Where else are you going to find a large selection of Indian Ice Cream? I'm a big fan of the Rose Flavor but generally I just enjoy the flavors and texture of the ice cream. It's a cross between homemade american ice cream and sorbet. With less sugar than the stuff we make here (Bi-rite - I'm not judging, I still love you too!).
Bonus - you can also get really good vegetable samosas here and they are adjacent to the Indian grocery store.
FYI - Cash Only
Simply the best, tastiest rose ice cream I ever had. Ah-mazing.
I have only been there once, it's sort of a hole in the wall but so is most of the Mission.
Thanks to my open-minded, far more cultured older brother, I have been introduced to a whole slew of impressive restaurants and bars in this neighborhood.
Encore!
Kind of dingy in here, but we were willing to brave that for some good ice cream. Unfortunately that didn't happen.
On the upside, they seem to now understand the "samples" thing, and so we readily were offered samples.
On the downside, the ice cream wasn't good. A. is from Bombay and so she knows these things. We came specifically for the Chiku ice cream.
She took one bite of the sample and said THAT'S NOT CHIKU. The poor guy working the counter at night didn't know what to say--he didn't know one way or another.
In any case A. says that Chiku ice cream tastes totally different. She tried the rose and said it wasn't good either, but the rose petals was OK.
Where can we find good Chiku ice cream in SF? Anyone?
Okay, you can drop some moolah on swanky BiRite Creamery stuff or Mitchell's or Humphry Slocombe and wait in line for dayyz orrr
You can walk into the always-empty and heavenly Bombay Ice Creamery. Their Rose flavor is great, but what I always die die die over is their Jasmine tea flavor. It's the best I've ever had...sweet, strong, earthy, with a tiny spicy Indian zing. Unf! But every flavor I've tried here has been delicious. Favorite ice cream in SF ftw.
I loved the chiku, saffron and sesame ice cream. This was kind of a seedy little hole in the wall, but I came for the ice cream, and I left with the ice cream. Happily.
This review is based off of having tried about 5 flavors, including honeydew, watermelon, pineapple sherbet, lynchee, and coconut pineapple. I love the honeydew and pineapple sherbet and the watermelon has a good flavor. The problem is the texture- I'm not sure how old the ice cream is, or if it's not frozen at a cold enough temperature, or what...but the ice cream is kinda grainy and melty. It should be colder- I like to be able to bite into my ice cream, if that makes any sense. Additionally, I don't understand why the small size can't have two flavors- in order to have two I had to order the 5 dollar size, which is way too big for me to eat without feeling a bit sick.
The man working there both times I've been in has been surly, but I can't really blame him since the place is like 1000 degrees on a hot day and depressing as hell.
Right. So first I have to say, when we walked up to the place the owners had just locked the doors and were about to walk away. Despite that, when they realized we had wanted ice cream, they didn't hesitate before reopening their doors for us.
Once inside we made small talk while ordering our flavors. We had a scoop of the strawberry mango which was pretty good but to be honest I can't wait to try the pistachio ice cream or kulfi. Which is the best part..they have such an eclectic assortment that you can't just come here once. I'll definitely be paying this place another visit. And if you know what's good for you, you will too.
If you have a taste for unique ice cream flavors, then definitely make it a thing to visit Bombay Ice Creamery. Sure they have your usual ice cream flavors, but if you're in the mood for rose, cardamon, jasmine green tea, or even saffron, then they have it. Of course, if you're in for savory, they also have Samosas and several different Puri's available. I recommend Bhel Puri.
Don't forget to visit the little market next door on your way out for more Indian goodies!
Was fun to come and try this place. Saw it on some food channel.
Been here twice and left with a "hey that was different".
As for anything I'd want to have over and over again....haven't had anything yet.
Place is infested with flies and was hot in there. Just a blaring fan. And a very uninterested person behind the counter. Could tell he really didn't want to give me samples.
I'm rooting for this place there. When the wife/owner was there the first time, she was great!!!
Also, have to love the family owned joints
Must try: Jasmine Tea, Rose Petal, Cardamom Rose and Sesame Seed
It's quite the experience although you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, the place seems a bit run-down and the signage hasn't been upkept.
Do come here and try their unique and exotic ice cream flavors. Ask questions if interested. It'll help engage the owner in small talk and might even scoop more than you bargained for.
Bring cash and don't expect too much when you visit Bombay. That's what's up!
I've been meaning to go here for MONTHS but always just walked by it in the past. Wow, impressive selection and many options. At least 1/3 were exotic ice cream flavors, many with Indian roots. I got a scoop of mango rose and a scoop of cherry vanilla. The mango rose was so beautifully colored and the flavor was euphoric. It was super sweet and super tasty!!!!!!!!! And being an ultimate cherry ice cream fan, I was digging their cherry vanilla. A good amount of cherries, simple but satisfying. They give a good portion, enough to share if you're kind like me. And for $4.95 for that, it was a worthy deal.
Overall, it's a nice little hole-in-the-wall to get some fun flavored ice cream in the Mission. I'll return next time after a Frjtz run!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! This place was terrible?!
Do they have such a high rating on yelp cause the reviews are old?! I read a few saying they were on the Food Network on the show 'unwrapped'. How long ago was that?!?!?! Are they paying to Yelp to keep their ranking?!
I didn't even try their ice cream. I really wanted to as well. But the exterior of the building was falling apart. Proof in the signage missing a letter. The floor was sticky and not sure when the counters were last wiped. The interior is dingy.
If you are serving food, the food area should be clean. If you are serving dairy products, a.k.a. food poisoning waiting to happen, the place has to be super clean. There is a reason why the temperature of all milk products are highly regulated and that the cleanliness of the area in which they are housed and made has to be uber clean.
This place was not. I'm not risking a week of bombay belly for a scoop of ice cream! Especially when I'm not even in India.
Thank fully Xanath has opened a few blocks down the street. They are new but growing a really nice list of ice creams. At least now there is another ice cream option within walking distance.

I went to this place after seeing it on some TV show.
The interior is SCARY ...they need HELP BADLY.
I ordered Falooda & even though it tasted good the "PLASTIC CUP" was unacceptable for a drink/ dessert that cost $5.00...come one folks a milk shake glass is NOT THAT EXPENSIVE .
Then I got the Pani Puire * this is Indian STREET vendor food in India & its usually full of flavor & spices...this was at best BLAND .
the seating area felt like an after thought to the whole place & would not recommend staying in there to enjoy your dessert .
They also DO NOT take debit or Credit cards & make you use their over priced ATM machine $3.00 for a single transaction, guess thats how they make the extra $$$.
I will be having my Falooda to GO with my OWN to GO CUP.
I went here with two buds. My bud, L, is a big fan of this place.
My two buds ordered the cardamom and were in Heaven---their eyes were glazed over.
I was not feeling too adventurous so I got a scoop of chocolate--it was just okay, nothing special.
Service was friendly. Ambiance kinda Third Worldish but I am right at home in a place like this.
Scoops are smallish.
Bombay Ice Creamery smells like armpit inside, but their ice cream is really, really good! They have so many odd flavors, such as Cashew Raisin, Chai Indian Tea, Ginger, Rose, Lychee, Fig, and also mixtures such as Bedam Kesar Pista (almond/saffron/pistachio). What I like best about Bombay, is that their ice cream tastes exactly like what they're called. The Chai tasted like frozen tea with milk and was very delicious! The same goes for Green Tea and Lychee. I also tried their Cookies and Cream which was just as good as Baskin Robbins. Another flavor that is my all-time favorite is Coffee; you can never go wrong with Coffee.
The two guys who work here are very friendly. They don't mind letting you sample their flavors as long as it isn't busy, or in my case, as long as its not too late. I believe we came in at around midnight! But man A+ for staying open late! I have yet to try their milkshakes the next time I have dindin at Cha Cha Cha's nearby. Yaaaay for Bombay!
I heard that this place had good kulfi, so I went in and found that all the kulfi that they had was pre-packaged. Majorly disappointed. I asked for a taste of the chiku ice cream and got a few tiny specks of blah ice cream on a spoon. Disappointed again.
I decided that I didn't want to try any more flavors, since I couldn't justify paying $3 for a portion of ice cream that was about the size of three apricots (or large grapes/human eyeballs/whatever). As I was about to head out, however, a woman came in to get 8 samosas. I was intrigued, and, noting that each samosa only cost $1.50, picked one up for myself. It was huge, slightly tangy, and not too spicy (to my dismay). It was okay, but would have been much better if it weren't cold and soggy.
Verdict: Not impressed. At all.
My mom just got me this really good smelling rose shower gel so I was dying to taste the rose ice cream. It tasted just like my shower smelled. I also had the sesame ice cream which was a little weak compared to all the sesame dessert soups I've had before. The rose petal ice cream actually had dried rose petals in it, but the ice cream itself was also a little too weak. The star wars flavor looked out of this world, but we saw through its deception after a taste for it was just vanilla with marshmallows. Too bad. It was also too bad that we went on a day that they ran out of chai ice cream, but at least now I know that the flavors on their website are not all inclusive! They have way more flavors than what is listed.
There are 3 different lassi ice cream flavors:
salted lassi
sweet lassi
mango lassi
There are also 3 or 4 different rose ice cream flavors:
rose
rose petal
cardamom rose
saffron rose
I know my choices for next time:
honeydew + lychee
OR
chai + kesar + bedam
The guy who served my ice cream either needed to wear a glove or cut his nails. I'm just glad I did not get a cone. Good thing he gave me huge scoops, so huge that I was very afraid. I finished though! Another guy served my friend and he got smaller scoops, but obliged to give more when my friend pointed out my order. You have to speak up to get what you want boy!
A minus for vacuuming right next to us.
This has happened one too many times for me.
A minus for ice cream that was too soft and melty. It should've been more frozen, especially with me being a slow eater.
I have an embarrassing secret--actually two: I am allergic to dairy (Yes, I am lactose-intolerant), and whenever I eat Indian food, I get sick--like "I have to RUN to the bathroom" sick.
Yesterday, I committed two mortal sins: I ate a scoop of Cardamom Rose ice cream at Bombay Ice Creamery, and I ordered their lunch plate complete with a cup of really yummy yogurt for dipping.
I thought I was being wickedly strategic when I I thought I cleared all my meetings for the day so that I could just enjoy my Indian food and I could just make my trips to the bathroom all afternoon. I just really wanted to get a lunch plate at Bombay which I have been eyeing for months but just could not get the courage to suffer the stomach upset that I was very sure would soon follow. (I am going to keep this review not so graphic.)
So, I placed my order for lunch but the nice young Indian guy who was helping me was taking forever. He said they ran out of rice to go with my meal and he offered to give me two naans instead.
I was waiting and waiting while he was preparing my order.....then I started smelling something burnt. He burned my naan bread. One of the store matriarchs came to his rescue and started to cook my naan in oil and BUTTER! They were having cooking lessons while I was waiting. That's when I decided to check out their 53 flavors of ice cream. Some of them were so exotic that it was hard to not try: CARDAMOM-ROSE, ROSE, CHAI, MANGO, FIG, SAFFRON, etc.
I opted for the cardamom-rose which was so exotic and delicious--strong but balanced flavors of cardamom pods and the sensual taste of rose petals. I ate it while waiting for my order and enjoyed every minute of it.
I finished my ice cream and the two were still having their cooking lesson. Finally, the nice woman said that she gave me two naans stuffed with peas with a cup of fresh yogurt for dipping.
When I got back to my office I found out that instead of two dishes they gave me three: potato curry, chicken curry and peas with cheese. Thinking everything was fine and dandy, I ate my Indian food without any worries, savoring each spicy bite of curry and being generous on the fresh yogurt UNTIL.....
My cellphone rang, "Hi Leah, so just confirming that you will give your presentation in 5 minutes?"
My heart started to beat fast, I started sweating bullets and I started praying, "Dear Lord, please do not embarrass me in front of my colleagues"
In the end, I gave a good presentation with not one trip to the bathroom or gurgling stomach or an escaped gas. How did I do it? Aside from praying, I took half a pill of anti-diarrhea medicine and a strip of Gas-X superstrength.
Believe me, they work and you should not leave home without them.

Bombay Ice Creamery is a mom and pop part ice cream shop/part store selling Indian merchandise. The ice cream shop also sells Indian lunch plates, chaats (street food snacks)including samosas and chai tea.
The food I've had were delicious and I would assume that they are close to authentic since the place is owned by Indian people. The chai tea is as real as you can get--strong, sweet and milky.
They have little round tables at the store where you can eat your food.
$6.95 for a lunch plate with 2 entrees, rice and naan.
$3.00 for a scoop of ice cream.
Seriously, rose ice cream? Green tea ice cream? coconut? cardamon?
I'm in love. That's what's up!
I can't personally speak to all of the 56-odd flavors, but the two I had (cookies and cream; mocha almond fudge) were only slightly less than fantastic. True-to-name, they are exceptionally creamy and rich treats and musts for searing mission summer days.
Yet what makes BIC a four-star establishment is the sheer breadth of their iced repertoire and the uniqueness of its flavors. Rose, jasmine and the varietals of lassi (mango, sweet, salty) are among those that you likely won't find at your local Walgreens.
I have to take a star off Bombay Ice Creamery for the ridiculous service. We went in today for father's day with our family. First of all, the guy at the counter kept rushing us for no reason (we were the only people in there). He then gave us all kinds of shit because we wanted to try the different flavors (like one per person). He told us that "If a group of Americans comes in" then they would want to try many flavors and he wasn't having any of that.
Dude. You work in an ice cream shop. OF COURSE people will want to sample the flavors, especially when you offer unusual ones. Also, YOU WORK IN AN ICE CREAM SHOP. You should at least pretend to be happy.
They were also out of kulfi and chai ice cream. Boo.

Chai ice cream + coffee ice cream = multicultilicious.

OMG. The flavors are woooow. ON POINT! Definitely hits the spot. I went with my Dad to this place. He ordered Lychee and I ordered Starwar. My conversation with the worker went something like this:
Worker: Hi, what would you like?
Me: Uhm, is the Starwar good?
Worker: Yes, it is! But I see children ordering that most of the time.
Me: Well, I'll get a scoop of that please. I'm still a kid ;D
$3 a scoop, ~$4.25 double. Pretty pricey, but definitely worth it with a waffle cone. Yummmmmmm...!
I was curious to try Bombay Ice Creamery's unconventional flavors - i.e., cardamom.
However, I would not recommend this place b/c:
- expensive: tiny single scoop is $3, double is $5
- not tasty: the two samples I tried (coconut pineapple and watermelon) both made me thirsty
- RUDE: server was aggressive and pushy, reluctantly gave samples, and shook his head in disgust when my friend decided she didnt want to order one of their pricey, small, unappetizing scoops.
I'd suggest going to Bi-Rite 3 blocks away instead.
Dude, seriously. So we went in there to get a pint, and asked for a taste of the fig and the cardamom rose. He accidentally gives us a taste of the cardamom instead of the cardamom rose, and then is like, okay, here's the cardamom rose. Okay, cool, how about the fig? Sorry, he says, no deal. Only two tastes.
Serious? You fucked it up, not us, we're buying a pint, and you're not going to give us a taste? Never again.
Smells weird in there anyway.
I'm such a fob, I mean seriously such a fob. My mom actually pointed this place out to me when she was visiting and said we had to get ice cream from here after dinner.
So we did, here's what the 4 of us got: Rose petal ice cream, tutti frutti, pistachio and chai. All of them were fabulous!
Maybe I'm just super uber happy that there's an indian ice cream place in SF. Makes me nostalgic for the motherland.
Cardamom Rosa. Interesting, spicy flavor not often found at ice cream places. The only reason worth coming here.
The ice cream was really quite good, but the rest of the transaction was kind of miserable. The actual shop looks like it was transported, in its entirety, from Bombay (or Mumbai as it is now called, I guess). I would be fine with that if the prices were also Third World. But they aren't, they are $3 for a scoop.
Ok, fine, I can handle that for gourmet ice cream in strange flavors. But wait, I can only have two tastes? Between two people? Really? I mean, that is ridiculous, these are bizarre flavors, let me try a few if I want to, I'm not going to destroy your bottom line with a few pea sized spoons of ice cream.
So the food is fine, but the service and ambiance sucks.
I'm lactose intolerant but that didn't stop me from having a double of scoop of ice cream. It's always special when you're with a loved one as well, for sure!
I had a scoop of Rose and a scoop of my all time fave - mint chocolate chip! YUMMY! Obviously, mint chocolate chip is old faithful to me. I could have the worst day in the world but have a scoop of mint chocolate chip and all my problems seem to melt away (pun intended).
Yet, the scoop of Rose ice cream was one of the most awesome tastes ever. Eating a beloved flower in ice cream form? Possible? Yes, it is, my friends. Even though my stomach was paying the price as I raced home (TMI - who cares), I had a grimaced smile on my face. Then, again, it's probably the masochistic side knowingly consuming something so divine that sent my intestines into a tizzy. Okay, this is not going very well due to my adeptness at tangential points (i.e., my digestive system).
My point: Bombay Ice Creamery is worth the tummy ache!
Scrooge-y. Mean. Dirty.
While my friends were across the street buying booze for a night out on the town, the dedicated ice cream lover in me chose to adventure to Bombay Ice Creamery in hopes of heavenly pleasures.
Incorrectly used fluorescent(?) lighting gives this place an uninviting chill and the evil man behind the counter makes it down right frigid.
Me: Can I try the Cashew Raisin and the Falooda?
Dr. Evil: Sure - *gives both samples on ONE spoon* ???
Me: "What's Chiri?"
- can't taste much, portions are microscopic and blended*
Dr. Evil: "A fruit"
Me: "May I try?"
Dr. Evil: "You can only have two samples"
Me: ...
Proceed to see that a tiny scoop is $3. Miss Indecisive starts panicking.
Dr. Evil: *notices hesitation* "I'll give you another sample, but you have to buy it"
Me: O.O "uhhh, i think i'll pass!"
Call me Miss Humphry Spoiled, but I can get BETTER QUALITY, BETTER SERVICE, and ALL the samples I want for less $$. Sorry Bombay Evil Man, maybe Jiminy Cricket will help you warm your heart this Christmas and you'll discover the power of ice cream love!!!
Okay wow, I'm not really sure where to begin except that I am very surprised at the high ratings. We drove to this address, forgetting that it was in the Mission District, and then wondering why it was so ghetto all around. Even the "Bombay Ice Creamery" signage was missing an original letter.
I didn't expect it to look as unassuming as it did. We walk into this ice cream shop that looks like it could've been in India and the guy said he'd be right with us. I didn't read reviews beforehand so I wasn't sure what flavor to get. I asked him what the most popular one was and he answered with "Cardamom Rose". I looked into that bucket to see that it was 90% empty so I took it as a good sign. It tasted as I imagined since I've had both separately flavored cardamom and rose food items. I imagine that you should like both items but it tasted pleasantly nutty and flowery.
For $3, it's not really worth it--he literally gives one scoop, no more and no less. He doesn't stuff the cup or top it off with extra. Even though we told him that we would just be sharing this item, he kept asking if we wanted anything else. Yea this place does offer flavors unavailable elsewhere but... the overall appeal doesn't warrant a return visit.
On an extremely HOT afternoon, I stopped by Bombay on the recommendation of some patrons at work. They have a pretty impressive array of flavors ranging from traditional to more 'ethnically' exotic, although they were out of many flavors (on account of the heat, I'm sure). I chose a triple scoop (b/c that's how this fat gurl rolls) of lychee, rose cardamom, and cashew raisin.
I think it's fair to say that the ice cream at Bombay is scented or perfumed, rather than flavored in the classic sense of the word (at least the stuff I tried). Everything I tried had a vanilla base with subtle hints of flavor in the finish. I subscribe to an all-or-nothing mind set when it comes to food (especially ice cream), in that I love it when my senses are assaulted... so I found the flavors at Bombay to be a bit sub par. But considering the alternative was Bi-Rite Creamery with a line that literally spans several blocks, I'd certainly return in the future. The portions are significantly larger than Bi Rite's and I'm still curious about the almond saffron pistachio flavor.
The staff was a little frantic and mechanical, but it was busy, so I'll forgive them. For now, I'll stick with Humphrey's.
The ice cream is only mediocre, but I gave this place a bad review because of the VERY bad service I received...here's a sample:
First of all, the place is run by FOAB Indians...I have a lot of friends who are from India and I know they are upstanding people, but if you're going to work in a ice cream place in the US, run it like an ice cream place in the US...
The attendant at the counter was not very friendly toward my girlfriend or I and when I go to an ice cream shop, I like to sample till I find the flavor I like (don't we all?)...so I ask for samples, and every time I ask (3 times total), the attendant gives me dirty looks and snarls, and then the SMALLEST sample ever on the REGULAR sized spoons...even Baskin Robbins puts more sample on their tiny spoon!
I asked him what his favorite flavor was and, with trepidation, he replied "Charmiddon" or something similar...I ask for a sample, receive one with trepidation, and reply "wow thats really good"...I notice the attendant reach to scoop the ice cream when I reply "don't scoop it yet, I haven't made up my mind..." Ignoring me, he proceeded to scoop the ice cream into a cup...then, when I later said I changed my mind and would like another flavor, he replies "sorry, I already scooped it"...WTF!! It was one scoop! You mean you can't put it back? Really?
Overall, it isn't worth it...I'd rather have the overzealous joy and unlimited samples of a cold stone or pink berry employee over this crap any day...
BTW side note, after sharing my story with the girl who was running the "candy shop" clothing store down the street, she recommended Bi-Rite and it was great...salted carmel, have to try it at least once in your life :)
They have really odd flavors which is why I was intrigued. The guy behind the counter recommended a few popular flavors and when I decided on one, he asked which other I wanted. I figured it was like 2 flavors for a single scoop but it was actually double....he tricked me!....I should never assume.
We ended up being stuck with Coconut Pineapple and Cashew Raisin for one and Jasmine Tea and Cardamom for the second. Quality nor flavor deserves another round.
Ice cream, as any dessert lover knows, goes into a separate stomach. So no matter how full you may be, there is always room for ice cream. My ice cream spot of choice in the Mission (or anywhere in the city, really) is Bi-rite. Joe's Ice Cream in the richmond is also 5 star in my yelp book. But because we were pretty close to Bombay Ice Creamery and because I haven't been there before, I decided to try it out.
One thing you'll immediately notice here is the selection. They've got your usual favorites( and flavors that get you excited about going to a ice cream shop vs your neighborhood safeway). You think that this could be your new ice cream go-to place, but little do you know.
Being able to sample one or two flavors at an ice cream shop should be as much of an expectation as Starbucks giving you milk for your coffee. At Bombay Ice Creamery, however, asking for a sample seems to offend the person behind the counter. I mean, could you have been any more unwilling? No bien.
$3 for a single small scoop. The taste was actually not bad, but the scoop seemed to be half air. I prefer my ice cream to be more dense. Felt a bit ripped off, but paying $3 for a lesson learned isn't the worst thing that I've done, I suppose.
I'm sorry for the 2 stars, but I'm glad other people seem to like it. Just means shorter lines for me at Bi-rite.
Okay, our bad -- we came here really late, just before closing so maybe the guy there was kind of annoyed with us. Anyhow, they have a lot of flavours, some I know and some that were completely new to me so naturally knowing that I am going to buy, I at least want to sample. Well, it turns out you can only sample two and had I been aware of that I probably would have opted for the ones that were totally new to me. Anyhow, I sampled the Chiku and Masala Tea and settled for those two whereas Gabe had the sesame seed. All three were pretty good, though I preferred the lighter blends of chiku (which is sapodilla) and masala tea to end the night.
We sat outside the store to finish up our ice creams while the guy was cleaning inside. For the life of us we couldn't figure out why for someone that was rushing to get us out wasn't taking in the chairs or closing the door (at least I was wondering that anyway).
So the short of the long: Nice flavours and pretty good servings though not that great at sampling so you will likely be making more trips to get them all figured out. Try to not go late at night. They did sample both on the same spoon so make of that what you will. Kind of pricey ice cream... but I would likely come back out of curiosity regarding those other flavours.
I must have caught them on a very good day.
The young gentleman serving the ice cream was very friendly and friends & I all decided to buy two scoops of the delicious, creamy flavors each instead of one. He's a great salesman.
We tried Chiri, Rose, Cardamom, Sesame, Chai, Pistachio and a few others that slip my mind.
What stood out was that the ice ream was very fresh with a creamy delicious consistency and a nice melt to it.
Eat inside, if you can (or take to go), because there's a often a rank odor coming from the gutters in the Mission. If you eat on the street, you will NOT appreciate the delicate flavors of the ice cream!!!!!
I ran into this place by accident because I was traveling the opposite direction down Valencia to find Buffalo Exchange. I decided to stop because a friend had recommended the place.
My boyfriend got the jasmine tea, honeydew melon, and lychee fruit flavors all in one medium cup. I wanted to try either the rose or rose cardamom, but they were out, so I went for the falooda. Not only was the flavor AMAZING, but texture is top notch with the frozen tapioca and vermicelli.
I plan on taking most of my out-of-town guests here to show them how awesome a place like the Mission is.
Friendly Owner, Minus One Star for the plastic throw away spoon!
Try the Chicka (sp) tropical fruit...
I highly recommend going in Bombay and choosing a flavor that wouldn't necessarily top your list. If something sounds bizarre to you, consider a scoop! I've done this a few times here and tried some really interesting (and good!) flavors; it's a nice departure from the usual chocolate or vanilla dilemma. Disclaimer: you should probably ask to sample a new flavor before you commit entirely. The prices are on the steeper side in my opinion, so it would be a shame to get something you really couldn't stand.
I do think the folks behind the counter could enhance the Bombay experience by being a little more accommodating, maybe even try a smile, but hey- I'm not the one in the Indian ice cream biz, now am I?
The rose ice cream is lovely and unique. Even better however was my housemate's pistachio almond. I liked that one a lot and I imagine it's getting less hype from all us yelpers. I would recommend trying a sample of the rose, just for the novelty, and actually investing in a cup of the pistachio almond.
It is a bit pricey considering the decidedly unamerican sized portion. I also wasn't a huge fan of the disorganized service, but the guy behind the counter was generous with samples, if perhaps slightly slow on the uptake.
Exotic. Reminiscent. Intoxicating.
Even if you don't want ice cream, just go in here next time you pass by and take a peak. Or even try a sample, with menu items like tuti fruit, gulkland, falooda, etc, it will guarantee to peak any ice-cream enthusiast interest.
The falooda was great! It quickly transported from the dismal SF winter to a budding rose garden in Berkeley. I thought I was walking through a park, holding hands with my first love while she imprints sweet syrupy kisses of vermicelli and tapioca. Although it wasn't very creamy, it would get a five star if the quality is better.
Bottom Line: Unique place to drop in for a different taste of ice cream.
