11 reviews for Bok Choy Cafe
My family has trusted Bok Choy Cafe for numerous events. They never fail to deliver service promptly and with a smile. I agree with my other fellow Yelpers about the poor location. They have specialties like longanisa, ribs, and orange chicken. The prize winning dish is and always will be the Honey Walnut shrimp. These jumbo shrimp are dunked in a mochi mixture, deep fried, mixed with something like mayo and honey. Then the whole thing is topped with walnuts to give it that soft crunchy texture. They also have a medium sized bar with non-alcoholic/alcoholic beverages.
The decor is cute and simple. They have a lounge area where the children of our family went to go play after brunch. They let you host private events and I have only been there for these events. I suggest you and you family rent this hidden treasure chest for your next wedding rehearsal lunch, Christening, birthdays, graduation parties, etc.
THE GOOD: Went to Bok Choy with my sister, who does Chi-Town Dinearies (look it up on youtube or my facebook if you know me), since we saw some coupons in the clipper for a all you can eat brunch special for $9.95. Now I am sick of the New China Buffet/Royal Buffet scene since we go there for every Filipino event in the West/Southwest suburbs. If you're sick of it too on Sundays, this is a good alternative to go to. First off, the Walnut shrimp and the Hawaiian fried rice are straight up awesome. Highly recommended and I say get like 3 dishes of each if you go. The set up on how food is served is different. We initially thought it would be a buffet style set up, but instead, dishes are served individually in courses. You get your choice of a soup, a salad, and an appetizer even before entrees come. Then for entrees, 2-3 dishes are ordered from a list of about 16-18 and only replenished when the initial plates are finished. After that, you even get dessert and another high recommendation goes to the cheesecake with green tea lime sauce. Service was prompt but it wasn't that busy.
THE BAD: All the other dishes were average to below average. The only things that kept me from giving 2 stars were the 3 dishes and the service listed above. I'm a big fan of chow fuun and theirs was very average. Also had the teriyaki chicken and asparagus in garlic sauce which were both bland but still had a strange taste to them. The "Firecracker shrimp" is shrimp, cream cheese, and jalapenos wrapped in an eggroll wrap and deep fried. It honestly tasted like i just had cream cheese stuffed in my face for the amount the put in a roll as big as my pinky. The place is in a location that makes it hard to spot or for out of towners to want to go into. It's in a very rundown strip mall that has seen the likes of Eagle Market and I think Dominick's go down the drain there. Now this time it's Westbrook and so far they look like they're doing well enough to stay afloat. The other places are a dance studio, a Mobil, a seedy pool hall, and a pretty good Indian place called Sher-a-Punjab. Someone has to clean the place up. Also to make things worse, the place is on a deep angle that can only really be seen if you are going east on 63rd St. So look carefully when you try to find the place.
THE UGLY: This spot is reserved for 1 dish: the chicken pad thai. What a crapfest in my mouth when I tried it. Pretty much if you like Warheads and Sour Patch Kids with soy sauce, you would love this dish. Who in the hell thinks this is enjoyable to eat? This crazy lookin chick in the table next to us was eating it. I just wanted to stop her and direct her to a thai restaurant for better pad thai. I really hope she didn't think this was how it was supposed to taste because if she knew, she would have stopped at the 2nd chew. My sister's face was priceless when she took a bite. It looked like she took a wiff of the worst fart. Those farts that smell bad even when you're outside.
So yeah, I'll come back since other yelpers put out some dishes that I like too and want to try (i.e. Shrimp and lobster sauce, Gen Tso's chicken). I will just stay away from the misses that I've already tried.
I love it here. From the street it looks like a hole in the wall, but the interior of the restaurant is very nice and decorated in a modern vibe. The service is fast, the food is very good, and the prices are reasonable. I love the shrimp and chicken fried rice and the kung pao chicken. They also have a mongolian beef soup that is excellent. I highly recommend this place.
I tried to give Bok Choy NO stars but Yelp won't let me. I have never in my life brought back food to a restaurant, until I ate at Bok Choy. The food was gross! The Chicken was slippery and quite scary looking. The teriyaki chicken was more like a soup and had very little taste. The taste that it did have was not even near a decent teriyaki flavor. Though the sauce of the honey walnut shrimp wasn't bad the shrimp itself tasted fishy, which anyone who knows decent seafood, fresh fish shouldn't taste like fish! the worst part of the whole thing was when I returned the food, the owner was condescending and rude and flat out told me " he did not want my business." I did not not understand how a business owner could act this way. Perhaps he has found a way to rise above this horrible economy and has plenty of business and doesn't honestly need my money. I know this is not the case since as I was in there returning my food another customer came in to return her food!! The only good thing about this establishment was the delivery boy. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO ANY ONE WHO HAS TASTE BUDS. IN FACT I WILL BE SURE THAT PEOPLE I KNOW DO NOT PUT THEMSELVES THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE OF BOK CHOY.
purely for the the attitude of the owner.
I too received their menus in the mail (apparently direct mail works SOMETIMES). Their location, well, it kinda stinks. It's buried in the corner of a strip mall that is otherwise somewhat desolate.
Other than that, I thought the food was very good. I am on a mission to find the best General Tso's chicken, and this one ranks up there. It wasn't spicy at all, and I usually like a little kick to my Tso's chicken, I guess next time I'll have to have them kick it up a notch.
Their menu is more extensive than the typical Chinese food menu, they have a few Japanese dishes as well as some Thai.
There are a few other Chinese places in DG, also a few that are much closer to me, but I will definitely go back to Bok Choy soon!
I first checked this place out because they sent me a flyer in the mail.
It's obvious they know someone in graphic design or photography. The flyer and the menu have that "homemade professional" look.
This place is nice inside, but done on the Ikea budget. (Many things are from Ikea, I noticed.)
That's just fine with me, I came for the food anyways, and wasn't disappointed.
Nestled in the strip mall on 63rd Street, I think Bok Choy's location doesn't do it justice. The place is nearly empty everytime I go to eat there, and I hope they do a lot of takeout business because I want this place to hang in there, it's that good and the wait staff is that friendly.
The Honey Walnut Shrimp is extremely good. I would highly recommend it. The Mongolian Beef is also very good.
They have a bar and wine choices to boot, and as said in other reviews, prices are very cheap for lunch.
I would give this place a try if you want a quietly elegant place for some nice Chinese Food. They even play nice dinner music, which I enjoy.
Grab a flyer on your way out for coupons.
By far, one of the cleanest Chinese restaurants I have ever been to. No long waits, you are able to sit within moments of entering. The menu has plenty to offer, it actually does not just serve Chinese food, but as well popular Thai, Japanese, and Filipino dishes.
The service was efficient, and the food was delicious! I suggest the Crab Crisp Rolls (think Crab Rangoon in the form of an egg roll), and as an entree the Honey Glaze Walnut Shrimp.
I have also attended special events held in the restaurants such as birthdays and graduations. The staff is great with handling these occasions.
Added bonus-if you prefer to carry-out or have food delivered, you can order online, pretty neat if you ask me.

I first tried this a take out/delivery and was very happy with the service, the driver showed up quickly, food was hot and it tasted good. I then saw the restaraunt had a web site and there is a10% discount if you order off the web--cool!
I decide to have lunch at the cafe. The dining area is very nice, minimalist, open space with Chinese art/sculptures around the room. Its very friendly and inviting. And....they offer free wi-fi! Now, it may be difficult to yelp and eat, but if someone was having a luncheon meeting, it would work well.
The food is great! I have had the shrimp in garlic sauce, crab rangoons, a couple of other spicy entrees and all were very satisfying and very large servings. I ordered one of the lunch specials(Thai Basil Shrimp) and really liked it. All lunch specials are under $6 and include an egg roll(or spring roll), and either white or fried rice. The only item I don't really care for is their won ton soup--fairly bland, but everything else I've had is very good.
I live in Downers Grove and had been getting mailings from Bok Choy. We decided to eat there and I was seriously very impressed. The outside isn't anything special, but you can't judge a book by it's cover (I don't know why the prior reviewer wouldn't mention that). The inside is really decorated very stylishly and has a fun look to it (especially for the suburbs). We all really liked what we had ordered (there were 5 of us) and there were delicious veggie options. High quality veggies and truly fresh ingredients. Highly recommended within the blandness of suburbia.
I think I may have found a good Chinese place in the suburbs. I read some reviews (on another site) that raved about this place, especially the Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp. It did not disappoint. The shrimp, not something I'd usually order, was awesome. I could have kept eating it. I'm craving it right now. If for nothing else, this dish alone is worth going back for. We also ordered some of our standards, which were also good. I have to say the egg rolls tasted a little mass-produced, but we only got them because we had a coupon. We will be going back.
This is the best Chinese restaurant in the area. Very clean and nicely decorated, and the service has always been very courteous and prompt. The food is great - and in generous portions.
