Bogart's, Cove bar, Cafe Kalia- these places are very similar and popular. Each is different and unique for its food, ambiance, price and service. For all three places - what gets to us, the loyal customers, all the most has to be the WAIT. Indeed, the time that takes us to get there, find parking, (not so much for Cafe Kalia), get in the line, and wait.
Honestly, I can't tell you which place is my favorite. Cove bar and Bogart's are once a month gathering hole, or a quick ( theoretically speaking) spot after surfing around Diamond Head/Waiks.
First of all, I like the speedy gonzales - lady-who works the counter at Bogart's! She knows how to deal with people under pressure and stress. Five Star for her, if you are a regular patron you know who she is. She gets the coffee asap and takes your order asap. Although, the wait is longer to get in the food takes longer, especially ,when it's slammin. Anyway, if you are lucky you can grab a table or the couch seating and relax! Talk stories while you wait, don't come here expecting the fast food service.
Secondly, I love the bagels here, it's cheap ,warm, healthy and hearty. Sometimes, I get the "Hawaiian"Waffles, with light cream and fresh fruits. I have tried their various omelettes with home fries , pretty tasty and not as expensive as other spots. The regular coffee is smooth, I don't drink fancy nancy coffee concoction. My friends have enjoyed their lattes and what not in the past.
Finally, I like the arts and ambiance. I can walk in barefoot, in my bikini or boardshorts... it's very laid back despite the crowd. It has the down -home- country feel in the midst of hustle and bustle.
A healthy alternative to your diet.
We arrived late one sunday afternoon. There were no lines only delicious choices. We tried the Acai bowl and Pesto pizza. Both were scrumptious. I'll have to return again to allow their menu to appease and placate my palette.
I LOVE Bogart's! It's my favorite weekend breakfast place. My BF and I always order a 1) spinach bagel with sun-dried tomato cream cheese 2) acai bowl (see photo link above - next to stars) and 3) regular coffee. I am NOT a coffee drinker but I'll drink it here! It's sooo tasty with the honey they have in the condiments area. And if you order it "dine-in" you get your coffee in cute/funny mugs (see photo link above).
In my opinion, it's much better than the OTHER acai bowl establishment next door. ;P The service at Bogart's is much better. The girls at the OTHER place are rude and take FOREVER to get your order completed. Choose Bogart's and you'll be a happy camper.
...and that's my two cents. :) Annyung!
I've read the bad reviews and I have to say.... Why?!?!?
My girlfriend and I went on a thu am and after seeing how HUGE the portions were, we decided to split a meal. The owner Maria happened to start talking with us and brought us a complimentary acai bowl. It was fantastic & Maria turned out to be such a sweet lady!!
The omelette we got was awesome and the place seemed to function quite well contrary to some of the bad reviews. The pancakes people kept ordering around us looked fantastic & BIG. Everyone kept taking about 2/3 of what they ordered home. Big prices?? Try spliting a meal, our tab was only $17.
Here is what is strange about some of the bad reviews: no parking? That's not their fault, they are in a tiny strip mall. There were tons of neighboring streets w/parking nearby. It's nice out here!!! Walk.
It's too crowded & you have to wait???That's usually a good sign that it's a popular place.
Finally, for the guy who has gone there 12 times but doesn't like it. Dude, obviously you have something against the place!? Why would you keep coming back? Now I'm starting to question you??
this rating is strictly based on their acai bowls (although their breakfast is really good too. breakfast burrito with mushrooms & spinach + acai bowl = excellent match).
so this is my story: i went on a search~ an island wide search for the best acai bowl. i have eaten many acai bowls. i have traveled many a miles, as well as even tried to make my own. but there has and is only one champion. and that is bogarts.
now don't get me wrong, they do have their off days. like when i went today, they forgot to put honey. sad face. but usually they are on it! i wish i remembered her name but there is one employee who makes it EXTRA special. i seriously wanted to cry tears of happiness when i ate that acai bowl she made with love. but their bowls always have TONS of fruits, TONS of honey, and TONS of granola. the acai berry mix is also perfectly blended with soy milk (and only soymilk) so it's not watery or a diluted version of the acai. and it's a pretty big portion (it is $8.25 + tax but acai bowls are pricey everywhere).
tips:
*bogarts only takes cash!
*parking is a bit tough so you might have to park on the street
*there is no bathroom in or by bogarts
*bogarts seems like it is the only place that gives just as much when you take out as when you order in. most places put it in cups, but bogarts uses bowls so feel free to take out! but it doesn't taste as good when you wait too long and it melts so i like eating it there.
*there is only one size acai bowl here. it's big enough to split between two people if you just want a snack.
*sunday is their busiest day! so be prepared for a long line.
looking forward to finding a place that beats the bogarts acai bowl!!!
happy acai bowl eating. :)
This place sucked. We went here for breakfast this morning based on the reviews here, and first of all, there is no bathroom for their customers. No place to wash your hands, and not even a bathroom within walking distance, isn't that illegal at a place that serves food? On top of that, we waited well over an hour for our food, and it wasn't even very good. I got a spinach/sausage omelette and it was pretty boring and way too much cheese. Not impressed, Yelpers.
Okay, the only reason why Bogart' lost a star is because for the last two times we went there, we had to wait over 45 minutes for the food, even though it was far from being busy.
That's kind of a let down, because except for that, the food is still great. The French toast with strawberries is excellent, and I am a sucker for the crab cake benedict. So many fat lumps of crab meat, and the sauce is light, not greasy, yet tasty.
So: bring a book, or a friend you really need to catch up with.

Bogart's has quite a few really good plates, and I still have to come back to try others. There are… Read more »
This place attracts many many many people.
I went here for Sunday lunch, and it was packed. Luckily the 4 of us were able to find a seat. However, my friend was complaining how he didn't want to star at everyone's b-hind while eating. (That's because we were at the table right where the line forms.)
Anyways, I got the strawberry waffle, which looks amazing, and tastes just okay. I must admit that the price is kinda steep for a place like this, but I guess times are tough.
Would I go back? Probably not. Parking is tough, it's too small to fit all the people it attracts, and the food is only ok.
Still my favorite place for breakfast. We had never had their Chicken veggies omelet before and we are wondering why it took us too long to try it. The portion was big, with lots of vegetables consisting of asparagus, red peppers, mushrooms, spinach, onions and avocados. It was so tasty!
We also had the spinach and avocado omelet. We left very satisfied!

I think by far Bogart's is the best place for breakfast in Honolulu. We have never been… Read more »
This place mystifies me. I've been probably a dozen times (my wife likes their coffee cups and pancakes. Sigh...) and have yet to have an enjoyable experience. Parking is terrible. The service is horribly slow. The menu is lackluster and the quality of food is well below the Honolulu average. The prices are absurd. The music is loud, terrible, and not well suited for the ambience of the store. In short, this place sucks. Badly.
I've tried the breakfast bagels. I've tried the eggs benedict. I've tried the pancakes. I've tried the coffee. I've tried the burritos. I've tried the eggs, hash, toast, etc. It's all rather boring. None of it was actually good enough to warrant trying again (hence I've tried so many different things).
They do have one good quality that saved them from getting 1 star. Their mocha is very good. Nice coffee cups too.
BREAKFAST ONLY REVIEW
Honestly, this place bothers me. The food is ok but it's not good enough on it's own for me to deal with rest of the PAIN IN THE ASS that Bogart's is. I've been 3 times and usually feel this way. I would have given it 3 stars, but I really want to make my point(s).
-Just to set the everything off just right-PARKING is a PAIN.
-The SLOW LINE is a PAIN.
-Finding a DECENT SEAT is a PAIN.
-Their TECHNO music at 9 AM on a Sunday morning is a PAIN.
-Their mediocre/overpriced/made-up-recipes FOOD is a PAIN.
Some of this I could deal with if the food was worth it. .
These are the things I've tried:
CORNED BEEF HASH PLATE-Honestly, I don't even know why everyone is so crazy about this plate. What's wrong with you guys? I feel like I'm in BIZARRO WORLD here because everyone loves this dish. Yea, it's good corned beef (kinda on the dry side), but there's nothing hash-y about it. Their "hash" is just LARGE chunks of shredded corned beef individually stirred with diced potatoes. What kind of HALF-ASS CRAP is that? Shouldn't hash also have onions and possibly other veggies like carrots and bell pepper? Shouldn't all of the ingredients be mashed together and then baked or fried to mesh the ingredients? What they served me was not even close to that.
I've also had the MIGAS. I know migas as a Tex-Mex dish (I'm from San Antonio, the GODFATHER of Tex-Mex cuisine). Anyone not familiar with migas, it's basically eggs, corn tortilla pieces, onion, peppers, sometimes cheese all sauteed together. Now I know that Bogarts might not be so familiar with traditional migas (this is Hawaii, after all), but their recipe is totally picked from thin air: Store bought crispy corn chips with some tomato based bean chili. THE FUCK? That's not migas. That's red chili with chips. Bogarts, you're trying to pull a fast one on me-AGAIN. I mean what I was served was ok, but not what I ordered. You could at least Google a recipe.
Boyfy got an OMLETTE and BANANA PANCAKES w/ HAUPIA.
The OMLETTE was good, but a bit overpriced.
PANCAKES were good too, but not enough banana slices.
My friend got the EGGS BENEDICT. I didn't try, but they did look good and she liked them. She did find a HAIR in her eggs though.
Even though they may have a few things good on the menu, it's just not enough. I would rather go to HAU TREE LANAI- Easier parking, similar menu(they have killer benedict, hash, taro banana pancakes), waaaay better recipes, presentation and service, unbeatable view for roughly the same price.
Ugh. I was dragged to breakfast at Bogart's because Diamond Head Cove Health Bar was closed. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised that the wait wasn't TOOO long to get our food, so I've decided to update my rating. We had the acai bowl (really good b/c of all the fresh fruits - they are not stingy at all) and banana pancakes (I'm not a pancake fan, but these were really good!). Fine, I'll admit it, I like Bogart's - I just have to go when they are not ridculously busy!

Bogart's has decent food - acai bowls, bagel sandwiches, breakfast dishes, etc.

BOOOOOOOOOOOgart's. Here's the thing about Bogart's. It's trendy. It's on Monsarrt. It's packed. It's a "Cheers" type of atmosphere in a breakfast nook. It's for cute, healthy, 30s types.
That being said, I really like going there after I work out in around Diamond Head. My secret is to park at the K Park and walk up. Why not? You're trying to be healthy by going to Bogart's anyway, why fight that awful parking lot? Another secret, if you are lazy, is to park along the street. I've always found parking on the side streets. Overall the food is quite strong especially for a small establishment, which has no waiters.
As another Yelper said, I do prefer Cafe Kaila, but Bogart's is fine for those days when you can't take the Kaila lines! Here, you can really sit around and talk for a long time because there isn't the pressure to get out (even though there is usually a long line inside) if you sit outside (I see lots of people with their dogs) or next to one of the walls. There is more pressure to leave if you sit in the middle because ppl are constantly walking by you and staring at your food and you.
Food I've tried:
BLT: a little dry because I don't like mayo in the morning.
Breakfast buriitto: Yum-o, but your standard fare, eggs were cooked well.
Pancakes: Decent
Shake, Chocolate and Peanut butter: Both decent
Eggs and bacon and potatoes: Nice, small portions, well-prepared.
Tips:
Go early to snag a seat.
Sit along the wall or outside.
Be patient, orders take a while to post up.
Crazy busy on a Sunday...
I was surprised to see that this place was a order at the counter kind and not wait service based, with this amount of success they could easily have seat more people, and allow the wait staff to yield more money with tips... Maybe eventually.
I had the crab omelet and my friend had the bacon and egg sandwich.
Coffee was drip and came in a large 20+ oz mug. Staff (about 4-6) was working hard to expedite orders. The flow and order process was the only negative... If they had wait service, it could be a 5 star.
Bogart's is the kind of place that is always a pleasant surprise. It looks pretty casual and cramped but the food is worth the wait. Have the bagel sanwich or the french toast. Stick around and hang out- the place has a great vibe and beautiful people. I'm not really sure if the food is really that good or if the eye-candy just makes everything taste so yummy!
There are several things I like about Bogart's. The scene is cool, the food is nice, and the outdoor seating is pleasant (although my experience is that you have to ask if you want someone to wipe down your table). At Bogart's you order at the counter and someone brings your food. I've had the avocado scramble and a brewed coffee. The egg was carefully prepared and artfully presented. The portion however was tiny for the price. The brewed coffee was good but not a full cup. For $2, I was hoping for a whole cup but I guess I would've had to pay more for another inch. I'll probably go to Bogart's again because it's close to my house and convenient for casual business meetings, but I am on the lookout for some place better.
I really like this place. Nice fancy coffee mugs, nice environment and location, friendly (some cute1s!) workers, good food, and some other stuff I may have forgotten.
-SOmetimes their coffee tastes watery and other times it is strong.
-belgian waffles are very good. +++!
-their breakfast bagels are quite dense and filling. my favorite is the garlic bagel with spinach, eggs, cheese, tomatoes, and mushrooms. that is one big bagel sandwich
-their acai bowls are quite good. I actually prefer theirs to Diamond head health bar.
-the omelets are good and quality stuff, even though it may be a bit expensive.
I like how they have a cold water container you can serve yourself with and the best thing is that the maple syrup they use for their waffles and pancakes-IS ACTUALLY REAL MAPLE SYRUP! There are so few places that use real maple syrup and I can't think of any other place on the top of my head that uses real maple syrup. Most other places uses fake syrup which tastes weird and texture is bad and is full of high fructose corn syrup. They leave the stuff out in containers for customers to self serve with it. THe fact that they use real maple syrup means they care for a quality product for their customers. As you guys can tell, I am a fan of real maple syrup.
Also, I love the fact that it is not a waiting place, as a sit in and waiter served place. With the counter order an sit in to eat style, I feel it is much more relaxed environment without having waiter service.
And they not only get 5 stars for good food and using real maple syrup, they were very kind enough to let me leave behind a bunch of fliers on the counter for my jiu-jitsu instructor's classes that he is offering. I think that is awesome, they have fliers on the counter helping small businesses get word out as they have fliers for other services such as fitness and yoga stuff out. I actually joined a yoga place for a while due to finding their flier on their very counter I left my stuff at. THey also have art from artists hanging on the walls for sale. Nice art stuff.
the only bad thing is that sometimes it is so crowded (indicator of how good this place is) that it is hard to find good seating and parking is all taken so we have to find parking somewhere on the street.
this place was okay... but it's too tiny. i felt claustrophobic trying to eat with people surrounding me because they were waiting in line to order.
the omelet i had was good.. but the potatoes had a weird oily aftertaste...
I like Bogart's! The pancake was awesome. The haupia sauce covered the entire pancake and then some. the acai bowl was good. Nice atmosphere.
Found Bogart's via yelp when I was researching prior to visiting Hawaii for the summer. I was pretty excited to try something different. When I was a Oahu resident for 3 years, I never heard or came across Bogarts.
Reading the reviews got me nervous... about waiting in a long line, waiting for your phone order and not having a table to enjoy your meal. People suggest calling in a phone order... so that's what I did. The girl on the phone said it'll be ready in 15 mins.
When we got there...
+ there was parking spots open in the lot
+ only 2 people in front of me waiting to order
+ lots of tables
+ my order was already waiting for me
Today is Thursday... we got there around 7:30am. Maybe we came at the right time... We ended up eating our takeout there... since there was lots of open tables. All types of people seems to roll up at Bogart's! Tourist, locals, surfers, business workers, young to retired.
We had the taro banana pancakes with haupia sauce (3 huge pancakes, I was only able to eat 1... it was good, but I'll probably never order it again. Oh, I also noticed there was pink and blue dots in my pancakes, don't know what that was all about... but that was a first) and the crab and avocado omelette with potatoes (My friend is a huge fan of this dish... he said, "who knew crab and avocado would taste good in an omelette" I guess Bogart's!). No more then $25 together. Bring Cash!
All in all, I experienced the opposite of what people yelped about. Dang yelpers got me all nervous!
I would love to go back and try the other items on the menu. The next time I visit Oahu, I'll be stopping by Bogart's for more!
Oh! How do I even begin to describe the gastronomic experience that I had at Bogart's? After my sister introduced me to this place, I'm a fan. What we got: The crab cake benedict and the banana taro pancakes with haupia (a Hawaiian coconut desert) sauce. I was in heaven after our lunch which filled us up after a hike out to the Makapuu lighthouse in the morning. The crab cake benedict - while pricey at $20 - was well worth it with huge chunks of sweet crab atop a toasty crispy baguette. But, but, wait! It was the taro pancakes with haupia sauce that won my heart. The pancakes melt in your mouth. The next time I go I'm going to ask for a tub of the haupia sauce on the side since the pancake to sauce ratio needs to be evened out a bit.
Now, if only they could clone Bogart's and open up a place here in L.A. - preferably in South Pasadena so it'd be close to me.
Simply said, this is my favorite breakfast place. I would have given it 5 stars except that the wait is atrocious at times. Definitely come here if you have no other pressing plans for the morning. It's a perfect place for a very leisurely weekend breakfast. I have a couple of favorites depending on what I'm in the mood for. Everything I've ordered is wonderful, but here are my top five:
- Taro Banana Pancakes with Haupia Sauce (I was describing this to my brother-in-law and he said my lips were quivering, hahaha well they really are THAT good, better than Boot's and Kimo's in my opinion, but don't stone me until you've tried it!) Heaven in the mouth, pure heaven.
- Veggie Omelette, I get it with roasted red peppers, salsa, and asparagus, and I sometimes get it with egg whites only, either way, it's delicious.
- The Toasted Breakfast Bagel with bacon, enough said.
- Crab and Avocado Omelette, real crab, get this if you're in the mood for something a bit richer, it's very creamy with the avocado and cheese.
- The Crab Cake Benedict. It's $20 but you get two crab cakes, and I'm not even a huge benedict fan, but this one is VERY good. If I was a benedict person to begin with, I'm sure this would've made #2.
The coffee is excellent too, I always get the caramel macchiato with 2% extra hot. If you don't ask for extra hot it comes out pretty lukewarm, it's really good, and I never get caramel macchiatos anywhere else except at Bogart's.
So what are you waiting for... GO!
Cash Only
Went on a Thursday, and maybe it's just my luck but there were seats available and no line, and a 10 minute wait for food. Good times.
We got:
Home Made cornbeef hash, eggs and rice - It was good. Eggs were fluffy. Cubed potatoes, and cornbeef chucks. Not the usually mush together thing. It was about 12 something, IDK about that. Check out the picture for yourself.
Bagels with the works - Is what my friend got, and is what she always gets when she goes there. So it must be delicious. Sundried tomato spread, avocados, tomatoes, and something else.
Their parking area is pretty small because they share it with 5 other stores. So street parking may be best. It's a very chillax place, a lot of the customers seem to be wearing: jogging wear, swimwear, or very "fun-in-the-sun" attire.
Yum, I really like Bogarts! Good food, nice chill atmosphere.
I've heard a lot about the fried rice but have never tried it. I don't remember everything we've had but here's what I remember-
-Corned Beef with rice, eggs, potatoes - my personal favorite, it's not corned beef out of a can and it's really tasty, potatoes are cooked perfectly, scrambled eggs are fluffy. Getting hungry writing this!
- Breakfast sandwich - so basic but so good!
- Lox and Bagels - Good
- Crab Eggs Benedict - Below Average
- Pancakes - Good
There's more but I don't remember. Most food has been really good, with the only exception of the Eggs Benedict, it wasn't to our liking. I think the coffee is too bland but my wife likes the light nutty milky latte's. Parking in the neighborhood is easy.
Cons-
-Seating is first come basis... no that's not accurate, you have to grab a table when it's available and there's not many tables to go around. I'd rather sit and order and tip a waiter/waitress than stand in line and wait for a table.
-The tables aren't always clean and you have to bus your own tables.
- It gets hot inside, even after their remodel.
- I hate it when I'm eating and people are in line staring at my food and watching me eat!
Since discovering Cafe Kaila, I found the food to be overall better at Kaila without the hassle of finding and bussing a table, and like the wait service at Kalia. It's a tough call, I'm sure we'll be back to Bogart's soon and the endless comparisons will continue.
An upgrade from your standard breakfast fare (with prices to match). Have not been disappointed by the following dishes we have tried thus far:
- Fried rice w/ egg, mushroom, spinach, asparagus, and corn. No SPAM or other dubious breakfast meats incorporated.
- Spinach pesto omelette.
- Decadent eggs benedict (including a crab version for a real splurge).
- Rustic corned beef hash - actual bite sized chunks of piquantly season corned beef and fried potato chunks rather than a composite of mashed potatoes and corned beef mush.
- Veggie pizza.
- Decent coffee.
Casual vibe. Quite a few folks in for a bite after a workout or morning surf session. Service is "unhurried" - I think we've averaged ~30 min. from placing order to receiving it. Parking and seating can be limited, but we've lucked out and scored both whenever we've gone so far. Bus your own table.
So its been a few months since I've been here but I still dream of those iced mochas! Cozy little place in a nondescript strip mall in Kapahulu.
The food is super tasty- especially the bagel works. Basically a bagel of your choosing with a super fluffy egg, cheese, tomatoes and spinach. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Belgian waffles are equally as good and the iced mochas put Starbucks and The Coffee Bean, which is right down the street, to shame. They're soo soo good!!!
Dear Bogart's- please please move to the mainland!!!
Awesome breakfast. The fried rice and the corned beef hash are new additions to the menu and I'm glad that they have been added because they are both amazing! The pancakes with haupia sauce and the bagel works bagel sandwich were my favorites until the fried rice showed up.
Cool ambiance, very low key - lots of people in workout clothes and people who just came out of the water. All the food is on the pricey side, and the service is on the slow side, so if you have a little extra time & cash (no cards are accepted), this is the place to go.
Yay! I love Bogart's! A cute and small-ish sit-down place in Kapahulu with amazing breakfast foods! I recommend the BAGEL WORKS (with sun-dried tomato cream cheese!) or the MILANO SALAD (a winner even if you're not a salad person). This salad is the perfect pairing of chicken (slightly salty) and red grapes (sweet), with the BEST balsamic vinaigrette dressing you will ever taste!
On the downside, it can get crowded on the weekend mornings, both in Bogart's itself and in the parking lot. You may be waiting a long while to get your food. Food is kinda on the pricey side, but hey, sometimes you gotta listen to your stomach and not your wallet :P
Buuuuut...the food and ambience is worth it! Yes, it still gets five stars. Perfect place for a lazy Sunday to catch up with a friend. Not good if you're in a rush or low on cash. Oh, yeah, PS it's cash only.
I came here based on my sister-in-law's absolutely glowing recommendation. I love breakfast food. So I came there with her and wifey.
We knew the order would take a really long time so we called in the order on the drive over there. We got: the taro banana pancakes with haupia sauce and the crab and avocado omelette with home fries. That was definitely enough for the 3 of us. But even though we called ahead, it still took almost 1 hour for us to get the food--1 hour after we got there.
While waiting, I got the macchiato which quickly cooled, which was just fine with me as I can't handle hot drinks that are scalding. And we were waiting and waiting and waiting. The macchiato was gone and done. When it finally got to us, it was somewhere between warm and hot, just like the macchiato.
The taro banana pancakes with haupia sauce was very good, but very sweet. It was kind of like eating a cake more than a pancake with frosting. The crab and avocado omelette was kinda fishy. Not exactly what I'm looking for in a breakfast.
Next time I'd love to get the crabcake benedict as I'm an eggs benedict freak, but it's hard to justify a $20 price tag for a breakfast dish. I'd eat here again if I had absolutely NOTHING to do and wanted to drop some cash.
I've only been to Bogart's a couple times, but every time I go, I somehow manage to be immensely satisfied by whatever I order. Not to mention that whenever I look around at what other people are eating, it looks at least 3 times as delicious as whatever I ordered. Mmm...intriguing. And definitely a motivating factor for me to come back again, and again.
Okay, so the prices are sometimes overwhelming, and weekend mornings are often crowded with long lines & waits. For their acclaimed breakfast bagel sandwich, I must have waited 15- 20 minutes! But as soon as I bit into my meal, that bitterness faded away. It was one of the freshest, yummiest breakfasts I have ever eaten out.
I also like the random paintings of different personalities they have up on the wall, of everyone from Marilyn Monroe to horses. It adds a quirky, kitschy touch that is very charming. If their prices were just a little bit lower and the service just a little bit faster, I would have given Bogart's the full five stars. Definitely hit Bogart's up whenever you get the chance.
I like Bogarts.
I like their Omelets.
I like their Nacho's.
I like their Smoothies.
I like their Sandwiches.
I like their Lox and Bagels.
I don't care for their coffee.
I don't like their prices.
$10 for an Omelet from a Cafe?
Whoa.
I felt itchy one day after chilling on their couch.
I thought, "ah, no biggie."
Till the next time I came in and saw a surfer dreadlocked haole, Bob Marley t shirt wearing guy who looked like he slept in his shirt for 2 weeks, sans underwear with some evidence of what he ate the night before on his cheek and the crabs catching a ride in his hair, just sprawled out on the couch with no care in the world.
I now order take-out. I got itchy just writing this review.
Awesome breakfast food but if you are an impatient person that has to be somewhere at a certain time, not the place for you. Best for those lazy Sundays or days off when you have all the time in the world.
I either get the migas (scrambled eggs/salsa/beans/avocado/tortilla chips), crab & avocado omelette or the breakfast bagel (bagel sandwich w/egg spinach/tomato/cheese). My hubby likes the local scramble. Coffee is good too.
They are happy to do a takeout but there is no separate takeout line so be ready to stand in the regular line which can take awhile. Parking can be a challenge too unless you go pretty early or on a weekday.
I got a banan waffle, eggs, and a breakfast burrito. Food is ok and not cheap. very packed, cool crowd and hard to park with not much seating. They don't take credit cards either.
The "breakfast bagel" and the crab, avocado and cheese omelet are to die for!
Charming neighborhood cafe with good coffee, decent food, and tons of personality.
I hope Bogart's is still around when I reach retirement age. I used to see these two gentlemen hanging out there for hours; sipping, talking; and playing cribbage. Yo, I'd be down with that.
This place can serve as a test for anyone who wonders whether or not life in Hawaii is for them. "Slow Down! This Ain't The Mainland!". Bogart's has great food and friendly service - the only reasons to go to a cafe in the first place. From a selection of bagels, to your favorite omelet, an acai bowl, and more, this place rocks! Do you have to wait a REALLY long time for your food? yes, of course you do. You're in Hawaii, at a cafe in Kapahulu, this isn't a touristy place triggered to turn tables quickly and adapt to mainland mentality! This is a cafe. It is designed to meet local standards: a warm environment, good coffee, good food, and nobody is in a hurry! You shouldn't be either. Don't they even have a sign inside reading "the opposite of fast food"? (or is that at Diamond Head Cove Health Bar next door, which is ALSO an awesome place by the way).
This is a place to hang out with friends and friendly strangers, talk story, eat, drink, be happy.
If you don't like that mentality - move to the mainland.
you failed the "am I built to live in Hawaii" test.
love the breakfast!
-- Bagel Works with sun dried tomato cream cheese
-- Crab and avocado omlette
Sadly, the coffee culture that I grew up in (WA) doesn't exist in Hawaii but I found a knockoff version of a neighborhood hangout I worked at through high school in Bogarts. For four years I've been a loyal customer and have enjoyed every meal I've eaten from "Boggies"- yes, I have a pet name for it. It's super chill inside and the workers are chill too. When I'm waiting for my order I don't want some overly cheery chick trying to make small talk and they never let me down. I can count on a "Hi." while they wipe the sweat from their brow and I pay, sometimes tip, take my food, and I leave. It's perfection.
On the rare occasion I don't take my food to go (I live a 2 minute walk away) the people watching is some of the best on the island. Yogis, surfers, sun burnt tourists, smelly hippies, local celebs incognito. Boggies attracts quite the group of clientele. And that group is large. Come during peak times and the place is packed. But worth the wait. Because after all this talk the best part about Boggies is the food:
+mocha espresso or mint chip shake (extra thick amazzzzing)
+the works bagel- pesto or sun dried tomato cream cheese with tomatoes, sprouts (will sub for spinach if they run out), and capers
+the breakfast bagel (group fav: spinach bagel with turkey bacon)
+the hawaiian waffle (banana, strawberry, blueberries, topped with haupia syrup)
+veggie omelet (their eggs are fluffy perfection and salsa with this dish is WIN)
+chicken avocado honey mustard salad
+pesto mushroom pizza
My boggie runs start anywhere from 6 am- 4:30pm and I don't see them slowing down anytime soon. Sure, could the tables be replaced? Yea and do you reek of burnt toast when you leave? Yup and it's funny to ask your smelly friend "Hey, how was Boggies this morning?" And they're all wtf? K, maybe you have to be there. But yea it's my favorite bfast place in town hands down. Not encouraging you to go there though. It's crowded enough already dude.
This place rocks!! I ordered the skinny scramble which had baby portabella mushrooms, white mushrooms, parmasean cheese and spinach and my bf ordered crab and avacado omlette. All the ingredients were fresh and the crab was real crab, not imitation. It is kind of pricy, but you are paying for your fresh ingredients. I will definetly be going back.
Food is really really great. I'd give it 5 stars if only there were more chairs and service was a bit faster.
I love the pesto chicken sandwich, the smoothies are so thick & delish, and the omlettes are amazing!
