When the Dallas royalty decide to eat, it is normally at Bob's Steak and Chop House. On several occasions, famous Dallas dignitaries such as Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman have been seen in a booth here.
The size and flavor of the steaks are really unmatched at many places around the country, however you are paying for this meal, so make sure you have the room on your credit card! Most people especially love the carrot that adorns every plate as a little signature of the meal.
You do also have to go with 4 or more people in my opinion however, because the meals come a la carte, meaning you have to order your starches and vegetables family style. If you have your cholesterol levels under control, make sure to try either the calamari or the onion rings, which both are served Texas style. For those of you not from Texas, that essentially comes from the phrase "Everything's bigger in Texas."
Also, the wine selection is tremendous here. I would highly recommend bringing a hearty appetite, and a designated driver!
**As of Jan. 2008, Bob's is a member of Rewards Network, so you can earn up to 10 airline miles per dollar spent.
I do love me some Bobs Steak & Chop House. I have friends who work in the computer industry and when they travel to Dallas for business and I can make the trip as well, I like to take them to Bobs.
The outside is inconspicuous, kind of stripmall-esque almost. The inside, however, is traditional steakhouse--dark wood floors, white walls, dim-lights, etc. Great bar here, but the drinks are Dallas priced ($9-$15 for basic cocktails).
Service is great, the waitstaff is trained well and our servers have always been knowledgeable about the menu, the wine, everything. No complaints here on my end.
Now the important part, the steak. Anytime I go to a steakhouse for the first time I order a filet. To me this is the test for any good steak place, if you cook my medium-rare filet well, I have trust in your restaurant. Last time I was at Bobs I went with a 9-oz filet and it was perfect. Good crust on the outside and pink/red center that was warm. Tasted wonderful, well-seasoned with salt and pepper. All dishes come with a carrot in brown-sugar glaze, that is really good, and signature of Bobs.
I would highly suggest Bobs anytime you're in Dallas, large business crowd here on most nights, so great place for clients and customers too.
4.5 stars..
i finally came to bob's!
great service... pricy sinlgle malt scotch list.. but at least it's a generous pour..
for appetizers.. my colleagues and i had calamari, crab cakes, and mushrooms..
the calamari was decent.. nice and crispy..
the crab cake needed more crab and less cake..
the mushrooms were flavorful.. big and juicy..
for my entree.. i had the rack of lamb. the lamb needed a little bit more salt.. but was cooked perfectly.. the mint jelly was a perfect pairing with the meat
my buddy's filet mignon was tasty though.. cooked perfectly.. but it ain't no cattleman's ranch in el paso
for dessert.. i had the chocolate cheesecake.. it was bit soft..
overall.. great food.. but pappas bros and nick and sam's are better steakhouses
Evidently hidden deep within a vault somewhere in Kansas City are blueprints that layout how every Steakhouse should look. Do you get that feeling as well? From the linens to the deep woods and dark lighting to the heavy sides this seems to be the only direction that Steakhouses are allowed to go in. Not that this is a bad thing but still...a little creativity.
Having said that this place didn't disappoint. Standard steakhouse? Pretty much yes. But there was something about being in Dallas that helped validate the "Steakhouse" stereotype. The cuts were good, the sides were well above average, and the bread was hot and fresh. The pickle/pepper jar added some nice, unique flair to the place.
A good time and a good dinner....all made better by having it paid for by a buddy who lost out on a hasty game of "credit card roulette."
This is what good steak is all about, meat tastes like meat, and that's all there's to it! I also like the fact that I can go in biz casual, no tie or jacket required. Everytime I'm in Tex, I try to go to Bob's. Great food, good service, and easy to find.
I was feeling adventurous and too over beefed. I ordered a pork chop. The FLAVOR was insanely good, it wasn't kobuca tender but definitely more tender than a typical pork chop. They served two HUGE chops. I only ate one!
We split the caprese salad, which was really good. The mozzeralla was so good and the tomatoe was really flavorful. There was no room for dessert. I really loved the service and that we didn't have to order sides separately. All the dinners came with a potatoe and a roasted carrot. I had the baked potatoe and it was done perfectly.
The wine by the glass was really good. Another lovely Dallas food experience!
i might get some slack for this review since this is a DFW fav. but in summary, there's better steak for the same, or even cheaper in Dallas. For a better nice experience try Al B's or even Pappas, read on to know why.
The service was good, but far from the level everyone suggested, III forks has them beat here. My MW steak was burnt and still somewhat pink/red inside, and the quality of the steak itself was honestly not much better than Saltgrass.
Even though i sent it back they barely even apologized and proceeded to burn it some more. Maybe it was an off night. Oh ya, the glazed carrots were ok, but having to pay $5+tip and walk almost 1/2 a block to the valet stand sort of ruined my evening.
First thing first. The bread was amazing!
Then, the medium rare Ribeye steak is fantabulous. A little burnt and crunchy on the outside, MR on the inside. No steak sauce needed!
The mai tai is $10, but well worth it.
Valet is $5, stressless parking. Just the way I like it
This place can get crowed. A good restaurant for a nice date.
Bob's is sort of like the girl next door. You see her in the neighborhood everyday and you don't think much of her. And then one day, you get a chance to talk to her and start hanging out. It suddenly hits you mid-conversation that she's hot.
I had passed by Bob's everyday on my drive. I didn't think much of it at first. It looked like it had passed its prime. Then, I started hearing glowing reviews from people about Bob's and I started taking a closer look. I finally decided to take the bait and made reservations.
The moment you step into the restaurant you feel like you've been missing the party all along because you hit a crowd of people around the bar. We hit up a drink at the bar while we waited for about 20 minutes for our table and met a couple folks in town for a convention. Heck, I even met a guy from my hometown in LA!
There are two main sitting areas. The first is in the front half of the restaurant, which I personally wouldn't advise unless you want to watch the game and have the raucus from the bar drown out your conversation. The back room, however, is much more reasonable. The interior is dimly lit and has dark paneled woods, but it's not an overly fancy interior.
The moment you take your seat, you're intrigued by a jar of pickled vegetables. Not knowing what to expect, I pulled out a pickled bell pepper. Money! Whatever they did to it, the pepper tasted like a pickle. Even my dining companion who hates bell peppers was sucking on it like a newborn by the second bite.
We both ordered the bone-in ribeye, which comes with potatoes and that infamous sweet whole carrot. The rib-eye was tender and cooked properly. It doesn't break the top 10 list of best steaks you'd get from places like Peter Lugers, Keens, or Sparks, but it is mighty tasty. I agree with assessments though that it is a top 10 steak in Dallas. Now I'd heard about the carrot and I have to admit it's true. I'm not a fan of carrots, but I was wiling to go for seconds on this fine specimen.
So give Bob's a whirl next time you're in the mood for some steak. You never know what you might have been missing out on all this time.
Wow--I can't believe I never wrote a review after I had my birthday dinner here; the place was fantastic!
When we walked in, I just loved the ambiance of this place. It just reeks of money and great steaks..dark wood...low lighting...middle-age servers - all the things you want to see when your boyfriend is taking you out.
Although we had a reservation, we had time for one drink at bar (which I typically prefer because you get to meet more people and see more of the restaurant). I ordered champagne, and it was fantastic.
We sat in a cozy booth where our server was really knowledgable about all of the items on the menu. We started out with the sauteed mushrooms. They were unbelievably giant and equally as delicious. Yum. Unfortunately, I am one of those people that get full extremely easily - so we skipped on the salad. Who cares?
On to the only part most people care about...the part that is so amazing it makes the ambiance reek....yes, THE STEAK. My boyfriend ordered Ribeye while I had the 9 oz Filet Mignon (medium-rare). Man--I totally out-ordered him. If you've ever seen "What About Bob?" then you will completely understand how I was moaning with every single bite I took! The sad thing is that I'm not even exaggerating! I couldn't help it---every bite brought me so much pleasure that my body couldn't handle it and was forced to moan. As long you care about tasty pleasure more than graceful appearances, go to Bob's and the Filet medium-rare.
After my Harry met Sally moment, we went on to dessert. The creme brulee is served cold...the taste is good, but I like it better hot. We ended the evening with Frangelica as our "after-dinner" drink which was the perfect ending.
Moral: yay steak!
Don't really see what the hype is all about with this place. The steak isn't bad but nothing to carry on about. Has a cruise vibe to it - not the ship but the looking-to-get-laid kind. There were TVs showing a Mavs game which I thought was tacky. I unplugged the TV behind me and watched the grown men squirm uncomfortably without saying an effing word. Gesh, go to Hooter's if you want to watch the game! Time and a place, people.
Dakota's is better for steak, actually.
Bob's on Saturday night was the perfect end to a long holiday weekend. The vibe was warm and cozy, the holiday decor and the cold weather creating the perfect mood for red wine and a great steak.
The service is great - we had a table of 10 and everyone was seen to without delay, which is saying a lot with this crowd. Red and white wine on the table, cocktails coming from the bar and even water never got low.
Dinner was amazing - you can't go wrong with anything on the menu (even if you order the fried shrimp - how do you come to Bob's and NOT get a steak??)
Entrees come with sides, which is unusual for most upscale steakhouses in this city - the glazed carrot is a trademark but not to be taken for granted. Other sides are served family style, although the potatoes that come with the steaks are a generous portion so you could easily skip the creamed corn (but I wouldn't recommend it, as it's my favorite!)
Desserts are meant to be shared, and won't disappoint, although I do prefer my creme brulee to be served warm :(
My favorite thing about Bob's, besides the obvious, are the thoroughbreds that cover every wall, along with notes from various trainers and jockeys from around the world sending Bob their good wishes. I'm guessing Bob has a few ponies at the track? Either way, it lends a classy, old school feel to the joint.
This ain't hibiscus, with scantily clad twenty year olds teetering around the bar in heels trying to catch the attention of the sugar daddies with bulging eyes (and pockets) - this is Bob's....where a table of 35 year old guys in jeans and blazers cheered loudly for Oklahoma State in between delicious bites of bone in ribeyes next to a table where a stately couple celebrated their 50th anniversary with a bottle of bordeaux and a couple of perfectly seared filets.
If you want the best steak in Dallas in a no-frills atmosphere, where they're not playing techno in the background and you dont need a flashlight to see your menu, get yourself over to Bob's.
Best steak in Dallas. Its a tradition to go here with my high school friends when we are all back in town.
Its at the top of my Dallas recommendations list for people visiting from out of town.
I came here because 1) i hadn't had a steak in Texas yet 2) everyone recommended it 3) i saw the good reviews on Yelp 4) we were celebrating a birthday 5) I was craving a dirty vodka martini.
When i passed it from the outside, it actually reminded me of a pawn shop. No windows, bars, on a non-descript corner. However, the inside was very classy, dark wood, white tablecloths, older men dressed in sportscoats, just as a steak house should look on the inside. It was also perfectly "cozy" because it was pretty cold outside.
The only thing that threw me off were the TVs in every corner. I think that's a Texas thing though (TVs showing sports in every restaurant/bar), and just something i have to get used to.
As for the food:
1. Pickle and peppers jar - awesome. The pickles were amazing - huge, crisp, and not too briny. LOVED it.
2. Dirty martini (2) - totally deelish, went down easy, and lots of olives
3. Blue cheese salad - very cold, very crisp, and lots of good blue cheese
4. Filet - Very thick, tender, and just the right amount of red on the inside
5. Creamed spinach - YUCK. not creamy or buttery, and it came with a thick parmasean crust on top. I did not understand the creamed spinach
6. Glazed carrot - interesting garnish on the plate, and quite tasty. But i wasn't blown away.
All in all, it was a very favorable and satisfying steakhouse experience!! I'm very glad i was not disappointed, and the service was great.
Bob's is good. If you want a steak, you have as good a chance as any to have the best steak in Dallas. Of course, you could also get a strip of rawhide and one, big, "I couldn't give less of a crap" look from your waitress. It just depends on the night.
I will say, when they get it right... it can't be beat. I've ordered everything on the menu a couple of times. My recommendation is stay w/ the steak. The other's not bad, it's just, well, you're at Bob's.
The sides are good. A lot of people bitch about the sliced potatoes, but I actually like them. They have about a 10 minute shelf life, so eat 'em hot. After that they turn into a slimy gravy mess. The carrot is pretty nasty. I always ask to leave it off.
The desserts are nothing to write about, so I won't.
It seems that Bob's is great for the expense account, convention, out-of-town crowd. They're always there in mass. There's always a celeb or 2. Any given night you could be having a steak next to Dirk or some other hot shot.
The waitresses are hired to keep the steaks moving. They aren't bad or good. The wine list is very corporate account steak house.
My final thoughts. Bob can make a great steak; maybe even the best (occasionally). However, it's really loud and really big. There's nothing personal about Bob's. It's that "perfect steak moment", that I've had a couple of times, that gets me to return, when all I want is a big, fat steak. Good luck...
I'm a steak girl. I like nice restaurants and I like good food.
Although driving by the Lemmon location may look sketchy, it is not. It has a lot of class. Just notice the cars in valet. These people don't play.
The steaks are awesome! Cooked to perfection and dear God the carrot (yes carrot) that they serve with your steak is heaven. It's a crack carrot I swear!
Always good service and always a great meal.
If you are a celeb stalker, go on a night when the Cowboys have a home game or there is a Mavs game going on. Last time I was in, Tony Parker and Eva Longoria sat at the table next to us. And I have been told Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson frequent the place.
But PLEASE...do not be tacky and pull out a camera if you see them. Have some damn class!
You got to love Bob's. It is a classic.
Someone else said "dark and cozy", i would actually say it is almost too dark, I always wish they would turn up the lights just a tad.
I personally like a couple of the other steakhouses in town a bit more. But if Bob's wasn't in the heart of steakhouse country, it would be the best steakhouse in any number of other cities.
The filet basically melts in your mouth. Most of the sides are awesome. You really can't go wrong at Bob's.
By far one of the best steaks, service I have ever recieved. The place is pretty upscale and pretty pricey but TOTALLY worth it. The Best Steaks in whole Dallas!!!
One of the best filet mignons I tasted in my life was at Bob's. Ordered the filet butterflied with some peppercorn on top, and it was phenomenal. Service was great, the noise level is slighter louder than Morton's. Excellent wine selection as well. Tried the meritage there, and it went well with the steak. There's a rich, full aroma to it. Depending on the particular blend, it can be blackberry, black cherry, spices, chocolate, and vanilla.
So I was told this was the best steak in town. I was thoroughly disappointed. Don't get me wrong it was a good steak but it did not live up to the hype. If I wanted an expensive date I would much rather go to chamberlain's any day.
You can't really tell that this is a nice steakhouse inside. But once you got inside, it's that nice dark wood setting.
Service was amazing, water was filled right when we sat down. The bread was toasty. I had the rib-eye, it was PERFECT (I basically inhaled that steak down). I also had some of the mushroom and the cream spinach.
Everybody in my party enjoyed their dinner. Price was reasonable for a good steakhouse. It was a great fun!
You gotta love it when the Boss watches the store almost every night. Bob's kicks out a true PRIME steak cooked on one of those million degree broilers. Crispy outside, rare inside. Wow.
The Blue cheese salad is a beast. Shredded iceberg lettuce, eggs, bacon, gorgonzola blended perfectly. I often eat it as my entree.
Start with the Shrimp Romolade. 6 big ole suckers bathed in New Orleans pink. The perfect opening item.
The bar gets packed. The bread is so good, you'll probably steal room from your main course. 80% of the people leave with a takehome bag.
There's plenty of steak joints and many are good. Bob's is truly a great Dallas institution and pleasantly more Park Cities friendly that the showcase places like Del Frisco's or Al Bernats.
Trust me, you'll leave fatter, fuller and a fan. (I only wish the valet was just rolled into the cost!)
Dear God I love red meat, you know how people say if you eat to much red meat it will kill you, well I say okay and it's worth it if you go to Bob's Steak and Chop House.
Man do these guys know how to kill a cow! I even eat my carrot! Don't know what I'm talking about, then I guess you need to find out for yourself, Oh don't ask for steak sauce, I went with a friend who asked for Heinz 57 and the waitress looked at him like he just donkey punched an infant baby in the face. She actually said "You're kidding right?" No he wasn't... what a waste of a great piece of meat, not the waitress the steak. Next time I drop that dumb-ass at The Sizzler.
Remember if you grab a handful of sour balls walking out the door, don't leave'em in your shirt pocket, screws up all your whites in the wash.
I came here when I visited my friend who moved to Dallas couple years ago. I had the filet and still to this day, I think that was the best filet mignon I've ever had. The sides were good, but standard. The place was packed from what I remember, and all the patrons dining there had their eyes glued to the TV screens watching the Cowboys play! At first, I thought this was a bit odd because I'm from California. But then I realized where I was and knew it was time to pay homage to the football gods and its loyal followers!
Great steaks, and fillet m, Good service, tender and they know how to do steaks..
Id take anyone here for a good dinner..
I love the legacy location as well..
Definitely love Bob's, the grapevine location doesn't have the history of the Lemmon location but makes up for it in its newer and nicer build out. Definitely go with the filet, getting anything else there just doesn't make sense.
I've only been here once but did thouroughly enjoy my steak. My fiance ordered fish and wasn't as thrilled..but I say that's what you get for ordering fish at the Chop House.
It was pretty loud and it was hard to have a conversation at our table. No complaints at the service or food though!
Definitely a good place if you are looking for a nice, big, and juicy steak. And when we went, Tony Romo was there as well.
It is hard to imagine going wrong at the steakhouse that defines Dallas steakhouses. I tend towards the filet, but sometimes go out of my way for a ribeye. It doesn't really matter, though, because they bring your beef slathered with butter and heaven dust.
The carrot is nice, as are the pickles they serve you as a mini app. If you want to gorge, order the onion rings for an appetizer. Just be sure you have 4 other people (minimum) to help finish off that place. You will want to leave room for your delicious meat.
As for other menu items, my brother (a cook by trade), says the duck is exceptionally well-prepared in the Classic style. I can confirm it is quite tasty. But, look, you're at Bob's, so unless you eat here often, get yourself a damn steak.
Service is almost always top notch, and you are more likely than not to see some of Dallas' celebrity scene at some point. I'm not sure I'm sold on them having TVs all around the joint, but whatever, I'm there to eat and I do like to know what's happening in the game.
Never thought I'd rave about a carrot.
Visited Dallas to go to a Cowboy game and had to hit up a steakhouse. People talked about the carrot and man was it good. The ribeye was great, cooked rare like requested. Quality of the beef was great. I'm glad we chose this place. Come to find out there is one in San Francisco so can't wait to have the carrot again.
Handsome, intimate interior. Top-notch bartenders produce some of the best martinis you will ever taste. The steaks are world-class and as a regular diner at Bob's, one of its most attractice features is the consistency of turning out steaks exactly as ordered, day after day.
Andy, the sommelier, is an outstanding wide resource and can find a bottle to suite any taste.
Their filet is outstanding; I recommend Pittsburg style medium rare if you like a little char/crunch on one side while having a perfect internal temperature. The calamari appetizer is as good as you'd expect to find in an upscale seafood restaurant (perfect battering and cook time). Their wedge salad is hard to beat.
Bob's only fault is their valet service seems to be discombobulated and slow when you're trying to get out of there. Hopefully they will switch valet companies of these days.
I eat steak like a man. I love it. If I could, I would eat it every night. Bob's is a mans steakhouse. I love the decor. Dark, woody, with a big bar to drink man drinks. I wanted to order scotch, until my husband reminded me that I hate scotch. So, I had a Lemon Drop.
I was really excited to go here: I had been begging to go to the King Steak House in Dallas since I moved here. They opened one in San Francisco before I moved and I refused to go because I wanted THIS one. The OG.
Maybe the hype killed it for me. My steak was good. Really good. Not great. I liked the carrot. I liked the sides. But for the money, it's just simply NOT the best steakhouse in Dallas. I like Del Friscos and Rick Steins better. Someone mentioned Mastros in Beverly Hills - now THAT was the best steakhouse I've ever been to.
I'd like to give 3 1/2 stars, but I was pretty impressed with the service.
The food was okay but I'm big on atmosphere and again. I don't really care for something that feels so uptight and is overly expensive to boot.
Addendum (5/4/2008): I just had my second visit to Bob's on Saturday night and it just doesn't compare to Texas de Brazil. I asked for my filet to be cooked medium and it looked as if they'd just butchered the cow. Not to mention that the meat was REALLY tough to cut. I mean, I was shaking the table trying to cut the meat with the knife they gave me. Not a good thing for those of us who are currently orthodontically challenged let me tell ya. It wasn't even properly seasoned.
Their saving grace: fantastic smashed potatoes. I just can't see going there for anything else.
This place has the greatest steak ever created. The meat basically melts in your mouth. The meat is fresh, the spices are terrific but do not overpower the flavor of the meat, the steak is juicy, and they cook the steak perfectly to order. One of my biggest pet peeves with steakhouses is when the overdo a steak that you order. I've been to Bob's multiple times and they've always cooked the steak perfectly. Each steak comes with a honey-glazed carrot, which sounds ordinary, but is in fact terrific. But be careful not to eat the carrot too quickly since it comes out at about 1billion degrees so I've burned my tongue on the carrot on multiple occasions. The sides are excellent and generous as well. Multiple people can split each side, and I recommend the creamed spinach. It comes with melted cheese on top that little extra goodness.
The exterior of the restaurant doesn't really look that great. It is a plain building with a green awning that almost looks like a sports bar, but as soon as you enter the place it looks like your typical steakhouse with the dark wood and rich old men with their young trophy wives.
I highly recommend this place to everyone who goes to Dallas. It is a little expensive, but in my opinion, it is well worth the price. You will be hard pressed to find a steak that is better than the one at Bob's.
Excellent Food (A+), Service Excellent (A+), Atmosphere (B)
Great food and service. Atmosphere is a bit crowded and loud.
If you like steaks, you must go to this restaurant.
Whole bunch of my co-workers went to Bob's Steakhouse for a dinner. We had 10 people so we were seated in group area of the restaurant. We had to complain about the table since it was very small and all of us had no rooms to move ! . Hostess was useless in resolving it. She kept just stating this was their standard table for 10 people. We finally got them to add another table so we would have more space. Also, one warning if you sit in the big group area. THEY ARE LOUD !!!! It was literally ear deafening experience ! People had to literally shout to get any conversation going.
Steak was good but not worth the cost. I've had better steaks elsewhere.
I will not be visiting them any time soon.
I love a great steak house. This is not great, just ok. There is real wood paneling and old pictures on the wall. The bar is filled with men if you are a single girl (cougar) I assume you hang out here at night. The steak was average. Normal sides. Strange carrot on the dish. Customers around us were rude - pick another place if you have a chance and run to it.
High priced? Yes. Good steaks. Yes. Feels like Brooklyn.
I finally tried this place last weekend for a special birthday. I really wasn't that impressed.
The drinks were fantastic and the service was excellent. But I didn't think the food cut it for the price. Yes the decor is lovely and it wasn't particularly noisy when we went, but I just can't get over the food. The steak was on par, but the sides were only so-so. I'd rather go elsewhere in town when it comes to steak.
Excellent dining experience. The inside feels like a good old boys club, but the good old boys knew how to cook steak, or enjoy it at least. Quite possibly the best steak and potatoes I've ever had.
I've heard rumors that Emmitt Smith can be seen eating there.
