and look through the stacks and search for overpriced cd's to buy.  It was my saving grace of sorts.

It is a huge store, and I am pretty sure they have the book that you are looking for.  If not, I am sure they can obtain it for you somehow.   They also sell dvd's, cd's, cards, all sorts of gifts, wrapping paper, and Jesus.  Just Kidding, they don't have Jesus.  I was seeing if you were paying attention.

Today, as I was thumbing through various poetry books, and being the graceful person that I am, I knocked over my latte.  Don't worry, no books were harmed, just the carpet.  And like a stealthy ninja, I quickly left the scene.  So, this is my apology to Borders, I am sorry for being a klutz and spilling my delicious latte on your carpet.  But, hey, that's what steam cleaners are for, right?

I just gotta say, wow.  I finished my letter to you, then stopped by before leaving for Seattle, just to pass the time.  I was shocked -- you didn't tel me you were moving your comic book and manga collections from that out-of-the-way inner aisle out to a big, spacious area!  You even put chairs out so we can sit and read.  That's top quality.  I've never seen a big bookstore give graphic novels and mange serious respect, and by doing that, you just earned mine, and the fifth star I said in my letter that I hadn't planned to give.

    Good job!

    Alex

A letter to my local Borders:

    Dear Borders,

It's been three years, hasn't it?  Three years since I first found you, resting there by the Public Market?  Yeah, guess it has.  They've been fine, pretty uneventful, years together.  You have a nice, spacious interior, a convenient location with free parking, and you've been a nice place to pass an hour with comic books when I get out of work early and a nice place to do web development at lunch (though it would be nice if your cafe's wifi extended through the store, for when the cafe fills up).

I would've said a nice place to read the news and develop in the morning, but then you went and changed your opening hour from 8 to 9.  I can't really blame you, though; if that hour's not profitable, it's just not profitable.  Still, having to walk further to the Starbucks is a bit annoying.  But that's more than made up by one of your cafe workers, who awesomely kept letting me order carmel apple spices even after they left the menu for the summer.  (Though your cafe workers overall are a bit uneven at making hot chocolates.)

Overall, you've done a good job -- nothing to merit that fifth star, but a nice, solid four, as befits a chain bookstore.

See you next week at lunchtime!

    Alex

    Pretty big single story bookstore.

A few chairs for sitting and browsing books.

Hard to find someone to help you find books, you're on your own.

Dimly lite, dark & depressing looking interior doesn't make for good lighting or reading.

Large cafe area a plus but it very difficult to find somewhere to sit in here. I think the dimly lite book store area has pushed folk over in to the cafe area where they actually have a lot more light by the large open window area.

A lot of people using laptops in the cafe area that seem to spend a lot of time here with no food, no drink, no nothing. Come on folks this is not a public library.

Womens bathroom is located way in the corner of the store behind the cafe & hard to find. Bathroom is usually icky & gross. Come on janitor step it up and do your job.

Large tacky community bulletin board loaded to the left as you approach the restroom area. The bulletin board has all kinds of posted info stuff ranging anyway from ads to legend of Zelda.

The bulletin board is a flash back to SF, Berkley & Oakland telephone pole postings.

Hob nobbing in Emeryville shouldn't be like trippin in SF.

    WTF happened to this place?

I used to come here and hide out from the world a few years back.
I'd grab a coffee, and plant my ass in the area where all the art books were and maybe a couple hours later, grab a bite in the food court and then go haunt the sci-fi/fantasy area.
Now they don't have anything. Like they sell their stuff and don't get anything new. Is this a result of the economic-crisis?
The Art section is moved from it's original location, and very very sparse.
The Sci-fi area is weak, too.
    Dang.
    Hard times people. Hard times.

Borders, what can I say about Borders. This is a good place to hang out while you wait for your movie to start at AMC. The Starbucks inside validates parking (sometimes without a purchase). This Borders is massive with two floors of learning goodness.

We also go to peruse the magazine section. There are many good magazines that are covered. However, there is one book that I would like to spread some hate about. The Kevin Trudeau book is big pile of poop. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people that believe his mumbo jumbo.

Ok, go hang out and have fun.

The bookstore's fine, I'm griping about the cafe. The coffee's lousy, the wi-fi doesn't work, and the bathroom? Sheesh what a fright!

Our no-fail, cheap, Date Night standby:

Dinner at the adjacent food court (where they have about 25 freakin vendors...literally), then browsing at Borders.

    Love it.

I never leave here empty handed, but i can not for the life of me understand how they figure out what to order.  I always find a good selection of mysteries, and fiction by African American authors.

But I recently went in to get a gift for a kid under ten.....All the books had tie ins to some corporate character, either Dora, or Disney, or something.  I just wanted a good bed time story book......

so, i bought myself a trashy novel and got some food from the food court to fortify myself for the hours of shopping that it took before i found an appropriate kiddie book.

I pretty much hand out stars like candy when it comes to books and music.  If you're a Borders or Barnes & Noble, you pretty much get 4 stars for simply being there, unless you got some serious psycho PMS bitch giving me attitude, that is...  Thankfully, that's really only happened once.

This particular Borders, however, gets 5 stars because it's very very big and they have a very good selection of books.   Their music and DVD selection is only average, but damn if they ain't got a serious plethora of books of all kinds:  business, tech, fiction, mystery, travelogues, the list goes on...

I've been known to get lost in here for upwards of three or four hours and I kicked and screamed all the way as they dragged my ass out of there.
