If you haven't tried the Bookend Cafe yet you are missing another one of the little treasures in Phoenixville. Chef Dan was kind enough to open up on a Sunday for my Daughter's Communion party. He made a variety of Pannini sandwiches, wraps, chicken fingers (requested by my son), fruit salad and MEATBALLS! Our family is 100 % Italian and the Grand-moms & Great Grand-moms are still raving about the meatballs. Dan was also kind enough to procure a special cake for the occasion from a local baker.
The Bookend feels like you are having a meal at an old friend's house. There is a family atmosphere and many of Dan's clients know each other and engage in conversation as they enjoy their plates of "awesomeness" . So support the local economy and stop by to see what Chef Dan has cooked up!!!! -

Back at the bookend this morning. Today I ordered the Eggs Benedict platter. I'm not usually into eggs benedict, but The Bookend does them with a twist. The eggs are grilled, not poached. A purist would perhaps balk. I am no purist and so I ate. Am eating still. Very nice. One minor quibble this morning, however. When I got here both coffee pots were kicked! You do NOT want to get between me and my fix, just sayin'.
Nicely done, Bookend. You earned your stars once again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

My co-workers and I went here for lunch. It's a neat little place. The atmosphere is very light. Essentially an upscale sandwich joint masquerading as a coffee/book shop.
The sandwiches are more exotic than your average sandwich/hoagie shop. Example; I got a sandwich of turkey and roasted portobello mushroom with Muenster cheese and an olive spread on grilled Focaccia bread.
We all enjoyed our sandwiches but several of us were in agreement that they were a bit light on the meat. There are no sides served with the sandwiches but you can get a small ramekin of things like potato salad or macaroni salad for $1.
Nice homey atmosphere, friendly service, good food and the prices are fair for the quality of what you're getting. -

Solid breakfast/lunch spot with very good prices and a slightly different take on your traditional menu items.
I have visited several times--weekdays, weekends, early AM, lunch. I have dined in-house the majority of my visits. The place is small, quaint and the shelves are lined with--you guessed it--books.
I really enjoy the pepper and egg sandwich; scrambled eggs on a hoagie roll with sweet green and red peppers, topped with American cheese. The scrapple is cooked on the griddle (which I prefer) rather than deep-fried (a no-no in my book!).
Two minor drawbacks: closed on Sundays (ok, ok, they *do* need a day of rest), and the place can fill up quickly at lunch time, leaving you with take out as the option. But these two drawbacks do not take away from how good this place is. -

Been here for breakfast a few times and once for lunch. The homely feel and family service are great. The food...its OK but certainly not the star.
They have a couple shelves of books, which patrons can borrow for free, but need to return, thus ensuring a repeat visit.Listed in: Breakfast Places in…

Just went there for lunch again, and had another special -- this one was chorizo and "chunky chili sauce" with jack cheese on a long roll ($5.50). Amazing. Very messy, spicy, hearty, and filling. This dude definitely knows what he's doing when it comes to sandwiches. Check it out and support the guy. Also, I sat there talking to a friend for several hours over a cup of coffee, and it didn't seem to bother anyone. My one and only complaint so far is: I hope they switch to homemade lemonade sometime instead of the mix they were selling today.

OMG, Dan does the best job with his food. He's had a ton of experience in "traditional" restaurants and, thankfully, decided to open up a spot right down the way in Phoenixville. They close early (3:00) but it's really just a breakfast/lunch spot anyway.

What a great little place. Another one of our local favorites to zip off to and grab a great quality breakfast. I like the fact that its self serve for the coffee. You almost get the feeling you're at a friends house for the weekend as you pour your own brew and then sit at the antique oak tables that are surrounded by books, books and more books. Prices are excellent, service is good and the food is homemade quality since there are so few tables. In fact that is the only down side is the limited seating so I tend to get a little upset when there are no tables because everyone is sitting in "MY" seats. Damn people!

James and I were looking for a good place to grab breakfast while visiting PA. We were extremely pleased to find Bookend Cafe in Phoenixville. The owner, chef, and server was extremely friendly and made us feel right at home in the one room cafe. I had Old fashion, home made oatmeal with raising and brown suger, which was refreshing from the instant oatmeal I had been eating at the West Chester Diner. James got the pancakes which could not have been more perfectly done. Thick, soft, caramelized on the edges, and served with warm maple syrup. Also at bookend, there is a wall of hundreds of books stacked together and you are welcome to bring your book you finished and trade it out for another. I would definitely recommend this to friends, and would love to go back next time I am in PA.

I adore this place. It is in walking distance from my home and it is the best place to settle down and eat, read or surf the web. The food is good, like you make at home, and the simple seating never makes it over crowded. I would love it more if it were a used book store where you can buy or sell books to the cafe. For now though I enjoy the library use of it.
