    Karaoke time!

Came here one night because friends wanted to do karaoke so said why not. Walked into the bar and must say its a bit small and dingy.  The stage is small where you sing off of and of course they have a drag queen who is your hostess with the mostess for the night.

We arrived during happy hour so drinks were 2 for 1 or 1/2 off don't remember. I ordered double rum and coke and my drink tasted like coke with no rum. :(  The crowd is a mixture of young and old, twinks, non twinks.   It was a bit crowded so i stayed in on spot the whole night.  As the night went on a few drinks and a shot later i was enjoying myself.  I would definitely be back.  All in all it was fun.

I don't know why I assume gay bars open bright and early every day. I'm finding out that's not the case out here, but Boots and Saddle was open on an early Saturday morn-noon when the others weren't. Point for that!

I see they have a weekly Drag Show. Point for that!

The bartender and staff were super friendly. Point for that!

The Bloody Marys, made fresh from the supermarket Bloody Mary mix, was probably one of the worst I've had. No fixings added for oomph. No Tabasco added to slightly disguise the nastiness of the premix. No Tabasco in the place at all! Deduct point for that.

I have no doubt they probably make better fruity drinks, but I'm a dyke that craves for good, hearty, salty, spicy drinks. Kinda surprised that a place like Boots and Saddle wouldn't be able to satisfy that craving. Meh, I'm not their desired clientele anyway, but I do love me a good boys bar (I have a few faves in San Francisco's Leather District)!

    The search continues...

Boots and Saddles. Cakes. Leis. Drag Queens. Underwear contest. This place definitely has an identity crisis, but isn't too bad to keep you away.  I've been here a few times and have had a decent experience taking in the awkwardness that is their drag show. The drag queen who hosts the underwear contest on Saturday night is sweet and actually sings, but don't stand too close to her lest you be the butt of her jokes! There is a two drink minimum (running around $6-7 for a cocktail and $5-6 for a drink) and the Queens don't hesitate to remind you from the stage. The bar is too bright for my tastes, but its better than being too dark. I'll be back again and again, not too spend the whole night, but because I appreciate a bar that embraces the divey-ness part of their being and make no qualms about it! Saddle up!

Once a small, boring 'old man's' bar, Boots & Saddles is now ...something else...though we're not sure exactly what. The small crowd combined older regulars with younger "twinks" and a surprising herd of young girls ogling over the stripper/dancers on the tiny dance space. One twink behind me thought of me as a prize and kept squeezing my tricep muscle. There was a cadre of very bored strippers. Would have been better if the lights were dimmer, the twinks would have quit their whiny bitching, and if the annoying inebriated fag hags would have found other quarters.

I would totally give them 5-stars if I could depend on the AC, but this hot summer has been as hit or miss as some of the clientele in the bathrooms which has led to some sultry evenings of drinking.  Mind you, we still stayed most nights for at least a drink or three.

Anyway, the crowd is always diverse here from older gay bears to underage twinks to straight tourists that I am pretty sure were lost or thought they could rent a horse.  I do love a mixed bag.

The drinks are strong as all get out, as they should be at any gay bar, and most of the bartenders are supremely easy on the eye.  If you haven't seen Cody...well he's gone now and you should kick yourself for not getting here sooner.

Add in a $3 happy hour, fantastic drag karaoke nights on Sunday and Wednesday hosted by one Miss Victoria Chase, a fabulous drag show on Monday presented by one Miss Dallas Dubois and hot black  and latino strippers on Tuesday?

Well, you had me at "hello."  I have spent many a drunken evening here with my besties and I will definitely be spending more.

Go on Sunday - drag karaoke.  Go on Saturday - boys in their underwear.  Go on Wednesday - boys in their underwear singing karaoke.

It doesn't get better, trashier, drunker, dirtier or bathroom line-ier than this place.  And when you're done with karaoke on Sunday, go across the street to Duplex and keep singing to the piano bar.

Like its name suggests, things are always better in pairs. Would you ever order just ONE martini? Absolutely not. Likewise, what's the point of Boots without Saddle?

Not that you should be ordering martinis at Boots & Saddle. It's a "I'll-take-a-shot-and-chase-it-with-this-cheap-bee r" kind of dive. It's about the size of my apartment, but both times I've been there*, it's been rather empty. And those were on Friday and Saturday nights.

Now, what follows is a rundown of what I like to call "Brett, or, Understanding How to be Typical."

Typical: I waltz into a bar wasties.

    Typical: I want to dance.

    Typical: I do.

Typical: But right after I pee.

Typical: It doesn't take a lot to impress me. You're going to let me waltz in here wasties and dance? You're alright in my little (empty) black book.

We were maybe the youngest ones there, dancing as the '80s hits spun on a Saturday night. But the older patrons were eating it up . . . or just ignoring us and talking to themselves. Either way, there didn't seem to be any animosity, which is nice because, let's face it, our group can be a MESS.

My big tip for B&S is: don't start your night there, and don't end it there either. It's a middle-of-the-road pit stop for your typical, nightly adventures.
    __________

    * Yes, I've only been there twice. Yet I feel confident in what I have to say about ol' B&S. Even if it's really just BS.

Bar tenders and no longer friendly as the good ones left.  They are too intested in selling alcohol. Also.  If you want to by a brink for some one they won't let you in fear they will be insulted and leave.

Two of my gay co-workers expected me to achieve a culture shock, but little did they know as this straight Canto Chigga had her first taste at HK Lounge in Hell's Kitchen prior to Boots & Saddle.

Boots & Saddle is a staple to the Village community as well as to the gay community, specifically to fossils.  A full-service bar with gay male strippers in thongs, panties in black boots with a nice physique.  Ooo, la la!  (A good physique without all the hype of surgrical or performance enhanced drugs to boast one's body for a built-body, which Boots & Saddle's gay strip dancers clearly upholds).  There is a small stage for strippers to dance.  Upon a quick scan of the bar, there are very few women which (I believe) there is no women rest rooms.

Overall, to my co-workers rather than a culture shock was a mannerism shock as I received a sincere compliment from a gay patron "you look beautiful" and was playfully teased by a gay male stripper.  Crossiant worthy! One word:  WOW!  Why can't straight men be sincere with their feelings/compliments for me?  After the three of us finished our drinks we departed, which I was tipsy yet blushing happily for the compliment and was flattered by a gay male stripper.  As a straight lady, it feels good to be finally geninuely appreciated and sincerely complimented without the standard white lies of:  "I still have trouble with accepting, my heart not in love."

The music has a very good stereo sound system playing to 1990's Ace of Base's "All That She Wants", and 2000's era.  This bar is very dark with poor lighting.

I rarely came in here when I frequented the West Village before my move to DC. Came here yesterday with not much money in my pocket and determined not to go to the ATM to have more alcohol.  Looks like I came to the right place as I ordered 3 screwdrivers.  As I was debating whether to leave or not the bartender poured me a free round.  Then I paid for the next one.  The 6th round was free as well.  Must come back here more often

Good bartenders and cheap prices.  I've heard some really good DJ's there. The drag shows are tragic and trashy. The Go-Go boys were skeevy. There are a lot of older guys and hustlers there. Every time we go in there the owner covers the bar with more and more liquor ads.

Can't rate no stars? The place is a shit hole.  One afternoon, we were walking to the Factory, a late lamented coffee house on Christopher Street.  My partner who walks slow due to a disability got caught short and asked the barperson if he could use the bathroom.  He had a cane so the f*cking creep behind the bar could see he was disabled.  The moron yelled obscenities at him a virtually threw him out of the bar.  Luckily, he was able to make it to the Factory in time.  Whatever happened to Gay camaraderie and sensitivity?

This place will never see any of my gay dollars....EVER!

Ok to start of with, let me state that this place is the kind that you can only visit once and your experience will be either GREAT or HORRIBLE. In either case though, you wont want to visit it more than once.

My first experience here was on Cinco De Mayo. We were with a friend who did not have an ID so we were looking to sneak into places. Most places in the neighborhood were not carding actually but were completely dead and we were, as usual, looking for some crazy type of fun. Well... we GOT IT!

This was the only place that was actually filled with people and was not carding... Yay just what we wanted!!! So we go in and make our way to the back of the bar where there were a couple tables empty. The entire bar was filled with slightly older men and very Fem-type younger guys. There were perhaps only two good looking (maybe relatively) men in the whole place. The  TV screens played hashed up Britney, Beyonce, Madonna, and Gaga videos while music along with it was purely Gaga (there's a surprise).

We asked the bartender for their 5 dollar margaritas. Well guess what... they didn't have them. Why? The mostly Spanish speaking Bartender, with a horrible physique that should not be outside of a shirt, failed to explain. He offered a solution... Iced Margaritas. Well, why not? we said. 15 minutes later we found out why not. The ice needs to be crushed and made into a slushy form and that takes about 15 minutes and the ice is only enough for 2 Iced Margaritas. So my friend had to endure the place completely sober for another 15 minutes. The margaritas were pretty strong though!

So finally when we all had our drinks, we sat happily sucking the thick alcoholic slush through a straw tiny enough to be from a juice box. Again, why? Dont know. Just as we were getting buzzed we smell a strong odor, we look at each other and find that we are all pretty clean. I know I shower daily and so do my friends. So where is this odor coming from. Oh yes it is the small Mexican Male Prostitute trying to get a client. Where? At our table. This man tried to hit on all of us. He had a deal for everyone. You could be a woman, a man, a woman with a penis, a man with NO penis... it didnt matter to him. He kept circling the table trying to pick one of us up. I actually felt bad for him and almost took him to the corner pharmacy to buy him a deodorant stick.

After several failed attempts, he tag teamed with his rather blubbier team mate. As we sat hunched forward on our stools. He tried to stick his hand into all of our pants.

As we were being molested, a performance began on the very small dance floor. A small black Fem Guy began to do a one man show. His Dance moves were nothing short of a man having a extreme Panic attack. Exaggerated hip movements, swift turns, neck breaking turn of the head, and smising that would make Tyra Banks jealous.

The whole performance was disrupted by another tranny prostitute being thrown on the floor and beaten by two men. "Oh no, should we rescue her?" We asked. Turns out her partner was blowing men in the bathroom while she stole their stuff. Soon there was a prostitute uproar and a cat fight began.

We figured we had had enough and soon made our exits.

If you are accustomed to nice little bars and fancy clubs, Boots and saddle is not the place for you. If you want to experience one of the most seediest Gay bars in NY then you should definitely come here. It is not a place to go alone!!!! Go with friends on a busy night and laugh at all the absurdness and whackyness! That is all this place is good for!!!

They have a great happy hour. I feel queer folks should go there and visit at least once for the experience. But they are trying to kick out the disadvantaged queer youth who passes by it to go further down to the Christopher Street piers with other businesses. Would have thought a queer bar would support queer causes but apparently not!

Now this is what I'm talking about. My kind of bar. Small, to the point and with a digital jukebox. Hell yes. There isn't a whole lot to review, but what there was, I liked. I wish I could find a bar like this here in San Francisco because God knows I would be a permanent fixture if there were, but there isn't. So instead I have to look forward to my next trip to have a couple here.

Best night to go is now Monday Night for the DALLAS DUBOIS show (MOVED FROM THURSDAY). She is simply entertaining!  Go early to enjoy happy hour and stay for her 10pm drag show. The show has something for everyone and she even takes song requests! However, this dive bar is small and gets a bit hot so be prepared to cool off with cocktails!

Met some great people including a youn pair from Spain who spoke no English. They were glad I could talk to them. Nice neighborhood bar.

Came here for Halloween with some friends since they knew the DJ (real nice guy), but the bartenders annoyed me, all I had were Coors Lights (at $5 a bottle!) and after five of them, with me tipping on every one I wasn't offered a buy back or any acknowledgment of them remembering what drink I had, so the tips stopped from me.  I understand it was a packed night but I've seen bartenders in lesser places with more people treat people better.  Will not be going back.

I've been going to Boots and Saddle on and off since the '80s and do enjoy their happy hour and friendly strippers - BUT - I dropped by yesterday (Monday) to check out their drag queen hosted karaoke night. I liked the crowd and Hans, a sometimes bartender-very friendly-but some tall bartender near the door bitches at me gruffly, minutes after ordering a beer and taking an empty seat with no drinks in front of it, "You took that mans seat, you have to get up!" Really nasty. As a karaoke DJ who works in a bar and has worked at the Roxy in past years, I was appalled. Can this little dump afford to be that clique-ish and catty to new tipping customers ? I for one will never darken their door again.
