Review from Lauren E.
Mid-Cambridge, MA
Another successful trip to Book Haven today. I finally tried the trick of shipping my books home to Massachusetts. They were able to ship my rather substantial stack of books to our house for $8, and not charge me tax, since they were shipping out-of-state. In the end, I look at that as them charging me only about $4 to ship my books, and save me some suitcase space. Good deal!
Their book selection has remained impressive. Still a huge Children's section, great (and actually interesting!) history section, classic literature, foreign language, travel, cooking, etc. Medical/health section remains non-existent, as far as I can tell. But you can get your fix of pretty much anything else.
I love that the guys here are so nice!
Bathroom is still available for customer use. I heard a guy joking that the bathroom was nicer than his own at home, and I kind of agree with that!
I hope this place remains open in downtown for years and years to come.Listed in: Monterey Fave's, Some of my Favorite Used…

I love my Kindle dearly, but if I had to guess what the remaining bookstores will look like in the future, this would be my best guess. All of the books here were either ones I remembered and knew to be great, or books I haven't read, but that looked like they too just had to be great. This is the sort of bookstore you can wander around in until you find a book that you haven't even thought about in 25 years but know that you need to own again, right now. And at about $20 for 4 books, you know you'll be back again soon.

This is a well-organized used bookstore with an impressive selection. Going inside is like stepping into a time machine: you are transported to a past where people cherished books and reading, where books were important conveyors of ideas and culture.
With the demise of Borders, we can only hope that local, independent bookstores like this will see an upsurge in business.

The husband and I always make sure we make a stop here when we're in town. Lots of books to choose from and the people are friendly too. We always end up spending hours here and leaving with great books to take home!

This is one of the best used book stores that I have ever visited in California. They have an amazing art/photo book section that goes so far beyond the picked over stuff and popular artists that you'd usually see in used bookstores. It was a little weak on really contemporary stuff, but so is Monterey in general, so I wasn't particularly surprised.
The history section is overwhelmingly awesome, too.
And the prices are pretty good -- I was finding books that I'd never seen in a brick & mortar store priced reasonably ($25 or less) left and right. Awesome! -

Excellent old-school used bookstore. Great selection, mostly well organized. The only flaw, organizationally, is that the sizable art book selection is only partly alphabetized, with probably half of the art books piled on tables or behind the counter. That would be fine if the stock were listed in a database, so that the staff could look up whether a particular topic, author, or particular book is represented. In any case, I bought at least six books and probably would have bought twice as many if my friend hadn't dragged me away after an hour.

I walked down to Book Haven this morning to finish off some Christmas shopping. I was very impressed upon entering the store. It's an old fashioned book shop. Nice and quiet inside, classical music, and you can pretty much have the place to yourself. The selection at Book Haven is excellent. I found some great books today, but I won't give the titles out just in case the folks are monitoring Yelp. Prices can range from moderate to a little pricey on some of the rarer books. Since Books N' Things closed on Lighthouse Ave, I've been on the search for a good local bookstore. This is definitely it, and beats Borders to a pulp. I went into Borders the other day, and everything was marked up sky high. Book Haven definitely was more in my budget. I will be back to browse a lot more in Book Haven's photography and history sections next time. :D

An excellent little used book shop. The fiction section is a bit weak, but more than made up for by an amazingly large history section. A nice way to spend an hour or two when in Monterey.

A little book store with new and used items. It is a rare mixture of being packed, well-stocked, and well-organized. There is a special bookcase dedicated to Steinbeck--with books by him that I had never heard of or seen at the library--and a section dedicated to local history.

Remember the time (aka The Good Old Days) when you could spend hours in a used book store? Now it's hard to even find a used book store. Most have fallen victim to the dreaded Internet. That's what makes Book Haven such a special place. Well organized, friendly service, with lots of local Monterey area titles...you never know what treasure you'll find! Support these guys before the value of a local used book store becomes extinct...
