Review from Julia K.
San Francisco, CA
My boyfriend's family calls this the "no name" restaurant because there's no clear name on the front. It feels like their neighborhood secret. We like it so much we came here twice in the 1 week we were visiting.
We had both breakfast/brunch and lunch here, and we loved it. I had this delicious Italian eggs benedict sort of thing and a bloody mary at brunch. Lots of great flavors, and classics, but with a bit of a twist. For lunch I had one of my favorite sandwiches ever! A sausage sandwich panini with broccoli rabe, taleggio and some mushrooms. The vegetable antipasti and beet salads are super healthy and fun to share. Servings are generous too.
The service is so friendly, and there's a good amount of space here. It's also super kid friendly, kids menu and everything! And we saw tons of families with really young children and multiple children coming in all the time too.
Even though we ate a ton of good meals this trip, the two meals I had at Bocca Lupo were actually my favorite. It's just a really good, kind, clean, happy neighborhood restaurant. -
Review from Arika S.
This was a cute place with a great atmosphere. The food was really good, and the prices were okay. The service was a bit slow, but other than that the place would have been 5 stars!
Try the mushroom bruschetta and the goat cheese with honey bruschetta. The mussels, kale, and egg sandwich with truffle were also very tasty.
Definitely a place to try! I wouldn't go on a weekend night as this place is pretty small inside. -

This place was cute, it reminds me a lot of Europe.
We were walking past and had to stop and get a glass of wine. They also have a large selection of Whiskeys.
We didn't try any food but I will go back here if I am in the neighborhood. -

Went for dinner with three other people on a Saturday night. My boyfriend and I both work in the service industry, so by the time we got out of work and got to the restaurant it was around 11:00pm. Not a huge restaurant, which I enjoyed. Beautifully lit, lovely brick walls, and overall nice decor. We were greeted within a few minutes by a nice, not too overly friendly waitress. She gave great service and we asked for her suggestions on cocktails and food items. We had good wine (wine list was a bit overwhelming), and great tequila and bourbon cocktails. Ordered the meatballs since we had heard about them - and they really were amazing! Also had the beet salad (fantastic), a selection of bruchettes, steak, polenta, and zucchini. Everything was super tasty and fresh. We decided on dessert - the mascarpone cheesecake was sooo good! It was pretty small - I would have liked at least twice as much. That was my overall and only complaint about it - the portion sizes were definitely on the small side for the price. It's great for sharing, but with four people, our dinner consisting of one app, 4 mains, a side and 2 drinks each, our bill was 180 without tip. Would definitely go again to try new things!

I miss working around this area so much just because of this place. The consistency of this place is remarkable. It's always the same. I usually start with my personal favorite, their meatballs followed with a panini, I can't finish this much but I just love to eat and taste their menu. Sometimes I'd get their sandwiches off the appetizer menu along with some bruschetta. You really can't go wrong with this amazing place.
If you love Italian food, this is a place for you. -

Wonderful neighborhood restaurant. The best bruschetta in Brooklyn. My one complaint is that it is too dark in the evening. I like to see my food. It is part of the enjoyment!

I've tried Bocca Lupo twice now, and both times have been disappointing. This week I was meeting a friend for dinner--it was 8 pm on a Monday night, and it wasn't too crowded. However, when I arrived, I was told I couldn't sit at a table until my "whole party" was present, so I was left to awkwardly linger near the door instead of sit at the many open tables.
When my friend arrived, we sat and waited to order. And waited. When we ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir to split, the waitress tried to upsell us another bottle. Not cool. I had read good things about the sausage panino, but I don't eat mushrooms, so I asked if it was possible to get it without. I was told, "No." Another strike.
The wine and food took a long time to arrive, and during that time, my friend and I were treated to the screaming children running around the place. I remember this from my last visit as well--a kid-friendly wine bar? Not really the place I want to unwind. Once my tomato and mozzarella panino arrived, it was pretty good. Also, I do have to say that the chocolate tort with hazelnut mousse was excellent. The wine was just okay.
Even though I'm tempted by the atmosphere and concept, I remember now why it took me a year to come back. Maybe in another year I'll forget and return, but not before then. -

Awesome drinks. Had a bourbon, basil, and ginger drink. Was really good. Also had the egg and truffle sandwich! So amazing!! The veal meatballs were also great!
We sat at the bar and the bartenders are so nice. One of them even shared their beef stew recipe with us.
Definitely coming back. -
Review from Steve M.
Not sure why I'm not going for 5 stars here because everything about Bocca Lupo was above average. Mixed antipasti = mortadella, speck, spicy broccoli rabe, tangy kale, robiola, and a parmiggiano-taste-a-like. That's what we call sweet dance-in-the-elevator-alone success ($17).
Went with the Classic Old Fashioned - it tasted like candy ($11) - real good.
The bar is beautiful, the floor-to-ceiling windowed walls are beautiful, they played Radiohead, 1979, and a few rockin' 80s tunes while I was there, what a treat!
It's a real slick place but completely warm and comfortable. I guess my only issue is the value factor...ever-so-slightly overpriced for what you're getting. Will definitely return. -

My fave place in the area. Amazing food with fresh ingredients, reasonably priced and old timey cocktails that will get you wasted in no time. And if you do have to wait longer for a table than assumed they make up for it with the best olives and bread to snack on. Yumedy-yum-yum.

I'm sure it's boring to read a review for a pretty solidly reviewed place, but I've been here so many times I feel I owe it to Yelpers.
Do's: 1. Get there early-ish for dinner (like by 8 p.m.), especially if it's a Thursday-Saturday and you want a table and you have more than two people. 2. Order the Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold if it's on tap. 3. Order any of the panini or the AMAZING mac & cheese, but if you order the lamb chops make sure you specify how you want them cooked; they can be a little too rare.
Dont's: 1. If you don't have kids or don't like kids, maybe stay away from brunch hours. They have a kids menu and it tends to attract...well, you know. 2. Don't order a mojito. They just don't know how to make them.
The service here is always good and friendly. We've actually never had a problem. The 3 stars is due to one-too-many undercooked lamb chop incidents and overcrowding (the wait and the close-together tables) at peak hours. -

the primary reason why people go to restaurants is to eat, right? well, in my opinion, i go for additional reasons like catching up with friends, enjoying the ambiance and having a generally entertaining time. so upon my visit to bocca lupo, the primary reason was fulfilled. the risotto special was fab-heart attack on a plate. the paninis were fresh and yummy and not over orchestrated. and the bruschettas were small enough to sample a few and big enough to share.
the downside is the rest of it. they need to put covers on the legs of their chairs as any time people move in and out of their table it is like nails on a chalkboard but more appropriately metal on metal. and the fact that it seems to be a children's playground is a bit of a turn off. i mean, even my parents who LOVE kids and my mum works with kids couldnt handle the stroller parade. now the restaurant cant do anything about that, i just wanted to point it out for others.
pros: food, value for money, service
cons: the chairs
but would i go back? yes, the food is god enough to tolerate the rest of it. -
Review from Pat P.
Wonderful ambiance, great service, decent food.
The food, albeit not magnanimous in portion, tastes good. I'm not as familiar with Brooklyn but I'd imagine this is a pretty solid joint. Definitely worth a try, but it's not incredibly impressive. A few things on the menu are quite unique, and the bar makes pretty good drinks. -
Review from Joolz M.
This is my go-to place when I meet up with a dear friend who lives in the Heights. (That's Brooklyn Heights, for all of you non-Brooklyners out there.) They have a decent selection of wines, and generally the food is very, very good. I also love the easy, comfortable yet stylish vibe, and it's really good spot for holding a serious conversation or just to have a drink (or four) at the bar. I always find that the staff is extremely pleasant and helpful, and that is seriously half the battle with me anyway. I don't want to feel like I should be honored to have the chance to frequent a restaurant, and I certainly feel at home here. Must-tries are the macaroni and cheese (of COURSE I would say that if it's good because it is my favorite food) as well as the beet salad (and I swear I don't usually like beets unless done well.) I also hear the meatballs are good, and I've never been disappointed with their pastas or risottos. They have good pizza, but unfortunately, I've had better. In fact, I had the pizza special yesterday, and it was just so-so. The flavors were good, but it was just too well-done, and the crust almost seemed like it was made out of pastry, and was sort of tough. Not my fave. But all in all, this IS a favorite spot of mine. It's a great place for a date, a gathering, or just to hang out on your own. It's kid-friendly too. Somehow they have found a way to appeal to just about every demographic, and I give them kudos for this!!! Highly recommended if you haven't been already.

Yummy place for brunch. Very generous portions - at least my frittata was - and reasonable prices. I got the mushroom and goat cheese frittata and it was perfect. Brunch starts around 11.
Even the kid's menu looked inviting... definitely kid-friendly! -

Just a great Italian tapas-esque spot on a quiet street in cobble hill. The kale is outstanding, and paninis are unusually good. Try the sausage and the chicken ones.

Sausage panini was ridiculous. I don't even like sausage but holy hell, this puppy changed my life. Bruschetta was nice not spectacular. My PLT panini was just aight. Sausage panini belonged to my dining companion but I couldn't help myself.

The food was alright at this place. Had order the roast duck and the squid ink pasta for dinner. The pasta and duck was bland, with the duck tasting sweetie than I like.
The place was a little loud for having a nice enjoyable dinner thought. The waiter was attentive and accommodating so the service was great. -
Review from Kitty B.
The perfect neighborhood spot. Cozy and welcoming with big open windows let in the light in til late afternoon. This contemporary italian cafe in the middle of Cobble Hill is a great spot to go for a good meal or glass of wine. The dishes are fairly light, not too unhealthy and taste really good. I haven't been disappointed yet. Typically go for brunch or lunch - have yet to stop by for dinner.
Brunch has many great options. One of my favorites is the sausage and broccoli rabe frittata or one of the paninis. Bloody mary's are nice and spicy.
The restaurant tends to get crowded on the weekends and is over run by families, which is typical of the area. But there is never a wait. -

Dobbs Ferry, NY
I went here as it had lots of good reviews, and it has that modern industrial cool feel to it. The menu seemed quite appealing, the food tasted ok, but the portions are tiny (not even american tiny, but european tiny!) and I was still hungry after my first order that I had to order some additional food and then go home for a snack. By the time I ordered twice it didn't work out as particularly good value.
Add to that the slow and terribly inattentive service, despite it being quiet and being served a bad pint. (steer clear of the draft.....they either don't clean the pipes or it was the first pull of the night).
Oh well, I guess I won't be back here! -

Ok I'm back! Ready for reviews in NYC :) So after 7 months in Brooklyn Bocca Lupo has become one of my favorite go-to spots. After several meals here I can say it's totally solid, always good, I've never had to wait for a table and it has a great ambience.
It's not a place to go if you're looking for one big entree, but is perfect for ordering lots of bites and sharing with the group (which is how I like to eat), the wine list is also totally reasonable. Favorites: The Creamy Mushroom & Leek with truffle cheese bruschetta is phenom, the veal meatballs a must and the banana nutella panini dessert is seriously to-die-for. Lots of other good things but those are my faves.
Bocca Lupo is always a safe bet for a yummy meal. -

A wonderful neighborhood restaurant with reliably good lunch and dinner. The bruschetta choices are all pretty tasty and great as an appetizer or to go with cheap but good wine. I've tried a couple of the panini sandwiches at lunch and they are all great.
The staff is super nice and it's a great place to just stop by if you want a quick glass of wine, or if you want to stay awhile for a quiet, cozy dinner. -
Review from Saskia S.
I'm pretty spare with my five stars, but I thought it through and realized I've never had a bad meal @ Bocca Lupo, the staff is always nice, and the drinks are tasty. Nothing to complain about + tasty food=five stars.
Although everything there is tasty, I really love the bruschetta. Especially the chicken pate with cranberries, and the mushroom w/ truffles.
The other small plates are great, the paninis are nice-sized and the staff is nice. It can get a little busy, but a true neighborhood gem!
Oh, and I'm a huge fan of all things pickled...which means I love that pickled veggies can be found on almost every plate!
We love wandering over here at random times during the weekend and getting a nice mix of things to nibble on... -

Wow, what a great find! I had dinner here the other night with my good friend, and it was the perfect place to catch up and eat some delicious food. The menu has all my favorites: risotto, panini, pizza...and lots of interesting wine choices. Others have commented that the portions are too small which I don't really agree with--my friend and I had a panini each and the hazelnut torte and it was definitely just the right amount of food.
The wine list is a little daunting at first because it's just organized by red and white and there are lots of (fun, interesting) unfamiliar varietals, but the prices are friendly so that helped me not be so scared. I picked somewhat blindly, but was very happy with my wine. I think this place probably has a pretty good wine-expert behind the list, so I wouldn't worry too much about picking something you don't know.
All in all a fantastic place. -

The food is really tasty and well presented. They have a great wine selection although it's a bit pricey. It usually has a very nice ambiance although a few times, there have been kids. To me candlelight and kids don't mix.

The first time I went here I thought all of the kids that were here was a fluke. The 2nd time I knew this place actually was THE place to be if you have a kid (or 2). Good thing I happen to have one.
The gorgonzola/pecan salad is good but I feel like it needs some other ingredient (maybe a fruit or something) because it's a whole lotta lettuce. I usually don't complain about too much food, but I don't like that I couldn't finish it all and because it's got dressing I couldn't take the rest home. The mushroom brushchetta was good and more filling than expected. I would go back just for the bruschetta alone! The chicken panini was kind of flavorless though.
A grown-up kid friendly place - makes me feel a little like I could actually have a kid and a good time at a place I'd like! The place is clean (somehow all of the kids haven't "yucked it up") and the windows are great to sit inside and look out at the neighborhood. -

This is hands down my favorite place to eat out in Brooklyn. It's hard to know where to start when describing a Bocca Lupo experience, because it's just that awesome. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed, mainly owing to the fact that it's off the Court 'N Smith drags. Huge floor to ceiling windows give the space a very open feel. It's not huge, which is nice, because you will not be forgotten in this place. I don't know how she does it but the hostess/waitress at Bocca Lupo is like a goddess of the floor. She makes you feel like you are 100% taken care of without smothering. She takes your order to the dome without writing a word down (its remarkable!).
And the food: Get the wine, get the bruscettas, and defs take a look at the nightly specials. They are worth it - I have never had a risotto there that wasn't delectable. You can also get plates to share, so it's great for groups and dates.
I'm just so in love!!! -

Damn. We really like this place and stop in all the time, like today, when we stopped in for a quick drink to celebrate a major bit of life awesomeness. Not as awesome?
The baby rat that kept running back and forth across the room.
The response was, "Hey, it's Brookyln". What are you going to say? But seriously, we probably won't be back and I'll definitely NOT leave my bag on the floor there if I do stop in for a drink again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Great bloody mary for the uninitiated. Nice small plates. This place falls into the category of favorite places I can walk to. Also reasons to live in the greater Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Heights continuum.
It's Italian. But not pasta. Good flavors mingling. -
Review from JaShin T.
Last night I intended to go to the Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain with a friend of mine, but then, as I was waiting for him in my apartment, my stomach started speaking to me. "You need to eat some real food, woman!"
So when my friend arrived, I told him I was hungry, and he just started walking. I followed like a puppy dog in search of good food, and was led into a far away land called Cobble Hill. I was scared. I was weary. Where was I going to end up?
Finally, peering out of all the dark and quiet of the streets was the Wolf's Mouth (Bocca Lupo). Fear not, this wolf was as friendly as can be. We were greeted by the lone waitress right away and offered a seat at the bar or the table in the back. I always prefer the bar.
Unfortunately, service was a tad slow, but the general ambience was so relaxing that it almost didn't matter...except that I was hungry and wanted my drink to ease the day's stress. All was forgiven, though, since the bartender was nice, and it seemed unusually packed given it was a Monday.
Deciding what to order was tough; I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Each bruschetta cost $2.50, and, after looking at the size from other people's orders, I thought I'd need a few of those, plus a couple of other little plates, to fill me up. Sure, I could've not ordered a drink so that I could properly feed myself, but what fun is that? It was also a tad hard to resist the special Absolut Brooklyn+fresh fruit+white wine sangria.
Alas, I came up with a solution to order one of the heavier items on the menu - the special risotto with brussel sprout leaves ($10) - in hopes that it would be enough. It arrived in a tiny white bowl with fresh cheese on top. I pouted at the size, but once I got halfway through it, my stomach started feeling like it might pop. Mission accomplished (and I finished it, btw).
My friend ordered the special thin-crust pizza with some green leaves, cheese, fennel and jamon. I believe it was $12. I tasted a little piece. Fresh indeed. And delicious. Did it fill him up? He said he didn't leave feeling stuffed but didn't get hungry later. I think this is the healthy way of eating - what the chef intended. My way of eating, the let's-finish-the-risotto-even-though-I'm-already-s tuffed-and-then-let's-order-some-tiramisu-because- I'm-feeling-crazy, is not advised.
Bill came out to about $60 for two drinks, one pizza, one risotto and one tiramsu, which my friend kindly took care of. I left a $12 tip.
So, perhaps, one should not enter the Wolf's Mouth if one has a wolf's appetite...unless you're going to order the risotto.
PS - Pasta and butter as an item on the Kid's menu? Does anyone else think it sounds strange? -
Review from Sarah G.
Finally got around to trying this place and I can't wait to go back!
The boyfriend and I had a wonderful Saturday night here. The space is airy with large windows, casual, and rustic. I totally dug it. We got there around 7 and waited about 45 min for a table. We could have sat at the window counter or the bar to eat immediately but I wanted a table. While waiting at the bar I enjoyed a wonderful glass of white wine (orvierto?) and the boyfriend had a tequila cocktail that started sweet and finished with a spicy bite. The place started to fill up around 730, which seemed early for a Sat. night to me, but the staff handled the volume well.
We had to get the meatballs and they were phenomenal - we contemplated getting another order! I wish they gave you more (portion is regular sized, I just wanted more!). Then we had two bruschettas which paled next to the meatballs. They were fine and the bread was wonderfully crisp (not soggy), but just didn't do anything for me. Then we had paninis - for about $10, they were quite big and really tasty. You could tell they used high quality ingredients and the amount of cheese was perfect. I wanted to try their tiramishu but I had to hurry out to meet a friend for drinks.
All in all, great date spot for an intimate dinner or a place to take family/friends. I think the space is that versatile but beware the menu is a bit small (although not necessarily limited). Also, very affordable! -
Review from David C.
Brooklyn, NY
At first glance, Bocca Lupo looks like quite a find. Tucked away in a quiet spot in Brooklyn Heights with a menu that plays out like a Italian small plates "greatest hits", a quaint, exposed brick interior and truly charming service, you expect great things.
Look a little closer, though, and the view isn't nearly quite as rosy. Inside, the sound level is unpleasantly boomy, a hideous, giant flat screen TV sits above the bar (as a certain well-known NY critic will tell you, that's a serious "don't eat there" quality no-no) and the tables are adorned with cheap, mall-quality vitrines and tired looking menus. But those are, of course, forgivable sins. If the food is good.
Unfortunately, it's just terrible. Out of the six dishes that passed across our table, not one was any better than lousy. Each tasted of cheap, sub-par ingredients (pedestrian, low-quality cheeses, astringent olive oils, dried spices) and felt slapped together with little or no passion for Italian food, or food of any kind. The tuna and fennel salad, while passable, was presented in a fashion that I can only describe as "ugly," and contained a few unwelcome bites that were mysteriously gritty. An arugula, blue cheese and spiced walnuts salad was overdressed, the walnuts almost candied (didn't taste the spice) and the blue cheese grade C at best.
A few bruschetta weren't much better, again the same less-than-fresh, far-less-than-high-quality flavors came to the fore with each bite (cheap garlic, and too much of it, dried oregano, etc.), and I found my palate tiring very quickly. Luckily, we'd ordered light, and the final plate of a gorgonzola polenta came right away. It was too salty, the gorgonzola tasted suspiciously similar to the blue cheese in the salad, and the pickled vegetables it was served with seemed generic, and wouldn't have been out of place on a low-end bar menu.
Not surprisingly, we quickly decided to skip dessert, and, despite the lovely service and location, won't be back.
P.S. I took a quick look at the 4 and 5 star reviews below, and, frankly, I'm shocked. Mass psychosis? Please, do yourselves a favor and go to Frankies Spuntino, 'ino, Inoteca, or any of a dozen excellent Italian small plates joints in the NYC area, as Bocca Lupo isn't worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as any of them. (And those restaurants don't have a giant HDTV over the bar, either.) -

Popped into this spot for a quick drink on a Sunday late afternoon/evening after a stroll on Brooklyn Heights with my beau. It rounded out a casual date day, with a very lovely cocktail menu. The ambiance is great, as well as the service. I look forward to trying the food on my next visit.

New York, NY
This restaurant does an excellent job showing how diverse Italian food is. The warm farro and mushrooms with balsamic and the sauteed asparagus with lemon and thyme were both incredible. The wine selection was great.
The space has a lot of hard surfaces so noise is definitely an issue if it's crowded. The seats along the perimeter are a little awkward because the person by the window is perched about a half a foot higher than the person on the opposite side of the table.
Overall this place is fantastic. It is a great spot to be entertained by food, it's located on a charming street, it has a great local feel, and it's definitely worth a prime position on your roster of favorite eateries. -

Great little neighborhood nook in the middle of Cobble Hill. The prices were reasonable, but the food was fantastic. I ate some sort of Italian sausage panini and my wife had a really good looking salad. The atmosphere had a neighborhood vibe and the people were very friendly. The seating was comfortable and the noise level wasn't too bad. I felt right at home here.

What an interesting little spot with a very unique menu. Been here twice, once for dinner and once for breakfast.
Atmosphere of the restaurant was excellent almost like being in a cave (but dry). Good music on at night. Well lit during the day with some softer music.
Service each time was attentive, knowledgable and very sweet.
It seems the ingredients used in the appetizers, sandwiches and breakfast plates was excellent. For dinner, we ordered the cheese plate which was very fresh. All sandwiches ordered were very well put together and each had balance. The breakfast appetizer was the bruschetta sample served with toasted rustic Italian bread, and was excellent.
Will be returning... -

Every time I have been to Bocca Lupo for Brunch I have walked out stoked and satisfied! Super friendly staff. Quiet street. Huge windows to let in the light (bring your shades if you are recovering).
All the brunch items are great but there is one dish that reigns supreme: The poached eggs. After you take a bite you will have a reference point for putting "eggs" and "perfection "in the same sentence.
Your welcome.
