So I've been hearing about the beer garden for years but have never made it before this past weekend.  The food was good, but the scene was sort of cramped and a little fratty.  Mostly, though, the bad review is because of the dress code posted on the front door.  Apparently, there are no "baggy clothes," "backwards hats," "sports jerseys" or "bling," allowed, but subtle racial coding is fine.

It was my first time with my huny to hit the Bohemian Beer Garden last night to meet up with our friends who are regulars here. I've heard/read good things about the Beer Garden but never was motivated to go because I don't drink beer and alcohol in general. My huny wanted to check it out and so being the good luvah I am, I went along for the "experience".

We got there around 830pm to a packed garden! It's a HUGE backyard but it still managed to draw a full house. The set-up is interesting with picnic tables surrounding the center stage. It was a bit overwhelming for us newcomer's but the crowd was friendly and everyone was in a festive mood! Needless to say, anything involving alcohol always guarantee's good times.

We hung out with our friends all night and managed to befriend some new friends. It doesn't seem all that conducive to mixing and mingling because everyone arrives in their "clicks" and so it doesn't seem all that easy to meet people. The crowd seems "older" but not geriatric ages which I found to be cool because there didn't seem to be any "Frat" type boys who I always find to be uber annoying and downright obnoxious.

The one thing missing was some good music but I was told they couldn't pump up the jams due to it being located in a residential area. We'd definitely come back to try the food cuz some of the sausages and food was looking mighty delish!

We thought we were on our way to the Buddha Bar in the Meat Packing District but ended up at the Beer Garden in Astoria.  It was kind of warm out, a bit humid but there were a few occasional breezes combing itself through the apartment buildings, trees, and line of people trying to get into this mythical garden of beer that most fraternity college students dream of one day mirroring their backyard into alongside the biggest stainless steel fireball of a grill that would produce an endless mirage of perfectly seared meat that would feed them and their friends from dusk til dawn.

The line looks long but moves quickly along as the tired rent-a-cop they hired looks at your ID.  As you get towards the front of the line, you can already catch the faint smell of grilled ball park food and the strong whiff of fresh and stale beer stank.  Yes, I did say beer stank.  You all know what it is - that smell that we are unfortunately so used to, the smell of the rubber mats on the floor behind the bar or the smell of the dumpsters in back of a sports bar.  It's not that it smells really bad, but if you've ever stayed too long at a party, this smell will conjour up all the good and bad memories you've ever had of them.

The lines to the food and the drinks are long, the tables are extremely crowded, during the summer, it's usually quite hot or sticky, even at 1AM in the morning, but every Friday and Saturday when the weather is even remotely nice, and every holiday in between, the crowds of beer garden fanatics young and old come to this place of haven and spend $10 - $15 for a pitcher of various beer (usually 2 - 3 at a time), or $6 - $8 for well drinks from an indoor or outdoor bar.  The 'garden' is lined with picnic benches, empty kegs, and canopys and the several hundreds of people are chatting, singing, dancing, laughing, and enjoying themselves as the join or leave the lines of other people waiting to refill their buddy's plastic cup with some sort of beverage.

The food is a bit expensive, almost as bad as ball park food if not as bad - $10 for a kielbasa sausage, bratwurst, or andouille cajun sausage, or an additional $2 with fries.  An generous order of fries will cost you $5 but there will be more than enough to share with your friends.  Other options are burgers, hotdogs, etc. with free fixins on the side.  Be prepared to get additional drinks or plenty of water cause I think they purposely salt up the food in order to get you to drink up.  The food is actually quite good and the people serving you, though with very thick and sometimes fake sounding German accents, are extremely nice despite the weather, drunkards, and slaving over a hot grill usually resulting with a very moody staff.

The people who go to these places are usually there to have a good time with old friends, meet new friends, and just make as much noise into the night as they sleep the next day away in hopes of getting ready for work on Monday.

One thing to be aware of, be careful of the crowds of Asian folks who start by asking you to take a picture of them.  As soon as you agree to do one, they whip out 3 or 4 more cameras and ask you to continue shooting away.  I was going to charge $1 or $2 after the first one, but I felt like being nice this weekend.

If you've never gone to the this place, come check it out.  Finding parking may take a few circles of the neighborhood blocks but it's usually not that bad.  Don't come expecting anything fancy but plan on having a good time with friends and being part of an experience only best understood when actually there.  Enjoy folks.

I'm not a beer garden kind of girl, but i tried to give this place a chance.  the thing is...how can you enjoy the garden if you have to wait in a long line for beer and another long line to get food (mostly because there are only 2 waitresses serving the whole place).  the cheeseburger and fries were pretty delicious though.  when we left there was a loonng line of people waiting to get in...why? so they can wait in more lines once they got in the garden?? lame.  the place was pretty cute though...i think if you get there early enough and settle in before it gets packed it may be worth it.

This might be the only reason to go to Astoria, and it's a damn good one. Affordable pitchers, damn fine kielbasa?? It's a meat and beer drinker's dream....aka mine. Friends, games, and staking out a table early are key.

I finally made it to this place after all the stories I've heard. When walking up to this place, all you see is a 10 ft high stone wall surrounding the perimeter. Inside the walls, you can hear tons of talking and shouting. When we made it to the front, there was a huge line in front, which we waited on for about 20 minutes. Beware, no outside food or drinks, water is not an exception. They will make you throw it out before entering the premises. As soon as you walk through the wooden doors, there are tons of picnic-style tables/benches all over the stone gravel courtyard. All tables were completely filled with 20 to a table or so, and the rest of the people standing around, pitcher in one hand, a plastic pint cup of beer in the other. Situated along the walls, are kiosks for food which I've heard good things about, the sausage and pepper in particular, but I was not able to try it out this time out. Other kiosks are stations for beer taps, serving Pilsner Urquell, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden, and I believe there were other varieties at the other stations serving all pitchers for $14.00 + tip. In one of the corners, is a full-bar to order an hard alcohol drinks. There is also an indoor area with a bar for people to drink out, but this place is just too nice to sit indoors, grab a couple pitchers and try to find a seat if you can. Bathrooms are pretty small, with a 3-4 urinals and 4-5 stalls for the men's bathroom. This place can get DIRTY, since the majority of people were drunk.

I thought this place was pretty original, simple but very pleasing. I went with a group of my friends and had a great time. I will definitely come back to this place when it is a little less crowded. I'm pretty sure there is nothing stopping you from playing some outdoor beer games, flip cup or beer pong anyone?

I mean I guess. Not worth the trip to Astoria, imo.  It's just a bloody open space w/picnic tables.   Let's not romanticize it;  I'd never go again.

It's way too big and I hate the rocks.  I picked most of em out of my shoes by the time the N showed up tho.

This is the best gathering place to relax in the summer -beautiful cool garden setting with trees shading the area and plenty of beer along with a grill that serves yummy food.

On weekends this place can get pretty crowded so come early find a picnic bench and sit your your ass down and have some beer.

Love meeting my friends here for a relaxed night.

My cousin wanted to get our evening started here before going into Manhattan and I found it to be a cool spot.  Crowded of course but inexpensive pitchers and people just hanging out enjoying warm summer evening...I can get with that.  Good times.

When I first walked into this place....I knew there is a god.

I just went here for the first time last night for a friend's birthday and it was  amazing. Pitchers of beer, picnic tables, tents, perfect weather, great friends....how could this not be a good time?

This is the most unpretentious drinking environment ever. I mean you sit at picnic tables.....and this is how it should be. Go here with a group of friends. Talk, play beer pong...drink drink DRINK.

Recommended for:  beer, fun time with friends.

Drinks 4, Service 3, Ambiance 3.

After some fun at the museum a group of friends and I headed over to another engagement we had... it was all part of our "Drunkness day" and let me just say, nearly everyone by 5am the following morning was indeed... .......

Getting the beer garden wasn't that bad and is a short walk from the N train (see Maria M's review for directions).  To get in, you first enter in through the bar, and then slowly make your way to the back door leading to this MASSIVE outdoor space.  The night was cool and wet, so we didn't enjoy ourselves as much as we would've liked, but on a warmer day, I agree with Dennis K in that this place would definitely be packed.  They do get bonus points to having imports on draft and not carrying the "usual" suspects.  While we didn't stay long, it was a fun time and our group plans on coming back...

So why 3 stars?  Well, for starters there's the lack of bathroom.  While one "is" listed, was out of order and that doesn't make for a happy Sean.  Second, when hearing the word "Bohemian" I had some thoughts in my mind and the actual place was somewhat of a letdown from that.  Was it fun, yes.  The tables however are a little too close together making for rowdier nights to be a little on the "annoying" side I can fathom.

I'd come back on a warmer day with good friends and a functioning bathroom.  The interior garden could also use some sprucing up to really liven the place (maybe some music); and maybe they should think of having wait staff outside to take your beer order instead of coming in and lugging it out...

Sean Approved:  Yes.

I am so NOT a beer person in the sense that I would definitely not be chugging can after can or doing a kegstand, but I do enjoy it from time to time. A friend of mine and I were scouting out Astoria and came across the famous beer garden in Astoria quite accidentally, and decided to grab a drink since it was gorgeous out and they were the showing Euro 2008 soccer games! Inexpensive beers, and of course a crazy selection, which also included Magner's cider, CRAZY!!! We sat outside with our ciders and ordered fries to go with them while we enjoyed the soccer game. The ambiance was so laid back and fun. There were families and friends and couples and multi-generational gatherings, unlike anything I've seen in the US before. There was quite the European flair to this place, but I am not sure if that is always the case or whether it was a result of the Euro 2008 live telecasts.  The kids had a playing area in the center, it was fun watching them all play and run after each other. Oh, the bathrooms were sooo clean too! I am so very impressed by this place, I'll surely be back!!! :-)

Anything with both the words "beer" and "garden" in its title must be good, right? Well, depends on your scene. If you like picnic tables, tents, live music, gravel floors and pitchers upon pitchers of beer, then sure! No trendy decor or annoying shot girls here. Just real beer (goodbye Budweiser) and good times. Oh, and maybe the occasional flip cup or beer pong game, if you happen to want to relive college frat house memories (we're not too old yet are we??...).

LOVE IT! love the area! love the garden! love the people!  at first when i got off the subway i was a lil scared walking underneath the rails... but then u realize that the people around u are all young people as well.  u start to feel really safe!

when i got there i felt like i was at some outdoorsey thing back in texas on ut austin's campus or something.

it's loud, its crowded, pitchers of beer everywhere, it's perfect!

great place to sit here not have to talk over the loud music, chill, play cards, talk, laugh!

btw dont forget to buy the huge kielbasa... juicy and goes great with all that beer.

my new summer time dig!

It was a dark and rainy night. My wine 'happiness' was starting to fade and I needed a refill. Enter Bohemian Hall Beer Garden.

The Beer Garden was atypical of most beer gardens - large concrete square with tables for chugging delicious beer. Honestly, it was more gulag than bohemian, but who cares about aesthetics when beer is involved. But on a warmer night, I can definitely see this place packed.

Go to the bar inside the building to order your beer. Pitcher of Pilsner is about $14 bucks, which isn't bad. Mainly imports on draft. I was glad to see they did not carry ho hum beer.. I'm talking to you Bud!

Good for chilling and drinking more than you should with friends (obviously).
Throw in a grill and a beer pong tournament and... yikes!

When I go to a beer establishment and the bartender is a fine, Eastern European import, this is what I like to hear:

Me -- "So what's the best you got?"

Bartender - "For you?  Me."

He hands me two small cups of his favorite beers, and tells me to try.  "Oooh, the second one!"

The Second One came in two sizes: Big and Bigger.

I'm so in love.  With the beer.  The bartender's cool, too.

This place looks like an old VFW hall.  The bathrooms are not so bad (although I hear that the men's room in Penn Station is preferable to the one here), and it would be good if there were more of them.  The "garden" is concrete with concrete and numerous picnic tables.  Not particularly comfy or inviting, and the gravel is not helpful to drunken patrons.  But it is great to be able to drink outside.

To get there, take the N to Astoria Blvd.  Walk north on 31st street.  Soon, you will see the floppy hipsters walking past you in the opposite direction.  Make a left onto 24th avenue.  Go to the place they just left.

One of my absolute favorite things to do on a nice day!!! Come thirsty with a group of friends and you will have a great time.  I walk in and I swear I hear that heaven sound (ahhhhhhhhhh from a chorus)- picnic tables, tents, hundreds of people- all in a good mood- and BEER EVERYWHERE! Theres live music some nights, even if its not my style of music it makes the setting that much better. People get rowdy by the end of the night, but not in an annoying, fighting way. I can't believe I haven't been yet this summer, I cant wait to go back.

FYI when those drunk munchies come along they do have food at reasonable prices. Pretty good double cheeseburgers. mmmmm....

This is one of my favorite places in NY!  No, it's not romantic or clean for that sake, but it is a hell of a good time with plenty of room for friends and fun.  You can't help but have a great time here.  Whether I'm with a huge group of friends (the fact that smokers and non-smokers can continue the party without taking breaks periodically rocks) or with a "close" friend (playing mad libs or go fish), it never fails to be a place for great beer and good times.  The Chicken Paprikash is heavenly, but if the kitchen isn't open, the bbq kielbasa (sp) is just as good.

Downside: flagging down waitstaff when the kitchen is open.  Good luck on that!

$14 for a pitcher of stella, which filled 4 mugs.  not bad.  It gets pretty busy but  Im not sure what the big deal is with this place, besides that it has lots of outdoor seating.

Bring friends, and it'll be more fun.

Something that I found completely strange- it was at least 80% guys there.  Not something I usually notice or care about, just odd.

Great place to go have few beers with friends.
+ huge outdoor yard can accommodate large groups of people
+ decent price for a pitcher (although being from Vegas ... we get better deals around here :)

- little difficult to hear each other when everyone around gets drunk and starts to yell like crazy ... (but, heck, isn't that what most of us do when we get drunk - we get rowdy :)

Seated on an entire square block in Astoria is a wonder of modern day drinking venues in the US. An excellent tree-covered beer garden with plentiful seating and $15 pitchers of exceptional imported brews such as Krusovice, Spaten, Hoegaarden, and Stella. When hungry order the Kilbasa and fries. You might find football/soccer matches or live music here as well at any given time.

Ideal spot for hot summer days and those cooler weeks around Oktoberfest. Prost!

Great beers at cheap prices, quick service grill outside in the corner, great location.  Perfect for large groups but you have to really be determined to get tables and sometimes get in on really busy weekends. The band and dance area is a prime spot for people to make an ass out of themselves when a band is not present.  The bathroom situation could be better here - but I'm not going to ding them a star for that - the Beer Garden is the summer place to go.

There aren't too many phone calls I can think of that are better to get at 2pm on a beautiful Saturday than

I'm in the car on my way to the Beer Garden, do you want to go?

Well, I can think of some, but we don't need to talk about those here.

Outdoors - check
Good beer - check
Good food - check
Occasional live music - check

If you've got a large group, get there early and at the same time or you'll never sit together.  Bring cards/ping pong balls for drinking games.  The only downside is that word has gotten out about this place so it's a complete mob scene any nice weekend, but I have the benefit of living close by so it's easy to get here early enough to beat the rush.

If you live in Astoria and you haven't been here yet, I don't really know what is wrong with you.

Ah, the biergarten!  This is one of the most fun places to come in the warm weather, when you can enjoy the picnic-style seating with your pitcher of beer and kielbasa (or, if you're veggie, the grilled portobello mushroom smothered in garlic!)  It's laid-back and fun, and sometimes there is live music (though, in the words of a friend, sometimes it can feel like you're listening to the live version of 95.5 PLJ).

This is one of the most fun outdoor drinking spots in the outer boroughs.

It's tough to get tired of this place.  Sitting outside drinking beers with friends.  Good times had by all.  Table service for food can be terrible and/or non-existent, but it's something if you can get it.  And the walk-up grill truly never disappoints, though a meal jumped from $6 to $9 this year.  But, most importantly, the pitchers are still $14, which aint all that bad.

Some ideas for the trip: deck of cards, Solo cups, ping pong balls.  Always fun to play a good game of Asshole, flip cup, or beer pong here.  Or just bring your drinking shoes and get after it.

Before I went to the Bohemian Hall Beer Garden I had never written an angry letter to the management. This place managed to change that.

I went there on a Saturday afternoon and was disappointed to find that the actual garden was closed, and would be for another week in spite of the lovely weather. The inside looks pretty much like any other dive bar in the city. The restaurant downstairs is similarly underwhelming in spite of the fact that their website boasts an interior with "real imported czech furniture." Apparently real imported Czech furniture looks almost identical to what you can find at Target. After visiting Brooklyn's less famous (and supposedly less authentic) Radegast Biergarten I left confident that I'd rather take the Disneyfied version of Czechoslovakian beer halls over the real thing.

Surprisingly, the beer selection was pathetic. Especially for a place that has "beer" right in its name. I can't say much about the food. The waitress refused to serve us because they were too busy. Those were her actual words. The servers here were rude, and not rude in that way where you think it's part of the charm of the place. No, both of the servers who waited on us just truly seemed misanthropic and bitter.

We sat for two hours, split two beers between four people, ate a basket of bland home-made potato chips, and were finally told we had to close out our bill because our waitress -- who managed to remain M.I.A. for the duration of our stay -- was done with her shift.

Still hungry and thirsty, we had no choice but to pay up and head out. Luckily, the Sparrow bar and restaurant across the street had a lovely staff and delicious food and the night was not a complete loss.

The angry letter I sent to manager@bohemianhall.com has yet to be replied to.

If it were possible, I would sublet my apartment in the summer and set up a tent within the glorious outside portion of the Beer Garden. And live there. And drink beer there. Everyday. THIS PLACE RULES.

Seriously though, it's a great place to go with a big group of friends. It's also really easy to make new friends there so, heck, go alone! They have a lot of variety as far as beer goes, and the atmosphere is so awesome.

I really want to live there in the summer. At first, that was just my catchy intro for this review, but now I want to do it for real. Would they let me? Am I crazy for wanting to do this?!

Who know a beer garden could be full of liveliness and zing? I clearly gave as many stars as I could simply because I have no qualms and always have a beautiful drunken time. I'm a little puzzled, isn't beer pong a college thing? I'm not necessarily against it but honestly was a little turned off by  it.

Beer pong aside, this place was alive with flowing beer, nonstop conversation, beautiful people laughing, crying, every emotion in between and game playing. I felt like I was at a large family reunion where everyone sort of segregated into their own group yet felt comfortable enough to chat up a complete stranger if they ever so desired.

The food options are delicious yet limited. You'll never be disappointed.

The beer garden offers a relaxing environment, especially during those beautiful summer nights. The weekends are definitely packed but again, what place isn't?

If you enjoy all of the above, go go go! Just don't let the beer pong bother you too much if you're like me.

The fact that something so large exists in one of the 5 boroughs is enough to blow my mind... and give this place 5 stars. Woo.  Can't recall the details as I had more than a few pitchers.

There's no better place to spend a warm summer night than the Beer Garden.  I wish there was a little more variety food-wise, and that the lines for it weren't so long, but these are minor complaints.

That pig in my sausage must have been squealing that morning because man, was that the freshest sausage I ever done did eat! All around the food was great, but I have to knick a star for the limited menu during construction of the beer garden, and the lack of attention during our dining experience. Never fear though, I will return, open minded and with extra star in hand.

Bohemian Beer Garden is the best place to drink beer in NY, period.

I've been to Munich for Oktoberfest.  I've drank at beer gardens in Austria and Prague.  There's something about a beer garden that somehow makes drinking beer - hell, make that life - that much better.

It all starts with the plot of land.  In a city where a small patio is a coup, Bohemian Beer Garden sports something like 100 picnic tables in its outdoor area as well as a stage w/ dance floor.  Crazy!  Granted this isn't Manhattan but do you know how much $$$$ that land is worth?

It would be easy to compromise the 'Beer Garden aesthetic' but they don't.  The beers on taps are all Eastern European - a mix of lagers, pilsners, hefeweizens, etc.  Great stuff.  They do have burgers but you're nuts if you don't opt for the kielbasa sausage instead.  The fries are good but make sure to add salt.

It's easier to get to than you'd think.  Just take the N to Astoria Blvd stop and it's only a couple blocks from there.  Get off and start going East on 31st street towards 24th ave (hard to screw up - go away from the highway).  Make a left on 24th ave.  It's on that block.

I can't believe it took me so long to check this place out but I've finally got another reason besides good Greek food to envy Astoria denizens.

Hooray for Beer!

Subway ride in from the city - $2
Pitchers of imported beer - $14
Live music - $0

Hanging out with your friends on a warm summer's night with the smell of grilled sausages wafting about; laughter, music and good times all around - priceless.

Review: Locals just call it the Beer Garden; think spacious outdoors
seating; Czech & Slovak food; Czech & German beer; spent many years in Slovakia, and this place pretty much nails the beer garden thing right on the head; good times

The Good: Cheap pitchers of good imported beer; hearty food; open skies; cool, mixed crowd

The Bad: Other than crazy long lines on some nights, nothing--this place rocks

Side comment on the food: I love Czech and Slovak food, but if you're sketched out by grilled klobasa (or other things porky), mega-carboloading, or cabbage as a side dish, then stick to the sweet palacinky; if you're lucky, you'll go there when they've got whole pigs on spits and miles and miles of pork-in-casings crackling on the grill...good times indeed

The Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria is amazing.  One of the best parts about living in the area and definitely a draw for me to move from my digs on the Upper East Side.

We've come with different groups of people and leave blitzed and full of great food. Be sure to check out the inside bar and also look at the hut of ladies manning the grill.

From what I remember, they don't take credit cards and the lines outside the walls and inside for the beer can be long, but hey; where else can you have an experience like this?

So grab a seat at one of the tables, grab a pitcher of Staropramen, and be prepared to make new friends.

Disneyland for 21-30 year olds. This reminds me of summer camp. Around 300 people my age sitting in picnic tables, the din is only chatter and live music. Stand up. Look over the tables, is there anything so beautiful?

Beer Garden has a much different crowd during the week than on Saturdays...  Id recommend the week, but will happily accept the weekends.

Great for anyone if you are with friends, the weather is warm, and prefer to look up at stars and smoke rather than tin ceilings.

BrouCzech!

What a great way to getaway from high strung tight wads in the city!  The Bohemian Hall Beer Garden is both massive and packed.  My friends and I came here after a fantastic dinner just a few blocks away at Teverna Kyclades for a couple pitchers of cold beer ($14) to enjoy outdoors on a warm evening.  The beer garden is unassuming, walk in in flip flops or shorts and nobody'll blink an eye.  Pick a picnic table from the masses of other crowded tables and let your conversation drift amongst hundreds of others into the night.

I hear the food here is a perfect compliment to the beer, and the indoor area can be just as fun as the outdoor area.  I had neither, and I still had a great time.
