One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
OMG. How have I lived next to you and not been to you yet? Forgive me? Can we still be friends? Maybe with benefits?
For a to go sub this place is hands down your best option in the medford/tufts area. A lot of really nice options, chicken, veal, steak, etc. So many good things you can't go wrong.
It's a small shop so knowing a head of time what you want will make the trip the easiest the staff is there to work. They want your order and they want it now. So don't dilly dally. They have their full menu on their website and have daily specials.
The deli and butcher area looks amazing I could easily swing by there and get stuff for dinner. Delicious protien and carbs. Mmmm nom nom nom.
Bob's really makes me feel like I am in the city. It has a very urban set up. So I hope to gov them lots of business in the future.
Ps their steak fries rock. Mmmm.
They ah... Well, they got a bunch of stuff... And so far it's ALL good.
Subs bigger than your head. Portion sizes well worth their prices... You can make a meal or two or three out of what you get...
And to top it off, the groceries can recharge your pantry with all sorts of Italian goodness. A big plus for Bob's - they have a fantastic cold drink selection that includes Cherry Coke.
Living down the street from Bob's is both a blessing and a curse. The subs are amazing: huge, fresh and delicious! The ckn parm, eggplant parm and basil, mozz, tomato & prosciutto subs are some of my favorites. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge!
The pizza is pretty good but not the best. The marinated meats, fresh breads, wonderful assortment of sides are all great for making a dinner on the fly. The service has always been fast and friendly. Its a great place to find specialty items such as capers, olives and packaged sweet treats.
Definitely worth a stop over if your in the area. Get a sub to go....you won't be disappointed!
The absolte best cold cuts out there. I bring an antipasto to every italian family gathering, and they go wild. The sopresetta and sharp provolone cheese are TO DIE FOR. And the pepedews - YUM! And all of their pasta salads are incredible with huge chunks of meats and cheeses and veggies. AMAZING!
Love this place. Love it. Best subs in the area. I am not lying when I say this place is the main culprit as to why I put 40 pounds back on in a year. The Italian Sub is the best I have ever had anywhere. I don't know if it is the fresh bread or what it is, but it is fantastic. All of their dinners: steak tips, chicken parm, ravolis are great. They always give you a ton of food and often times the owner Bob is walking around helping you.
Also, as others have mentioned, their grill meats are really good as well. They have many different marinades for steak, chicken and turkey tips. They also make their own sausages. Definitely try the strip steak. It is not a lot of money, and for the quality, you would think you were eating a $30 steak.
My girlfriend once commented that I seem to be the 'happiest' when I am here. It is probably an accurate observation.
Best food and prices in the area - hands down.
ok, do not get the largest size of sub sandwich. No one can finish it. That said, every time we go, we order the large because we LOVE their chicken parm and meatball subs. They use what looks like a modified scali loaf and cut it in half horizontally and fill it with enough filling to feed four for dinner. You feel excited and ashamed at the same time when they hand it to you.
They also sell Italian grocery items, meat, fresh bread, prepared foods (hot and cold). It's all very tasty but a tad pricey if you are on any kind of budget. But once in a while, tell yourself you are worth it and pick up a freshly made chicken parm sub with provolone and homemade sauce. I am drooling.
This is one of the best places I have ever eaten! The steak tips are to die for, they have the best arancini balls I have ever had (even better than my Italian grandmother's recipe, which says a lot!) Everything I have ever eaten there has been great. I lived out in Western MA for a few years and this was the place I missed the most! I am glad to be living near it again - The only downside is that its not super cheap and I always end up spending more money than I planned because everything is so good. But it is worth it.
Note that I never complained about the food at this place, it was the service I felt was lacking. Well, the owner reached out to me and provided a public explanation of the reason for the issue I encountered and, owing to his personal attention to the matter, this place regains its 4 star rating in my book.
Great food, classy owner.

i can't really write a review about everything they sell, because i've only been there for their subs. Pretty big subs, they're alright. The selection of products from italy, the deli, the salads, it all looks delicious, but i haven't had anything but subs as i said, and for that, 3 stars.
Went to Bob's today and were very disappointed in their Steak & Cheese sub and Pepper, Egg and cheese sub.
The steak & cheese was thick like cube steak cut into pieces and had an odor that was not very good. The pepper, egg & cheese had green peppers cut SOOO BIG they were awful and the egg was cooked with too much oil on the grill.
TOO bad J& S in Somerville had to retire.
This place seem to be a busy clean place. I was in there around Christmas time early morning when they first opened and there were more mice running around then people. I went back i few more times since then. Yesterday was my last. The men behind the sub counter sweating touching there face and hair and the butcher with no gloves.Twenty minutes to get a steak tip sub.I will say that this place does appear to be very well organzied as for the variety of shelf products.
Say you have a friend from Chicago, you want to explain how New England Italians are different than any other Italians in the world: Take them to Bobs. This food store has a fresh deli, sandwich shop and carries Italian specialty items that can be some what hard to come by. It has a family run feel to it, which make you feel all warm and fuzzy. The cheese stuffed hot peppers are unique and flavorful, while the huge sub sandwiches will cause you to find yourself driving down main street Medford for a repeat trip. Even the chicken salad is a winner. (get it on a braided bulkie)
This place would get 5 stars based soley on the fact that I FINALLY FOUND SOMEWHERE WITH SALT PACKED CAPERS!!! You know not what a search I had been on to find them. I looked at every grocery store, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, even at Wegmans (I was at the one in Syracuse a few weeks ago). Nobody had them. Nobody. Yes I could have ordered them online but it would cost more in shipping than the actual capers.
So in my laid off state, I have quite a bit of time on my hands so one day on my way home from the gym I decided to check out Bob's Italian Food Store. My sister used to live in Medford and she raved about the place, so I figured I'd stop by. I was ecstatic to find out they had salt packed capers. Ecstatic I tell you!
So I bought some capers, and also some porcini mushroom ravioli and annisette Italian cookies. Yummy in my tummy. I cooked the ravioli with some portabello spaghetti sauce from Wegmans and added some of my capers, and it was fantastic.
I have to be fair and say everyone I know loves this place.
I personally think it's okay, I really don't like the bread. Otherwise the food is really good.
However, the staff attitude and hygiene leave a lot to be desired. I'm not finicky about cleanliness, but these guys are filthy and sweating all over the sandwiches. Not the most polite people you'll ever meet, either.
Great subs and marinated meats to take home and grill. Bob usually there and a nice guy with a smile for everyone. Very crowded at lunch so be prepared to wait like cattle for 15 mins. Street parking can be difficult but its well worth a visit.
Awesome sandwiches. Great selection of Italian items. Large prosciutto and mozzarella is my favorite, about $7.50 or so, but they pack on about $12 worth of prosciutto!
Funny story... one of the last time's I was there with my brother, the guy behind the counter was all excited about my brother's Marines t-shirt, and was so anxious to know if he had killed anyone in Iraq. He asked it right in front of one of the lady's that works there, she was impressed!
So Good!
Whether you are going for groceries or a quick bite to eat - this place is phenomenal!
The food is fresh - not to mention spectacular. They have a lot of rare foods and homemade pastas, breads and meats. The portions are huge and if you are a health nut - this might not be the place for you. This is a place where you get meals that make you want to nap afterwards - perfect rainy day food! Although they gripe about it, they do cater to food allergies (lactose..not sure about gluten and wheat)
the staff is light hearted (for the most part - they are impatient with people who are indecisive!) and fun.
It is a bit pricey but worth it!
Bob's does NOT mess around. A small chicken parm sub is so big that it makes me think that they are living in a different world than every other food establishment today. I can only imagine how ridiculous a large is.
You pay a fairly high price for what you get, but it really is good. You could probably make multiple meals out of your order depending on what you get.
Word on the street is that the steak and cheese sub here is the best around. 4.5 stars. Who cares if it's in Medford? Go on a field trip...It's not far from Davis Square.
best subs around Medford / Somerville / Madlen area, probably the only shop I'm willing to write a review for.
I swear by the BBQ sausage sub, not sure if its homemade or not but its amazing with peppers and onions. Better than anything I've had around Fennway. Others I know swear by the steak tips...but I cannot vouch for those even though they look awesome.
My advice is to call ahead and pick up...much quicker for lunch
.
This place used to be really great for catering - but last weekend we got a salad and the tomatoes were barely red on the outside and were WHITE and tasteless on the inside - my wife had to go to Whole Foods to get something better. Yikes!
Bob's is an absolute gem of an Italian food market, and is often my go-to place for getting items for parties and gatherings. It is a throwback of a place (and indeed, all of South Medford is a throwback), having the sights, sounds, and smells of another era. Their homemade pastas are exquisite; their sauces are also outstanding; and their sandwiches are better than most you'll get in nearby sub shops.
To me, there is nothing like walking into Bob's around Christmastime with snow on the ground and the smells of garlic, bread, and cheese hitting me as I go through the door. A must-visit spot for anyone who likes Italian food...
Had take out lunch here again today and it was awesome. Prosciutto with fresh mozz and tomatoes. They dressed it perfectly with balsamic and oil, and lots of chopped fresh basil. Absolutely delicious. The roll was above average. The portion was very generous for the price. Yeah. Bob's for sandwiches. Do it.

Good for lunch, a quick dinner or just to pick up a few things for a meal to make at home. This is a fantastic Italian food market! If you want a real treat, try the Chicken Parmesan Sub. But keep in mind that the bread is freshest around noontime, around dinner the bread is just okay.
Their selection of sliced meats is wonderful. I usually stick with the Spicy Soprassatta, but you're safe with almost everything over the counter, and the service is always quick and kind.
Enjoy!
This place is great!! Ive been going their for years. The sandwiches are extremely well made. I got a chicken parm it could have feed 2 people.
I hosted a simmer party and bought all the meat and cold cuts. The women working the deli went to great lengths to properly layer my meats!!
I was on a search for catering on a budget for my budget conscience wedding. I found Bob's on Yelp, saw good reviews, saw it was in Medford (very convenient to me) and decided to mosey on down to check them out.
I first went there to try some of their food for lunch just to see if it was good. Well, let me tell you, this place is popular during lunch on a Saturday! It is part store, part deli. The store part sells lots of Italian food items from bread to pasta to sauces etc.... Although I didn't try any of these items, it seemed like pretty good stuff at fairly decent prices.
The deli part was where the chaos was. There was a very long line for the sandwiches which I took as a good sign. I ordered a sandwich with ham, salami, veggies etc... There isn't a place to sit inside so be prepared to take your food elsewhere. I ate it in the car and it was messy! But the sandwich tasted great and was very fresh so I felt comfortable using their catering. We chatted with the manager about it for a bit, but then went back home and I ordered over the phone later.
Their website is very user friendly when looking at their catering. All of the options and pricing is laid out which made it easy for me to order when I called. I placed my order 2 months in advance even though they said I could order a week before. I got an option that had wraps of various kinds (vegetarian, ham & salami, turkey, tuna salad etc....). The option also came with tortellini salad. I then ordered pastries such as eclairs, cookies, brownies, and creme puffs. To feed 50 people it came to $600. (I had SOOOO much food left over from my wedding. Oops. Better to over-order than under-order I guess).
The day arrived, they remembered our order, got it right, and all went well. The wraps I thought were very good. The desserts weren't the best, could have been better, but did the job anyway.
So, Bob's is a great store, deli and caterer. Great low cost catering option for us that worked out beautifully!
Everything we have got here was very good. The service is great and the products are wonderful. The subs are huge and delicious. Check it out!
Awesome!!
The subs are yum! and unbelievable!
They have everything there from Pasta Dinners to Grilled Subs.
Steak Tips, and Chix Tips are awesome!! The subs are huge..If you get a jumbo sub, good luck finishing it!
Great place to grab cold cuts or food for a BBQ. They have great homemade pasta, sauces, and salads.
Best place around!!
MAN. This place is great. I've been going here since 1997, the food is incredible. I measure other deli/italian shops by Bob's. It's that good. Make sure to get the prosciutto and cheese stuffed hot peppers from the deli, the sicilian slices are delicious, and anything from the subshop will be sure to delight from Eggplant subs to steak bombs.
I'm drooling writing this review from LA. Miss you Bob's.
This review is for their sandwich platter ONLY.
I ordered a platter of sandwiches for my coworkers. It was a pretty simple order: I asked for two vegetarian sandwiches out of 8, we discussed grilled vegetables. I was told that all our sandwiches came with lettuce and tomato. I was told this would all be ready at 11:30am. I decided to do a pick-up, because delivery is $25 (since we were less than a mile away, this seemed outrageous to me).
As far as I could tell, there was no loading area for the place, so I had to drive around looking for parking (not an easy feat at lunchtime). When I walked in the door, the woman at the register handed over my order slip to an elderly gentleman. She turned to another customer and said "we have to keep him busy." He was very slow to come back with my platter. When I got the platter to my coworkers, and realized that there were no veggie sandwiches, and no lettuce or tomato (unless you count the sickly looking tidbits surrounding, but not on the sandwiches).
The meat, bread and cheese were just fine - but not giving me what I ordered just wasn't acceptable. I didn't have time to correct the error, but I was really disappointed.
I'm giving it two stars, because it looked like a great place to go if you've got some time to kill on your lunch hour. Specialty Italian cookies, delicious looking entree and sub options. . . but they really shouldn't call it "catering" if it takes so much effort to get food for a group of 8 people.
Before people come down on me for besmirching a beloved Medford establishment - I'm open to going back, trying it again, and editing this review.
Bob's rules! They have a fantastic selection of meats and other stuff, including some kickass macaroni salad. The sandwiches are huge and nicely toasted. The steak tips are some of the best I've ever had. The prices are reasonable. You can't really go wrong with Bob's. It's the perfect place to go stock up before a BBQ.
Bob's is awesome. Awesome. When I graduated and started working 3 towns away I still had to make an occasional Bob's run. For years I didn't stray from my marinated steak tip sub. SO good. But they really do have other quality menu items, and a very good looking butchery.
Plus it's the home of the six foot sub. "Six feet?" you say. "That's insane." you say. Not insane, six feet of deliciousness... they serve it to you on a plank, how good is that?
Put it to you another way, I brought my buddy to Bob's and after that he tried 3 times unsuccessfully to find the place himself. Three times! Okay yes, number one, that's sad. But number two that's indicative of how good this place is.
Their pasta is handmade, their bread is locally baked (La Cascia's (sp) down the street - SO good, and I don't even like bread), the ingredients are good and fresh, the people working there are nice (although the cooks can be surly... not that I blame them with so many people crowding them, calling out what they want, and grabbing at the orders... Hint, never leave an order for John - there's always like three of them ordering at any given time. Leave an order for Ivan or Hulk Hogan or something. You'll be happy for it later)
Great value = huge sandwiches, high quality, and reasonably priced.
They have a huge selection of all kinds of Italian foods. Their homemade calzones are outstanding and big enough for about 3 meals. The deli meats and other deli items are always great.
During the warmer months, pick up their homemade sausages or burgers or marinated tips and toss them on the grill...you won't be let down!
Luckily, I live right around the corner from this place!
While most people have reviewed Bob's for its subs, pastas, and other ready-to-eat foods, I'm reviewing it based on its selection of meats. I've been a lot of places, and Bob's has the BEST cuts of meat I have ever had. I'm particularly fond of the flank steaks, aka london broil steaks, that cook themselves on the grill...add a little salt, and I guarantee its one of the juiciest, most delicious steaks you'll ever have. Not to be forgotten are the spicy (or regular) pork sausages that come out delicious, not to mention Bobs' other varieties of cuts, including pre-marinated chicken, beef, etc etc.
I've personally never had a sub at Bob's, because it always seems out of the way to go for a sub. But if there's ever a BBQ, I never think twice about hauling ass to Bob's to pick up a couple steaks. Maybe next time I'm there I'll remember to try a sub too :)
This is the only place I can find good bread. If you know anywhere else where tasty bread is sold, please please let me know.
The sandwiches are huge, and yummy, yes.
But the real pull of this store is all of the specialty items it carries in stock: Italian goodies, homemade pastas/ravioli/lasagna, cheeses and sausages, oh AND THE YUMMY ARTISAN LOAVES. Sometimes they run out of the good bread though, and they also carry that puffy flaky kind of bread they use for their sandwiches, so be careful! :)
I drive from Stoneham for this place. Steak tip subs are the best. Even the bread is great, no generic sub rolls with no flavor there. Prices are a little above average, but justified and well worth it for the taste and size. I'm excited to try other items off the menu!
I'm so confused by the other reviews. I didn't try any of the prepared foods, which may well be good, but I won't go back to find out. There was an amazing selection of foods for sure, and the staff was REALLY nice and friendly.
However...
The subs we've had, Meatball Parm, and Turkey, were both dry, overcooked, and without any actual seasonings at all, i.e., flavorless. The bread was good, but only white was available.
I was so excited by the reviews, this is so nice and close to where I live... oh well :(
Bob's food is fresh and delicious! I love it all! Yummy, Yummy!
Hungry? In Meffa? DUH! Look no further... Bob's is clearly the best in town. I use them all the time for catering at work and have recently started sending meals to family and friends when they lose a loved one. Sure tastes better than a carnation! I highly recommend the Chicken Marsala and the oven roast potatos, a crowd pleaser every time! I have a staff of college students working for me and at least once a year I order one of those six foot subs, they're always a hit and totally yummie!
Today the boy and I were lazing around the house and he went out for a short list of things we needed. We are in the middle of a kitchen renovation and are without a stove/sink or any kitchen really at this point so his first thought was Bob's subs for everyone! Well.. he got there and the deli counter called.... it taunted him as did the fresh french bread. He brought home a whole assortment of cold cuts and some fresh bread to create sammy masterpieces! I always forget about Bob for the cold cuts but you do the math.... he sells subs, makes calzones constantly so the cold cuts never get a chance to sit around. The mortadella is amazing there, it's got pistachios in it!! YUM! The best part about the deli here is that they understand that coldcuts should always be sliced thin!!! There is nothing worse than opening a deli wrap and finding meats that were sliced with a hacksaw! None of that here!
If you're in the mood for something lighter try his salads. Again, this place is so busy that the food runs out the door so the salads are always nice and fresh and like everything they do... there's a ton in it!!! I try to split them if I can!!!
It can be confusing sometimes in there during a lunch hour when the place is packed but the key is not being shy... when they scream "who's next" belly up.... yell back... ""ME and I want a large steak tip with onions and provolone"!!! !
Great deli! Amazing sandwhiches. Nothing is better than picking up their steak tips and a bottle of Stubbs on the way home to grill.
