4 reviews for Boerner Botanical Gardens
This was one of my happy places when I was a child.
When I was 6, and banged my head above my eyebrow (a scar I wear to this day) on a small stepstool and needed stitches, afterwards I wanted to go here and look at the flowers to begin the healing process.
When I was REALLY little - age 3-4-5 + and beyond, my mom and dad taught a class here - watercolor painting and drawing. I'd go with them and create masterworks, up to my elbows in pastel dust. My parents still have so many pictures of me in the zone, worki'n away.
My brother and I would explore all over this park while my parents classes were going on. Waterfalls, rocks - all kinds of cool stuff for kids. My parents have had art shows here.
And when I was in high school? The secluded parkway was a great place to make out. Just sayin'.

Lovely garden with pretty admin/exhibit buildings but needs to grow some -- it is too small for a large city like Milwaukee. Flower displays differ from Chicago Botanical Garden in that they emphasize type of planting rather than theme. Unfortunately, this leads to bare/uninteresting patches when the featured species is not blooming. Also, it is in an enormous surrounding park and is not all that easy to find -- needs much better marking directions.

I have to disagree somewhat with John F, although I think the gardens could always be bigger, I love that they sit in the midst of sprawling Whitnall Park where one can almost get lost looking for it. Once in the gardens, you have no idea you are in the middle of a large urban-suburban area. I think considering Milwaukee's size, these are nice gardens, and considering our once-grand, now-slipping park system, the well-kept beauty of the Boerner Gardens is impressive. I believe the gardens have free admission after 6:00 pm, and there is no better place for a relaxing walk or chat after a day at the office than here. Of course expansion, more plants, more interesting themed areas would be nice, but for now, I am happy to enjoy the fact that we do have this great "living museum" in the Milwaukee area.
Beautiful gardens and home to the annual Rose Festival. http://www.flickr.com/...
