Long Beach, CA
This is a premier place for bird photography in the socal area. Always an interesting number of photo ops with a mixture of ducks, herons, hawks, and other species. So if you have a telephoto lens this a great place to use it. There are a number of regulars here and i've seen some real winners like one photo was of a hawk with a halibut in its talons

This is an absolutely beautiful place to come to, walk, fish, swim (yes we saw a guy jump in) and just all around relax.
Fishing: Only permitted in certain areas, and there is a bait shop right on the corner you can use. We caught 3 yellowfin croakers, all about 8-10 inches, on shrimp, in about a 1/2 hour.
Walking: Great paths that go through the marshy area and around the water. Beautiful birds and wildlife... Which is nice considering you can hear people drinking and partying on the beach only a few hundred yards away.
Weather: I mean its beach / So-Cal weather, what more do you need!
Dogs: No dogs on the paths... Sorry
All around a nice place to visit, LEARN about nature, relax and just be outside. I will be coming back here for fishing for sure! -

A leisurely stroll through Bolsa Chica wetlands can be very relaxing on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Being so close to Huntington Beach, you can feel the cool sea breeze as you meander through the yellow dirt path that seems to lead to no where, as I never did get to the end of it, but does take you through all the loveliness that is this place. You'll see little boys with their dads and grandfathers, casting their lines into what looks like a stream passing under Warner Ave. Bird-watchers and nature-loving photographers are seen with their binoculars and high-tech camera equipment, catching glimpses and taking pictures of feathery friends. While loons, grebes, and sparrows sore overhead, squirrels and lizards can sometimes be seen scurrying about in the dirt. And although Bolsa Chica is entirely a wetland, you'll still catch sight of a desert-like flower every now and then.
Before you start your walk, be sure to stop by the Interpretive Center, the one that looks like a mobile home in the parking lot, and grab a pamphlet to help you identify all the possible things you might see on your walk. I believe you can also participate in group tours where a guide will walk around with you and the group and give you the history of the conservancy and what they do there. All in all, very neat!
Oh! No bike riding nor dog walking allowed. -

I didn't think this was sublime so I passed on taking photographs. I went here for a biology class field trip so we had the group interpretive tour. It would be relaxing if I didn't have to analyze the ecology and observe the wildlife. Maybe I would have been more interested if I was looking at this through binoculars. This would probably appeal most to bird-watchers because that's a subject I take for granted.

Helped out here with Coastkeepers on snapshot day. They have a wonderful wetlands project. Take the kids for a walk around the wetlands. No dogs allowed. They also have a little museum inside, with fish tanks and other wildlife. Don't park here for the beach, or across the street. They ticket. There is approximate 10 parking spots, and it's for the ecological reserve. Other than that, it's awesome!
