I came here for breakfast because I heard they had lots of options for Vegans, and I wasn't let down.
We got here right after they opened and they filled up pretty quick.
I had a salad for breakfast (I often do this), and I was totally impressed!!! It was completely unique, I will definitely be going back to try some of the more traditional vegan breakfast specialties.
Little Shanghai Salad: This was sooooo unique and tasty! I eat a lot of salads, so its hard to surprise me, but this really knocked by socks off. I asked for the dressing on the side (thankfully, it was a very heavy/thick/sweet peanut sauce, and it might have been too heavy if it were mixed in). Anyways, it paired PERFECTLY with the apples and the red fermented cabbage. I had it with the tofu and the tofu was soooo tasty. I generally don't like the tofu in SF too much, but here it was very nice and warm and lightly grlled. Way awesome salad for only $8.
Fruit Salad: I ordered this as well and it was a huge portion and the fruit was nice and ripe and a good mix of melons, orange, strawberry, etc... I had to take it to go as the salad totally filled me up.
The service was friendly and the atmosphere is exactly what you would expect from an affordable, neighborhood breakfast place. Very nice. Will be back. -

I would not recommend doing this, especially in the Mission District. My date is Kelly, which is also coincidently one of the dancers in the 1980's musical movie. I became Ozone. And together we danced Breakin': "Electric Boogaloo"-style to Boogaloos for our lunch.
"There's no stopping us now!"
Here is the video to refresh your memory: http://www.youtube.com...
My date works not far from the corner café and has been here many times. But this is my debut.
I ordered the popular 22nd St(eak) sandwich (cool name, huh?) For $9.50, the sandwich comprised a thin steak with sliced onions and bell peppers cooked fajita-style in a baguette. A side of home fries is also included with the sandwich. For the price, the sandwich was pretty good with the grease of the meat makes the other ingredients tasty. The side of home fries was nice and crispy. My Meal: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
My date had a double stack of Lemon Corncakes. For $5.00, you get two flapjacks. I took a bite and you get a taste of the corn with the nice lemony citrus taste combine. She also got a side of home fries for $2.50. The potato side is very popular here. Her meal: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
As we were enjoying our meal, I was browsing through menu for a future visit, hopefully with my daughter. We were also listening to Janet Jackson's album. My date knows the lyrics to all of her songs. "She must be a Janet Jackson fan!"
Health Department gave a score of 89. Pretty good score for a café in the Mission. Score:
Despite the mid-rating, I like the food here and the waitress was very friendly. I may moonwalk my way back here again for some good breakfast. -
Review from Talia G.
I'm really just a big fan of the name of this place. Who doesn't like saying BOOGALOOS?! I'm a dork, I know.
I came at 10:30 and the wait was about 10-15 minutes. Not bad. It was longer by the time we left at 11:30ish, but that's to be expected.
Food? Interesting. A good interesting...I think. Honestly, I'm still not entirely sure and so, until I come again, I have to give it three stars.
I ordered the Polenta-n-Eggs with eggs over easy. The polenta was DELICIOUS, I wanted a meal of all polenta. The cabbage that came with it was good, the beans and eggs were standard.
We also ordered a Plantain Cake for the table because it sounded so intriguing. This is where I'm really unsure how I feel - I think I liked it, but it was so strange that I'm not confident I did. From the outside, the cake looked like a large hunk of meatloaf. When you cut into it, it looked like a rectangle of mashed pinto beans. When you ate it, it tasted like plantains. Really bizarre, yet I continued to eat it... I guess that means I liked it?
Unfortunately, my dad ordered the Desayuno Tipico which is the meal based around that large hunk of mashed plantains. He didn't like it and ate only the beans, eggs, and tortillas.
I'll be back to decide what I really think of Boogaloos. I suspect that it'll grow on me as time goes on. -

I'll admit, I avoided this place like the plague for so long because I deemed
it a "hipster" haven that was probably over-rated.
I caved, and glad I did.
BUT I caved before 9:30am to beat the hipster rush..
(otherwise my feelings may have been skewed)
I ordered the Boogaloo Classic.
To my delight, I LOVED my breakfast so much that I think I said "Oh my god,
are these potatoes mixed with stuffing? I swear they are mixed with stuffing
and baked in the oven..." about 10 times. Why? I don't know... I just had to keep
declaring how amazing they were and brainstorming how I could replicate them.
(How annoying was I, so in love with my stuffing potatoes?)
Plus, 2 eggs any style and a cornbread biscuit covered in a herb-cream gravy...YUM!
Yes Boogaloos,
Im sorry I judged you by your enormous hipster following..it was not fair.
Forgive me???
xoxo. -

Hit these guys up as they looked like they could help out my hangover before a day-long drive.
Service was friendly and the menu included a bunch of vegetarian and vegan options. Had the Zydeco Eggs, with some zangy Andouille sausage, quality black beans and salsa. Scramble wasn't the best and the corn bread muffin thing was balls, but overall the meal hit the spot just right. Would've given them a four if the coffee wasn't average. -
Review from David T.
It was a decent breakfast joint, but I didn't experience anything here that would make me crave it over any other breakfast type joint. I had the omelette and it was literally just eggs and 1 type of cheese. I'm not sure if I missed a step in the ordering process, but most places at least add some other things in their omelettes.
Along with the omelette I received homefries and a blueberry coffee cake. I thought the cake was okay. I prefer my cake to be cool and this came out warm/hot. My main issue with the cake was that it was a bit too light and fluffy. I prefer my cake to be a bit more dense. The homefries were really good, and I think I probably should have ordered the "temple," which is just a mound of homefries with cheese, salsa, sour cream, and other things.
I tried my friend's biscuit and gravy and we all agreed that it was far too dry, even with the seemingly copious amount of gravy ladled upon it.
Others in my party got the Chorizo hash and seemed to enjoy it, but I didn't taste it myself.
All in all, it was fine, but nothing worth going out of the way for. -

I used to go to this place all the time when I lived a block away. Now, I live a little further away and it's swarmed with hipsters, but I still have to make time to go. (We like to play a little game while waiting: "Guess the band t-shirt worn most often by the waiting diners." -- worn, ironically, of course.) If you eat dairy, get the "Temple of Spuds," if not, they have vegetarian/vegan options. Go before 10am or after 1:30 if you don't want to wait in line. Outdoor seating available if you bring furry friends. (They'll even bring you a plain, scrambled egg on a plate for said friend!) The best part: at the end of their shift, the employees sit down and eat the food. That's the best dining insurance to me! Everyone is super friendly, too!

Have you ever driven by here and wondered why the hell there was a line around the block? Yeah me too! So this weekend we got up early and got there early and still waited for close to 40 mins.....totally worth it! The staff was really friendly, and let you sip on coffee while you waited outside, dont get antsy and be a jerk, you know what you are getting into.
Once you get in make sure and get the polenta, with extra feta, and spend a little extra for a side of steak! The coffee is bomb. Go in, be patient, enjoy your meal, and be happy that you finally know what all the hype is about. -

I always enjoy going to breakfast at Boogaloos. They have a very diverse menu for us stupid vegetarians. I had a "Make it Funky" Scram with "Fake Stake" in it today; it was good as always.
Perennial favourites of mine are: Desayuno Tipico, Polenta-n-Eggs, and Harvey's Vegan Chorizo Hash. Plus, their homefries are killer.
If you would like a more detailed take on my breakfast this morning, just click on my profile here and read my 'blog-entry from today (I was chastised by the yelp* Gestapo that it is "Verboten" to actually link any personal web-sites or 'blogs here, but it's okay to have them in you profile... which seems kinda dämlich to me). -

There is no place like Boogaloos. Hands down, even the free coffee while you wait is amazing. They are sweet to kids, there are tons of vegan or vegetarian options (try the soyrizo hash or the polenta) DAYUMN! Delicious. The staff is always cool, but be prepared to wait a while if you go on a weekend morning. I wish they had dinner here, then it would be PERFECT.
BIG PLUS: I love that they sell art on the wall to raise money for different organizations. -

I'm rating Bugaloos for the free coffee, their toast (buttered for you), and the Pescado Quesadilla (the only dish I get there).
Great breakfast, busy on weekends and closes at 3pm. -

One of my favorite breakfast spots. Everything is good, but their potatoes really set them apart. They use saffron and I don't know what else but it's delicious. My friend swears by the biscuits and gravy. The servers are always friendly, without fail, and make you feel welcome. You should eat here.

The epitome of hipster. They blast [old] Metallica and Slayer during breakfast. The wait staff is tatted up and full of middle-aged angst.
The food is good. Lots of choices including vegetarian. Fyi, there is always a wait list. I recommend sitting outside on a nice day. -

It's a hipster dive diner (their menu includes "PBR in the can"), but man, is the food good.
I came here for breakfast with my girlfriend. I had the lemon cornmeal pancakes, which were possibly the best pancakes I've had in San Francisco, and a half-order of the Temple of Spuds, which (again) just might be the best potato breakfast side dish in the city. She had a tofu scramble, which was also very tasty. The coffee was strong and delicious and, although it was crowded, the service was quick.
I'll definitely be back. -

Had the "classic" which was a vegetarian dish. it was good. My friend got the polenta and it was clearly homemade. While it had good flavor i wasn't a huge fan.
Great way to start the day after a rough night. -

I ordered the eggs, Andouille sausage and black bean breakfast, and a cup of coffee. I enjoyed everything on my plate except the purple cabbage, but I'm not a big fan of cabbage.
Service was prompt, speedy, and our food was ready after a short amount of time.
Then again, it was on a Wednesday morning at 8:30AM. I'll come back to try other menu items for sure. -

My wife found this place on yelp while we were vacationing in SF this past week. She searched for a vegan brunch place (I'm allergic to eggs) and this popped up. Not sure why because it only has a few vegan options. So vegans/egg allergy folks check the menu before you head out. Maybe we missed something as I know a number of reviewers have mentioned the amount of options. Alas, we still stuck to it given the reviews.
Freshly jet lagged we arrived early for brunch around 930 AM to find we were still put on a very short waiting list. Honestly, I may fly back just for the home fries. Add a little hot sauce and you can't go wrong. I almost felt it should have been my meal.
With the lack of vegan options, I went straight to lunch and got the chicken quesadilla (with the side of home fries above). Very fresh but missing some seasoning in the spinach (hot sauce worked for me). My wife had the Desayuno Tipico, and there was a good 3 mins we didn't speak while she enjoyed her meal.
The atmosphere was fun and local. Extremely family friendly. We'd come back for sure. The wait list was much bigger when we left so be sure you get there early. -

My kind of place!! Really cool atmosphere and goooood food. I got the chorizo hash with two eggs and it was delish! I don't get easily impressed with breakfast food spots, but this place was good.
They serve breakfast all day and gets pretty busy so go early! And the entire party has to be there before they seat you, but it moves pretty fast.
Definitely a potential hangover cure spot! -

I went for brunch on a Sunday around 11am. The wait was reasonable (my friends were late arriving, but if they'd been there we would have been seated within 10 minutes).
They have outdoor seating & heat lamps. Awesome, even on a rainy day.
The food feels homecooked & tastes fresh/delicious. I got the chorizo hash & am craving some now just thinking about it.
The service is excellent. The staff kept our coffee cups filled without interrupting too much. The food came quickly & still hot!
Cool/quirky art on the walls & fun/feel-good music to complete the SF mood.
I can't wait to go back & try out the rest of the menu. Good vegan options too! -

A not so hidden spot in the Mission, but still worthy of the wait!
Boogaloos has become one of my go to spots for brunch for the following reasons:
1) Selection. They have an amazing selection of sweet and savory goodies. Highlights for me are the breakfast burrito and the temple o' spuds!
2) Even when there's a wait, it's rarely long. Plus you can walk down to Ritual to grab a quick cup o' joe while you wait.
3)There's usually some interesting pieces of art on the wall. And enough good people watching to keep the conversation going. -
Review from Mel G.
This was one of the first brunch places I visited when I moved to SF a year and a half ago, and I loved it. The building it's housed in is very cool, and it has that comforting, greasy spoon diner/your local hangout feel. The eggs breakfast was really delicious, and I'd definitely recommend it/look forward to coming back one day!

One of my favorite brunch haunts in San Francisco. Great selection on the menu, easy-going, attentive staff and plenty of vegan options.
I've been here several times over the past few years and everything has always be consistent, from food to service.
I'll definitely be back. -

San Francisco, CA
The lemon cornmeal pancakes were legit BUT I dont like the fact that they charge $1 extra for REAL syrup. I ordered the chorizo hash and it was a greasy, oniony mess. I told the waitress to take it back and bring me the regular chorizo and eggs. Again- it was pretty horrible. The scramble was bland, the black beans were cold and tastless and the cabbage? WTF is cabbage doing in my bfast? LOL. I would come here strictly for the pancakes and order REAL syrup. =)

Agree with the overall rating of 3.5 stars.
Just a dive breakfast joint. Basic options, nothing fancy. For $9 you can get 2 eggs, biscuit/muffin/bread, and fruit and/or bacon, etc.. portions are decent.
Nothing special. If you can walk in and are looking for a decently priced meal - go for it. I would not recommend going if you have to wait for a table. -

Who don't like boogaloos?!
I really like this place for breakfast and brunch. On the weekends the lines are long, but worth the wait. I like the Desayuno Tipico, and the andouille sausage breakfast plate. The coffee is also pretty good. They do have 3 beers on tap. -

San Francisco, CA
I'll hoof it all the way across town for breakfast here. Good vegetarian and vegan options. While I am chomping down tofu scramble, it's a nice touch to have some eclectic playlists (i.e. Gwar followed by Enya) playing in the background. The wait can be long, but it is worth standing around.
Atmosphere: Close-quarters diner style, worn-in furniture and art from Creativity Explored on the walls.
Crowd: Mission hipsters, post-hipsters, neo-hipsters, etc.
Try: Tofu Scramble with Peanut Sauce, plus flour tortillas to wrap it
Skip: Bringing large parties. Small tables mean long waits for big groups (more than 5). -
Review from Britt B.
San Francisco, CA
First impression:
I love the old-school run down look of the place and the huge crowd of hipsters outside waiting for a table. I'm not being sarcastic, honest. I find it charming.
Second impression:
I think the cell phone policy is weird (I rarely use my phone when I'm out eating btw). I thought I was the only one weirded out by that. Thanks to fellow yelpers I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. After reading that, I felt like a kid being told "you can look but not touch" and all I wanted to do was go on my phone.
Third impression:
Food is good but nothing that stands out too much. I love how big the cup of joe is but am not a fan of the flavor. Service isn't horrible but is nothing special either.
Overall impression:
It's really just an ok place to me. If there was nothing else around or if someone asked me to, I'd probably revisit. But that's just it- there are tons of better places around. -

When I think Boogaloos, I think diner-style food with a southwestern twist and a lot of vegetarian options. And the line. Always a line. I love having a place where my vegetarian friends don't have to feel resigned to ordering sides as their main, but still, I don't really see what all the hubbub is about.

Today was my first visit to Boogaloos. I'll definitely go back.
I had the chorizo scramble with black beans and tortillas. It was very good and not overly-priced, especially considering how crowded they always are. Seems that there's always a line. We were seated right away as it was a cool SF day (yes, we even get those in the Mission on occasion) and we were willing to sit outside at a sidewalk table. They have outdoor heaters and it was actually quite pleasant. They have an extensive menu of vegetarian and non-vegi dishes which is always a plus with the friends I hang out with. Our waiter was very nice and the food came really quickly!
Boogaloos is definitely on my short list for brunch now. -
Review from Geeta S.
San Francisco, CA
Two stars for their wide selection of food and their appearance of cleanliness.
What I liked about Boogaloos:
1. Their wide selection of food gives vegans, vegetarians, meat-eaters, and health-conscious people options.
2. Their clean plates and cutlery. After having read an article that morning in SFGate about the Jan 1, 2012 minimum wage increase to $10.24 (highest in the U.S) and the associated comment by a reader, that if he's eating off the plate, ensuring that the dishwasher is well paid is darn important, really resonated with me. I looked at my plate and cutlery and they were clean :).
Their latest San Francisco Department of Public Health score (from 10/13/2011) is 94/100, for two violations: (a) a moderate degree of food risk due to Rodents/Roaches/Flies/Other Animals, (b) a low degree of food risk due to Floors, Walls, Ceilings Improperly constructed, in disrepair, not clean. Both were abated on 10/26/2011.
What I didn't like about Boogaloos:
After reading so many reviews, looking at everyone's plates, and waiting for an hour, my food and my companion's food was not tasty. This is huge for me for three reasons:
1. I do not own a car and was long awating the day to have someone with a car to have brunch with me. I was able to go have brunch in a SF neighbourhood that was not walkable from my 'hood (outside of Marina, Pacific Heights, Japantown, Russian Hill, Nob Hill, North Beach, SOMA, FiDi, Chinatown, Tenderloin/nob, Civic Center). After a couple of looks on Yelp, confirmation that they were open on 1/1/2012, looking over the menu, and the probability of never finding easy parking until Thanksgiving or Christmas week 2012, I decided on Boogaloos over the other 20 places on my list.
2. I suffering from the inability to eat as much as I like if I ever expect to improve my health (I suffer from mobility issues which limit my ability to burn calories through exercise, being on the wrong side of 25, and having a tendency to store fat due to my gender = female). After gaining 50+ lbs in less than a year due to health issues, it has been a slow tortuous battle to lose weight by diet alone, i.e. EATING HEALTHY. I hardly ever eat out anymore; I eat well but it's all nicely prepared tasty and HEALTHY food.
So when I go out to eat, I have a couple of requirements. If I'm going to pay someone to prepare and serve my food, it should (a) be something I can't make at home and tastes as good as what I can cook at home. If I can make it at home, it should taste better than what I would make at home. (b) if it's not healthy, aka fattening, the calories better darn well be worth it, (c) it should be a reasonably clean establishment = doesn't gross me out and interfere with my enjoyment of the food.
3. We waited an hour for a table. By this time, I hadn't eaten for almost 16 hours. In my life, most food tastes good to me by this point.
I got the Boogaloos Classic - the biscuit looked delicious and was large. Unfortunately, it was dense, undercooked, and not at all fluffy. I love fluffy biscuits. I hate undercooked dense biscuits. The sauce looked delicious but it wasn't. I wish I could describe it but I can't. That's a reflection on my inability to pinpoint the blandness of the sauce, not on how bad the sauce was.
My companion got the Burrito Desayuno with a couple of extra toppings. He was unimpressed; it tasted pretty bland, was light on fillings, and that his beans and sour cream weren't in the burrito (in all fairness, the menu says served with beans and sour cream - he didn't catch that this meant on the side of the plate not in the burrito).
The home fries were ok, but they weren't tasty and were definitely not worth the calories. My companion and I love home fries normally - it's a healthy diet person's guilty indulgence as, unlike dark chocolate and ice cream, it has no nutritional value whatsoever.
Maybe we just ordered the wrong thing but we both agreed that we've had much better. This visit was worth two stars in my book.
I guess I'll just have to wait until my brunch companion visits me again to take me elsewhere in non-walkable SF distance e.g. Cole or Noe Valley, the Mission, the Sunset, the Castro, the Dogpatch, etc.
Otherwise, I'll just stick to the good, pretty good, and great brunch places that are in or close to my neighborhood. -

If you can get a seat outside on the west side, it is nice for a late brunch. But I wouldn't wait 45 minutes to eat here. Good hash.

The yelp newsletter said that Boogalos was one of the best places in SF to get pancakes, so roomie and I decided to check it out, since it's a short walk from our house. We realized it was never on our radar as a restaurant before because it is only open for breakfast and lunch, and we seldom walk past there before 3 when it closes. The two of us arrived on a early Sunday afternoon and put our name on the sign up sheet. There were a lot of people in front of us. We waited a while. FORTUNATELY, some people couldn't take the wait, cuz about 3 or more parties before us didn't answer when their names were called, and we were bumped up to the top of the line - yay! We both tried the meximocha with soy, which is a Mexican hot chocolate with coffee. It was really strong and a bit thick for me, I liked it at first, but as soon as I started eating, the flavor of the drink changed and I couldn't finish it, it turned icky. We both got the lemon cornmeal pancakes because those were the kind that were supposed to be so excellent, and also, I love lemon and cornmeal. I had the stack of two, which were more than enough, along with some chicken apple sausage. Roomie had the stack of 3 with the spicy sausage. I could taste the lemon, not as much the cornmeal. I liked the flavor but then it got a little dull. I would recommend adding blueberries. The sausage was tasty. They offer a lot of vegan dishes there as well - tofu things and fake meat sausage. There are tons of egg dishes and breakfast burritos. I liked my pancakes, but I didn't love my pancakes, and I think to wait outside for so long, I would have needed to love them in order to come back. Service was fast and friendly though, so if you don't mind waiting, check it out! Ps this place is cheap!

I have walked by the corner of Valencia & 22nd many many times but I have never stopped to look inside this run down place. My girlfriend found this place on Yelp. The wait was close to 30 minutes at 11am for Sunday brunch. We were seated outside which was perfect for the beautiful weather. I was impressed with all the vegan and vegetarian options on the menu from breakfast burritos to soy-chorizos and more. They also had a few different variations of mimosas. I would definitely recommend this place for brunch if you're trotting around the Mission.

Review from Carol Y.
Hip little brunch spot with pink walls, weird looking art, and a tatted up waitstaff. Turns out the art on display was produced by the developmentally disabled at an art center called Creativity Explored. Kudos for promoting disadvantaged local artists.
The food was pretty good for the breakfast variety. I had a "Make it Funky Scram", a choose-your-own-ingredients scramble (mushrooms, bell peppers, & Swiss cheese), which came with hash and toast. I threw in a "Kiddy Kake", a pancake in the shape of a random animal (mine was a mouse). All were delish. My companion had blueberry pancakes, which he very much enjoyed as well.
Unfortunately, our waitress set the check down at our table only ten minutes into our meal. She insisted, of course, that we take our time. Not cool. Later, with plenty of food still on our plates, another waitress asked if she could clear our plates. Errr, may I stop chewing first?
Though there really is no excuse for this type of service, I looked around trying to understand why the wait staff was in such a hurry. There were open tables scattered throughout the restaurant, one right beside us, and I just couldn't figure it out. Weird. -

Boogaloo's is yummy and reasonably priced. I don't mind standing in line on a Saturday morning for their Chorizo Hash special.
A few weeks ago, I met a friend here on a Tuesday morning for breakfast. The waiter who seated us forced us into a tiny seat instead of giving us a larger table. I was irritated because it wasn't busy and it was a Tuesday morning... no large crowd was coming. I will not be holding this against them though. Weird paranoid waiter would have gotten a better tip if I wasn't practically touching shoulders with my neighbors and we were seated in one of the larger spots. His loss.
