The staff at BCV are the best. Not snooty, but knowledgable and down to earth.

The rundown - 5 tastings for $5 - can be applied to a wine purchase if you so desire:

1- Chard was not my style, but I wont knock them for that. They seem to be subscribing to the non-malolactic model...typical, uneventful representation for the style.
2- 2009 Cab Franc was a little fragmented & "young". I did not get the impression that it would settle down quickly enough to sustain an overall quality. Initial taste is on the right track but it falls apart by the finish.
3- Ensemble was novel - would have a glass with food, but not buy a bottle.
4- Black Muscat - lacking full body, fruitiness expected with a black. Acidic, high vapor/hot and not very sweet.
5- there was a #5 but the Mr and I cannot recall what it was...even after trying to jog our memories using the website.
    - Muscat Blanc - a "complimentary offering" before we left - their most recent release, yet to be labeled - quite good. Smoothest wine I had tasted of the bunch.

We were originally tasting 10 but we seemed to be ignored, the sommelier opting to serve the 3 other couples, passing us up often - so we closed out at 5 and left.

Perhaps some of the other wines would show better, but I would not return or revisit a bottle based on what I tasted.

On a trip back from Estes Park this weekend I was inspired to check out a few Colorado Wineries.  I followed my GPS to the address for BookCliff Vineyards.  It is in a non-descript strip mall for lack of better terms.  Don't let the location fool you.  You walk in to a pleasant tasting room with a nice view of the fermenting tanks for a  back drop.  Ulla one of the owners was working the tasting room.   She was so pleasant and accommodating.  My bf and I were the only ones there at the time and she took us in back and gave a tour of their tanks, etc.  The wines are delicious.  I am not a huge fan of reds but they have a delicious light red called Friday's Folly which is a  blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah.  It the perfect wine for me as I start trying more adventurous reds.  Also a lot of Colorado wineries purchase their grapes from BookCliff.  Their vineyards are located in Palisade but their is no tasting room there.  All in all it was a thoroughly pleasant experience.  Ulla even directed us to a great eatery in downtown Boulder.

Here's a piece of trivia for you: BookCliff is one of the few places you can actually purchase alcohol on a Sunday in the great state of Colorado. :) This is because they make their own wine. (And it's tasty wine, too.)

The vineyard itself is actually in Palisade, CO, but the tasting room is right downtown on Pearl Street. They make (like every other vineyard) cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and merlot...and those are all pretty good. But what makes BookCliff stand out in my mind are their dessert wines.

Their Adagio dessert wine is made from black muscat and smells amazing. It's sweet without being overly so and it's perfect paired with any sort of rich, creamy dessert. Mmm.

Be sure to visit BookCliff often, their wine selection changes from time to time based on what they're bottling this year.

(-1) star for: ...I'm not really sure...but I reserve 5 stars for places that have that "something extra" and while BookCliff is great (and I highly recommend it), it doesn't quite reach my 5 star level. :)

BookCliff is my most recent discovery on my Colorado wine journey. The tasting room moved from Pearl Street about a year and a half ago to a new location a bit out of town but toward Boulder Creek Winery if you wanted to hit up both. Augustina's is also nearby. My mom, brother, husband and I had the tasting room to ourselves and had an awesome afternoon. The tasting fee is $4 for 5 wines and can be refunded with the purchase of three bottles. Since we purchased a few, we paid just $12 for us all to taste (ie you don't get all the tasting fees refunded). Typically I see the fee refunded with just one bottle purchased, not three, however I got over this quickly when I realized I liked many of their wines and quite a few were the most affordable I've seen in Colorado.

Most notable is their Tempranillo because you won't find that anywhere else in the state. I also learned that many of the other Colorado wineries like Balistreri, Bonacquisti and Boulder Creek purchase their grapes from the BookCliff vineyard in Palisade. I liked their cabernet franc and viognier while everyone in our group loved the muscat...not something any of us would normally go for. My favorites though were the white and red blends: red called Friday's Folly at only $10.99 and the white called Lucky Twenty at $9.99. Friday's Folly is a smooth but bright blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah...a perfect easy-drinking table wine for burgers and pizzas. I have no trouble finding more expensive wines to love but at this price I was excited. Lucky Twenty is a blend of the viognier, chardonnay and muscat. It's a tad sweeter than a typical white table wine but our pourer Ulla compared it to Conundrum and Evolution which are easy to find but more expensive. Seemed like a perfect hot summer night wine so we snatched up some bottles. Tiny but cute operation, and really worth a visit.

Specialties

We produce a variety of wines, from robust reds to full-bodied whites and rich dessert wines. 100% Colorado grown grapes from our vineyards in Palisade, all carefully crafted and aged in oak barrels with loving care at our winery in Boulder.

History

Established in 1999

In 1995 we bought ten acres of peach orchard, six of which we converted into vineyard in the spring of 1996 planting three acres of Chardonnay, 1.5 acres of Merlot, 1.5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon and one row of Black Muscat.

Over the years we purchased additional acreage owning and leasing 26 acres all located in the Vinelands region. By now we have planted more than ten different grape varieties including Tempranillo, Malbec and Petite Sirah.

In 1999 we opened the doors of our winery after we received federal approval to license the basement of our house as a winery. We started small, bottling, corking and labeling each bottled by hand with the help of friends. In the meantime our production is reaching 3,000 cases and in 2008 we moved the winery into a commercial, leased space where you can visit the tasting room and tour the winery.
