Gotta give credit where credit is due. The Zumba classes at Boom are outstanding. You get a great workout and the teachers are great. They play a great mix of latin music and latin pop/hip hop.
They also didn't give my hubby a hard time when he cancelled his membership. The locker rooms are always clean and the staff is really nice.Listed in: All things Beauty!

Review from Linda C.
Manhattan, NY
I've been working out at Boom for just over two months now. It's definitely no Equinox, but how can I complain when I'm paying so little, and saving so much on my monthly gym membership. Financially, I wish I joined sooner!
The overall facility is pretty good. It took a little adjusting to get used to. I spent my first week LOST. There are lots of different levels, and areas. It's a bit of a maze, but once you get used to it, it works. There are lots of cardio machines with TV's on offer to use, and they have good-sized weight areas dedicated to both machine weights and free weights.
The classes are fun. The instructors are 5-star. I'm a raving fan of the spin classes. Just hate the fact that you need to sign-up, but I guess you get that wherever you go.
The general atmosphere of the gym is good. Staff and trainers are professional and friendly. The gym is well-maintained, and the ladies locker room is nice. Considering the influx of people during peak times, the ladies room is always kept clean and tidy. The only downfall is that you can't get clean towels in the ladies locker room. A little annoying, but I'm getting good with remembering to pick one up from the front desk when I check in.
Boom works for me. It's close to my home, its saving me bucket loads of money, and I'm getting results. -

I joined Boom about a month ago and so-far-so-good. With all the fees on top of the monthly fee, it averages to about 50 dollars a month, which is a great deal for Manhattan. The staff is always friendly, the instructors are helpful, and the locker rooms are ALWAYS clean.
I am in love with their classes. Look on their website to see every class they offer. I can already see a difference in my body. Be warned though, the morning classes are filled with older-catty ladies who always complain about the classes being too crowded/so many new people, have to have the same spot every class, and that they don't like the instructor.
All the cardio machines have TVs and since I don't have cable at home, it is a treat to watch "Housewives of Atlanta" while I sweat my butt off. It does get crowded around 6-7 PM during the week.
My one complaint involves their recent groupon deal. There have been an excess amount of people now in the facility, which causes frustration...overcrowded classes and not enough lockers to accommodate everyone. Does management not care about it's members? -

I've done several gyms here and back in San Francisco where I'm from and I have to admit I really love this place. At first I was a little thrown off because of all the levels and different spots. This place is like a maze but once you get the layout it easy to figure out.
The price is reasonable and I've signed up for a few classes. Love the Zumba and the Spin. One thing I wish they had was some Crossfit. It's one of the few things I miss from back home. Workout of Day! Let's get some clean and snatches going people! LoL. Still, it's a great place to get a workout done : ) -

I wish there were towels in the locker rooms, but besides that, I like the gym. I had a personal training session, and the trainer I worked with was very nice. I haven't been in 6 weeks, so I'm hoping that by yelping I will make it to the gym some time this week (maybe tomorrow!).
Sometimes, there's a 5 minute wait for a treadmill, but usually it's the ellipticals that look busy.
Wish me luck! -

Such a good gym! It's a great deal if you are going to be in the area for over a year - really cant beat $29.99/month + join fee + once a year "cost of living" expense. It all averages out to a lot less money than one year at other gyms around here.
I recently left my old gym (Asphalt Green) because of location and I actually like this gym more for a wide variety of reasons...
First, it's 24 hours weekdays (opens at 5am monday and closes at 11pm on friday) and weekend hours are 8-8. Can't beat those hours.
There's enough cardio machines that you generally don't have to wait (I have never waited for a machine, but I've seen people wait for an elliptical... but there were treadmills open). There is a whole area dedicated to machine weights and a whole area dedicated to free weights. And another few small areas. Generally, even at peak evening times (6-7pmish) you can find a machine and start a workout! Later in the evening (8/9ish) there are plenty of machines available.
I don't do classes, but the schedule shows classes every day including yoga, zumba and all that. Studios are located on the top floor.
Locker room is nice, has a steam room and sauna.
Has a juice bar, towel service. Never used the juice bar, but towel service is always appreciated.
There are TVs on most of the cardio machines and a open tv viewing in the front (with bikes).
It might seem a bit more "no frills" than some of the high end Equinoxes and NYSCs in the area, but there's really no reason to complain if you need a place to get an affordable workout in. All people in different athletic situations can find something to do here. Seriously. -

As an update: we moved away and had to cancel our membership. As others have noted it was a PITA to cancel. However, I read the reviews and our contract and knew this going in. However, when I sent in the documentation needed for cancellation they declined my request stating that I had not moved the required 25 miles outside the membership area. When I called I discovered it was because ONE route (as noted by MapQuest) was 24.2 miles in distance. However, with some polite discussion I convinced them to reconsider and was able to cancel my membership.
Again, I loved it when we were there. But please read your contract so you are surprised down the road!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have been going to this no-frills, laid-back gym about 5 or 6 years. It's definitely not for those who like a huge variety of classes, but it has a nice free weights area downstairs, and enough exercise bikes and treadmills most times, although it gets crowded in the evenings.
I usually go at 5:30 in the morning, and it's always wide open. Lots of regulars have been going here for years - my early-bird workout partners. I never work out with the trainers, but they all seem pretty cool, and most of the people who belong here seem to be a friendly, unpretentious crowd. -

I have been going to this gym since July, and I love it!
There is plenty of equipment to be used and plenty of classes to take. I did not realize how many UES residents had taken advantage of Boom's awesome membership rates until Christmas time; they had promotional cards for all of its members. A total a 1100. That number explains the crowds and waits for cardio equipment during peak hours aka after work on Monday - Thursday. Definitely call ahead if you are taking a spin class, because they fill up hours beforehand.
Once you're signed up, enjoy the challenge. And prior to the spin, throw around some weights. Post spin and weights, relax in the sauna for a good steam Have fun and enjoy!Listed in: Home Sweet Home: Upper East…

I joined Boom Fitness in December 2010 when they were having a promotional sale that was too good to pass up. So far, so good at Boom Fitness. I am not exactly Jane Gym, so all I wanted was an affordable gym that is flexible to my schedule. Boom Fitness is certainly affordable and during the weekdays they are open 24hrs., which is great! I feel comfortable at Boom because it is laid back and not everyone looks like they came out of Shape or Men's Health magazines. Another cool thing is that all of their classes are included in the membership and you can't find that at most other gyms. I like the music they play and the women's locker room is always clean. Boom gives frequent promotional offers on personal trainers. I recently purchased a package of 15 sessions. So far, working with my trainer, Omar has been an excellent experience. He is very nice, easy to work with, knowledgeable, and I have to say i am learning a lot.
The only downside to Boom is that it is small and after work hours (6-8pm) is extremely crowded to the point you have to wait for machines. Some people hog the machines too, which is annoying. I also wished they had a pool but you can't get everything in life.
Overall, the pros out weight the cons and I would definitely recommend Boom Fitness to anyone. -

Think twice before becoming a member of this gym.
I lived in the Upper East Side and wanted a gym close to my apartment. I decided to join Boom because they were having a grand opening special. My contract was month to month and after moving from the UES, I decided to cancel my membership. After calling a couple of numbers and talking to many people, I finally got a nice lady and she told me I had to mail a letter to some address in Texas to cancel membership. I did exactly that. This was in January 2009.
Come one month later, I get a bill showing I was 30 days past due. I called back up to talk through what I needed to do to get this resolved quickly. Even if I had to pay that extra month (considered it a transition month), I was happy doing so. The lady told me they didn't receive the letter and that the "general manager" would be calling me...no call at all. I called a couple of days later and was instructed to send another letter. So, I did exactly that.
3 months down the road, after getting no invoice, no letter and no call (logic would tell you everything was taken care of), I get a letter saying i still owed a balance. Long story short, I had multiple phone calls with about 5 different people, I was lied to about 5 different times, nobody knew what they were doing, they all told me information that conflicted with what I was told previously and on and on and on this went.
Quite honestly, one of the worst run gyms I have ever been involved with. Think twice before joining. -
Review from Joanne B.
My boyfriend and I took a tour of this gym one day as I was curious to see what other gym options were near our apartment. Boom Fitness seemed alluring due to it's super close location, supposed "luxurious" facilities plus some flyers I had received in the mail offering a seemingly interesting deal.
The friendly front desk person had us whisked into an office to meet with a supposed manager who immediately came off as being just a personal trainer or something. He was trying to be smooth but it didn't come off right. He didn't really ask us any questions other than wanting to know why we were interested in his gym and why we wanted to know prices right off the bat. (Duh, I don't waste my time. If your prices are legit and in my league then we can chat all day!) He was so hard on wanting to know WHY we were thinking about this gym and canceling my other gym membership, like his brain could not wrap around the concept of a closer gym at a cheaper price. It was weird but maybe he had just juiced up before we met.
Anyway, we get to the tour without him even attempting to qualify our workout needs, interests, etc. And we're craning our necks the whole time because we could hardly hear what he was saying.
The gym looks decent, locker rooms are clean but the workout area is super tight. I couldn't imagine it holding a lot of people on a weekend or prime-time. Not ideal.
On the tour, I asked about the pilates equipment, classes, costs and if it were possible to use the reformer on my own when class was not on. He bit my head off and was like, "NO WAY, have you even taken pilates before? You need to know how to use it the right way! That's really expensive equipment!" (Oooh, sorry. If you even bothered to ask, I think I have the basics down after 5 plus years of personal reformer & cadillac sessions. I'm not going to break your stupid machine!!) I understand that he has to say no but the way he answered me was super condescending and rude, like he was talking to a child or an idiot. I mean, we're supposedly going to be potential new clients. Huh??
At another point in the tour we get into the heavier weight machine section where you'd have a Smith or heavier plate machines. (I forget the brand they had in there.) I made some sort of comment of, ok, you have that because I like to use it. He was incredulous and in yet another macho, condescending tone was like "Oh, you know about this stuff?"
Had the jerk been a real manager, hired because of brains and customer service ability, he would have qualified us and learned that despite my blonde, slim physique hidden under a winter jacket that I am an athletic person, in shape, who cross trains and participates in a variety of sports, even had a brief interest in becoming a personal trainer years ago and YES knows what the hell he's talking about!
Getting back to his office, I am steaming, he wrote down the membership rate (as advertised) and said "This is price and that's all there is to it. And this price is only good until the end of the day."
Typical douche. I'd never drop a dime to go there, wouldn't even go back there for free and workout with such a macho, sexist pig hanging around. The place is entirely overrated.
And by the way, they are still advertising that same price. -

My first experience with Boom Fitness was in January. I used the gym but first was taken on a tour. Although my condo has a fitness room, well fitness rooms aren't gyms. The equipment is fantastic. I can't remember seeing so much equipment. There is plenty of room to move around which is always nice. There are plenty of free weights of all kinds including bars. There are enough benches for everyone. I never had to wait for a machine I wanted. There is a juice bar which is always nice after a good workout. There are bar stools and a television. This gym is really one I could spend the entire day at! I enjoyed all the classes I took. I found the instructors to be friendly. Some of the offerings I took include Pilates, Spinning, Kickboxing and Yoga. The location is convenient. I would definitely recommend Boom Fitness.

I didn't renew my membership this year due to a few reasons:
Like all gyms, they promise you the world and up play everything. ie) we have a steam room that is in repairs right now, but will be fixed very soon..THAT STEAM ROOM HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR OVER A YEAR NOW!
they said i would have no problem getting guest passes for 1-2 weeks if a family member or friend was in town and wanted to work out. THEY GAVE ME ONLY 1 GUEST PASS FOR ONLY 1 DAY..they give u such a hard time to get more than 1 day pass. the ppl at the counter don't look up and say hi..they stare at their computer monitors the entire time. The classes are limited during the summer.
However, the place is clean, way better than bally's, membership is kinda cheap, the manager is nice and not pushy at all.
My ass is growing by the minute, but i'm going to look elsewhere to workout. -

If its convenient for you and you just want a clean relatively cheap gym, then check it out. But remember, you get what you pay for.
I belonged many moons ago when it was Synergy. I left for all the complaints voiced on these reviews. Tried just about every major gym around at every price point. And when Synergy became Boom and they renovated into their supposed "spa" amenities decor I gave them another try. Well to quote a recent political quip, "You can slap lipstick on a pig but its still a pig."
Like every gym they over promise and under deliver. There are few classes and have never added any more. There are enough out of order machines to disrupt your workouts. The steam room is an ongoing joke, I don't think it's ever worked. They didn't give any guest passes with my membership. And when it was time to renew they keep calling me to offer "special renewal terms" and would then offer the same deal that's plastered all over the walls for anyone who walks in off the street. But more annoying is the "special renewal rate" was 18% more than my prior rate!!! -

So I get those coupons in the mail and I happen to quickly browse through and see this newly opened gym near me called Boom. I decided to go check it out and I am impressed. I join.
It is very clean, not over-crowed, good hours, free weights, machines, cardio, good class offerings - yoga, pilates, spin and urban bounce all for a decent value for the money.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Boom markets itself as 'New York's Other Luxury Gym.' Putting aside that there are many different kinds of luxury gyms in Manhattan and the obvious reference to Equinox, I have to say that I was less than impressed with this location.
To start, the weights area is so neat and clean as to make obvious the small selection of equipment. Some of the clients also feel no need to put a towel between themselves and the benches. And there is little space to manoeuvre in this place; it is a space simply not large enough to contain a comfortable and well-stocked gym.
Boom has another location closer to my office with much more space and a wider array of equipment and I almost considered joining. Still, in addition to a wide variety of equipment, I require that my gym have more than two locations; I like being able to pop into a class downtown and then head to see friends without having to schlep all the way back to the Upper East Side.
Boom may yet survive and grow-- I hope it does; my boyfriend loves their Pilates classes -- but for the time being I'd recommend either splashing out for a proper luxury gym membership at Equinox or joining a regular gym like NYSC and using one of the nicer, and more kitted out, locations. -

If you are on the UES and you are without a gym membership, what are you still reading for??? Get to Boom right now and sign up!
Membership is $59 a month as long as you commit for a year. The gym is always next to empty, except early morning and after work. Very clean locker rooms, up to date equipment, and lots of classes to choose from. The only downside is that the manager is a Giants fan (Here we go Steelers, Here we go!) -

An avid gym goer, I've always belonged to some communal workout center since I was 16 and I've belonged to the gamut... The place that has the 'women's only' gym and I'd find nasty old men curlin' iron to the equinoxes with bells and whistles and women in their 60's that would put most strapping youngins to shame with their hot bods.
So after skipping around from gym to gym each year, I happened to be walking past "BOOM" the other week while I was sans membership. So we go for a tour (husband in tow)
Nice elliptical machines? Check
Plentiful treadmills? Check
variety of free weights and machinery? Check
Decent locker room? Check
Classes? Check
and this is the kicker, a sweet $59 a month fee(with $99 down and a year commitment) WE'RE in
So what am I missing? well, Im not getting the ultraviolet-purified multi million dollar over crowded swimming pool like Asphalt Green, the SUPER overcrowded and competitive yoga classes at Equinox, but definitely much cleaner and up to date equipment that NYHRC and most importantly, that price tag and the fact that it's near empty most of the day.
So, yes, I'd give you the five stars, but the view is just mirrors but who needs that when you've got Cable tv on each machine? :) -

I was referred to Boom Fitness by a friend of mine that I went to school with. I was looking for a place to lift weights, run on the tredmil and take an occational spin or yoga class. I found that the rates were lower than I expected and everything is included. Reilly was the guy that signed me up and he was very helpful and thorough with everything.
If anything, stop by and check it out. I will probably see you there! -

Wow, my experience over the last five or so months is very different to many of those below. I joined in March when I was beginning a weight loss journey and wanted a convenient and affordable gym. I'd seen the ads in ValuPak and in my mail box and decided to stop in. Sure, you get the tour and the hard sell that you get in any gym, but I've been happy.
The staff is friendly without exception and the trainers are happy to answer questions when they're not with a client. I've never had an issue getting a machine or weights when I come in, and I love that they're now 24 hours during the week. Perfect for hot nights when you can't sleep. Steam room in the women's locker room has been working except for one day since I've been a member.
I don't take classes so I can't speak to that aspect.
Price point $59.99 when I signed up is fine with me, much more affordable than others in the area which is important in this economy. I'm happy and will likely renew if I'm still in the area -

went to Boom for one just to try it, although the gym is quite small, I'd say it's ok, especially considering how cheap it is. tried one class which was busy but fun.
Locker rooms are very nice and clean, everything's new. the gym itself is a bit cramped/tight, so if you like open space, this might not be for you but if you're looking for a cheap yet clean gym with friendly staff, give it a try - it's not Equinox but it does't claim to be and costs around a sixth of it. -

I had 2 other memberships with 2 other gyms and have not found a difference between Boom and the other clubs except for the cleanliness is better. I am paying 1/2 the price of the other clubs and getting the same equipment and classes.
The front desk is very personable and the manager Jason is always friendly and helpful. The classes are very motivating, keeping you on your target goal.
I recomend giving them a try. -

very good for a cheap gym. my negative review is because they never fix anything. if it breaks it may be broken forever. no matter how often you complain about something they won't do anything about it and pretend each time that this is the first time they have heard about the broken tv. Also, when I signed up the manager told me I would get a month free for signing up a friend. I signed up a friend and he kept telling me the month free would be the following month but I kept getting charged. Later on this manager was fired and I was told by a subsequent employee that this manager lied to people and they would not honor anything he said.
again, good for a cheap gym. not too crowded, never a long wait for a treadmill. in general a pretty good deal. -

Hey Yelpers, while I consider myself a Yoga Person and generally go to Yoga Studios, I decided to expand my horizon and try some other things. I joined Boom Fitness on the Upper East Side and have been quite happy with my experience. The gym is really clean, the equipment is new and the trainers are nice and helpful. An added benefit is that the Yoga is actually pretty good and this is coming from a "Yoga Snob" The gym has a neighborhood feel and while I wish it had a location closer to my job, I'm kind of glad its not a chain because the last club I belonged to was and it was sort of cold. One well kept secret is the locker rooms, an excellent steamroom, but keep it quiet, its clean and uncrowded!! Namaste!!

I've been a member of the Upper East Side branch of Boom for over a year and overall have been quite satisfied. The facility is fairly small and it can get crowded during peak hours, but the price is reasonable and there is a good selection of equipment. I recently moved out of the city, but continue to make the trek up to the UES to Boom after work due to the outstanding experience I've had working with my personal trainer Omar Harrison. As a novice to fitness who was previously intimidated by the idea of working with a trainer, I can't praise Omar enough. He is professional, knowledgeable, friendly and encouraging. He does a great job of planning sessions that are varied and effective. In addition to the personal training, I've taken advantage of a few of the spin classes and found them to be quite good as well. While Boom is no longer the most convenient gym for me to attend, it's still worth my while to continue membership due to the decent price and quality of the personal training. If you live in the UES and are exploring gyms, definitely give Boom a try.

I just wanted to add an update to say that It was fairly easy to cancel my membership. I was told up front that it required 30 days notice, so I put on my calendar 30 days before my annual. Then I mailed a letter to the address that was on my gym contract, and just to test I called the front desk to ask who I was to contact (they gave the number for ABC Financial - in Texas). My gym membership was ended on time without any problem.

I've been a member for 8 years, since it was "Synergy". It is much better than it was in those days, though not without its issues. The women's locker room was beautifully renovated and is, as is the rest of the gym, well maintained (unlike the old days where machines stayed broken for months). The entire gym is very clean. I generally go on weekdays about 10 am and of course at that time it's very empty, and on weekends about 11 am and it's rare that I wait more than 10 minutes for an elliptical. From talking to friends in the neighborhood, it's less crowded at peak hours than other gyms.
The staff is inconsistent and in general not the most helpful. Chris, who seems to be the most senior manager, is pretty responsive. Jason is a little twerp who wants nothing to do with customers. The front-desk staff has turned over quite often and mostly pretty chilly - their training program seems to involve only pointing to the manager's offices to deflect concerns. My favorite staff members are the cleaning crew who are always busy, omnipresent, friendly, and interestingly, have been around longer than the rest, most notably Reuben, a great guy and longtime employee. Overall, I'm happy at Boom. -

I do not agree with the majority of the reviewers - this facility is what it is - a quite reasonable venue with a nice facility and exercise equipment for all purposes - not flashy - not new - not a gaggle of pretty empty heads looking in the mirror - rather for the most part a place where, for a quite reasonable sixty bucks a month, you can have a fine workout. Where's the problem?
