I've been to a lot of bookstores in my time and The Bookery has to be one of the most amazing book shops I've ever seen! Sure you can pick up many of the latest best sellers there, but the real treat is finding books by authors that most other shops have forgotten or passed by. Check out the "Classics" section and "Oldies-But-Goodies" to see what I'm talking about. And while finds like these are priceless to me, The Bookery's prices very reasonable!

Wonderful books, knowledgeable and friendly people - if you love books you have to stop in at The Bookery!

The Bookery is easily one of my favorite bookstores. I have never seen four small rooms so filled with books! The winding bookcases reach from the ceiling to the floor all of which are so full that a neat stack of books sits at the foot of each bookcase. All used books are half price, and if that's not cheap enough there are two carts full of books on sale at the entrance.

Don't be afraid of their mascot a rather large dog who sleeps near the entrance, he is older and very mellow, although no help when it comes to finding a good book. If your looking for a specific title just ask the friendly staff, they all seem to know off hand not only what they have, but precisely where it is.

If you wish to sell some of your old books, they do purchase weekdays by appointment.

The Bookery is a great place!

I hate paying the high prices for a new book, that I'll only ready once... So, knowing that I'll more than likely fine the same book at the Bookery, gently used and more affordable, is great.

The gals in there are extremely helpful. Fun to just sit on the floor & look through the books...

Enjoy seeing the kitty cat perched up in front, too. :)

Wow. What a shop! Just when you think you've seen all the books, there is a hidden room off to the side with even MORE books. Love the mascot dog that watches the front too.

Honestly, after seeing this place, why pay full retail for new? There is every category of book you can think of and then some. I did find the book I was looking for and then realized that it was quite a tome and I have a stack of books that I still haven't read.

I didn't have too much time to browse, but I could easily spend many an afternoon here. I just love the way books absorb sound. It was so quiet and peaceful hanging out the back.

In the kids section, some of the books did not have the price written in the cover. I wasn't sure if this meant that it was a new book or what. In any case, the staff was very attentive and helpful.

    Sweet, sweet childhood memories.

Whenever I was good kid (A's on the report card, no whipping up pickle-sugar cookies with my cousin and forcing my sister to eat them, restraining myself from throwing rocks at the neighbor boy's head, etc) I would get to go here as a reward. I can't tell you how many hours I spent as a girl in that back room, perusing the Babysitter's Club, Little House on the Prairie, and Sweet Valley selections. I still remember the excitement that would well up in me when my dad or my grandmother would take me downtown and tell me I could pick out whatever book I wanted. And the owner used to have this adorable dog. And sometimes we would get ice cream later. Sigh. I'm smiling just thinking about it.

They also have amazing history and adult fiction sections. I still like to randomly stop by and nerd out when I'm up the hill. Go take a gander (you know, if you find yourself on the way to Tahoe or antiquing or something.) That place is WAY bigger than it looks outside and just when you think you've discovered all the books, there are MORE!!  If you're a voracious reader you'll probably end up spending an entire afternoon there.

If you could have taken a peek into the depths of my 7year old soul, this would have been my ultimate playhouse. I absolutely love the twists and turns of the ceiling high maze-like book shelves, and every time I come in here my inner child grabs my hand and leads me through them.

I am a huge fan of classic novels (Dickens, sisters Bronte, Austen, Hemingway, et. al.) and I love browsing through this particular section to see the different printings available for these novels. I think there is something so much more magical about buying a used copy and knowing that you've shared the experience of turning those same pages with a stranger vs. picking up a generic paperback print at big box book store. That's not to say I really have something against large chain bookstores, but I when I'm look for a copy of a book that I want to keep and display on my bookshelf, I go here to find a unique copy that I will treasure. For example, I found the most beautifully quaint copy of Jane Eyre here one time. It is smaller than your standard paperback, the front has a white background with a pale green geometric flower print all over it and it has a small, silky little bookmark  attached in the binding. Would you find that at the big box store (for under 5 bucks, mind you)? I think not. They also have some quality, leather bound sets I wish I could pick up.

If you are a bibliophile like myself, treat yourself and come in here. If you are just looking for something random, some DIY help, crafts, cookbooks, etc. support a local small  business and save yourself some half of the cost of buying a new copy and come in here. Just allow yourself a little time to get lost in The Bookery's spell.

A great used book store in Old Placerville, on Main Street.  They have 30,000 used books, all sold at 1/2 price.  Books are neatly arranged by category and even though the store isn't large, you don't fee crowded.  The staff are friendly but let customers browse as long as they like.  Some new books and some ibrary books, but most are used.  Every book I looked at was in great condition.

I LOVE THIS STORE!!!  Everytime I take a trip up to Placerville, the highlight of my trip is going to this bookstore.  It has an AMAZING selection of used books that are in excellent condition and for a low price!  I've found some very old editions of books that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere (and I think I spent a max. of $20 on each one).  The people who work there are very friendly and helpful, too.  I wish I could rate this store 10 stars because it really deserves it!

This is an awesome used book store. They have a huge selection and everything is well organized. I stop in at this bookstore every time I'm in Placerville whether I'm looking for a specific title or browsing a category.
