Has to be one of the better sandwiches I've had in a while. While I almost gave them 5 starzees, I am holding off until I go back as I've only been there once. My bro took me there for lunch. He works down the road and is a regular. The young lady behind the counter acknowledged him as such. She was very nice, super fast with tremendous memory skills. After giving my order, my bro rifled off his plus two others for his coworkers. She hardly flinched as he gave her a bunch of "holds" and "adds."
As for the sammich, it is huge. I could only eat half. Actually, I could eat the whole thing but my rules of engorgement are firm. They use a sun-dried tomato tapenade that adds a very nice kick. I ordered the "My Faovorite" which is roasted chix breast, pepper jack, and roasted peppers...w/dijon mustard on multi-grain roll. Although they have a wide variety of choices, I went with something semi-safe (no prosciutto, no bacon, no top sirloin!). I was very satisfied. I will definitely try another option next time. I'll probably starve myself all day so that I can actually order something dangerous (rule of engorgement #4) -

As far as sandwiches go Bonne Sante sits on top of the hill along with Ike's and Little Lucca's. The sandwiches are freakin huge here, and all the ingredients are of high quality and thoughtfully paired. Also as others have said before me. These sandwiches can easily feed 2 people but DONT DO IT! Get your own and share so you can try as many as you can.
Next on the to try list... The Burgers here at Bonne Sante look freaking amazing...
Enjoy! -

San Bruno, CA
Sandwiches are GOOD, I will give them credit there. BUT, service is BAD. The quality of the customer service provided is just as important as the quality of the food you serve.
I understand people have bad days, so I went back for a second opinion on the young, disrespectful girl that "served" us the first time. From one business owner to another, get rid of the girl who doesnt greet customers and has a horrible attitude which she makes very apparent.
I walked in today at 4:45 to the rude girl looking at us, then rolling her eyes and turning to her co-worker to obviously complain about last-minute customers. Granted it can be annoying while you're getting ready to clean/close up, it comes off much better if an employee would just inform us that they were nearing close time. The final straw came when she basically yelled at the customers in front of us, saying, "You Ready?"
I immediately left the place, and will not be back until i'm informed of her termination. -

My friend suggested we make a stop here before I dropped him off at SFO to catch a flight, since it's right of the burlingame/broadway exit, right after the airport (if you're going south on 101). We were running a bit late so we called in an order, a little bit last minute, and they had our sandwiches out and ready to go when we got there!!!
The first thing I noticed was the incredible value and size of the sandwiches!!!! One sandwich is like TWO sandwiches. My friend who is a big eater was glad to take half of mine off my hands - in fact I could barely finish the other half in one sitting! I got the Alaskan Salmon with Avocado. The salmon was nicely marinated & tender. The condiments weren't over-powering, you could really taste the salmon & avo as the main flavor. Some kind of aoili would've been awesome on it!!
It was definitely tasty, however the one big thing that was missing, that would've made it 10 times better, was that they didn't automatically toast the bread - not sure if they do that normally but didn't have time to for our order since we put a rush on it, or if you just have to specify. In the spirit of some other sandwich shops in the city who do the toasted-melted cheese thing on every sandwich, i guess i kinda got used to it! Again, though, awesome portion for the money - everything was in the $6-$9 range, 2 people can easily share! If I stop by again, I will ask them to toast the bread :))) -

I work down the street . I ordered a Blue Cheese burger for lunch and some onion rings to go . Got there the burger was sitting on the counter it took over 15 mins before the person ring me up . Then they didn't cook the onion rings . So I had to weight another 10 mins .
The burger was disturbingly massive, cold, uneatable. The staff was rude . One word answers . Like they didn't want to be there . Why even bother . I will never go there again. -
Review from Jess s.
Highly impressed! Their grilled crab cake sandwich was delicious!!! One sandwich was big enough to feed two hungry adults! For about $13 we got a grilled crab cake sandwich on soft french bread ( they had about four choices of bread to choose from, but we came right before they closed so the only choices left were soft french and wheat), sweet potato fries, and two drinks.
The sandwich took a little time to come out (probably because they had to grill the crab cakes), but it was well worth the wait! Topped with tartar sauce, the crab cakes were sweet & well done just the way i like it! Only complaint is the fact that the sandwich was a bit messy to eat. I guess crab cakes weren't really meant to go in sandwiches..one bite into the sandwich and the crab cake came crumbing down :( still nonetheless it was DELICIOUS!
The sweet potato fries (only $1.25 extra if you order a sandwich!) on the other hand, I would pass if I were to come again. The fries were crinkle cut which was possible the first time I've seen sweet potato fries this way and maybe the reason why the fries didn't seen right. I think the cut of the fries made it taste too starchy and made it lose the sweet potato taste. Not only that, but the fries came out a bit burnt as well.
Overall, I can see myself frequenting Bonne Sante more often especially since I work in the area now. -

I first started going here in 07 when i started working in burlingame.... It used to actually be good!
Now i feel they skimp on everything & take the cheapest route to everything... Quality on meats & bread has gone down ALOT... cheap napkins, cheap ketchup... under employed for how busy they are... the interior is BLAH & looks like its been meaning to be finished forever but all it has is a few aluminum tables & they removed the tv. they have even had the same plastic fruits in the deli display case too.
only thing on their mind is $$$ (which is ok. but show love & appreciation in your product & place)
If you want a great quality sandwich (not the best, but awesome)... go to little luccas & try their dutch crunch!!Listed in: Top Restaurants

San Anselmo, CA
Eric is a sandwich artist.
Along the old, car clogged artery of Burlingame known as Broadway lies an unassuming studio. The walls are barren except for a few shabbily frame posters and mismatched chairs and tables. At the rear stands a single line of solemn customers, queued up for the servicing of their request. As each one steps forward to take their turn, a handcrafted masterpiece of meat, cheese, condiments and bread is molded with pure creativity into a meal that steps above the blandness of so many lunches that have gone before.
Take heed, these are not Degas like castings of petite ballerinas that show up in every other sandwich shop you walk into around the world. These are Rodin like sculptures of voluptuous realism that must be conquered, sometimes in two sittings, to be enjoyed. And you will enjoy them.
This is not just lunch. It is a significant, life affirming meal that raises the eater above the blandness and suffering of everyday life. This is what a sandwich is meant to be. -

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!!! I caved in and got a sandwich from here after I vowed not to since they fail to put cucumbers on the veggie sandwich even though it's listed as a main ingredient. I was distracted by my toddler while my sandwich was being made and had full confidence in who I presume to be the owner making my sandwich. ( i was the only one in the store and there was NO one before or after me inline) Take cucumbers off the list if you don't want to add it or if it's to expensive don't mislead people into thinking they're getting one thing and sell them another. Lucky for me I had cucumbers at home.

Heard it, tried it, wasn't that impressed.
Like yelper Jen T. said below, when I heard it was like Little Lucca's I knew i probably wasn't going to love it.
I got the Hot Pastrami sandwich with swiss on a sweet roll, I was a little confused when they opened microwave and started warming up the meat. True, most the time you can't tell the difference, but when I discovered that my roll was still cold and soggy, I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I'm just used to my toasted sandwiches.
All in all, it wasn't jaw-dropping good or anything to rave about. It was just a-okay, nothing special or unique that you couldn't get at any other deli around town. -
Review from Chris D.
Love this sandwich shop. They're very generous in the sizes of their sandwiches and the ingredients are nice and fresh! They have a ton of diff options of sandwiches so sometimes you get stuck in figuring out which one you want to end up eating.
Cant wait to come back and try a new sandwich that i havent tried before! :) -
Review from Angela D.
San Jose, CA
This place is SO overrated! Perhaps the overall 4.5 stars is for the size of your sandwich given the cheap price. In terms of taste, I've had MUCH better! We ordered the meatball sandwich and the turkey/swiss/bacon both of which were very mediocre. I also tried the granola mango cookie that everyone seems to rave about. It would have tasted good but unfortunately it tasted as if it was baked a week ago. It was stale and chewy.
Also, service is everything to me. I ordered my sandwich w/o mustard & pickles. I watched her smother mustard on the bread and told her again that I didn't want mustard. So fine she apologized and got new bread. BUT when I brought my sandwich home, there was pickles in it. WTF!!@!#! Get it right!
Not a very good first impression. I would never come here again. -

I was planning on grabbing a early lunch with the GF before taking her to SFO and decided something light that won't weight down in your tummy.. Over 330+ reviews with an overall rating of 4.5?? I have to try it. Here's the break down of my experience:
Arrived at 10am hungry ready to chomp down on some Dutch crunch (yummy anywhere IMO) and was greeted with a warm "welcome". No line, looks like they had just opened. I was thinking "uh-oh" last nights buns, but to my surprise the dutch crunch was soo good it's 12:15am and am just craving some right now with some EVOO :).
Anyways not to get side tracked, I played it safe and ordered the honey ham on a Dutch crunch with all the fixin's. Grabbed a bag of chips and $8.45 later sat down and began to enjoy. Usually I don't like pickles in my sandwich, but enjoyed the sweetness from the ham, the special spread applied onto my sandwich was a delight (I'll have to find out what is in it). All the condiments tasted fresh, lettuce was crisp, and lots of meat!!! I would say it's roughly a foot long sub, and plenty for two to enjoy. Next time I'm in this area it'll have to be a place for me and I do recommend others to stop in and enjoy.
Service: 5 stars
Food: 4.5 stars
Environment: 5 stars
Cost: 5 stars

awesome awesome! Walk in at 12:30 ish. There was a line! Of course..
This time I ordered the Santa Fe. Roasted chicken breast, monterey jack cheese, a unique raspberry sauce to top it off. So interesting, mainly because I've never had a sandwich that has a sweet sauce with in. But it worked out very nice. I also had everything on it which includes lettuce, pickles, onions, mustard, mayo...YUM!
Walked out the door paying $8 for a gigantic sandwich. Split half with my mom. We were both stuffed!
The only downside, the chicken breast was a tad bit dry, just a little. I will probably try out honey ham, salami, or turkey next time I go.Listed in: Sandwiches anyone?

Way too big of sandwiches, it's a bit wasteful. I don't think anyone one person can actually eat this WHOLE thing. (without yacking).
THey have a good selection of breads and meats. Their service is lacking just a bit and they could be a witttle nicer. Since it's so busy and there usually is a line, they hurry to make your sandwich (a bit sloppy) then hurry to the next person to take their order. -

I have frequented Bonne Sante many times over the course of a year working in Burlingame. I've tried several sandwiches (the Hottie is my favorite, mmm spicy chicken strip) and salads (Cobb salad and Asian salad are my choices). The mango chocolate chip cookies and the onion rings are also quite good.
Good:
- The sandwiches and salads are huge! The first time I had a sandwich from here, I tried to finish the whole thing in one sitting. Bad idea. It's best to have half for lunch and half for dinner. Better yet make it lunch/dinner/breakfast tomorrow.
- They really put love into making your sandwich. When I watch my sandwich being made, it feels like they're making a piece of art, seriously.
- Their special sauce is pretty good.
- The amount food for the price (8 bucks for a sandwich) is great, as it's enough for two meals).
Bad:
- The bread is very average.
- Sometimes the line is pretty long and moves slowly. If you're in a rush to get food during peak lunch hours, I would advise calling ahead.
- Not much in the way of ambiance if you plan on eating in. I've only eaten in once or twice, and there are just a few tables to sit at. -

Burlingame, CA
I like getting the BLT+A Hamburger here. Very affordable--one sandwich is literally two meals. I normally avoid hard breads, but their dutch crunch is soft with just the right amount of crunch. They put an ENTIRE avocado into the sandwich. And their hamburger patty is shaped like an oval..!
The shop is very small, so I recommend taking your sandwich to go. -
Review from DJ N.

The sandwiches here are delicious!! I'm not a fan of going out for sandwiches that I think I can make at home, but this place changed my mind!
I especially like the Napa (Smoked Turkey with brie) and the Reuben. The crab cakes and the burgers are also very good.
Also, the sandwiches are fairly large. I usually eat one half and save the other for later.
Try this place out if you're into "fancy" sandwiches. They really hit the spot. -
Review from Stacey H.
Burlingame, CA
I came to this place for the first time because of the great reviews on yelp; however, it wasn't as great as I thought it would be. I had the hottie on dutch crunch. It wasn't that pleasing to see them microwaving the chicken in front of me; I would rather have not seen that because it showed me that the chicken wasn't fresh. It tasted like something I could easily order from a chain like Jack in the Box and it was almost more salty than it was spicy. The bread also wasn't fresh for it was very chewy and hard to bite through. I was quite disappointed because I am a fan of dutch crunch. Perhaps I'll give this place another try if I find myself on Broadway again, but Little Lucca's and Ike's Place will forever remain to be my favorite sandwich places.

Review from Elaine Y.
Decided to be adventurous and randomly looked for something on Yelp and tried it. Came here with my boyfriend, friend, and appetite. Everyone said the sandwiches here are gigantic and they were all right. It's about 15" and for about $9, that is way better than Subway or Quizno.
I got the Crabcake, boyfriend got the Hottie, and friend got the Cesar. The Crabcake was a tiny bit dry for me, if it has a bit more sauce, it would have been perfect. Because it was a bit on the dry side, I thought the bread was too thick too (wheat). The Hottie was super good, it was messy, but awesome messy. Every bite was a bite of explosion, literally and figuratively. There was a lot of flavor and I think I will order that next time. I didn't get to try the Cesar but according to my boyfriend who traded half of the sandwich with our friend, he said he never traded.
Overall, Hottie was the best out of the three sandwich. All orders on the menu are large servings so I think anything you order can be easily shared among two people. I'll return again.... -

San Francisco, CA
These guys put so much love in their food. :) I have been coming here at least once a month for at least 3 years now and I have yet to be let down. I am one of those people whose eyes are hungrier than their stomach and I always forget how big their portions are as I order items on the menu with reckless abandon every time I get food here.
The Good: So far, everything I've tasted from the multiple varieties of turkey sandwiches, the burgers, the selection of salads, down to their delicious mango-passion (passion-mango?) cookies have been utter delights. If asked, I couldn't tell you if I have a personal favorite because the sandwiches I order always fit just right with my mood. All portions - bursting at the seams - will leave nothing to be desired. They're not sheisty with their condiments either. It's clear that they don't want you to starve. The best part: VERY AFFORDABLE - You can buy a any sandwich on the menu for $7 - $10 and it's enough to feed 3 people.
The Bad: LONG lines during peak hours - lunch time mostly. And long lines are usually coupled with lack of parking and lack of eating space within the establishment. I would suggest going there early before the lunch crowd comes or call your order in so they can give you an estimate and you can just pick it up to avoid the long line. In terms of the food, burger aficionados might not appreciate that they do not cook the burger on a grill - but I still think they're pretty tasty.
In a nutshell, this is a great place to grab a good, love-filled sandwich on the cheap if you're broke with two of your friends. Or if you have time to wolf down a HUGE sandwich, this is the place for you! -
Review from Shannon B.
San Francisco, CA
Huge. Feeds 2 people. The vegetarian sandwich was a small baby, even bigger than most burritos for a mere $7.
Wheat bread, slathered with various things; including mayo, sun-dried tomatoes, two types of cheese, lettuce, pickles, a whole avocado, cucumbers, tons of diced red peppers.
The SF Bay Area offers an array of small, local owned sandwich shops and Bonne Sante or 'Healthy' offer a nice sandwich, not too dense on bread and heavy on the salad-like toppings.Listed in: Sandwiches

If you love Little Lucca, you'll go mad nuts over Bonne Sante. Bottom-line: the CLEAN version of Little Lucca.
My boyfriend has been raving about this place for months and months and has been dying to have me try it. I was definitely hesitant because when I go out to eat, I'm not exactly the type that would be ecstatic about getting sandwiches. But this time, I let him pick the place to eat and well, you know it, he picked Bonne Sante.
The place looks really plain so I was really skeptic about walking in, but I was nearly dragged in anyways. The menus are neatly laid out across the wall with plenty to choose from and there's also a stand of chips on the side. For Salt&Vinegar chip lovers like me, this is the place to get them! You can also cook to order, my boyfriend told me how he had literally gone in the kitchen to tell the cook how he wanted his salmon done - and they'll do it! Well, I'm a plain old-school sandwich person so I got a pastrami with everything except tomatoes on wheat. OOH MY GOD, YUM!
YOU GET: A giant sandwich that is packed with flavour that makes you so mind-blown that makes you crave more and more for days following. Yes, I have been craving for more everyday since I came in. I really love their special sauce which basically has sundried tomatoes and a light chili flavour. And that stuff that falls out of the sandwich literally turns into a salad, YAY!
They also have a pretty interesting salad selection, which I have yet to try. I SHALL BE BACK.
By the way, we made it just before the rush - a line that was about fifteen people long and growing. We had came in as about the fourth people waiting in line, and that was lucky. -

We were here on a Saturday afternoon minutes before they were about the close with all the chairs on the tables. They took our orders - a Turkey Breast and a Vegetarian Sandwich. It took them forever (like 10 minutes) to make them. We were not expecting much, but boy were we surprised. The sandwiches were super tasty and very generous in serving. Can't wait to stop by again!

When I walked in.. I was thinking to myself, "Ok, what should I order?" but when I saw the size of their bread... OMG!!!! I was blinded by the size of the damn thing that I wasn't focused on what to order.. on impulse I got the Hottie... 1/2 of the sandwich seemed like a full sandwich already.. everything tasted so well together.. I liked the abundance of onions and pickles that was put on my sandwich. I could feed 2 or 3 people w/ little over $8 because that was how much it cost me.
I was kicking myself in the ass for not finding out about this place sooner.. how could I have gone 28 years w/o Bonne Sante? I love sandwiches but most importantly, I love good sandwiches that are huge and cheap plus service was quite awesome! I told her I drove from San Jose to try this place out.. thank goodness Yelp.. oh what I would do w/o you..Listed in: Sandwiches, Burgers, and…

This place was a real nice find. I had the sorrento and my date had the rattler, both of which were delicious. They pack it with everything, so the sandwiches are huge, and cheap. Only thing keeping it from a 5 star, was the slow service, but we came here on the busiest time for lunch. If they had more people during the rush, it would be a perfect sandwich shop

Have eaten lunch here several times and have aways had a great experience. This is the best value for lunch you will find. My husband and I always share a sandwich and I usually can barely finish my half. I'm not a small eater. Seriously I don't know how they stay in business because the sandwiches are so large and the prices are so low.
There is usually a long line at noon on a weekday but it moves pretty quickly. The staff is friendly enough and the tables are clean. -

I cannot say enough good things about Bonne Sante. But that will not stop me from trying.
This is, without question, the finest sandwich shop I have ever patronized. The food is excellent, the portions are generous, and it is a great value.
First, the food. BS offers sandwiches (which are easily enough for two people to share), salads (also large portions) and burgers (the size of their sandwiches). Along with the "standard" deli sandwiches, they offer a menu of inventive sandwiches to ensure there is something interesting for everyone. Are you a "basics" guy? Just get a great pastrami sandwich. Vegetarian? There's the "Vegetarian." LIke spicy? You have two or three great options. Then there are several different options with just poultry (and when they say "chicken breast," by the way, you get a whole full double chicken breast on the one sandwich), with roast beef, etc.
I have not actually eaten a burger there, but after seeing one prepared before my sandwich, I am going for that next time. Like the sandwiches, they are served on a long roll. What I didn't realize is that they are also shaped to those rolls. They're big.
A big as the sandwiches are, you want to leave room to try the $1 side of potato salad. It's a little creamy and a little spicy. Try it!
All ingredients are fresh (they slice an avocado fresh for each sandwich, for instance), the burgers, chicken and fish (there's a great salmon sandwich, which I had today), are all grilled to order. Every sandwich is handmade while you wait, allowing you to include or not whatever you want or don't.
The only down-side to BS is that, since everything is grilled to order and everything's handmade, is that it's not speedy. If you are looking for a quick weekday lunch, this is not your place. It's so popular that during peek lunch hours the line can be 10-15 minutes, and then another 5 to have your sandwich made. It's worth the wait...as long as you are prepared for that wait!
There are a handful of tables -- I'm going to say about 6 or 7, and they turn over quickly. On nice days, a lot of folks eat their sandwiches on the benches that dot Broadway, so seating is usually pretty easy.
Although they don't advertise it much, Bonne Sante does a great job with casual catering. A couple years ago, we had them cater a lunch at our house. SInce the sandwiches are so large, it's relatively inexpensive to make up platters.
Next time you're in Burlingame at lunch time (only lunch time -- they aren't open in the evening), drop by. They're open seven days a week, and if I lived close by I'd be there at least one of them every week!
