Review from Mariel F.
Alameda, CA
My usual order here is the Lox on a Jalapeno Cheese Bagel and I get the Zico (Lima Citron / Chocolate / Regular) Coconut Water.
So Good!
Boogie Woogie Bagel Boy is my go to bagel shop in Alameda. -

Only my mother is Jewish. So, maybe I'm only half right about this!
Twice I have gotten bagels here and both times they were undercooked. Way too doughy, not golden and firm on the outside.
Go up the street. Better bagels there. -
Review from Victor G.
neither Boogie Woogie nor bagel boy was in when i dined. Only an elderly korean couple makiing sammies out of bagels. there's combos as well or just bagels ala carte.
decor: none
eats: b.l.t. bagel (poppyseed, 4.25)
-it had prefried bacon strips, lots of lettuce, a few tomatoes and the usual condiments. bun was toasted. but this BLT didn't taste the same as a regular BLT.
maybe it can't be done or the boogie woogie here wasn't boogieing.
bagel bits:
-nice friendly, accompanying people
-maybe just the panache coffee next time.Listed in: alameda…, sammies that aren't italian

Got some fresh bagels here for a Sukkot breakfast and got lots of compliments on the quality.
Service is efficient and friendly. Would be four stars with a nicer interior where someone would want to linger but it was functional and clean when I was there. -

I would blow my wad on this bagel.
My carb wad. With all the bagels and all the fixings, you could easily have a different bagel everyday.
My girl loves the veggie and I usually go for the LOX. The toppings are all fresh and proper and the bagels speak for themselves.
Too top it off the owners are really nice and I have no problems giving them a 4.5 rating for my favorite lil bagel shop. -

When your on the go, whats better than a bagel and juice?
The bagels here are delicious. I always thought all bagels tasted the same. I definitely changed my mind after having a bagel here. Nice and crusty on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. My personal favorite would be the asiago bagel with herb cream cheese, smoked salmon and a few slices of avocado. Yum! -

Excellent bagels and don't miss the croissant rolls. Wish it were a better place to eat in though. Could be better taken care of and cleaner. Also not a fan of the microwave. Stick to the baked goods.

Very pleasantly surprised by the bagels here. As a NY native, I am highly critical but these bagels have the right texture inside and out.
Unfortunately, my toaster ate one. -

last visit i witnessed something i found disturbing - their eggs are prepared in plastic containers. While i'd still get their bagels - unless they chnage how they prepare eggs - i'll think twice about it.

After giving house of bagels WAY too many chances, we started coming here instead.
The hummus bagel is pretty yummy and it's only $4.00. Bagel, generous smear of hummus on both halves of the bagel , tomato, lettuce, onion, and sometimes they put sprouts on it, but the past few times we've gone they haven't had any sprouts. I always get avocado on mine. :D
The hummus they use is extra tasty... I'm not sure what's in it... it kinda tastes like celery and pepper... similar to how chicken salad tastes, but its not chicken salad. hah. It's not the same bland hummus that many other bagel shops use.
They have tons of cold drinks to choose from and they also have a large selection of Numi and other teas.
Oh, and they have hot cider! I haven't tried it, but I was on a search for non-starbucks-million-calories hot cider in alameda one day and did a yelp search that yielded nothing, so I feel I should mention it just in case someone else is doing that same thing.
The service can be a little awkward sometimes, but everyone there is always nice. -

I can't go with the crowd on this one - but it has nothing to do with the bagels.
I am actually quite partial to Boogie Woogie bagels. The asiago cheese one is a personal favorite.
But anyplace that tells me, after I have purchased my product, that they categorically refuse to prepare it to my request - oh they lose stars.
Boogie Woogie will not microwave bagels. They say it makes them hard once they cool. Hello! The damn thing isn't going to be around long enough to get cold! I do not like toasted bagels (because toasting makes the edges hard, thank you) and so I usually request the bagel be nuked for a few seconds. But Boogie Woogie will not, even if you beg, even though they have a microwave on the premises.
I had this experience here twice and I have not set foot inside the store since.Listed in: Excuse Me?

These bagels are good.
The people who work here are really nice.
They take debit cards.
There are little kids running around.
I am pretty bleary eyed when I show up, so I don't think I can be more observant than that. -

I have to admit, I didn't set foot into Boogie Woogie till late last year (though I've lived in Alameda since 2002). The reason being it is located at what I unconsciously considered the "butt end" of Park St. You know, it's south of Encinal, where the storefronts start to lose their Main St. USA charm and appeal. Maybe it's because it's across from the aquarium store that looks closed all the time. And that is next to a crusty-looking gym ("health club"?) where I imagine people tossing medicine balls back in forth in tube socks and nut-hugger shorts, or strapped into one of those old-school contraptions that vibrate your ass. (What were those things anyway? What were they meant to do and when are they going to make a comeback?? That would be sweet!)
Anyhoo, back to the bagels. I used to be partial to Bagel House---on a "hipper" part of Park St.---sandwiched between Starbucks and Happy Trails. Convenient but nothing to write home about. Not bad, either, just average.
Then, on a whim, I took my 2-year-old daughter Tabi to BWBB one morning. I ordered a Multi-seed bagel (toasted of course) with their Lox Dill cream cheese. The spread was AWESOME and I like the texture of the bagel (chewy and moist, even toasted). I thought I liked the Lox Spread at House of Bagels, but BWBB blows it away, IMHO. I've been back 3-4 times in the last few months. Just writing about this makes me wanna go get one! -

If you can't get into Alameda every day, The Beanery on College in Elmwood sells BWBB's bagels. And they are sooooo delicious. Maybe not the New York idea of a bagel, but the best bagel I've ever had in the Bay Area.
I haven't been to the store, so I can't comment on service or appearance of the business, but the bagels speak loudly enough that this is a successful one. -

eta: HEY ANDY! the clown is a friend of the owners and a kiddy party clown lady who does some awesome face painting and excellent balloon animals and is very, very nice and not at all scary like those other clowns. You should say hi sometime.
One of my favorite things about Alameda. We come here all the way from the west end [imagine!] once or twice a week. We usually get bacon, egg and cheese, which is huge, fluffy, yummy. I've also sampled the lox schmear and ham and cheese croissants on numerous occasions, it's all delicious. Bagel quality is far superior to that other bagelry down Park. The couple that runs the place is almost as delightful as their little girl, prices are good, the baker's dozen of day-olds is four lousy dollars and one of the best deals in town. I haven't tried the drinks because we pair our visits with some free-trade French press from Julie's next door.
Tip: park a block over on Park *Avenue* -- no meters, more spaces, and a nice walk past the jasmine and horse-ringed houses.Listed in: I #!$#$ Love Alameda

Another Alameda staple.
I love their bagels and the fact that they give you a serious helping of whatever spread you want with them. They are never too crowded so when you're running late for that summer job in the morning, they get your bagel ready fast and you're on your way.
Plus, any place that remembers you need milk with your order and reminds you while you're half-asleep at 8:50am, ranks up a few stars in my book.Listed in: Home.

Hm.. I dunno, maybe 4.25 stars....
Nice service here though a little out-of-step/weird/etc. Kinda cool interior. Prices are fair. Big props for the awesome variety (they offer salmon, crab, hummus, and other bagelwiches).
Very yummmmmmy breakfast bagelwich... it had an excellent flavor & filled me up! The gf's veggie one was pretty good too though seemed a little overfilled with cream cheese. Delicious bagels in general, too.
We'll definitely go back when the mood strikes!
P.S. They have individual little Silk soy milk drinks (chocolate) avail. for purchase, too! -

The fact that I could budget my meager high school allowance for daily trips makes this place 4-stars in my book.
I had to have the asiago jalapeno cheese bagel, the perfect combination of chewy and crunchy. Prices are great and fresh bagels on an hourly basis! -

Things have changed a bit at the Boogie Woogie Bagel Boy, not the least of which is the fact that Buki the Clown that used to frighten me regularly when I went in on the weekends seems to have moved away. Normally, given my bozophobia (i.e., the fear of clowns), this would be wonderful news, but unfortunately the bagel quality has slipped recently so I regretfully have to drop a star from my review of the Boogie Woogie.
The problem seems to be that they're rushing everything: the bagels regularly come out a little underdone just so they can get them out to the customers a little sooner. Bagels need to be cooked through and have a bit of a rest before they are ready to be served - a bagel straight out of the oven is a bit too mushy until it cools. Secondly, their recently repaired toaster is just too fast - the bagel never gets sufficiently toasted, in fact barely even gets warmed, so I have to ask them to put it through twice.
Still, the bagels are generally high quality, and the owners are the sweetest people on the planet. Currently the best bagels around are being made by their former sibling company Berkeley Bagels, but Boogie Woogie is running a close second.
And there are no more clown sneak attacks, thank god.Listed in: The Great East Bay Breakfast…, The Alameda Breakfast Project

Like it's sibling stores in Berkeley, this biz really knows bagels. The store is always kind of messy, but the staff seems better schooled in how to assemble a bagle mit stuff on it. Plenty of juices and cream cheeses to choose from, and a friendly hang out and read the paper atmosphere.
They started serving 2 kinds of whitefish salad a while ago, so ask about it first- I'm not sure which they decided on keeping in stock.Listed in: Breakfast Snobbery

I love this place as a simple breakfast place to pick up a good bagel. I love bagel sandwiches and as far as I know, this is the only place in Alameda that is dedicated to selling bagel sandwiches.
I'm also impressed by the owners of this joint who are very friendly and makes me want to come more often just because I want to support their business. = )
I just tried the veggie bagel. It's quite awesome! -

Love the bagels!!! I come here at least once a month to buy bagels for the office and the bagels are fantastic. Often, they've just brought a batch right out of the oven so the bagels are still warm.
The bagels have a good crust and the inside is soft and chewy. They can easily compete with NYC bagels The owner is friendly and nice as well. -

My favorite local Bagel Joint. I personally love there Jalapeo Begel with their Locks/Cream spread. Yuuuuuuummmy. That Locks spread is so damn tasty. They have some nice herbs in there along with nice creamy cream cheese.. damn is that not the best locks and cream?
They also have good sandwiches. -
Review from Garfield J.

I went here 2 weeks ago. I used to hit the one over on Piedmont Ave in Oakland before that strip mall was remodeled. At that time, I found that BWBB were simply the best bagels available in the BayArea.
Does any other Yelpers know if the one on Park Blvd in Alameda is still run by the original/same people? I ask because the Bagels were not the same, the store had way too much other stuff being sold there, it was junky, Asian foods, candy bars...there were 2 Asian ladies working there. Tacky little hand written menu items on white paper. It reminded me of a Asian run donut shop.
So to further confuse things, I go to the new Whole Foods today in Oakland and they had been carrying H@H Bagels out of NewYork @ 89cents a pop, and today they had BWBB at 69 cents. After digging the last 2 weeks of H@H, I was unsure if I wanted to score an average BWBB like I had in Alameda.....I scored 2 Poppie Seeds and whadda ya know.....they were like the old ones I recall back over on Piedmont Ave.....
So I am guessing, perhaps the Original owner sold the outlet over on Park St to the Asian family , maybe taught them how to make bagels/gave them the recipe?....and the original guys are now doing Commerical accounts???
anyone? -

Oakland, CA
First things first, I really do enjoy their bagels and cream cheese. My personal favorite is the onion bagel. It tastes much better than Noah's and Posh Bagel, which are both way too overloaded with burnt onion pieces.
The only downside to the Boogie Woogie Bagel Boy is the fact that the sodas are all expired. I went here today and grabbed a Diet Coke. The expiration date read "May 07, 07". I then opted for the Diet Pepsi, which expired in March 2007! The chips are no better. They sometimes sell chips past their prime. Honestly, that is unacceptable and disgusting.
I remember when this bagel shop was owned by a different family and I never experienced this problem. This has happened twice and I probably will not return despite the tasty onion bagels. -

Berkeley Bagel aka Boogie Woogie Bagel is very good, even better than my erstwhile favorite Truckee Bagel. Almost as good as Detroit Bagels and superior to NYC ones.
But, ahem, about the microwaved or steamed (cafe strada), these are traditional techniques to make stale bagels taste like grocery store bagels. So rather than complain about their unwillingness to downgrade the product, why not shop for the plastic entombed ones at Safeway or Trader Joes? They're cheaper.
And besides, I hate waiting to pick up my dozen bagels, behind a handful of folks designing their perfect $2.50 breakfast. Yes, the service there is not exemplary - though little price to pay for quality.

It's true, the owners and staff here are wonderfully sweet. I rarely drive into Alameda just for a bagel but I will continue to support this business as much as possible when it comes to fulfilling my bagel cravings.

This stuff is good. I even licked the lox cream cheese (which i normally Hate) out of its little plastic bucket. So good! -

1. Best bagel name ever
2. I remember having a field trip in the back of the shop and thinking that it would be really cool to be a bagel baker for a living. 15 years later, I realize that job would actually suck ass after about 2 hours, but I still think it's cool they allowed a bunch of 1st graders into their kitchen
3. They put too much cream cheese on their regular bagels, but their bagel sandwiches are stellar -

If you are from New York, you might not think this is the best bagel shop ever, but then you are in California now, so either get over it, or go back to the East Side. I swear, I get so annoyed with the whole "I'm from NY and this bagel, pizza, cheesecake, DJ, knife fight, etc., is nothing compared to what we get back home." So go back home then where everything is so much cooler and quick hogging up space in my not-New York city. But I digress.
I love Boogie Woogie because the service and quality are always reliable. The owners are wonderful people that remember and care about their customers. And they make a damn delicious breakfast bagel with egg and cheese. They have a huge variety of sandwiches they make on either bagels or croissants (the croissants are amazingly flaky and buttery). The regular coffee is fresh and hot and you can get a super-sweet Vietnamese iced coffee if you are in need of a high-octane boost. Bet you can't find that at a bagel shop in New York.
p.s. I have nothing against New Yorkers. In fact, some of them are my best friends! -

I've stopped here a couple of times on my way down Park St. They've got a pretty good selection of bagels as well as cream cheeses. However, what I really enjoy is the Thai Iced Tea! It's on the strong side, and not overly sweet. You can get a large for under $2. Perfect pick-me-up for those lazy sunday afternoons.

Best bagel place in the world. The people who own and run the place are the sweetest people and they know me personally now since this is the only place that my boyfriend goes for bagels. The owner knows a lot of his customers personally and it has a very homely atmosphere. Delicious delicious egg-turkey-cheese with avocado breakfast bagel. The Works!

These people are really nice and hard working. They have a really cute kid too. I love the bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! They just need to move closer to Peet's and my life will be complete.
