Bargain prices, superb large selection, very helpful knowledgeable staff, warm appealing space, good location (bakery, butcher across the street, several good restaurants within a few blocks, even an above average Starbucks!!!).
They also host a great poetry reading Third Fridays of the Month (except July) and sometimes host special author readings too.
They have a great children's section.
What's not to like? Well, there's no guarantee they'll stay in business unless you buy some books there. Independent bookstores are having a very tough time staying in business.
Go, enjoy, buy something. -

Fantastic children's and young adult selection - total score for a teacher! I stocked up on a ton of books for my classroom and for my daughter for about $35. Service is extremely helpful and patient, especially considering that I spent over an hour taking books off of shelves and making new piles on the floor.

I'm not really a used book girl. Okay, I am, but that comes later.
I am a girl who reads about a book in the NYT book review, or other less high-falootin' places, and must go out and get that book RIGHT NOW.
That leads to a lot of books in piles around my house.
My goal is to not end up a crazy cat lady with a trail from my fridge to my bed through piles of newspapers, old pizza boxes, Martha Stewart Magazines and books. I know: dare to dream.
But the Book Worm Exchange buys my books back from me! And gives me store credit so I can BUY MORE BOOKS. Oh yes, I know, it's a vicious cycle.
I console myself by the fact that my piles of books are new (to me) and I know where to take them when I'm done. -

I head down to dine at the various Columbia City eateries often, usually solo. That is, unless you count my dog, Carson, who gets to accompany me on occasion. However, since he has to remain outside chained up, barking, and terrified that I will never return, I don't.
Usually I grab a newspaper to keep me company. Occasionally it hits me that there's a used book store right in the neighborhood where I can grab a novel for about 4x the cost of a paper.
The Bookworm Exchange has racks of books, a couch to relax on, and a kid's area where it looks like you could take your mini-you to read to. I've never seen anyone there making use of it, but it looks that way.
I'm a sci-fi/fiction fan, so I always go and check to see if there are any Asimov, Heinlein, or King novels I haven't read yet. If not, I scan around looking for anything else that might interest me. For a couple of dollars, I can grab a novel that will entertain me through many-a-meal. I just picked up a Tom Robbins hard back in almost perfect condition for just a few bucks.
The folks who work here have always been friendly and helpful. I got a bit confused on where to find a half comedy/half sci fi series at one point, as I didn't see it in the sci fi section. The gal behind the counter spent about 10 minutes with me searching around. They just didn't have any in stock that day, but I appreciated the help. (And my next visit in, I found a book by that author. In sci-fi. Now I know.)Listed in: Columbia City

This is one of my favorite bookstores in Seattle. Here, you can find some of the newest books to hit the streets at the same time you are browsing the extensive shelves of used books. Sometimes they even have new books below retail price! The used book selection is impressive and well organized, and they are constantly buying and selling books, so it's always worth ducking in to see if there's something new in stock.
Life seems to slow down once you enter the store. The folks who work here are helpful if there's anything you need, but there's no pressure to find what you're looking for and move along. In fact, they really give the impression that you're welcome to stay as long as you like. As you wander the aisles, comfy antique chairs are hiding around the corner inviting you to settle in and stay awhile enjoying your new reading material. The couch in the children's reading area is so deep it might actually be an effort for the little ones to climb out! There's even a little table with a chess board by the window to further encourage you to spend some time here even if you're not reading.
So, go. Peruse the books. Sit in chairs. Play some chess. Enjoy an inviting local bookstore that welcomes you like a neighbor.Listed in: That Other City

They have an abundance of books for people of all ages and with all kinds of interests. The person working seems to almost always be the only one inside, so it's usually very..... quiet and peaceful?
I'm quite sure I remember some old children's books that were locked away because of their age and possibly value, but you could see them through the glass. Super cool.'
I loved having a great used bookstore so close to home!Listed in: Columbia City, Seattle Reading on the Cheap!

I just had a great phone experience with the woman who was working there this afternoon. I was looking for a specific book. She said she go check for me and she did! And they had it!
She was super nice and helpful. Makes me want to give them more business.
I had been in one time when they first opened up and had a kinda "cold" experience. I think I didn't like their exchange policy.
However, tonight I LOVED that they had the book I wanted.
If ya need a book and you are in columbia city, check 'em out! -

In an era where used bookstores are going out of business at an alarming rate, I hold my breath every time I visit this bookstore in the hopes that it is still there. Like a faithful friend it always is, its shelves overstuffed with amazingly priced books for all ages and interests and the staff always happy to help. If you love used bookstores as much as I do, it's well worth it to give the Bookworm your business to ensure that it's still around in the years to come.
