This is the place to go when you are looking to feed your spirituality.
The bookshop lists among the best for me in LA, I am a passionate reader and not a day goes by without me picking an angel card or reading my godess cards..

The Bodhi Tree Bookstore has an excellent selection on all things spiritual... but also greeting cards, a huge collection of gifts, cards and all things that might help to give us insight in this life on earth.

Good Karma for the Bodhi Tree.
And don't forget to check out their second hand bookstore around the corner...

This is one of my favourite book stores in LA. Being an avid reader, I love spending hours browsing in book stores. If you are a fan of astrology, dream interpretation and all things spiritual you will love this store.

They  have a fantastic esoteric selection...fab incense, tarot cards and wonderful gifts. You must check it out.

Ahh, the Bodhi Tree.

Why do I feel so privileged to be reviewing a bookstore?  Actually, I know why. And this is the reason why I searched for it so that I could do a write-up. I love this bookstore.

For the past couple of years, I've been more metaphysically-minded in expanding my awareness. Any ol' bookstore will have a section for you to check out. The section is usually called "Spiritual" or "Metaphysical" or "New Age"....sometimes "Occult."  (I dislike that word.)  Well, a good portion of the Bodhi Tree store carries stuff like that -- from esoteric acupuncture, acupressure, in depth-astrology, comparative religion/theosophy/theology, Ayurvedic medicine, Chinese herbs, etc...

Walking in here is like stepping into a soul bath. I feel refreshed, new, and all cuddly inside once I take a whiff of their incense section. (I love incense and anything for aromatic purposes.)

The staff, and employees behind the counter, are prone towards grumpiness. For such an enlightened and positive bookstore, there's certainly an odd choice of employees.  If you seriously don't like working there, I'll do your job for free.

I usually walk away spending $25 to $40 whenever  I visit. And then I'll head on out to Urth Cafe and read the goods I just bought. They also host a ton of free magazines that are actually good reads. So even if you don't feel like spending anything, you can walk away with a few mags located right in the entrance/exit way.

I'd love....LOVE...to give this 5 stars, but usually the employees (the younger ones anyway) come off pretty snobbish. If I could give this place 4 1/2 stars, I think I actually would. As I write this right now, I immediately recall a lady who totally helped me out when I went to see Jonathon Goldman lecture about his latest book, dealing with the healing power of sound.  Apparently, if you spent $35 or over, you get a free gift bag.  I had spent $34 and some change, and when I walked back up 20 minutes later, after my friend notified me of the goodies bag, I showed them my receipt. I asked if there was anything cheap enough I could buy to go over.  She looked at the receipt and said, oh that won't be a problem and gave me a gift bag.

The gift bag was awesome. Not only was it a bag made of organic material, it contained nutrition bars, a nice book, a dvd, some coffee powder, and loads of other stuff.

They had two different bag designs, though. And I sheepishly went up there after the lecture was over to see if I can switch to the other, much cooler-looking bag, She said she agreed with me and made the switch without a fuss.

How cool is that. I don't use the bag much, but it's the principle that counts.  And after this review, I think I'm going to go and dig it up now and...do something with it. Like put stuff and carry it.  Maybe. Perhaps some day later. Not right now.

4 stars for this place, plus an extra 1/2 for the awesome gift bag.

NAME: Bodhi Tree Bookstore

TYPE OF PRODUCT OR SERVICE: The city's preeminent bookstore on spirituality, psychology, philosophy, astrology,  women's studies, graphology, religion, musics of the world, cookery, health, yoga, and the occult -- and all the fascinating paraphernalia that go along with those fields.

ADDRESS: 8585 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA 90069

PHONE: 310-659-1733

GENERAL LOCATION: On the north side of Melrose, a couple of blocks west of La Cieniga

HOURS: Daily, 10 am-11pm

DELIVERY SERVICE: You can order books by mail

WEBSITE: http://www.bodhitree.com/

REVIEW: I've been a patron of the Bodhi Tree for over 20 years. In the 80s I used it as a source for psychology when I was working on an M.A. in counseling psych, and, simultaneously, in a deep study of Hinduism. The Bodhi Tree had the goods!

Being in the store is a trip: you walk in and are immediately enveloped in a fragrance that's the combination of all the thousands of packages of incense in there! Since words cannot come close to doing justice to a description of the place, fortunately they have provided a very interesting photo gallery: http://www.bodhitree.c... .

You owe it to yourself to go in at least once and spend an hour just soaking up the place -- have a cup of free tea -- and when you're through in the main store, go around the corner and explore the equally fascinating *used* bookstore to pick up some esoteric out-of-print gem, while you explore their selection of teas!

PAYMENT: Cash, check, CC

PARKING SITUATION: NOT great! Do NOT attempt to park on the side streets because of very tightly controlled permit parking. Try your luck on Melrose or La Cieniga.

If what you are looking for isn't in the Bodhi Tree, well, have them order it for you. Basically, they have just about every book you might want to read and then some. And you often have the chance to meet the author thanks to their book signings. A legendary bookstore with helpful staff and great events.

The Bodhi Tree is my favorite bookstore in LA, by far. It's easy to spend hours (days, if it were possible!) lost in stacks of books -- I could rattle off a subject list (Jungian psychology, psychology in general, Buddhism, conspiracy theories, vegan cookbooks, magick, theoretical physics, UFOs, Christian theology of all kinds, tarot, astrology, Kabbalah, Hinduism...every spiritual path imaginable, basically), but that wouldn't begin to do the store justice.

Recent finds: a Robert Anton Wilson book that I didn't know existed, and a "coffee-table" style book called "Where The World Does Not Follow: Buddhist China in Picture and Poem" with beautiful Buddhist and Taoist verse from centuries past alongside black and white photography from rural China.

This bookstore is a must see.  It has everything from spirituality, astrology, meditation, dreams, self-help, psychology, metaphysics, and accessories such as stones, incense, essential oils, book marks, etc.

I have purchased several books here in the past, though I do agree that the prices are a bit over the top.  I often can find books on line for less.  What I can't find on line are the workshops and helpful staff.

Two weeks ago, on a disappointing dateless Saturday night (why do I seem to have better dates when I travel than back here in LA? Anyway... I digress), I visited the Bodhi tree with my roommate (thank God for her).   I tried to purchase an essential oil called  "Venus - a love potion", supposed to attract your soul mate for only $13.99.  Ha!  Well, wouldn't you know it, they were out of it.  Must have been I sign I wasn't ready.  So, I chose my second favorite oil called, "Healing your heart" (probably more appropriate at the time).  I'm determined to use it all up, then go back for the Venus!!!!!

We were, however, disappointed that the used book store was closed.  What do people not need used books on Saturday evening?

Needless to say, we both were grateful for a night of exploring the self, reading, and perusing the Bodhi.

Finally got a chance to check this place out and it lived up to everything that I had heard and all my expectations.  If there is a type of religious practice, meditation, healing method, cooking for healing method, self-improvement theory that you are interested in exploring this is the place for you.  They have vegetarian, raw food, and vegan cook books, ear candles (with instructions), herbal tea, and so much more.  When you have some time in which to explore this store and yourself, check this place out.

My metaphysic timeline:

Elementary school--I was terrified of Bloody Mary killing me and too scared to use the bathroom at night. Grandma resolved my issue by locking herself in the bathroom and chanting Mary's name into a mirror. She's still alive. (Thank, god!)

Middle School--I Ouija boarded with my little cousins. I couldn't spell well, and they were really young--who was movin' the pointer with Scrabble like precision? Very creeeepy.

High School--I met my "soulmate." Our, like, spirits, were like, sooo totally intertwined it was, like, unbelievable! My soulmate would totally call me and be like "Dude, what's wrong?" and I'd be like, "OMG, I can totally think of something that might be wrong! You're so in my head!"

College--My H.S. soulmate cheated on me, so I rebounded with a hippie, and became a Women's Studies Major. My hippie smelt like patchouli and took reiki classes. I felt at one with shrubbery and maple trees. One time a reiki master told me I taught her many spiritual lessons in a past life. It was sooo great to finally be appreciated.

Post-college--My rainbow is dead. More soulmates have (like totally) come and gone; I hate the smell of patchouli; I blame my early feminism for my inability to cook, and the only thing I reiki is the front lawn. Still no need for night lights. Still can't spell well. Still no Ouija explanation.

Had I found this store before my rainbow died, I would have gone gaga over all the rocks with powers, future telling playing cards, tree-spirit affirming text, and 'I am woman hear me roar' greeting cards. My house would have also been decorated with many bells, beads, wind chimes, Tibetan flags and white sage bundles. Now when I go in I'm completely uninspired. It's sad really. I'm naked without an aura, and all the gurus in training know it. Sometimes I'll try to fit in by drinking the free tea, and I wonder if it will have the same effect as Davidian Kool-Aid; It doesn't. Humph, I guess my pixie days are over, and the the people here who leave clapping are the ones who truly believe.

Nice place to visit, yet items are very expensive, might have to do with the hip zip code and the trendy aspect of the neighborhood.  Whats nice about Bodhi Tree, the selection of books is great and you realize the book stores in Venice are better.

If you dont mind....

if you really are desesperate to sooth your soul...come here for a quick fix...the smell of incense....is just the right amount.
Ok but before you commit emotional harakiri.......find a safe place to park, and if you are going to be fined...make sure is less than $ 50.00. Then come in and take your time and some tea.......and hang out and read, browse and try to find books that you will not find anywhere else. They have great collections, my favorite...Robert A Johson....very cool, they have all his books most of the time...so i can buy and replace my ever changing collection...(I give lots of books away).

Then prepare to buy stuff....jewlery, bags, etc., whatever...candles....
by the time you leave you are ready to continue your serenne journey....of life...

Maybe even barefoot.....

Ok i must go and continue with L I F E .

I come here and completely lose all sense of time..adventures! The incense, statues, and decor all contribute to the mystical, hippie vibe that brings out whatever spirit or soul lies in me. I've never boughten anything here as everything is pretty expensive although a lot of books are used..but I love spending the afternoon here cuddling up with a random book and sipping warm tea.

Pros: extensive selection of metaphysical, New Age, and esoteric books and accessories (Tarot and oracle decks, crystals, and other accoutrements); hot tea to sip while you browse; an entire shop devoted to used books (go there first and see if you can find what you want, then hit the full-priced store).

Cons: staff can be helpful but also mentally checked out; parking can be challenging.

One of my favorite things is to browse Bodhi Tree, get a few things, then head to Elixir Tonics & Teas across the street for a cuppa healing tea and some me time in their Japanese garden.

I absolutely love the free tea.  The tea is actually quite good and I was shocked to find out it was Celestial Seasons.

The bookstore is huge and has tons of very "alternative" books.   Very cool.  I didn't buy any books b/c I'm more a library girl.  I was tempted though!

The men are seedy.  Maybe these alternative older (much older) guys are really into brown girls, makes them feel cultured???  I had lots of older men (let's say interesting men to be kind) come up and hit on me.  I was trying to just read my book and sip on some damn free tea.  I think the toothless guy who approached me got a dose of too much self-confidence from the self help books.

Thank God..Or shall I say...
Thank Shiva..Krishna..Parusha...Buddha...The Divine mother...Baby Jesus (sounded good?)....The Dalai Lama...Kali Ma... Sai Babba...Amma Gee...and Mother Earth....for this book store!!!! Finally a place of sanity and answers On Melrose! I go here often and always check the used books first... as my motto goes,  "bargains first!"... Not really my motto, but you get the point! Lots of fascinating books on topics that make me know for certain what my life's purpose is. Amazing talks....The topics are intellectual and I can spend hours here... Maybe, if we could get everyone in this bookstore just once to read books we would have a more peaceful, loving and compassionate experience on earth!

My husband is from LA and knew I would love this bookstore and he was so very right. I felt a sense of home as soon as I walked in - like being back in Santa Cruz in the middle of Melrose. Nice.

Above having a great selections of books, periodicals, gemstones, and candles - the helpful staff ordered an item for me and shipped with no big problems. I received my item quickly and in great condition.

Thanks for a great experience - I will be back when we are in town again!

Good used section where bargains can be found.  Been coming for years, since the 80's actually, and as I was and am a searching lad, the Bodhi Tree helped fill a need.  When it comes to metaphysical/paranormal/spiritual, this is mecca.  Phoenix in Santa Monica is second.

The only thing that kinda gets me after a while is the kooky characters.  Most are harmless, but every once in a while one of the nuts with an oral fixation has one of those batteries that keeps going, and going, and going....  And they shove it so far and firmly up their ass so it won't quit.

A super cool shop that sells new and used books on topics that are not always credible to the intellect - in other words, my kind of store!  If you're interested in astrology, channeling, metaphysics, self-improvement, etc. you'll be one happy camper in this gem.  If you're in the mood for browsin' and contemplatin' or there's something heavy on your mind - this is the place.  You'll feel comforted by the smell of the incense and by the possibilities that exist in the pages.

I've found some amazing little books, and great prices too.  Afterlife, aroma therapy, aura colors, chakras, channeling, co-dependency, death, existentialism, karma, psychics, religion, spirituality, tarot, yogis, etc - it's all here and more. They sell bookmarks, CDs, incense, burners, magazines, and wind chimes.  There is also on going events - classes, readings, and various speakers. Two stores, one around the corner.

Helpful staff that will leave you alone when you're reading, benches and chairs around the store. Parking is a bit tough in these parts of town, I usually find something further west in front of the Pacific Design Center.   Go on Sunday so you don't have to worry about the meters.  Or set your cell phone alarm cause it is very possible you will forget and get a parking ticket.  Must see and experience at least once, this is an LA institution.

The Bodhi Tree has been my touchstone for years, whenever I feel I'm off my spiritual path, I can spend some time wandering the aisles, sipping tea, and stocking up on the latest in inspirational works.   They're also one of the very few places that rent spiritual DVDs, and the used bookstore in back is the place to unload the books you're done with.   This is also the place where Shirley Maclaine first got spiritual when a life-changing book "jumped off the top shelf" and landed on her...  The image is so LA, and it's become a part of pop culture, the visual just makes me laugh whenever I'm in the aisles.  It's also a great place for energy, because everyone there is seeking something in their lives, and they're open to some new direction and sort of "listening" to life...  I love being around people who are in that space.

I love the bodhi tree bookstore.  They always have interestinng books that major stores don't carry.  They are a metaphysical bookstore and best for books on Religion, Psychology, Astrology, Yoga, Philosophy Etc.  The problem is that sometimes it can get claustrophic and overwhelming and the staff don't know too much about the books they are selling so you're on your own.

Only one store in LA of its kind!  Self-help, astrology, witchcraft/magic, buddhism, homeopathy, meditation, tarot, recovery, whatever spiritual topic rocks your boat, you'll find it here.   They also have a great magazine section with magazines like body+soul, natural living, all those great mags promoting eco-friendliness, holistic beauty, organic food, spirituality, etc.   Can't forget the cds; they've got your yoga, meditation, and relaxation music along with trance for your Enigma lovers.  Btw, if you need a wind chime, this is the place to go. =)

They have an ongoing calendar of events with booksignings, psychic readings, meditation classes, and motivational speakers.  Fyi, I think I read that a psychic reading is like $30 for 15 min.

Free tea while you're browsing the store.  Crappy parking.  Open till 11pm.

Just to get it out of the way, I've had my moments of New Age introspection but for the most part incense-soaked, affirmation-infested "find yourself" places are not my style.
That said, Bodhi Tree Bookstore has everything you'd ever want in the ever-lengthening gamut from self-help to vegetarian cooking to Islamic studies to how to read your aura...etc.
We came in here looking for the Christopher Hitchens book "God Is Great" and I was forced to observe that while there was a section on Christianity, one on Islam, one on Buddhism, one on Sufism, one on Jainism, etc., etc., I simply could not find the atheist section.

However the lovely and bemused manager overheard my mutterings and went looking for the book, which of course was sold out (some kind of promising sign for the country? hmm). So, they would have carried it...I just forgot to ask in which section!

If you are allergic to patchouli, do not enter here. But I can tell from 5 minutes there yesterday that it is a MAJOR pick-up joint for the similarly-inclined. Do with that fact what you will.

I stumbled upon this place on my way to urthe cafe.  The pleasant smell of incense and essential oils is what lured me in but what kept me there was their children's literature section.  The top shelf is filled with folk tales and fairy tales from different countries.  I've spent so many hours online searching for these books and finally I found a place that carries everything I want on one shelf.  I got Russian tales, Victorian, Norwegian, Irish, Scottish, and a collection of tales on fairies from around the world.  The prices are great too, almost all of the books I got were under $15.

I enjoy this immensely, however could be better - they have had the same books for the last five years, and they haven't even moved from where they were placed!

Its a great place nonetheless, although I prefer going to other non glamorized places that stay true to their roots.

Back in the day when I was searching for something, anything, to help me figure out what the hell I was supposed to be doing with the rest of my life, I spent hours, nay days, in this bookstore. If you are filled with questions, this place offers widest variety of answers you're gonna find.

Buddhism? check.
Numerology/Tarot? check.
Witchcraft/Magic? check.
Zen Meditation? check.
What the f**k's wrong with me? check.
Recovery from: alcoholism, childhood/parenthood, co-dependency, bad relationships, sex addiction, dyslexia, autism, over-eating, under-eating, hair loss, weight gain, metabolism changes, mid-life crisis, pick two and call me in the morning? check, check, check, check,  check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, check, and check, check.

But seriously, this is a great place with a knowledgeable and helpful staff. They have free tea, which is a nice touch. And, in addition to all the books and subjects listed above, they have fantastic literature and used book sections.

The Bodhi tree is lovely place to spend an afternoon and always brings back good memories. Oh, and in case you are wondering, I decided to stop looking for the answers and just live and that seems to have suited me well this past 20 years.

I remember I was just a young 26 year old bgirl working for a record label. They sent me on a Mary J. Blige video shoot to retrieve audio drops from Mary and Common. I waited allll day and night for that perfect opportunity to bogart their time and slip in an interview. There was no way I was gonna just get "audio drops" from Mary and Common! Are you kidding? No, I was gonna lock Mary in her trailer and monopolize every single moment I had with her. And I did. By the time we were finished, I think she felt suffocated and dizzy.

The video shoot was wrapped and Common wanted to go to the Bohdi Tree to get some books. He offered to let me interview him in the whip and shoot him looking for books. The entire ride to Bohdi he was on the phone with former lover-songstress Erykah Badu. I remember I was fascinated by their relationship.

It was my first (but not last) time to the Bohdi Tree. Common offered to buy me some books, but I did not dare except his offer. I was nervous. I didn't want to come off rude or like...a gimme gimme" type chick, and I wanted to keep it professional. Looking back, I should have let him purchase some books for me and sign them. I had no idea what KIND of bookstore it really was. If I had the slightest clue as to what was in store in the future for me---it would have behooved me to read some books from Bohdi Tree. They offer books that can help to heal your wounds, shed insight, and uncover mysteries your psyche and ego didn't even know existed.

Bohdi Tree has an excellent and extremely thorough selection of spiritual, holistic, women's interest, alternative, magic, self-help, and almost every kind of book you can imagine. Furthermore, they carry tools, aides, charts, leaflets, pamphlets, flashcards, you name it of whatever you're into. This place is absolutely overwhelming and amazing. A day if not at least a few hours can easily be spent just browsing.

Hot tea in delicious flavors is almost always on deck, usually in cute little vintage cup holders which I happen to adore.

The prices are fairly reasonable considering they get pretty deep with the options. This is not your average wannabe spiritual, mainstream bookstore. I remember I walking into a "spiritual" bookstore in Silverlake only to leave feeling like I just came from Borders. Bohdi Tree absolutely satisfies any thirst for heavier knowledge of alternative thinking--conventional or unconventional.

The parking can be a downer. I've been lucky enough to catch a meter along the street so make sure you have your quarters around.

The USED bookstore they have is in the rear of the regular retail priced store. The selection is great, the service was friendly, and the prices are lower.

I love to eat at Urth Cafe anytime I'm at Bohdi tree or that side of town.

What a great shop. They carry tons of books varying from metaphysical (ranging from the old idea through the new idea), eastern religion/philosophies, holistic and alternative healing, and so much more (they also have statues, c.ds, stones...).

Another cool thing is when they shop opened they had a Bohdi tree sapling that eventually had to be transplanted into the earth and now it's a large beautiful tree! Oh metaphors and what have you ((love))

I will agree this is a great book store, and they have everything you need on the Spiritual / Metaphysical tip. Every time I decide I need a shrink, but decide on a self-help book instead, (which is quite often) this is where I go.
One last note. My maximum hang out time there is 20 minutes. My head starts to spin due to the over abundance of different energies from all the books, crystals, oils, incense and other magic spells that fill this place and people keep wanting to read my palm.

I adore the Bodhi Tree and not just because I used to work there! (my specialties were UFOs and Hinduism)
It's just a swell and wonderful place -- the customers may change from decade to decade but the Tree never will.
Long live the Bodhi Tree!
Oh, don't forget to visit the Used Books branch in the back.

There's no place quite like the Bodhi Tree Bookstore.  They've got books on spirituality, and religion, and astrology, and phrenology, and goodnessknowswhatology, and all of them stacked in little rooms that wind around until you feel just the least bit disoriented -- a perfect state of mind for this bookstore.

I always have a good time browsing the Bodhi Tree.

The Bodhi Tree bookstore offers an extensive catalogue of books that range from psychology, philosophy, spirituality to astrology. If you're into personal growth, spiritual wisdom or the metaphysical, The Bodhi Tree bookstore is you're store for all those important interests. The Bodhi Tree is all about mindful, new age thinking and healthier living. Books, CD's, and spiritual gifts on wellness go the gamut at the Bodhi Tree. I love this store. You can get lost in the calmness of the store and the goodness of the staff who are most helpful.  I went looking for a used book on quantum physics (the most obscure, boring book), but they had it in the used bookstore.

The Bodhi Tree also offers a good learning annex adjacent to the store where lectures and guided meditations take place. Check the schedule, if you're interested.    http://www.bodhitree.c...

Great store with tons of books on a variety of different spiritual (and non) subjects.  The place is so crammed full of books that you need a floor plan to efficiently navigate.

Parking can be tough in this area.  Ride a bike if you have one!

Best shop for books on the mystics and metaphysics. I have been enthralled with the goods here for a long time, and always find myself getting caught up reading about something so interesting and captivating that it pulls me in for hours. I have purchased many fascinating books here, along with incense, prayer beads, candles and stauary, and all at great prices. You must also check out the used bookstore in the back for equally amazing merchandise. The store also hosts speakers and events periodically, and has a tarot and palm reader on hand, which I can say is just as great as the store itself. Also, Sunday mornings the Bodhi Tree hosts meditation class, which is a perfect way to go into the week renewed. Let the sweet smell of incense draw you into this majestic store, and discover new things!
