So great for so many reasons. The ice cream is really delicious and the rotating flavors ensure you can always try something different and new every time you visit. My favorite is the Cappuccino Crunch. I have never had bad service here and I've definitely come often enough to say that!

And here comes the cherry on the sundae (hee-hee): I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Bob, for a work event in which we were trying to raise money for research. He not only donated ice cream for us as incentives but stuck around to help us dole out ice cream. Afterwards, he asked what else he could do for us. So humble and dedicated to the cause!

Bonnie Brae Ice Cream and its owners are just truly great assets to the local community! Their ice cream is just the beginning!

    It's fine....just fine.

I don't know why people are so pumped on this place. It's just standard ice cream. Nothing special. Whatever, I always end up getting dragged over here and everytime I'm underwhelmed. Plus, there's such a long line.

Taste is good, but I'd probably choose to go somewhere else if given the option.

We discovered Bonnie Brae on our very first visit to Denver about 2 years ago and have returned repeatedly to indulge our sweet tooths...err.. sweet teeth?  It's one of those great neighborhood establishments that has "ye olde tyme charme" as well as awesome ice cream options.

Our favorites are the Sinfully Cinnamon and the Blueberry Cheesecake. Always in waffle cones.  Always.

While the immediate neighborhood isn't entirely suitable for scenic strolls as you lick the delicious dribbles from your cone, it's still nice to amble a short distance or maybe around the block to work off a few measly calories as you stuff your face.

I already can't wait for balmy summer nights to do this again.

The Oreos and Cream is worth the wait.

Everything I've ever wanted in ice cream is here.

Bonnie Brae is considered by many to be the best ice cream shop in Denver, but I have to say I just don't get it. Maybe it's just me, and the fact that I'm not a HUGE fan of ice cream in the first place (I know, I know) but I don't think I've ever had the overwhelming urge to go to Bonnie Brae, even on a warm summer's night.

Sure, the flavors are unique and interesting and it DOES have that "old timey" neighborhood ice cream parlor feel, but standing in line for 30+ minutes just for an ice cream cone doesn't make sense to me. Plus, I find that even though there are tons of unique flavors I always end up going to my old staples anyways.

Best part about Bonnie Brae for me is that it's a local joint where you're bound to see someone you know, and I guess it's worth going for those reasons. But the best ice cream in Denver? Meh.

Death By Chocolate - add extra chocolate syrup and chocolate sprinkles and the  kid  behind the counter will look at you like you are nuts - but it is definitely worth the embarrassment and stomach ache later. Speaking of nuts if you are allergic to them- like my husband - you can ask them to scoop with a new scoop that has not been used previously.

Peach Amaretto is a must try too. All of the ice cream is made in house as well as the waffle cones - it is wonderful to walk in and catch a whiff of them being freshly made.

The line is often out the door - especially in the summer - but it offers an opportunity to chat with your neighbors and enjoy the buzz around you.

Can't say I'm a ice cream aficionado like say my wife, but I enjoy the occasional scoop from time to time.

Overall the flavors seemed original and apparently it's all made in house. Their cookie dough flavor gets my seal of approval without hesitation

Seems a little bit pricey and parking is no fun, but it's an old school ice cream shop so you shouldn't expect drive through convenience here. What you can expect is old scool charm and good ice cream.

Sure, parking here is a hassle.  I do worry that my kids will sprint into University Avenue traffic and be squashed.  And the line on a summer weekend evening?  Lengthy.

But the ice cream is good. PersonaIly, I like the lemon and the vanilla.  The simple flavors here are the best.  Other reviewers have noted that there is competition in the Denver ice cream business.  This is true.  But most of these places will need to become far more consistent than Bonnie Brae to beat out the old stalwart.

I absolutely crave the Grand Marnier Chocolate Chip.  It's chocolate orange flavored ice cream, with big chunks of semi-sweet chocolate.  So, so delicious.  Their waffle cones are also delicious, and there is ample outdoor seating to enjoy a cone in the sunshine or in the night breeze.  There's not much room inside for rainy days, though.

I like that they offer toppings for the ice cream too, besides sprinkles.  They have gummy bears and M&Ms and a few other basics.

And did I mention how absolutely delicious and creamy their homemade ice cream is?  YUMMM!

I gave this place another shot...I mean everyone/everything deserves one, yes? Well, I tried the peppermint ice cream in a waffle cone.  The ice cream had flavor, but really due to the strong flavoring of the peppermint candies...What I have realized about BB, is that their base is very bland, almost completely void of flavor at all. And just by throwing in a few added ingredients, say Oreo's does not do enough to pump up the flavor to truly be outstanding! Which is too bad.

My recommendation, for $5 try this: Buy some excellent Vanilla bean gelato from Whole Foods, buy a waffle cone from BB for $1.50. If you have a sensitive palate and like to taste your food...you'll be much happier.

What could be more surreal than walking up to this brightly lit beacon, with a huge crowd outside enjoying their ice cream, on a hot summer evening, huge, warm raindrops plopping on my head, and a technicolor sunset in the background?

Just one of experiences that made me fall in love with Denver. I didn't have the ice cream, but accompanied a friend there. He said it was good, but the review is just for the whole experience of going there. ;)

I would like to give this place 4.5 stars but that's not an option so just know that this is definitely a 4+ stars kinda joint.

The ice cream is made fresh daily and flavors change daily. They have such yumminess as Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, Snickers Delight (imagine Snickers bar and vanilla ice cream), Gingerspice, Reese's Cup, Peach Melba and more.

You can any size from an itty bitty for about $1 to a quart for $7.50. If you buy a quart they even throw in free cones.

Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. I'll for sure be back the next time I'm in Denver!

The small shop gets pretty chaotic with waves of people and their brats coming in every 5-10 minutes.  Standing in line with inconsiderate parents and their demon spawn made me want to get my tubes tied ASAP.  The ice cream here is pretty average and not worth the aggravation.  Other downsides:  parking is non-existent and they do not offer Rocky Road ice cream (wtf?).

    Meh.  Serious Meh.

I wish that Ice Cream Parlors that look like this, you know, all "Olde Style Ice Cream Shoppe" and all that, would actually serve good, rich, flavorful "Olde Style Ice Cream."

Sadly, most don't.  This includes Bonnie Brae.

The parking situation is a royal Pain in the Butt.

The ice cream is slack and flavorless, lacking anything special to make it taste like good-quality ingredients.  (Not Madascar Vanilla Extract.  Or Fresh Bing Cherries.  Or Dark Swiss Chocolate.   Nada.)

Skip it.   Get your indulgence calories elsewhere.

OK, I'm bumping them down a couple of stars because I just don't think it's worth the hassle - parking, stand in line, Wash Park yuppies and their spawn, yadda yadda.

The real loser for me today was the ice cream.  One smallish scoop of Oreos and Cream and one scoop of Tiramisu.  If you blindfolded me I could not have told you which was which.  They could have both been vanilla.  Just no flavor in either one.  I want my calories back because they were totally wasted on this pabulum.  And, it was almost $5.

Save your money and get some Haagen Daz or Ben and Jerry's at King Soopers.  At least you might be able to determine what flavor you are eating.

If I had an exchange student from Uzbekistan and just one day to entertain him here in Denver, I'd make sure to get two things in.  First, a few rounds of bowling at the Monaco Lanes, and then a trip to Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. It's like packing in The Big Lebowski and the Fourth of July within 24 hours.

Many a time I've gone in there with the better half and kiddos, swearing to "be good" and either settle for sherbet (which I never enjoy), or bid my time watching everyone else dribble ice cream goo off the bottom of their chins.  Invariably, I relent and end up getting a double scoop with Strawberry New York Cheesecake coupled with Tiramisu, justifying it by convincing myself my next 10-mile run will make up for it.

There's so much good to list about Bonnie Brae, I'm left to be mostly cheeky in my "bad" section.

The Good: No other joint on my list deserves 5 stars more than Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. They make all of their, I dunno, 40 flavors of ice cream, some standards, many of their own creation.  They take one group at a time, from a line that's almost invariably out the door, and their fun and friendly.  Free samples abound.  Any ice cream establishment that can make a client snowshoe there is A-OK with me.  For quick treats on special occasions, BB always stocks a freezer full of ice-cream cakes and mud pies, rewards for those special moments, like a two-homer game in Little League, or a day without beating up your little sister.

The Bad: Their employee board had Polaroids of smiling team members in uniform, along with their favorite ice cream.  Three of them had "Monkey Finger". Yuck. Where has that finger been? Yikes! After the staff clarified that it was banana ice cream with chunks of Butterfinger in it, we understood, but couldn't stop mocking it.  I mean, would you name your prize creation "Hog Warts" or "Johnson's Cream"? How about "Toe Jam", "Bunky Junkie", or "Dingleberry"?  I think not. Only real bummer is that parking is sometimes a tad irritating, as the next door liquor store has a rent-a-cop patrolling the closest prime real estate.

Bottom Line: Bench and table space unavailability is a good testament to the wholesome goodness.  Ben and Jerry have been seen here stealing ideas.  If you have one ice cream scoop as a last request, make it from Bonnie Brae.

And no, I don't work for them.  They're just that good. Elvis would never leave this building.

First off, I consider myself fairly well versed in what constitutes great ice cream.  I grew up in New England where Ice Cream will be served in the dead of winter.  More importantly however, I make my own ice in my home and I have learned what it takes to make a great batch.

    The Review:

I've now been to Bonnie Brae 5 or 6 of times hoping for better, but I still haven't found their ice cream up to snuff.  You are probably thinking to yourself, why does this guy keeping going back for more if he doesn't like it.  Well, up until now Denver really did not have many options when it comes to ice cream, so Bonnie Brae was all their really was.

So why don't I recommend BB?
Their ice cream is about as what I could find at my local safeway.  There is no creativity in their flavors, just standard stuff.

What do I like about BB?
The atmosphere is great.  It feels just like an old school ice cream shop from the 50s or 60s and there is usually a guy playing his guitar up front.  The line usually stretches down the road which is similar to Bi Rite in San Fran.  The portions are also large which can be good or bad depending on your digestive system.  And lastly, their staff takes care of all customers to make for a great experience.

    How can BB improve?
The experience at BB is the strongest part to my scorecard for them, but in order to gain my respect, more time needs to be spent on developing a better ice cream.  A creamier formula for the base is where I would start first, maybe bring up the milk fat content and egg yolks.  Next I would spend some time and come up with some original recipes.  The classics are great (rocky road, chocolate, vanilla, cookies n cream), but you need to innovate.

Conclusion: Bonnie Brae is a Denver institution in the ice cream business, however with the recent influx of new ice cream choices I can't help but wonder if Bonnie Brae will succeed in a now competitive market.  More time is needed in coming up with creative recipes and a creamier ice cream.

I visited this place for the first time Tuesday. It was ok. Service was friendly. Ice cream was meh.

Their ice cream looked too sugary which was a turnoff. I'm not into eating a lot of sweets, so I look for flavors that don't speak of sugar. Their black walnut was good, for example. Overall, their options for my palate seemed quite limited compared to other places.

I was biking around town sweating my rear off and suddenly it appeared as though sent from Heaven. It was 94 degrees outside and as I opened the door and felt the coolness of the ice cream I was happy. Then I tried the ice cream ;)

I had a waffle cone that was dipped in white chocolate and sprinkles, then overflowing with mint chocolate chip deliciousness. *Drool* I went overboard, but didn't think twice about it. Everything about this place takes me back to being young and getting ice cream with my family or sports team.

It's small, cozy, yet fresh, and refreshing! I would eat here daily if I didn't think I'd gain 50 lbs! I sat on a bench outside and enjoyed my tasty treat to the last bite. This was the beginning of a patronage that will continue as long as I live in the Denver area!

The scoop, in one (admittedly long) sentence:

After waiting in the line that went out the door, we moved quickly to the front and expectantly placed our orders -- carefully chosen from a large selection including many original flavors but lacking the exotic variety you will find at Liks -- which were efficiently dipped by an understandably exhausted-looking employee and then happily devoured by us as we walked up and down the block because there was nowhere to sit.

All right, who is Bonnie Brae? I was to busy enjoying the ice cream to ask, but I keep meaning to find out. Whoever Bonnie is, she seems to own this entire block, and everyone and their grandmother just loves her ice cream.

Bonnie, wherever you are, how on Earth did you get such an eclectic collection of businesses named for you? Flowers? A tavern? Ice cream? Ah, I think I'll bring my six year old niece for ice cream, then drop her off to look at the flowers while I pop into the tavern and wine and liquor store. You seem also to have a dental clinic in Denver- excellent. I'll need it after pigging out on the Sinfully Cinnamon.

A google search also turns up a boys' home, an elementary school, an auction house, and a getaway cabin.

I recommend that someone tell me who the heck Bonnie Brae is, tout de suite, or else I will be forced to return to this adorable ice cream parlor despite the loooong drive and looooong lines and ponder the question over a big scoop of Rocky Road. In fact, if you don't know who she is, I recommend you do the same. Can we get the line to stretch all the way around the block?

I like the idea of Bonnie Brae Ice Cream better than I actually like their ice cream.  Old Denver neighborhood institution, making their own ice cream, with cherubic children and their doting parents sitting on benches--its just so warm and fuzzy old fashioned.  (In reality, its more like Uggs-wearing teenagers and their Wash Park moms piling out of their Denalis and talking on their cell phones ordering homemade ice cream from a Denver institution.)

The ice cream is OK.  It's very rich, and it left a layer of butteriness on my mouth and lips when I was done.  Which I didn't really like.  But some folks may like that level of richness.  The flavors are standard ice cream shop fare.

Overall I like the idea of the place.  Institutions are hard to come by these days.  And if supporting one means I spend a few bucks on a cup of cookies 'n cream, I'm there.

So we met my cousins here last night after my birthday dinner at Osaka Sushi.

Hadn't been to this place since I was a kid.  The name Dolly Madison was somewhere among the signage then.  But it looked pretty much the same inside.  Friendly & efficient young people working.  Lots of flavor choices.  Homemade ice cream.   Many cone choices.

My son ordered coffee.  This is not a good place to order coffee.  Our gal disappeared into the back and was gone for a long while... and when she came back it was clear she had been microwaving some cold coffee.
Oh, nooooooo!  My cousin thought it should be free if it was nuked.  I rather agree.   But basically, I would say, just don't order coffee here.  It is not their specialty.

Their rum raisin ice cream is very good.  Better than Haagen Dasz (sp?).

Everyone else in our group got something with chocolate.  All were satisfied.

What a crowd scene this joint is!  We knew that it would be though.  My cousin saw lots of people he knew.  That was interesting...for him....

I do not know about the prices because my cousin treated...thank you, cousin!

What more can be said about this spot that been reviewed 29,000 times already. Being me and not shy on sharing what I think I have to put my two cents in.

This is cool little place and walking in you have this feeling that you have found a proverbial diamond in the rough! The only problem being 70 Percent of Denver already knows it and on this 40 degree day there was a line out the door! The girls liked the idea of we were going for Ice Cream but it hit them after walking the half block to it, Why are we getting Ice Cream when its this freaking cold out?

Jostling with the crowd for positioning on who was next, I planned ahead and had the girls decide what was their individual flavor du jour! Next was the inexplicably hard task of deciding on cone and scoops! Oldest went with the lemon sherbet on a cake cone, she liked it but was disappointed that they didn't have white choc chips mix ins, told her your bad for not wanting to step out of you box and get anything different! Middle went with the Cookie and Cream double scoop on a cake cone. Since I am basically a big arse kid I had to get a cone also and ordered the Cashew Delight on a sugar cone!

The space is small and cute but being that 3 suburban's of 8 year old soccer players and moms with starbucks cups walked in right before us we had to make out way outside and curb it. All three cones were tasty and the cookies and cream was double stuffed with cookies and my cashew delight had enough cashews to be in a can!

Ultimately this is the type of spot you feel good about going to its small, cute, and independent! We will definitely be back, we did get a couple looks like this isn't your neighborhood and my only response to that is the World is my Hood!

I really wanted this to be a 5 star experience. It was not.

My daughters and I went after school today, it was about 3:12 when we arrived. There was a smallish line and after been scolded by another customer for propping the door open it was our turn to order. The young man helping us was both nice and efficient. We ordered a single Chocolate scoop in a waffle cone, Cookie Dough in a cup and Snicker's Delight on a sugar cone. It was over 10 bucks. to be painfully honest the richness, flavor or over all quality was nothing to write home about. It was average and I've had MUCH better for A LOT less money. I feel bad about saying it a loud.

We took our treat outside where we had two experiences. A very well adorned and styled mom was chatting with her friend ignoring the fact that her 2 yr. old was standing...NOT sitting in her chair. This is almost always going to end poorly. It did , the kid flipped over backwards, cracked her head causing almost everyone to become hysterical. Ice cream is NOT a parent folks and chairs are NOT for standing.

We then decided to take our stuff back home. We rounded the corner to our car where we were met with what I can only describe as the following ... If someone were to have landed a 777 jetliner at Wash Park full of dozens and dozens of middle school kids who had not had ice cream in the last 8 or so years, they suddenly opened the airplane doors gave them each 5 bucks and told them to RUN!!! That's the exact scenario we had today. They came running...flooding to the ice cream shop. Any body who arrived after these kids will be waiting till next Tuesday for their cones. I realize this is not the fault of Bonnie Brae Ice Cream at all, but if you're looking for a peaceful, laid back afternoon of indulgence this is not the place for you.

    Quality... average
    Prices... Meh
Experience overall... hmm OK. But we could have done better.
This ice cream compared to NO ice cream... good.

Bonnie Brae is hands down the best ice cream place I've had in Colorado.

Granted: There's no parking, the line goes out the door, there are a few places to sit inside, and kids run around screaming at the top of their lungs.

Still... when I come here, I want one simple thing. Their ice cream. It's amazing!! The cookies and cream helps satisfy my sweet tooth and makes me feel great afterwards . I heard that all their ice cream is homemade. I can believe it! This place definitely has their ingredients down cold (get it?! lol)

I'm lactose intolerant, and Bonnie Brae isn't something I should be eating. You know that great feeling I get afterwards? It doesn't last too long. This is one of the few places I don't mind going to, even if I know what it does to my stomach =[

I tried their Cashew ice cream and it was nasty.  I didn't realize you could possibly waste cashews by trying to make them into ice cream.  I was wrong.   You can't blame them for trying.

But, I had their triple chocolate death or whatever and that was some really good ice cream.  You really can't go wrong with a local place that makes their own ice cream.  Especially if you stick with chocolate.

But I don't see what the big deal is.  I have been living in Denver for 9 years and I've only been here once (on 5/18/2008) because I think it's one of the most unapproachable places in town.  It's just far enough from my house that I wouldn't walk, and there's nowhere to park.  If you are lucky enough to score a parking place, the line is usually pretty crazy.  Then, after all that, I try the Cashew ice cream?  Sucks to be me.  But if you're in the mood for some real ice cream it might be worth the effort of stopping in.

the ice cream is delicious, outdoor seating is great, and they have the "perfect size" mini scoops! If I want just a bite, and some cone, they've got it. If I want a full size monster, they've got that too. Great summer afternoon hangout.

Great ice cream flavors!  The lines get very long during the summer months but you will still see hardcore ice cream fans at Bonnie Brae in the winter too.  There maybe snow on the ground but the ice cream is well worth the trek through the snow, sleet, hail or blistering hot sun.  I love to get a scoop of pistachio!  Nom nom and lick lick... I love ice cream!

    Yummy!

Even though it was raining, there was a line out the door and people sitting outside enjoying their ice cream.

I had the Cappuccino Crunch and it was seriously so good.

The young staff seemed to accommodate all of the customers in a timely and efficient manner.

My motto: if it's good enough for Rudy Giuliani  , it's good enough for me.  So, maybe the whole of New York doesn't share that same mentality (certainly the sex industry there doesn't) but, nonetheless, it is just ice cream we're talking about here not political policy.

Anyways, drive south down University from the Cherry Creek mall, or, if you live in my 'hood, drive north from DU to Bonnie Brae. You'll see it.  Quaint little nieghborhood, a pizza place, a florist, a bar, and, of course, the ice cream.

Last time Rudy was in town, he stopped here.  The line is usually out the door and sometimes sneaks around the block.  Look for the big bear outside to greet ya and order anything--it's all good :)

Oh, plus, they have ice cream with liqour in it--yahoo!

This is my favorite Denver ice cream joint to date. Their handmade selections are delectable. It get's crowded at times making for parking nightmares and it is priced a little high keeping this creamery out of the 5 star rating it could attain. The small town, old-timey feel of this place also add to its charm.
