Dressing for a them party? Need a rental? Just love and wearing Vintage? You need it, they have it!
I have been there several times over the last few years outfitting my theme party needs! I love the staff friendly and always willing to help! VERY reasonably priced clothing and shoes! -
Review from Matt E.
I am a man. And sometimes a man has needs. And sometimes a man needs a retro tuxedo that is as close to the color of meatballs as possible. Thank god for Boomerang.
This store is a trip. Half costume rental and half vintage store (ok, maybe more like a 60/40) split, it is easy to get lost in all of their completely wacked-out selections. Need a fishnet tank top? Boomerang has you covered. Rhinestone-covered western shirts? Yep, Boomerang has those. Different oversized sunglasses for every day of the week. You gotta go to Boomerang! If you're willing to dig (like at all vintage/thrift stores) you'll definitely find some buried treasure.
The staff is incredibly friendly, but not particularly helpful. I was struggling to piece together the aforementioned tuxedo (rented as pieces rather than an entire tux), and they never offered any sort of assistance. Still, I managed to get it done, and the final look was Capital H Hilarious! Also, for pants, shirt, jacket, tie and cummerbund, it was only a $45 rental fee. Not too bad when needing something for a themed event.
I'm not much of a vintage dresser, so I don't think I'll be any sort of regular, but it's nice to know that Boomerang is there for my random costume needs.Listed in: My Mom Says I'm Funny, Westport and Pennsylvania, Fever Dreams

Best place for gently used and affordably priced cowboy boots!
Working next to Boomerang is wonderful and horrible because I find myself going in "for a quick peek" and then blowing my entire paycheck. Aw, shit.
My manfriend gets 90% of his western wear here - real deal beaver hats, western suits, boots, action slacks, pearl snap ups... So sexy!
They have a huge selection of sunglasses and many popular costumes available for rent (disco suits, Elvis suits, platform heels, etc).
Very fun shopping experience, nice owners, and all-around fun! -

A bastion for lovely ugly xmas sweaters. Holy Crap!
Even though the season is over, I will think of this trove always!
My favorite finds are scarves, bow ties, boots and magazines. Whenever I stop at Chop Tops I hit this store. I've never rented anything from here but have pointed several people in this direction.
Last stop I saw Owl stuff, the sweaters, some vintage furs, nice coats, shiny shoes, Seventeen Magazines from the 60's (trippy!) and yes, bow ties. (Which I'm trying to single-handedly bring back.
Love the owners, love the stuff. -
Review from Rhonda S.
I used to buy clothes from Boomerangs when it was over on 39th and Bell street. So, when Sara D. and I found it the other day, I was thrilled. I wasn't going to review it, I didn't buy anything. But that's not saying I'm not obsessed with it.
The clothes are a tad above thrift stores. I think vintage is an overused word, but vintage is what Boomerang's is all about. But this is absolutely affordable.
First thing you see when entering are a line of boots, used, in real good shape. I am going to go back and have another look. I think I saw some like the boots I want.
Beyond the boots are the clothes. Tons of clothes. Cool clothes that would rock my closet. For the one sweater that may not be there when I return, there's many more.
Lots of dresses, well labeled, in order of the years, then sizes. Colors and shapes, formals and casual dresses. From the '30's on. There's outfits, jogging outfits, burlesque outfits, you name it, it is here.
I wouldn't in my life ever rent platform shoes, but I got a kick out of looking at them. Elton John style, and both female and male.
I'm certainly not done shopping at Boomerangs. It's location isn't close, but is close to where I do yoga. (That's convenient). Stores like this add spice to my life. -

Ahhh the secret naughty painted lady.
Where is she hiding? Where oh where is she hiding? Why, she's underneath that there vintage tie, my friend! Surprise!
Let's face it. Who doesn't wanna be like that weird, cool guy in Barton Fink (played by John Goodman) with his peekaboo nudie girlie tie. It appears to be just a regular old vintage tie. Flip up the bottom and you'll find your hot tamale! Show her off to only the most deserving. Just please don't get any ideas and go on a murdering spree one day.
And, YES, you can get such a fabulous tie here at Boomerang--up front in the display case by the register!! The K bought one while I innocently was checking out the array of Lucite purses.Listed in: Places in KC to Impress Your…, KC Vintage

Boomerang has a little bit of everything, from fun wigs and costume pieces to the perfect vintage attire and accouterments.
Boomerang is just a great store, full of (and I do mean FULL!) wonderful vintage and vintage inspired pieces. There is also a rental area if you need something fun or outrageous for a party. They offer clothing for both men and women from the 30's to the 80's, and also have housewares and even vintage magazines and catalogs (I almost hate to give that part away as those old catalogs are like bibles to those of us who want a true look into the past and they're hard to come by).
Why 5 stars? Customer Service. The staff at Boomerang have got to be some of the nicest folks in Kansas City. They are always helpful and friendly, whether you purchase something or just browse. And the selection - my goodness - you could spend hours (I speak from experience) perusing all the goodies and treasures this store has tucked into every nook and cranny.
Price: This is a very affordable store as far as vintage shops go. You can find a good petticoat or hat for under $30.
Another thing that I enjoy about Boomerang is that they don't take themselves to seriously - they don't hover or fuss with you, and you're welcome to handle the merchandise as much as your heart desires. This is a place for good ol' fashion fun (see what I did there? Drum roll please).
If you love vintage of any kind, or just want a quick blast from the past, Boomerang on 39th Street is the place to go.Listed in: Retro clothing stores in my…

The guys that run this place are about as nice as they come.
The space is cool, clean and well appointed.
I love the housewares/furniture section and appreciate that they carry both men's and women's apparel.
The downside is that the selection isn't as big as it once was in any department of the store. More focus has been given to the rental portion of the business instead of the retail side of things. Probably good business sense, but not what I'm looking for.
Overall, a great retro/vintage store ran by really nice people. A great place to check out for purchasing or renting something great from decades past.Listed in: "I've been used!!!"

This is a great shop for all of your vintage/retro/funky clothing needs.
My husband and I needed some ideas for a Mardi Gras ball that we are attending, so we figured Boomerang was a good place to start. We weren't sure if we were going to go for a full on costume, or just pick up something funky that we could further embellish, but let me tell you, Boomerang was an inspired choice for our Mardi Gras needs.
Boomerang isn't just for "dress up" clothes, though. There are also plenty of lovely vintage pieces for both men and women. While looking around, I fell in love with a 1940's skirt and jacket (if only I was more petite!!) as well as an old school French smoking jacket and a couple of vintage skirts. Everything is arranged neatly, with eras and sizes marked as appropriate. There are also plenty of accessories - everything from shoes to hats, bow ties, jewelry, and beyond. Again, you could throw together a great costume or a great outfit, depending on your wants and needs. (As other people have noted, there's also a small houseware section, but that wasn't the focus of our particular shopping trip.)
After browsing around for a bit we ended up at the tuxedo jacket portion of the menswear section. There's a bit of everything there, from velvet to the powder blue jacket with tails that would've been at home in "Dumb and Dumber". Most items are in excellent condition, and if there is anything wrong, it's generally noted on the tag.
We ended up going with a couple of tuxedo jackets (with tails) that we're going to funkdafie, and as we were checking out we had a great conversation with one of the guys that runs the place about Mardi Gras - he seemed like a nice guy, and was really friendly and outgoing. The tux jackets were a little bit pricey, but cheaper than buying an entire costume, so I think we got a great deal. Couple that with a fun shopping experience, and what's not to love? -

I was visiting Kansas City for the holidays and found this store while out shopping. They had a great variety of fun vintage clothing from all eras.
They also had a large collection of vintage tshirts. I have been on the hunt to find some good ones at a reasonable price for a while. I am happy to say I left with that day with four. -

There's something for everyone at Boomerang. That's the simplest i can put it.
Boomerang is there to please all your vintage inspired needs. Whether you are a hardcore fan of retro clothing, or just looking for an era-inspired costume, they've got it all for you! The racks are pleasingly well organized by era. (That makes and OCD girl like me melt!) There's also a section of rental clothing, housewares, and records. I have nabbed a few great records there, myself! Definitely worth the time looking!
My very favorite thing that I have found at Boomerang are my vintage black and red Tony Lama's. ONLY $65!! It was love at first site, but I didn't have the money to drop on them. So I went home and when i woke up the next morning after dreaming of them, my want turned into need. Damn the electric bill! Damn groceries! Those babies were coming home with me. So I rushed to Boomerang to make sure I was the first customer... and golly, those babies came home with me.
The moral of this story, is that you should go find your own Boomerang babies to take home with you!! -

Not much else to add, best place in this city to buy a good quality vintage suit. If you have gone to Boomerang one too many times and hate the reruns store because they are way too over priced your only other options are reruns warehouse (Only open for 6 hrs on Saturdays) or my personal second favorite:

I came here to stock up on cardigans as part of my "I'm cooler and better than you" look of Fall '10. They had plenty, and for good prices, and the only problem was in deciding which ones to get. They have a ton of stuff here, and I even picked out the sweet red shades I wore to the greatest play reading in the history of Rockhurst University. Bonus points for the cool stop owners that let me put up a flyer. It's next to where I get my hair cut, and near a lot of cool places in Westport. Start supporting local business and stop giving the CEO of Old Navy so much of your money.

A great little vintage shop on the outskirts of Westport. They mostly carry vintage clothing, but there is also a very small collection of home decor, magazines, furniture, and jewelry. I am especially happy to hunt through the old hankerchiefs.
If you remember this place from the 39th Street days, the housewares section is greatly reduced. -

A great place for vintage stuff and costumes. Best place I've found for ugly Christmas sweaters. They also have a few costumes you can rent.

As a tween, I used to stop here every other day with my best friend's after school. We would try on EVERYTHING from sequined seventies jumpsuits to fifties poodle skirts - any period, any fashion - it's all there.
The dressing rooms are grungy, yes. BUT this is a small price to pay for the selection. The pricing is neither cheap nor excessive but the owners, as quirky as they are, do not like to haggle...so don't try!
Years later, I usually make a stop before every Halloween. The costume ideas here are so endless that its guaranteed your costume will not be easily duplicated as opposed to picking up a cat costume in one of those plastic bags that any one of three people will be wearing at the party that night.
Boomerang's also has a great collection of costume jewelry, and I definitely went through that phase in high school, so I always picked around their sale basket of eighty or so little plastic baggies of clip-on earrings placed on top of the check out counter.
The guys section is also well worth it to look through...I have purchased some great t-shirts and jackets there (which is the mark of a pretty good store, when its clothing is almost unisex in some areas).
If your skeptical still - HALLOWEEN SHOPPING - it's the time to go. -

Great place for vintage clothing, furniture and knick knacks. The guys that run it are so nice. They are attentive when you need them and leave you alone when you don't. I love the clean, modern space that they have filled with all of the vintage goodness. Great place to go for a special event or to add something unique to your everyday life.

I am a vintage junkie and the search for elusive vintage tees will always be a grail quest to me. Boomerang's offerings were sub-par for my particular interest of tees but don't let that bad egg fool you. The shop houses some serious threads from yesteryear with a few great retro housewares as well. I did almost get lost in all the Member's Only jackets but trying on all the shades more than made up for it.

Great vintage in KC. Low prices, as vintage goes. They separate by decade so stuff is easy to find. Also have some great hats, sweaters, under-apparel.

I am not as big of a vintage fan as I used to be...DC has turned me preppy, but if you want vintage this is THE place to go! They have very cheap prices (for vintage), a large selection, and good quality. I went into some vintage stores on Melrose in LA and wow, they has shitty selections of T-shirts for like $100 each. No good. The guys section is as big as if not bigger than the lady's which is rare. Check out the old TIME magazine while you are in there...pretty cool!

Hmm...I'm not sure how to describe Boomerang. Sure, they have vintage clothes easily labeled into their corresponding era's, lots of accessories for girls, a pretty big men's section, and some kickass women's shoes. But if you look closer, you'll notice that some of their stuff is downright new and cheap. Take for instance, their overflowing selection of earrings. I overheard the counter guy say they buy it in bulk from ebay so they have no idea what they get. Well, to me it looked like colored tin on hooks--not very classy and looked just the same. I mean, sure, it might appeal to the college kids in the area, but for someone who loves vintage jewelry like me, it was kind of a slap in the face.
I did make an amazing discovery at Boomerang (so much so I don't want to write it in here, but sharing is giving right?). They sell American Apparel 80's style dresses (the one that looks flattering on every woman I might add) for $14! These are the same ones they sell at AA for $38! (I know, b/c I have this dress in almost every color). That blew me away.
This store is fun if you're not looking for anything in particular, but overwhelming in that same sense too. There were a lot of kids in this store, and sometimes it was hard to get past an aisle (having to give up and go back out the same way you came in). But it was definitely fun to see their collection, which I was told changes every few weeks. -

This store is a blast to go to! Hello Retro! You will have a hay day here! But you do need HOURS of free time to really enjoy the place. There's just so much stuff. Treasure after treasure of cool findings. Fairly priced. And you can tell they are pretty selective with what they allow in the store my girlfriend and I went one time just to try out dresses!! We had a blast from the past. OMG they have clothes, shoes, jewelry even a few furniture and appliances. I love going once in a while, you just never know what you will find!! :) Definitely bring a friend along the first time. Guaranteed fun and laughs!
