They moved this party up to Mezzanine for, I don't know why. We dropped in a couple weeks ago and the drinks were pretty standard, the crowd was pretty mixed, and the music was pretty awesome.
Awesome is an over used word, and I'm over using it here to. They would get to 5 stars if they adopted a rule:
After a song has been mashed up, it should not be mashed up again with any other songs in the same night!!!
But I don't really complain that loudly when Bad Romance plays 4 times.
Booty is quintessential San Francisco. I love it because:
1) the music is great. mashup at it's best.
2) The crowd is VERY diverse, which is awesome. you know how you go to a marina bar and cringe at all the d-bags that you see? or how you go to the mission and don't feel like its completely your scene cause everyone's just a little too cool for school there? or you go to the castro but can't quite get used to the male go-go dancer in a g-string doing his best impression of shakira 3 feet from your face? no? is that only me? ...well, you get my point anyway: booty has all of this, except it's a nice mix! its like a..."mashup"...of people! get it?
yep, you've got your hipster hotties, you've got your weirdo hotties, and you've even got your fair share of plain ol' normal hotties. not to say everyone is hot, but it's not a terrible scene on the whole.
I can't say this is a party that I frequent, because you HAVE to go big. this isn't something you can just decide to do at 11pm on a Sat. but if I've got a friend in town and want to show him/her a good time that is truly unique to san francisco, this is where I bring them.
dress light, cause it gets hotter than korean bbq in there.
The mash-ups are great and they ARE danceable. Show up before 10 pm for $6 cover. It's also nice to arrive early if you want to talk to friends, because it's relatively quieter and very empty at that hour. Don't show up early if you're only there to dance, though, you'll just be bored.
Other great features:
-clean spacious bathrooms!
-interesting space, with upstairs area and another bar there
-taco stand open till 3 am! they don't even gouge you on prices, either. the quesadillas are great =)
-no dress code, which you can sort of tell by looking around... I'd count this as a positive
-really friendly bar staff and bouncers. I saw them asking drunk people whether they were alright and reminding them to drink water.
About that last point: I'd taken off my shoes because they hurt (thanks, DSW clearance) and the employee who walked by was totally nice about telling me not to be barefoot.
Ahh I just love Bootie event so much. So much that I go there at least one time a month!! GREAT mashup music that you can dance to until you realize you should have put on your sneakers instead of your new high heels :)
It can get super crowded. However, the people are usually sweet and they don't mind being squeezing right next to you. Just remember, stay hydrated after jumping around!
Happen to hear about this event through a friend, who heard it from... YELP!
This used to be held at a different venue, but recently moved to Mezzanine. I like the location, its not hard to find free parking - a rarity in SF.
I love mash ups. Hands down 5 stars to Smash up Derby. They mashed up pop with rock - genius.
After Smash up Derby, there were off the wall dancers on the stage. - Cross dressing grandma's with walkers, a guy with no shirt but with suspenders and some mean eyeshadow, all included.
The DJS were pretty awesome, the music was not like any other club I've been to. Pop 80's were mashed up with current pop, mashed with rock beats.
The crowd is SO diverse! The attire for this is anything you want. I saw a wide range of styles at this event - from skirts and heals, to t-shirt and jeans.
My ONLY down thing was that it was VERY, VERY crowded. Maybe they should pick a bigger venue to hold Bootie.
Fun music---- love the mash-up.
The place gets a little hot though once things pick up though- be prepared.
Bootie is just good ol' get down and dirty fun! It's not your typical bourgeois club scene. Admissions are $6 before 10 PM and $12 after 10 PM where you get an awesome "Lesbian Money" stamp on your wrist. (What does that mean? I have no idea.) I don't really find myself standing in line forever in the cold. Not to say there's no line, because you'd have to wait, it's just not like the other clubs. The goers of Bootie are a diverse group, I see the crowds of people from different age groups.
The music is awesome, it's not quite your typical hip hop get down on the floor and shake your ass type of music but really creative mix ups like they'd somehow incorporate "While Your Guitar Gently Weeps" into a danceable song.
The alcohol is pretty strong here, which is a good thing. I usually get the Red Bull Vodka (I can't remember how much it costs, oops! I wonder why.)
10:30 is when Smash Up Derby does their live performance. It's always fun to see live performances, because the band performs with a lot of energy and they really get the crowd into it by playing jams that everyone can sing to. It's like drunken karaoke and dancing all in one. What isn't there to like? By the way, the lead singer has a rockin ass.
Bottom line: Bootie is a place to get your dance and your drink on without having to pay an arm and a leg.
What better way to finish off a nice wholesome Thanksgiving weekend with the parents than to go to a club and dance all night to mash-ups and watch a band fronted by an asexual person with dreads while pirate go-go dancers gyrate on the speakers?
First of all, thanks to my good friend for inviting me out because I never would have assumed I'd have such a good time at DNA Lounge, a place I haven't stepped foot in since I was about 19 using a 32 year old woman's ID (Asians don't age very quickly).
The cover was $12 and they charged $3 for water, though they encouraged me to fill up my empty bottle at the nearest water fountain, which was sweet. Also, they didn't take credit cards, so I was forced to use the freestanding ATM, something I avoid doing at all costs.
Those were pretty much the only negatives I can remember. I was amazed that every time I went to the bathroom I sailed right into a stall with no wait, and sometimes a guy would be at the door making sure I looked presentable before I was allowed back out on the dance floor. Smash Up Derby was great, but not as great as the DJ, whose mashups I enjoyed for hours, even in my uncomfy high heeled booties.
In my old age, I've forgotten the pure fun of shaking your ass for hours in a sweaty, elbow-y crowd but sometimes it just takes the right gays to take you out and show you a good time :)
I must admit that I love a good mash-up. I love the ones that leave me totally floored and thinking to myself, "Oh HELL NO! You did NOT just mix Ozzy with Kelly Clarkson." These DJs did not disappoint me.
The cover and coat check are a bit steep. The line outside moves quickly. The location is pretty convenient. Any club in this area is desirable for anyone who has to cross the bridge. You can drive right over, park just about anywhere, and hurry back over the bridge and get home when you're done for the night.
I was barely coherent because I just got home from Santa Barbara, stone-cold sober because I drove, and somehow still had a really good time. Though I did have to stave off a few men who tried to manhandle me. Not cool. And to the handsome man in the hat, I am so sorry that the drunk #@$%tard totally cut in between us and tried to hump my leg. Really. I didn't enjoy that. I would like to try dancing with you again.
Minus one star because the club smells like ass. Maybe that's why they call it Bootie?
absolutely love this place! great venue, great mash up music, awesome themed parties, not ridiculously expensive drinks, and a great assortment of people. no one is overly pompous or stuck up, and people are generally friendly. love it because it is like 50% gay 50% straight. there needs to be more places like this in SF.
the cover price isn't great ($5 or 6 before 1030 and $12 after) but the place is open till 330am so it's not a bad deal.
One of my fav clubs to dance at. First heard Bootie last NYE at Mezzanine, they were rocking the backroom. Heard "We like the Cars that go Boom!" and "Baby you can drive my car" mashup and it was love at first sound. Loved it at the Cherry Bar and still love it at DNA. Great stage shows, and interesting peeps never a boring time. Where else can you dance to Kelly Clarkson and NIN next to a tranny in a neckbrace?
I've been a fan of mash-ups since I heard Party Ben's SixxMixx on Live 105 a few years back. This biweekly party at DNA Lounge is all about mash-ups, every 2nd and 4th Saturday. The house mash-up band, Smash-Up Derby, plays a set at each event. You'd think live mash-ups would be weird, but it's actually quite thrilling. The band put on special shows when I saw them - first time they had guest singers from the audience and played Twitter requests, second time they put on a Christmas show with special appearance by Lady GaGa...lookalike.
The crowd is your typical Bay Area club mix, with maybe a little more alternative flavor and chill attitude thrown in. Most people come here to dance, and the dance floor gets packed. I expected everyone to be punk/goth/hipster, but that was not the case. Early comers get half off cover and possibly a mash-up cd - quite a good deal. Recalling which songs are being mashed up is loads of fun, and as far as I know this is the only regular mash-up event in the city.
Don't have to dress up
Don't have to push guys off of your ass all night
Don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a drink
Don't have to wait in a ridiculous line to PEE
Don't have to worry about possibly getting into a fight
So yeah, Bootie is the exact opposite of all other clubs out there.
THIS IS WHY IT IS SO AMAZING.
As I was reading through my past reviews, I couldn't believe that I previously gave Bootie a mere four stars. Bootie is far and away my favorite club in the city. Everything about Bootie - its eclectic crowd, super friendly staff, awesome venue, and of course, the best, most danceable music you'll find anywhere - keeps me coming back once or twice a month.
The mash-ups here (both live and pre-recorded) are simply ridiculous. Not to mention, Bootie just has such a positive, energetic, inclusive vibe that's always a refreshing change of pace from the stuffier, more pretentious clubs in the city.
Definitely give Bootie a visit if you haven't already!

After hearing so much about Bootie, I expected the place to be, simply put, amazing. I was a little disappointed once I got there. The cover was $10, aptly so for an SF nightclub, but I wouldn't pay that again to go to this club.
The place was a big open warehouse-esq place with a top and bottom level. There was 1 bar in the corner and they served pretty good drinks-expensive but pretty good. The cool thing about Bootie is the live band. They're pretty amazing. I forget the name of the lead singer, but she's pretty fabulous. Like really fabulous. They play great cover songs that you can rock out to on the dance floor. Also, there's a taco bar on the second level that's open till 3 am so if you're hungry after dancing, you just climb on up to the second floor and get your tacos!
The bad (and this is really important)- they only play mashup songs. It's difficult to really dance to the songs they play because it's not really dancable music. They're great to listen to but not for dancing. I realize that this is what Bootie is known for, but If Bootie changed their music selections (or added something other than mashups) it would be an even better dance club!
I love Bootie. The vibe is really chill and the people who go to the club are there to dance and are actually nice and courteous! No snotty attitude about anything. People wear whatever they want from wild club wear to jeans and flip flops and everyone has a smile on their face. And eclectic crowd of happy people and life affirming positive dance club where you can be yourself.
Bootie, bootie, bootie, ROCKIN' EVERYWHERE!
Bootie is probably the only place that will get me to drop it low one minute and headbanging the next. It is also the only night venue that passes out packets of honey roasted peanuts--airplane style--with your beer!
The music's great--featuring various live acts and mash-up djs. They bring in the old and new school. My favorite mix had to be the taylor swift vs kanye west. Not only did they bring in pop culture news, but they threw two totally opposite music styles together. a-ma-zing. The best thing about bringing some old school music in is being able to sing along to music you havent heard for a while. I had a great time singing to journey while jumping up and down along with the crowd to the live band. My thighs got a good workout by the end of the night.
My latest discovery of this great place was their regular staff. Unlike most venues with impatient and b*tchy security guards, Bootie's staff is friendly and understanding. My friend stumbled into the guard who was watching the door for smokers and he held her up, spoke to her patiently despite her drunken babbling, gave her a bottle of water and asked her to just chill for a moment on the side. Yes, they give you FREE bottles of water if you need it. It's probably part of what your $12 cover's funding. I'd say it's worth it.
The line to Bootie was particularly long the night I went, but it moved quickly. We did notice a staff standing in line in front of us. It turns out that's the cut off for those who got in line by 10pm for the $6 cover fee. Yep, IN line before 10pm, not through the door by 10pm. There's no shady filtering like most night clubs.
Did I mention that there's rarely a long wait for the restrooms? The stalls might be a little on the cramp side, but atleast I dont have to stand in line doing the pee-dance. I was surprised since there were so many people in the venue.
Bootie brings everything--great music, strong drinks, snacks, friendly staff, an eclectic mix of san franciscans, and of course the pirate and the bunnie dancing on top of the speakers.
Boooootie Halloween bitches!
This was possibly the greatest Halloween weekend ever, thanks to Bootie. It was my first time, but we arrived a little late and unfortunately missed Smash Up Derby, which I was really looking forward to. And apparently, my other friend said we missed the best mixes in the beginning. Either way, I had such a good time, the mashups were off the chain, and it was just an overall great environment with an eclectic mix of people.
I don't like going to clubs that are overflowing with either hipsters or hip hop heads, or clubs that play too much electro/indie stuff or rap. Which is probably why I avoid clubs in the first place. Bootie hits a good balance and makes everyone a happy camper.
Staff was very accommodating. My roommate lost her cell phone and out of nowhere, a staff member came around and busted out her flashlight to help us search for the phone. She eventually found the phone which was returned to lost and found by a kind soul on the dance floor.
I am definitely coming back for more ass, I mean, bootie.
Happy Birthday BRO!
and
Mad love to Smash Up Derby!!!
Went here again with crew to celebrate burthday! I like burthday! Got a table with food and drinkable party favors. The clear kind! ;D
Back to Smash Up Derby.. those guys can do live mash ups in ways I can never imagine. And don't get me started on their youtube vids with those HOT dancers! ZOMG! After all this time I just found out that YES, they do serve food here. ZOMG! Who knew? I didn't! Why didn't I notice that last time?
Anywho, love Smash Up Derby... love BootieSF.... love the mash-up-house in the backroom... love the energy here... love love love!
;D

--No seriously, WTF did we do that Saturday???… Read more »
I had a fan-freakintastic time here this weekend. Only downside was that I dumped a drink on a poor girl. I tried to buy her another one....but she wouldn't let me. Sorry dude!!
The music was really fun, I knew every song, and I got to dance on a box like a go-go dancer. Everyone was polite, no crappy crowd behavior like I expected, and I even met some pirates. The next time I am in town I know that I will come here to dance. SO surprised to actually just find a fun nice environment to dance.
Bar is cash only. No ice water, but drinking fountains near the bathrooms. Tickets are cheaper if you buy them in advance or before 10pm; we got there about 10:30 and had no trouble getting in, $12 bucks each...good thing because I was about to pee in line.
Next time I'm totally wearing a dorky pirate hat.
Bootie is my favorite recurring event in SF. Beyond my love of mashups, I am pretty convinced that Bootie works well for me because DNA Lounge is a ridiculously great venue space.
As in, it's a big place, so that when things get crowded people can wander around. During this time you may notice that drinks are relatively expensive. That plus the cover which is $12 after 10 pm usually means Bootie is not a "cheap" night out.
OK so for some reason the venue layout reminds me a bit of Ruby Skye because on the second level you can hang out and watch all the craziness below... but even better - you won't be surrounded by d-bags while doing so.
Most of the people who come to Bootie are wonderful, open, smiling... I think to enjoy mashups you probably need to have a little bit of that kind of mindset...
Just back from a couple days in SF for the holiday and went back to bootie. ;)
i had the most excellent time shaking my nether regions at the world famous bootie party! I think someone slipped some X in my wine because I don't usually dance...and I don't normally take my robe off since I don't wear undies but security didn't mind!
SO. MUCH. FUN.
Went there last night with ten friends and had an AMAZING time.
The crowd was very high energy and fun (a great mix of people!), the music was awesome, the bartender was sooo nice.
A huge plus that it was crowded but not disgustingly crowded, and it was pretty well-ventilated (not hot and sweaty like most clubs)...We were able to dance nonstop for 3 hours!
Can't wait to go back.
Bootie exceeded my expectations. The place has a big dance floor and awesome music. If you love mashups and don't like dressing up then this is the place for you. If you're bummed when you have to leave at 2am at other places, then this is the place for you because they open pretty late.
huge dance club with live music/djs
Love it here!!!!!! Great music. You come here to dance dance dance. Definitely more of a laid back, hipster feel but you can dress however you like!!! The cover is $12 and they don't take card so I need to knock down .5 star for that. And another .5 cause it seemed like ALL THE CUTE GUYS WERE GAY!! However this place is perfect for girls night out without the pressure and creepy stares from ugly, desperado guys. Drink prices are normal but when I ordered my AMF I saw the bartendar put like 6 different types of VERY STRONG alcohol in it with a little bit of syrup and food coloring. I knew I would be drunk after that so the $10 drink wuz TOTALLY worth it.
COME here for an amazing time if you want to dance your a** off. I think next time I come here I want to try and dress more hipster-like for fun!
My head is still spinning from Bootie SF. Also, there's a funny ringing in my ears and an inexplicable need to keep dancing. All of this experience and I'm stone cold sober. It is THAT GOOD.
Now, mashups aren't for everyone. For the uninitiated, you take two pretty awesome songs and you blend them together, stealing pieces from both to create a unique new sound. If that sounds even remotely neat, you owe it to yourself to get over to http://www.bootieusa.com/ and acquaint yourself with some tracks. If it's not your thing, I feel like that's okay too, as there's enough going on to keep you interested throughout the night. Let's break it down.
My friend Steph and I got a late start on the night, and added a bit of "lost in SF"ness to the whole ordeal. Getting to the DNA lounge is a bit rough from San Jose. We found some street parking over by the Costco lot, though really it's a crapshoot finding parking in this area of the city. There was no line to get in at about 10:15ish so we got into the club no problem. Hand stamped and a drink later, we started our night.
The structure of Bootie leaves the stage of DNA Lounge unavailable through the first part of the night so that Smash-Up Derby can do their set. Since it doesn't fill up until it nears midnight, this actually works rather well. We danced downstairs near the right side and eventually wandered upstairs to check out the lounge. There was karaoke lined up to happen post midnight, and in the meantime there was a great set underway. Cue some more dancing. We finally wandered back out to the main floor and watched the rest of Smash-Up Derby from upstairs. As they wrapped up, something awesome happened. The club f*ing transformed.
Dance remixes hit the turntables, the stage was cleared, and next thing you know, every single raised platform in the place was a dancing surface. It's exactly the kind of atmosphere you want a club to become-- the post-midnight energy was intense. Somewhere in all of that it became time to go. That was the biggest downer of the night. I think if all clubs could pull this off on weekends, I'd be looking to live up in SF just for the partying. I think this will be my destination on/around when my birthday is. Yes. Yes it shall.
Bring your best out, 'cause this party's too bootylicious for ya babe.
One of my favorite clubs in the city!
Going clubbing in SF can get a bit weary. You have to deal with spotty DJs, lines, picky bouncers, dress codes (mostly for guys), and the occasional prissy atmosphere. But at Bootie, it really is all about the music.
The mashups are amazing, and I love the eclectic crowds. I don't think any two nights at Bootie are the same.
Notes:
- Cash bar, but there's an ATM machine inside.
- $6 cover before 10pm, and $12 after.
This past month, we went for the 6th anniversary event, and they gave out CDs with the night's mashups. Unfortunately I had nowhere to put it because girls don't have pockets, but it was so nice of them. :)
'Til next month!
Mashups are the best! Who knew they would lead to DANCING ALL NIGHT LONG!
Here are my favorite mashups, which now make BOOTIE @ DNA my go-to dance club for sure!
Large dance floor + multi-story = lots of room to bust your moves and take a breather while watching other folks bust their moves
Hipsters + gay folk + young + old + music lovers = one big happy family of dancing queens, extra friendly company, and memorable nights!
Drink specials (note: cash only bar) + large bar space = free flowing fun.
Special line with guest list (make sure you register or wrath of $$ cover charge awaits) + no lines before 11 = instant fun gratification.
Mashup DJ + Smashup Derby = awesome mixes and live entertainment to dance the night away!
Adrien, Mysterious D, Smash Up Derby, John John, are the Best performers at this spectacular venue and bring in Hot Talent regularly.
The dance floors are bumping, the crowds are hot, the mix is great, always a sexy, wild, and hopefully inebriated time to be had. Get their fashionably and stay late.
Good for large groups of fantastic people.
This is probably my favorite re-occurring party in the city. It is so amazingly fun. If you like great music (no matter what genre) and love dancing, you're missing out if you haven't been to Bootie.
Location: Fun location with tons to do around in the SOMA. There are restaurants, other bars, etc. A bit tricky to get to if you don't drive so make sure to stack up the taxi money.
Space: Bootie takes place at the DNA lounge, which used to be, and some days still is, a truly goth venue. Yes, I said goth. There are two dance floors, one down stairs with a stage and one upstairs, as well as three bars. It's huge! And always packed.
Ambiance: This is my favorite part. It's super diverse inside. There are young people, old people, people of all backgrounds and from all neighborhoods of San Francisco. There are hipsters, yuppies, marina people, geeks, gays, everything. It's actually one of the first and only places that has equal parts gay and straight. BUT the music is the true allure of this place. They have mash-up music, meaning Madonna will play mixed in with MJ, or Social Distortion will play with Prince, it's really really amazing. Best place to dance. There's also a performance till like 11:30 with awesome goth performers singing YMCA.
Service: Awesome service. Despite the hoards of people, there are three bars where you can get drinks pretty quickly. The drinks will also f**k you up. I had two martinis and then asked the bartender for a third "big" martini. He made fun of me and then gave it to me for free--I LOVE HIM.
Food/Drink: The drinks are served in plastic, so don't think this is a fancy affair. They're strong and generally well priced...considering you had to pay $15 to get in. And they will do the work of messing you up and improving your dance moves.
Overall: My favorite place to be every other Saturday. I don't know why I hadn't come in such a long time. Love Bootie.
Great ambience and even better music. I'm not much of a club-goer anymore, but the occasional appearance to Bootie is much loved. One of my first dates with Elaine was here, and that was one night to remember. We'll be back sometime, once our lives get a little less hectic. Oh, and Smash-Up Derby rocks my socks.
Bootie SF is awesome, I've only gone once but I had a blast there.
The music was awesome and there was a lot of room to dance, except for the occasional douchebag that kept running into you.
One huge woman pierced my foot with her 5 inch heels.
What I liked about it was the mixed crowed that ended up there, you get all different kinds of people, instead of the one to two different cliques of people you usually see at other clubs. I'd highly suggest going during a bootie night.
For my 400th review... drumroll please...
...
In a word, no.
I have discovered I DESPISE mashups.
I kept hearing all these awesome songs I loved, only to have them paired with something I hated or cut off right as it got to the best part.
The music upstairs was pretty good, with a better D.J. but I was there for a birthday bash and the b-day girl liked the downstairs. Which meant we got to catch the ... I dunno... burlesque show?
The show was extremely good for the self esteem body wise but besides a couple acts (The girl who danced with a partner to Lola and the "Sparkly devil") it really wasn't well done. I know... nakedness... music... whats not to love? But it was really awkward looking, especially the first girl who looked about 12.
I just kept comparing it to Deathguild, where people are polite and there aren't any drunk blonde chicks who can't dance seizuring behind you to get some frat boys attention.
I doubt I'll be back, it's just not my scene.
I'm not really a fan of mashups because they either ruin 2 perfectly good songs or I am forced to listen to crap mixed with something I used to like. It's lose/ lose. The music at Bootie wasn't bad though. The crowd was very mixed and it never got too hot or stuffy.
We had started the night at the house of the magic toilet so we were all pretty happy when we arrived at Bootie. Then, a Beyonce mashup came on, someone tripped a little and was escorted out immediately by a bouncer. This was at 11:45. But they were very nice to him as they lead him out and gave him water to drink while he was supposed to calm down Then they let him back in. Reading these other reviews, it sounds like we dealt with the only nice bouncers there.
We danced more, watched a boring drag performance, did some battling with people that I hope were intoxicated and then the timeout guy almost got into a fight without ever knowing it. Later as we were walking home, I saw people falling and not being able to get up, Asian tempers flaring, a photo op couch, a bear club and a big gigantic dog. Could the night have been any better?
Saturday 11.14.09. DJ Tripp headlining. It was ok. I felt like the DJs mailed it in big time. Largely pre-recorded & disappointing. I felt like the crowd wasn't expecting the best, didn't get the best, and had a good time. I still danced and had a decent time, but it was truly not amazing.
Why am I currently losing valuable sleep on a school night writing this review? Because if I weren't you'd be missing out on me telling you why you should cancel your plans for Saturday and go to Bootie instead.
Now, I don't know if you know me, but let me clue you in: I love to shake it. My friends have even developed a rating system by which they can tell how fun/drunk/sweaty my night is based on my, umm, moves.
Stage one: hand in the air, waiving it like I just don't care. Usually occurs between 9-10pm, 1-2 drinks, minimal perspiration.
Stage two: Hand behind the head, elbow out, hips really starting to gyrate and "groove" (can I say that?). 10-11pm, 3-5 drinks, still only minor cardio activity.
Stage three is where it's at: Hand behind the head, elbow out, and head buried in my bicep like I was making love to it. Hips swaggering, thrusting, jerking (remember Elaine?). 11pm+, 5+ drinks, it's gonna be a fun night. It's best to stand back if you see me at this stage, because if you're within 10 feet, chances are I'm probably on you. Like, actually on you in ways you never thought possible while still having your clothes on.
All that to say that when I step foot across the threshold of this mecca of dance, there's some sort of overpowering force from above that immediately directs me to stage three. No warning; step back. I'm probably already on you before we get inside.
The music is great. Mash ups like you've never heard (and won't hear anywhere else), live music, the works. I haven't been to any place in San Francisco where every district in the city is represented in the clientele. You'll definitely find "your type" here, no matter who it is. No one cares who you are, or how "down" you want to get on the dance floor.
In sum, I'd rather go eat a burrito than wait in a line or pay a cover, but Bootie is my exception.
Well, I went to the valentines day Bootie and I have to retract my boo for bootie, and replace it with a woobootiehoo!
Allow me to respond to all the previously mentioned pitfalls:
Cover - My valentine paid mine. But for the live band and crowd, I'd now pay it!
Drinks - Get a beer. A Newcastle. They're cheaper than well drinks, larger than well drinks, and come with peanuts. However, bartender service could be nicer. And yes, I know it's a packed, crazy bar.
Crowd - Was even better.
Music - OMG! They rocked the house last Saturday! Especially the bootie band. I don't know who it is, but Yea! YEA! YEAAA!!!

Event = Bootie
Venue = DNA Lounge
I've been a few times and yet to be as "wowed" as all my friends. I… Read more »
The first time I discovered Bootie was at Burning Man ( Yes, I know what you're thinking- "That's what she said".) I was roaming around the Playa trying to find a party to my taste, but I had heard enough trance that night, and was craving a funky alternative.
Then all of a sudden, I heard this music playing from afar. It confused me. "What is this stuff, I thought, "Is it Nine Inch Nails, or Ace of Base?"
No. It was BOTH.
I pedaled my bike to the source, and then the real fun began. Track after track brought a surprised smile to my face as I danced the night away with an enthusiastic assortment of mashup lovers. I think I called it quits at around 5 am or so. I kept trying to leave because I knew I needed to pass out, but then another ridiculous mashup would pop on, bringing on feelings of glee and nostalgia as some of my favorite retro dance songs mingled with current chart-topping guilty pleasures.
Needless to say, I am now a fan of mashups. And while the party at the DNA lounge will never be quite like the one in Black Rock City, it is a very close runner up.
Things to note:
- Cover is cheaper if you get in before 10.
- You can order absinthe there if that's your thing.
- If you feel the urge to wear bunny ears or a pirate hat to this place, you will still fit in.
