I used to go here once a month when I used to make and sell handmade jewelry. They have a great selection of crystals, pearls, beads, and other jewelry-making supplies. If you want to buy crystals, head to the left, grab a number, and wait for one of the ladies behind the counter to call your number. They have the best prices on crystals that I've seen, outside of online ordering.
I was there this past Saturday since I was downtown in the Fashion District. They have a sale going on Chinese faceted crystals right now, by the strand (about 40-42 beads per strand). They are priced at $5 a strand and range in size from 4mm to 12mm. My fave crystals will always be Swarovski, but these Chinese crystals aren't bad...especially since they are faceted. Anyhow, I grabbed about $120 worth of the crystals. Can't wait to make bracelets, earrings and necklaces out of them!
They also have sterling silver and gold-filled findings...go to the right when you enter through the doors. Those items are behind a counter, so you'll have to see one of the ladies that serve that counter.
Although most of the employees here are nice and serve you with a smile, there are about three that always seem to have a sour look on their faces LOL The worst is the older, heavyset Armenian lady that works at the main counter. I've never seen her smile in all the times I've visited. Must be against her religion. ;-X
Parking is a b*tc* in this area. Bring your change as metered parking on the streets are $3 per hour. Yes folks, $3 per hour for regular meter parking! Used to be $1.50 when I visited early 2009. They have plenty of garage parking, ranging from $3.50 on up.
SO far this has been the best bead and finding place that I have found.
My sister and I actually went to this store almost a year ago for my wedding. We were looking for glass pearls for a project of hers, and though we browsed several beading stores, I believe this place had the best prices for strands of pearls. That was last year, when I wasn't even interested or knowledgeable enough to buy supplies for my own jewelry making ventures. This time around, I came with a purpose...to buy cute beads and pearls, and buy I did! Even on a Tuesday late morning, the store was full of people! They have quite the selection for the small space available to them, but they make use of that space! I'm not really a fan of their organization. Again, I think it is a space issue. At times, the aisles can feel cramped, and not everything in there is high quality. But, again, I have not found a cheaper place yet for certain supplies, so I will be making another trip here, probably monthly! =) Wheeeeee!
I have been coming here since 1989. Their selection of beads, charms and Swarovski crystal is incredible. Their prices are very good. You need to be prepared when looking for Swarovski crystal; it's pretty fast-paced. Otherwise, make sure you have enough time to browse their incredible selection. Make sure to bring plenty of quarters with you; the City of LA has raised the price on their parking meters - it is now $3.00 for an hour (it used to be $1.50 for an hour). Well-worth the trip and the parking to come down here.
A very fun experience! They have tons of selection, but don't go expecting excellent customer service. The store is fast paced, so go prepared. If you're not looking for crystals you can take your time looking at their wide variety of beads, charms, etc.
