I came here during the OC Fairground food truck event, which I love! So many good trucks, great space, and beer. weee! :)
The Peruvian ceviche is really good, great spice and flavor. I love the cone idea and it is easy to eat.The potato raja tacos yummy too.
I also enjoyed that the prices on this truck are not super expensive and the dishes are smaller in size. I want to try ALOT of things when I am at a food truck event. After all, this is suppose to be street food. Easy and portable. I feel a lot of food trucks are loosing sight of that idea. Having items $10-12 dollars and not being able to eat without a knife and fork and a butt load of napkins, what's that point? I might as well go to a sit down restaurant.
Loved it, I hope they come around to OC more.Listed in: Yum Yum for My Tum Tum!, Gourmet Food Trucks

Border Grill catered a small event at my work, and I was NOT impressed. The chicken tacos were covered in some mayonnaise type sauce which wasn't very appealing. gourmet food truck? i think not. the guacamole was just off. something about it, perhaps too much onion or something, was just wrong. the ceviche was okay, but i've definitely had better. the best part of the meal was the churro tots, but even those were on the burnt side.
one last note: ceviche in a cone? mexican food should be left to the people who make it best: Mexicans. -
Review from Lesley C.
It makes total sense. If anyone was going to do a gourmet food truck with high end versions of street tacos, it should be the Two Hot Tamales who do that on a regular basis at their restaurant.
On my first visit, I started with a two taco combination. The Yucatan Chicken was very pleasant to eat because the chicken was topped with a generous handful of crisp vegetables. The julienned radishes were cool and crunchy and the pickled onions added a vinegary tang and sweetness. The tortilla was warmed through so it definitely felt freshly made. The other taco was less memorable with grilled pork and a crema sauce. I missed the texture that the chicken taco had. The taco combination came with cumin fries, which are regular french fries dusted with a dash of cumin. It tasted exactly like what you think cumin fries would taste like, which is pretty unmemorable.
The next visit, I tried the ceviche cone. I was concerned about the $5 price tag but it turned out to be my favorite Border Grill Truck offering thus far. The idea of a ceviche tostada is easily translatable to a crispy fried cone filled with ceviche. The cone itself was nicely fried and I loved breaking off chunks of it to eat with the fish. I was pleasantly surprised at how much fish they managed to wedge into that cone and each bite was firm, sweet, and well-marinated in lime, ginger, & ajillo chili. I loved Border Grill's pickled onions so I was pleased to see the cone topped with a good amount of it.
Unfortunately, the Yucatan pork burrito was underwhelming. The burrito was quite small and was also disproportionately filled with black beans, pico de gallo, and rice. The tortilla was toasty, which I appreciated but the flavors were too ho hum and the portions small for this to be something I'd go out of my way and pay premium for.Listed in: Food Trucks

They sell you a taco for $3 that is exactly 3 bites in size. And it's only a decent taco. No better than what you would get at Baja Fresh. Further, the workers on the truck are lazy. Ask for a bag and they give you foil and tell you to work it out yourself. Yet, they are begging for tips by putting "Tips Make You Sexy" on their tip cup. Not a good look Borders Grill Truck.
I'll skip them the next time they come to the building where I work. -

I tried a potato burrito here when the truck parked at the OC Fairgrounds. It was filling, but not great. There was a lot of rice in it, and not many potatoes. I didn't actually find a visible bit of potato until I was almost finished with my burrito. Then when I did find a piece of potato, it was not quite completely cooked. The filling was also a little dry, and the very first thing I got when I bit into it was a piece of what appeared to be fresh thyme--woody stalk and all. Ugh! Fresh herbs are great, but please don't throw in the tough stem. However, the pickled onions they put in the burrito were really good.

The man had a citrus chicken burrito and it was sooooooo good.
Hot (temp-wise), a little spicy, filled with chicken, veggies and rice...it was a perfect meal.
I wanted to try the carne asada quesadilla but the Bacon Mania truck was calling my name---next time.Listed in: Food Trucks of Amazingness

This truck came to our work and said they were going to be here for a couple hours. Everyone that had the truck's food was telling me their burritos were good so I went to order one.
Apparently this food truck doesn't have enough food.... no burritos. That was the only thing on their menu that looked like it was a decent value. $3 for a taco from a truck, and $8 for a small Quesadilla is a little out of hand. This is with no sides. I wouldn't be happy about this even if I was served at a restaurant.
I would be down to try their burrito if they ever come back, I just think it is unprofessional to show up places unprepared. I don't get how they can show up to a place to serve lunch for over 150 people and not bring enough to make 30-40 burritos.
If I show up to a meeting and don't have my shit together, I look like an asshole. I don't think it's unfair to hold that standard to other professionals.
This is a disappointment rating. -

I had just savored a Frankenstand hot dog (http://www.yelp.com/bi...); THAT man knows how to do things right.
That said, DON'T waste your time or your money on this lackluster truck next time. I got a potato taco and when it was handed to me, I was ready to demand my money back right fucking there. It was SMALLER than a street taco. Cool, marinated onions on top, like 4 tiny minced pieces of it. I tend to savor my food and plan out my bites to make it last - You get the idea. This bullshit was gone in TWO bites. No exaggeration.
Fuck a bunch of Border Grill, I could have had another glorious Frankenstand hot dog with ALL of the fixins for that $3.
Don't bother! That goes for the dudes in the truck giving me the eyes all night too. -

The GF and I went to the Santa Anita racetrack the past weekend for the food truck festival. As we made it to the other side of the racetracks, we see over 40+ trucks brewing for business. After trying Ludo's fried chicken, we needed something clean and light to wash down the heaviness. We saw the Border Grill Truck and knowing that Mary Sue and Susan Fenniger started this truck, we knew it was the right truck to choose.
Looking at the yelp reviews, I saw that most people recommended the ceviche and the green tamale so we went with that. The order literally took 1-2 minutes to come out (which is a HUGE + for the food truck business). Also the orders came out in paper cones which made handling multiple food significantly easier (another bonus point). The ceviche was surprisingly fresh and yummy. It had tiny pieces of octopus, shrimps, onions and tomatoes. It was lightly coated with lemon juice. The outer layer of the cone was wrapped with hard tortilla so you can break the pieces as you eat. Also at the bottom of the cone was bean paste which went well with the ceviche.
As I looked at the green tamale, it looked more like a deconstructed tamale than a traditional tamale that would be seen inside a corn/banana leaf/husk. This too came in a paper cone and on one side of the cone was the corn breading and the other was the medley of filling such as sour cream, onions, etc. The green tamale was really the winner for me at this truck. It was moist, flavorful and most of all, it felt fresh. It didn't taste heavy like the other tamales filled with oil and meat.
Overall, I had to say that out of the 4 trucks that I tried that day, this truck was by far my favorite for its light and clean taste. -
Review from Isabelle G.
I came here as they had a stand set up for Coachella, the best Mexican on site and the best Nachos that I have had, however, at $14 a pop times two per day at the festival, it adds up. The portions don't justify the cost as there were other deals for cost vs. size, however, given what the other options were, I still had my nacho on. I've seen this truck advertised in food trade magazines and they do have some Food Network cred, however, still out of hand.

After going to 2 other trucks at a food truck festival for snack/dessert food, I decided to search for a place I could get something more substantial, and I found it at the Border Grill truck.
I got the Top Chef Master meal. For $10, it included: Quinoa Fritters, a carne asada quesadilla, and churro tots!!! I'm normally not a fan of quinoa in any form, but decided to try it anyway. Surprisingly, I was a fan. There was melted cheese in the fritters and were seasoned perfectly. The carne asada quesadilla was good, but to be honest, nothing really special. I wish there had been more cheese. The churro tots were awesome. They where basically fried balls covered in cinnamon sugar and came with whipped cream.
All in all, a decent meal. -

I had:
Fish Tacos - good - had to ask for the hot stuff on the side - the aji amarillo aoili was really good
Sonoran Style Hot Dog - bacon wrapped with mayo, mustard, ketchup, and grilled & onions & peppers - yum
Churro Tots - melt in your mouth they are so light!!
Service could have been a little faster but it is worth the wait.
Prices are worth the quality. -

I'm not gonna lie-- that was some good ceviche. Light and flavorful. It left me wanting more... Maybe because it was so small.
No, for real, it's not their fault that I skipped breakfast and was looking forward to a substantial lunch. In this day and age, large portions are frowned upon, so ... I get it.
The avocado taco had some crunch and the guac was good. There was excessive lime on everything, which some folks would find overwhelming, but I liked it.
Overall, 3.5 stars. This would be good for a tasting menu. But I paid $13.50 for ceviche, a small avocado taco and a coke. For the cost, I kind of expected more. -

Another round at the food truck festival landed me in line for Border Grill. I was not super hungry, but was willing to nosh on some the combo meal with a friend. For $10, there is no better deal. Taste on the other hand was ok. The Quinoa Fritters were the highlight of the meal. They were crisp and held their texture well. The Steak Quesadilla was disappointing. The meat was dry and nothing special. The Churro Tots had good flavor, but had a mushy center.
For a quick and inexpensive meal, this cannot be beat. I just wished that the second course could have been as innovative as the other two.Listed in: Latin Love, Get Outside

There are three Border Grill restaurants and a to go outlet. I haven't had a chance to experience the sit down version but I did try out The Border Grill truck.
I gotta admit, their food is surprisingly tasty. I ordered the following:
Potato taco
Crispy Fish taco
Pork taco
While they taste good, I would like another layer of corn tortilla in the tacos. One layer is just not enough.
I enjoyed the potato taco more than I thought I would. It had a nice flavor to it without that heavy feeling from a regular taco.
Overall, the Border Grill Truck delivers some worthwhile tacos on wheels. -

Hit up the Border Grill Truck today to try some tacos
-Potato Rajas Taco was OK, potatoes not fully cooked, but cheese sause was good
-Yucatan Pork Taco orange salsa gave it an excellent citrus flavor, pork was a bit dry, jicama slaw was a nice cruncky element
-Citrus Chicken Taco was well marinated and very flavorful, left me wanting more
-Carne Asada Taco was chewy and lacking (seemed like they cut with the grain), Guacamole was the stand out on this one.
All in all it was a step WAY above your meat, tortilla, cilantro and onion taco.
I don't normally like corn tortillas, but these were great! Glad they only utilized one. Second one always seems to much to me.
Will go back for ceviche and tamal 'cones' but for my money, they Chicken tacos is where it's at. -

I really love this truck! They have a relatively small selection, but what is on their menu is thoughtfully prepared and very well seasoned. The ceviche is really good, and the chicken and beef tacos are super tasty. My surprise favorite is the chicken - it has a nice creamy relish on top that complements the meat perfectly. I've also tried the pork taco, which was quite good (had a little bit of a sour flavor going on that wasn't my fave), and the burrito, which was underwhelming (although a good deal compared to the other foods on the truck). I'll usually order a ceviche and a few tacos, and that is a light lunch. My only real complaint is that eating at this truck can get a bit expensive, but I'll still order from them whenever I see them around.

I can only review based on the one item I had, so I am definitely willing to give these guys another shot the next time they're in the neighborhood. I was tempted to try their ceviche but, with a growling belly, decided instead to go for something more substantial since that item only came as cone. Big mistake. The carne asada burrito was mediocre at best, and is sitting in my stomach like a brick, and despite its heaviness I somehow still feel unsatisfied. Absolutely not worth the $7+ (with tax). Very disappointing, I had high hopes!
Edited to add a third star for AMAZING customer service. Immediately after posting this review I was contacted with an apology and asked how things could be improved. -

Border Grill Truck caught my eye for two reasons: One was the reviews online and two was the Top Chef Masters signage. Very cool indeed. It also had a fairly long line just to note. In the end, I come away conflicted but fairly sure of my opinion - its pretty good but only if you get the dessert and add all the other food options after.
Border Grill sells a variety of different tacos, quesadillas, and fritters along with bottled drink (the cap opener is pretty cool). The price range is about $3-$10 depending on what you get as well as combos.
I had the Top Chef Masters combo meal which comes with a quesadilla, quinoa fritters, and churro tots for $10. I have to admit, my disappointment came in the fritters and the quesadilla. The fritters were interesting...the texture being grainy and the aioli having a unique tinge. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to win me over. The taste was still a bit bland (even with my favorite goat cheese), needing perhaps more sauce or a bit more seasoning. I believe there were 4-5 fritters. The (carne asada) quesadilla I had was also interesting and better than the fritters. I especially loved the cheese which felt like it was a mix between cottage and swiss with a fairly good carne asada. However, once again, it just lacked much of a punch coming in the flavor department.
But hey...the churro tots really made life all better. They were absolutely delicious. Coming in literally 6 balls sprayed with cinnamon, whip cream, and literally packing in dulce de leche into a ball, it was flavorful, not too heavy, and absolutely delicious. It's something that I could imagine eating just walking down the street or during dessert and better than simply a doughnut ball or churro; it just feels all right.
A couple notes about the aesthetics. One thing I appreciated was the food was easy to eat and never felt messy. Also, the truck itself was working hard the night I went with two people inside doing absolutely everything with a long line. I have to hand it to them, they were friendly and were able to be accommodating as well. The truck does need aluminum foil to make wrapping items easier along with napkins/hand sanitizer and some other small sauces (although I understand the last point is more because of tasting the full flavor of the dish rather than soaking on sauces).
All-in-all, Border Grill has my curiosity peaked. A ho-hum appetizer and interesting (but still could be better) entree ended with an absolutely delicious dessert. Its definitely worth a taste (especially those churro tots) but temper your expectations for now... -
Review from Amanda N.
One of the better food trucks that I've tried in LA thus far.
I really like their cones. I ordered the Green Corn Tamal and Peruvian Ceviche cones - both were great. The Green Corn Tamal is a very creative presentation of ingredients and definitely tasty - I would order this again. The Peruvian Ceviche was pretty good as well. The entire meal was a bit pricier for lunch, but most other food trucks end up around the same price point. The Green Corn Tamal was pretty filling, so one cone alone would have been enough.
Overall, I was impressed with the Border Grill Truck. I don't really like food trucks that much, but I think Border Grill is worth a stop for lunch.Listed in: For UCLA students with no car…

Ugh! Overpriced for teeny tiny portions, fried fish bits in a taco that's disgustingly fishy tasting and doubles as a salt lick, and the biggest no-no, adding pinto beans and lettuce to a Peruvian ceviche. What?! O_o
I was so disappointed in throwing $12 away on "lunch" today. I had a snack, not a meal because those two fish tacos went promptly into the trash can. It would have been one throw away taco but the guy taking my order can't seem to get it right and I had to correct him one time already. I don't know how one fish taco can turn into a two taco combo. Then when I told him I wanted ONE taco, he still rang me up for two tacos but not a combo. Terrible service!
This might be my shortest one star review yet cause I can't be inspired to write anymore about this truck.Listed in: Food Truck Flings

Second course from this year's OC Foodie Fest was the "Master's Meal" combo from the Border Grill truck. If you watched this year's past Top Chef Masters, they were Chef Mary Sue Milliken's winning dishes from the show. I thought everything was delicious, and packed some great flavors. Here's the breakdown:
Quinoa fritters (4 stars) - I love to cook quinoa, as it serves as a good alternative to the heavier, starchier carbs like rice and pasta. Deep frying it into fritters with cotija cheese and aji amarillo aioli (mustard-like)? I'm all there. The crunchy exterior (aztec grain) complimented the soft interior. It may look dry, but it's surprisingly moist on the inside.
Carne asada quesadilla (3 stars) - executed well, good flavors from the lime marinated steak. Nothing terribly exciting or original, the tortilla was a bit limp and could've been grilled longer for more crisp -- overall, just a solid quesadilla that I found myself finishing up rather quickly.
Churro tots (5 stars) - my favorite from the truck and dessert overall from the OC Foodie Fest. Forget all the shave ice, ice cream concoctions, fancy drinks, etc. Imagine if a churro and a tater tot got busy in a wild and crazy night. The end result would be these churro tots. The dulce de leche flavor just pops, and the cinnamon sugar gives it a subtle sweetness. Dip into some homemade whipped cream, and I'm in churro tot heaven.Listed in: dru's Food Truck Adventures

Their tacos are pretty small for $3 each. On their menu, their tacos do sound really good though. I had the blackened catfish which has guacamole, beets, and slaw. I was surprise how small the taco and the filling was, each bite costs me $1. The taco was really unique, but it didn't seem worth it.

Picture this...a massive parking lot filled with gourmet food trucks, people EVERYWHERE with no clear direction in sight as you push past them, delicious scents permeating the air...and then all of a sudden, the crowds part to reveal the beautiful behemoth of a truck called the Border Grill. :D
I swear, it almost had a light radiating around it!
For those who don't like to read much, I'll simply say, it's damn good! Go try it! For everyone else, you've got to try the carne asada quesadilla. That was my absolute favorite. Don't expect a traditional style quesadilla though. They use a different kind of cheese (wish I knew what it was but I'm not sure, sorry!) that doesn't completely melt into that ooey, gooey cheesy goodness we've come to expect in quesadillas. Instead it's toasty and warm and just kind of hangs out, giving the carne asada a delicious little embrace, adding some texture, and just making it very damn good.
I followed it up with a fish taco and found it to be just as scrumptious. I only wished my stomach was bigger so I could have had more :) To finish up my yummy Border Grill experience I had the Churro tots, which are exactly what they sound like...churros in tot form! These were very sweet and kept me from eyeballing any other dessert truck in the area, which says a lot. lol.
Aside from the amazing food, I have to give a little shout out to two of the very friendly and professional staff I encountered last night, Jesse and Shane. They just showed outstanding customer service and when it comes to waiting in line for food, that positive attitude makes all the difference! Don't be disheartened by having to wait in line though! remember...Good things come to those who wait!...or in this case, absolutely delicious food will come to you! -

I tried this truck out when they were in Culver City at the Westside food truck central lot. I got three tacos at $3 each (expensive), a creamy chicken cilantro and 2 asada tacos.
First off I give this place a three because the asada was mediocre (and tasted mesquite-y), but the creamy chicken cilantro was delicious. Another thing I wasn't too crazy about were the tortillas. I also wished the food was hot or at least warm/hot. smh
The best thing was the guacamole. -

The Peruvian Ceviche is a must have to try. It's fresh and absolutely delicious! Plus, they serve it pretty quick since they give it to you in a cone. My only gripe is that when they give it to you and you order multiple items, they don't stop to think about how you can carry a cone and everything else. I always have to ask for the cone to be placed in a tray so I can carry things easier.
I ordered the Steak Quesadilla which tastes very similar to the Steak Quesadilla at Baja Fresh so it's decent just nothing jaw dropping in my opinion. -

Tried this truck at the OC block party and was very dissappointed with the food. I tried 4 different tacos and was very underwhelmed with all aspects of them. What kind of mexican food truck doesnt heat their tortillas, which results in them cracking and falling apart when pinching the taco to eat it.

SO GOOD! I've been to the Border Grill restaurant in Downtown, so I went to the truck with high expectations.
I got the "Chef Special" for $10. The fritters were nicely seasoned and fried to a nice crisp, and that spicy yellow sauce that came with it was essential. The carne asada quesadilla was very very good. The white cheese was nicely melted, steak was good and juicy, and tortilla was slightly burned....JUST THE WAY I LIKE IT.
To top if off, this meal also came with it's famous "churro tots." These round balls of theme park goodness came nicely paired with whipping cream. I'll definitely come back! -

Absolutely no line on a rainy day so I had to try it. I've always been a fan of the restaurant so I was interested in trying their truck. I had their fish tacos. They were good. Crisp and tasty with an interesting sauce but it was the fritters that rocked. Just amazing. Light and crisp with excellent flavor. I would definitely get them again. Probably the best thing on the menu.

I was able to try them yesterday at OC Foodie Fest. We got the tamale cone and a chile quesadilla. Both were pretty good. I only had a bite from the tamale cone from my friend, but the bite I had was full of corn, fresh salsa, and yumminess. The poblano chile quesadilla was simple but taste good. There weren't a ton of chiles in it, but for a "mild spicy" lover, it was the perfect taste.
I've tried their potato taco before at another event and it was just alright. I would definitely eat at this truck again if I was in the area or it came down to OC. -

I visited these guys at the fateful OC Foodie fest (see my review).
They gave us drinks when the organizers said no drinks were to be sold.
Very cool guys.
The food was spectacular.
The brisket taquitos were the bomb. You got three or for with the order. The meat was tender and seasoned to perfection.
We also had the corn tamal (in a cone). Very fresh and sweet.
Having many food trucks to choose from we moved on, but these guys were highlights of the show. -

OK, my opinion might be a little jaded here. When I took my wife out on one of our first dates it was to the Border Grill in Santa Monica. Turned out both of us are fans of Susan and Mary Sue!
So when I started to discover the food trucks, I was very anxious to try this one. In a word, it ROCKS!!!!
This is maxican and central/south american food at it's finest.
The cones are my favorite things here and the tacos are right up there as well.
I noticed someone lamenting the small portions. I say if the food is that good, you really don't need a portion that will leave you in a food coma!
The flavors here are balanced, not overly spiced so you can actually taste it and surprisingly well presented.
This truck definitely is in the upper echelon of LA food trucks.
What more can I say!
