9 reviews for Bocce Club Pizzeria
I don't like to give 5 stars to anything but Bocce's is not just anything.
During my years at U.B. this was one of my biggest indulgences (let's keep the drugs and girls I never picked up, anyway, out of it). I graduated from U.B. in '79, and thereafter travelled the world including a four year stint in Rome. In my life I have eaten literally thousands of pizzas (pizza in Napoli & Roma, Chicago deep dish, NY thin crusts and so on). Bocce's on Bailey is IMHO the best there is.
My favorite at Bocce's is the double-mushroom which is smothered in lightly spiced 'shrooms. All their pizzas have a great crust with a slightly burnt taste on the bottom. Sauce is a little sweet; plenty of cheese on top.
I make it to Buffalo about once every two years and first stop (standing joke for my college friends) is to Bocce's.
Note Bocce's is take-out only. Call 30 minutes in advance of your pick-up.
Bocce's is the epitome of Buffalonian pizza. It's too doughy, the sauce is too sweet, the mozzarella is dry, and the "slices" are cut in a puzzling, trapezoidal manner.
Pizza is such a malleable food and it varies by region...we have NYC style, Chicago deep-dish style, California style, brick-oven style, and you have the tasteless, pizzazz-deficient, could-be-Ellio's frozen pizza in Bocce's. Buffalo does not know pizza.
I'm not sure if it's open anymore, but go around the corner, down Main St. by the college bars and hit up Sal's. The owner's from Brooklyn.
As far as Buffalo pizza goes, I think this may be my favorite. They do it right!
Fucking great pizza.
The other "best pizza in Buffalo" restaurant that is, in fact, absurdly awful. If Leonardi's, on its best day, resembles the fiendish fecal droppings of an unlawful pokemon, Bocce Club's Pizza might be compared to the fresh musk of a noticeably unwashed digimon.
It's not that the pizza is bad, really, it's just mediocre. While Leonardi's sauce is repugnant, Bocce's is just boring. I can't say anything about it at all, really, other than what i've already said: skip it. Take your wife out to Allen St. hardware for bluegrass, instead--she'd like that. She's as boring as you are, probably.
Avoid Bocce Club. Avoid Leonardi's. Learn to play the samba. Learn to live, learn to really live, I beg of you.
It's the burnt cheese bits on the crust that make all the difference!
Oh how I love for Bocce's after having it and going back home (out of state)! There's nothing like it. Great pizzeria crust, sauce with a deep flavor, not runny, not all tomatoey...good, flavored sauce! You want to taste REAL pizza, you want something to remember, you want a taste of Buffalo? You want Bocce's!
a couple of years ago my family held a pizza contest - we would get a pizza a week and compare taste versus price. after trying almost all the pizza places in the area we came to the conclusion the best place for pizza (esp for the price) is BOCCE pizza!
... generally i do not give 5 stars for really anything either but Bocce is totally worth every savory, slightly greasy and pepperoni curled bite!
This is the original buffalo pizza joint.
I used to go here for year and years while I lived in the area.
They have a huge staff of guys, pounding out pizzas, tossing dough, and cutting the unique square pizzas in square slices.
They don't deliver, they don't take walk-up orders, they don't sell slices, they only have a tiny pick-up area, no seating, they are always insanely busy, they don't take any crap and they don't smile.
Think "pizza Nazi"
The pizza is medium crust , fantastic sauce, and well topped, adding parm to top off each pie
No one has this sauce. The down side is that they often burn the bottom with sauce..I like it..but you may not.
Order early
