We missed the last train at 4:00 on a Saturday (the museum closes at 5), but we weren't charged admission, which was a huge plus. We climbed all over the trains that were outside, walked all around the sprawling grounds, and fed the goats. There's also a playground area, sandbox, and other kid-friendly stuff to do. Officially, I think the mannequins dressed in period clothes are the creepiest I've seen, the makeup was so bad. Otherwise, very informative and good place to explore for train enthusiasts. Thomas the Tank Engine makes stops there for two weekends, I'm guessing every August, which could be something to plan for.
There are also antique cars, but the trains for us were the main attraction. -

If you like trains, and/or have children, Boothbay Railway Village is a "must visit." My grandson spent a good portion of the day playing on the two sets of trains. We also enjoyed the train ride on a coal fired train. There's also a kiddie train ride, antique cars, a small village... but we didn't have time! One of my grandson's favorite places!
