While on our way out of Texas, having just passed through Amarillo, we suddenly remembered that we had somehow managed to forget to ingest beef whilst passing through the ancestral lands of GIANT STEAK restaurants. So we considered ourselves lucky to pass by this place on our way through a tiny-teeny outlying town called Vega. It looked considerably less run-down than the rest of the scenery, and was less hideously-neon-encrusted than virtually everything else in Texas, so we figured, why not? We have a car, we're armed, if it looks like something out of Deliverance inside, we'll just run for it. We stopped for lunch.

And it was excellent. I really think we couldn't have chosen better if we'd been habitués of every steak restaurant in the region. It being late lunchtime, it was quiet - only a few hungry cowboy-types digging in at a table in the front, and a be-cowboy-booted middle-aged couple seated in the back - but i could envision clearly that this place must get packed in the evening.

The space is divided by smoking and non-, front and back, respectively, separated by the obligatory batwing saloon doors. Front is smoking, dining and bar; rear is dining. Both sides are beautifully decorated in de rigeur old-timey-souvenir-photo style, which should be completely hokey but manages to come off as amusingly tongue-in-cheek. Not wishing to disturb hungry cowboys with our weird Coloradoan antics, we sat in back, which also featured a beautiful pressed-tin ceiling that looked shiny-new. Doors in back fronted on what looks like a back courtyard, so i can imagine this place on a summer night replete with western-swing-dancing cowboys under some christmas lights, and maybe the occasional bar fight. that's how it's suppoed to be, isn't it?

The service was excellent. Our waitress - who couldn't have been older than seventeen by her braces, and was suitably attired in boots and jeans - hurried to get us any odd thing we asked about, with the kind of great earnestness that usually means this is one's first job, or else that it is the best job in town (either of which i can believe).  She forgot nothing, was prompt and unfailingly sweet, knew what she was doing, seemed genuinely pleased that we were enjoying ourselves.

After unsuccessfully perusing the children's menu* for something the portion-equivalent of my orange-sized stomach, I had the smallest steak available on the menu, which was still so enormous that i had leftovers when we got back to Denver.  i ordered it medium-rare; it arrived a little more medium than rare, but still was tolerably juicy delicious, an unusual thing for a strip steak, so i called it good. it arrived with sweet-potato fries done as perfectly as i've ever had them, grilled zucchini slices which weren't *quite* done, and an iceberg salad which was as tolerable as iceberg lettuce ever is. if you read my other reviews you know that i despise iceberg lettuce as a non-food, so the less said about it, the better. At any rate, nothing was overly greasy, and for such substantial fare, it felt remarkably light going down, another rarity.

Erstwhile Helpmeet here had a shaved Angus burger with Idaho fries, and was so overcome with joy that he could communicate only with extreme gyrations of his eyeballs and various modulations of nose-panting for several minutes. After which the general tone of his remarks tended towards the typically voluble "OH THIS IS SO GOOD" variety.

*a quick note on the children's menu, which our poor waitress discovered had been hidden somewhere in the bar and was required to search the entire restaurant to find a copy of - apologizing profusely for the delay (all of five minutes, oh no!) when she brought it to us: very typical, very spare 'child food' selection. everything is deepfried: there don't seem to be any healthconscious choices on the child menu at all. of course, this is Texas, so such things may not be as much an issue as they are here in Colorado.

another note: apparently this restaurant is owned by a country singer and former Country-Music channel reality-show contestant. IIRC she is from New Jersey, which just makes the whole picture a little mindboggling.

In sum, a lovely atmosphere, beautiful setting, excellent fare, very reasonable prices, great service. how can you go wrong?

My family stumbled upon this restaurant while traveling across country. It was a Friday night (maybe around 7) and this was the only place in town that was open. The exterior did resemble a Midwestern saloon with a touch of modern lighting. As we walked in with our party of 4 we were delighted to see that it wasn't busy (just two groups) but unfortunately no one seemed to notice that we were there. We stood by the hostess desk for a good 10 minutes until my step dad decided to waive someone down.

The servers were dressed as dance hall girls and we were seated at an unstable table. Although there were more empty tables than there were people, the servers worked as like it was a packed night . We ordered two full racks of ribs that night. They were served medium hot and it seemed like the chef just slapped the bbq sauce on top. Not impressed. Servers seemed almost annoyed at our requests, but we still managed to tip them well.

Overall, service was poor, food was OK. If I ever find myself in Vega again, I guess I can give it a second chance...

Maybe we went on an off-night.  The food was served cool (ribs) to warm (filet).  Flavor of both was really good, but food should be served piping hot! Potato side over-cooked.  Appetizer (green chile chicken won tons) were good, as were the salads.  Bartender James very nice and helpful. Full bar, great drinks. We'll try it again.
