Four words: fried mac and cheese. You will initially come for the blue crab, but you will come back for the fried mac and cheese.
The Boondocks' menu is written on a paper place mat and almost everything that isn't fresh crab is deep fried. And the mac and cheese are little fried triangles of heavenly yumminess.
They have fresh blue crab all summer long, but have frozen dungeoness crab year round. The atmosphere is quirky and the waitresses are time-tested, crab-slinging professionals. There is nothing on the menu for vegetarians (aside from the many deep fried appetizers.) The Pig Out is always a popular choice - it comes with chicken wings, half a dozen crab, steamed shrimp, hush puppies, and two ears of corn. The crabioli is surprisingly good and comes with a butter sauce with large chunks of crab in it.
They have a screened in porch, but be prepared and bring some bug spray. If you sit out there, you might get a few mosquitoes feasting on you as you feast on the crab.
In the middle of a cornfield on the outskirts of Smyrna, the name The Boondocks is well deserved for this fun and quirky crab joint.

Review from Matt R.
Smyrna, DE
Went here recently with some co-workers to try out a new Smyrna restaurant. The great thing about this place is that, in-season, the seafood is all extraordinarily fresh. The unfortunate thing is that the primary trick in the chef's repertoire is "fried," which in my opinion tends to mask the savory flavor of fresh seafood. Their hush puppies (also fried) are delicious - a hard-to-find southern treat in these northern demesnes.
The price is a bit higher than other local restaurants, but there are several menu items whose extraordinarily large portions justify that price. The selection of beers on tap was decidedly average; I do wish I had tried their signature "swamp water" drink. The ambiance was decidedly apropos for local Smyrna restaurant (the bathroom is bedecked with clothing items from a woman's boudoir), but certainly no complaints about cleanliness.
All in all, I liked it well enough to consider trying it again, but I won't be a regular. -

Eating here is definitely an experience. A hammer, paper towels, plastic on the tables, and the drinking glasses are glass jars. It's a fun place to go for yummy fresh crabs in the summer.
When else do you get to beat stuff with a hammer in public? It's good fresh seafood in a fun atmosphere. Just don't bring any vegetarians or people who don't like seafood. -

Was supposed to go to Sambos with my family but they ran out of crab so we ended up here and we loved it. We immediately got a friendlier welcome then we did at Sambos, and my whole family had a great experience. Food was delicious, drinks were outrageous and the whole atmosphere just screamed fun. I will never forget that dinner. And I'm very forgetful.

All crab shacks are not created equal! Only people who are lost, or just locals, will find this place. The restaurant has three distinctive eating areas to accommodate large groups or functions. The dinner tables are covered in plastic, instead of paper, to assist in cleanup. I didn't like the plastic always sticking to my arms when I rested my arms on the table. The waitress was friendly and the service was good. There is a small flag inside the paper towel to wave, when you need your server's attention. The menu was simple and the pricing seemed high. The 1/2 lb of steamed shrimp was $13 dollars. I had two crab cakes, fries and slaw...$21 dollars! The crab cakes were overcooked and didn't have much crab meat in it! They should call them hush puppy cakes. Quirky note: this establishment uses woman's bras and corsets suspended from the bathroom ceiling for decoration! I don't know if the underwear was purchased or from party hardy restaurant patrons.
