CLASSIC GLAZED DONUT!
That's all I have to say.
(oh, and cash only.) -
Review from Brian W.
Cake donuts... didn't really care for them before, and these weren't enough to convince me otherwise.
Holy crap though, the apple fritter is GOOD. Just the right amount of apple in it and on top, with the apple on top caramelized into a sugary perfection.
I honestly have not been impressed on previous visits, but that's probably because I never brought my cash (cash only!) for the apple fritter before! It was good enough to give a 4th star on that alone. -

Okay normally we don't get dessert, (oh, who am I kidding, we ALWAYS get dessert)! But today we decided to venture our and get our after-meal sugar concoctions at Bob's Doughnuts, which boasts on its from billboard the Best In LA. We had to see for ourselves..
We asked the counter what was good, she said the original glazed and the New Orleans style Beignet. So we had both.
I have to say while the Glazed was good, it doesn't compare to, like a Krispy Kreme. And although i hazard to guess that Bob's was around long before Krispy made it's way out to the West Coast, I still got to compare Apples to Apples and say Krispy reigns supreme.
As for the Beignet, I am impressed the it's assemblage is that of the true New Orleans tradition, diamond shaped with powdered sugar on top. It was satisfying yet forgettable.
Loved that we tried it, and if we were here in the morning, I'd probably get a coffee and doughnut here. But as a dessert, I'd skip it and go somewhere else.....

Now, I'm only providing my review based on what I ordered: the American blend coffee and New Orleans beignets...
I had just come back from a trip to New Orleans and was craving beignets, and my hubby and I stumbled upon Bob's at the Farmers Market. Now granted that I was not expecting anything 100% authentic because I realize that I would have to go back to NOLA to experience a real beignet, but the beignets at Bob's are not even close. The beignet was simply a plain donut with powdered sugar on top: way too dense to even remotely resemble an authentic beignet. Plus, the beignets were not made to order, but rather were sitting on display (which should have been my first red flag).
The coffee that we ordered was way too hot. My husband didn't realize that the coffee was so hot and he took a sip and immediately spit it out all over our table.
Needless to say, we won't be re-ordering coffee and beignets from Bob's again. Perhaps we need to try it again and have one of their more classic donuts, but definitely not the beignets. -

Bob's Coffee and Donuts is a Los Angeles staple. If you are in the mood for an apple fitter, then you must make your way over to the Farmers Market.Nothing else will do!
Have you been to the Farmers Market on Fairfax? It's famous. I started taking my loved ones to the Farmers Market soon after it opened in the 1930s, and now my loved ones take me there.
And everyone loves eating at the Farmers Market because each person can get whatever he or she wants. French crepes, Chinese noodles, Mexican tacos or American food at Dupar's.
But the one thing that everyone always agrees on is apple fritters from Bob's. Even if you are full from dinner you have to try them, and you have to take a few home for the next day.
An apple fritter is like adonut, but more sophisticated. Donuts don't have fruit in them, but apple fritters do. Don't be fooled by their weird and lumpy shape: apple fritters are wonderful. But they are not an everyday kind of thing. In fact, I call them do-nots instead of donuts. But if you are moderate like me on an everyday basis, then you can afford to indulge once in a while. So, enjoy your apple fritter, and the lively atmosphere of the original Los Angeles Farmers Market! -

It's the go-to spot when you're at the Farmer's Market. Beignets, apple fritters, old fashioned. The coffee's not too shabby either for a quick pick me up. It's an LA staple.

How about telling me the chocolate long john I just ordered is cream filled? Two bites and it was in the trash.

My dad took me and my brother here when we were wee tikes. I try to make a pilgrimage each time I visit. Everyone raves about the apple fritter (which is good), but I love the chocolate old fashioned.

Donut Heaven!
I love me some tasty, light, and perfectly fried dough.
We had a powdered covered, raspberry filled yumminess and I was in heaven.
The donut tasted fresh, and the balance of sweet and dough was just perfect.
I think the donut was a dollar or so.
I love the grove and all the options you are able to take advantage of. Bob's is definitely a placed I would frequent often. -

OMG best apple fritter ever. Hands down. No contest. OMG.
Ok, I'll try and explain. You might think it looks too dark, maybe burnt, BUT ITS NOT! They take a normal apple fritter, put chunks of beautiful yummy apple inside it and cook it just a little bit further than most people do. It comes out so caramelized and delicious it makes me want to drive back to LA just to get another one. We almost didn't get one...diet and all...but it was worth the calories! -

A little disappointed with their apple fritter it was very average tasting and burned to a crisp on top. The glaze on their donuts is sugary and heavy did i mention sugary. These donuts are average at best. Good coffee though.

Huge iconic donuts that are cold, boring, and so much worse than a fresh warm krispie kreme. Only a couple choices that by the end of the day (I guess 5 pm?) are mostly missing as are coffee varieties. Tried the recommended chocolate glaze and standard (what I use as my donut control groups as I test around). Not ridiculously expensive but they might as well call this place left down donuts. Whoever said Voodoo stinks in comparison is just an out right liar. Donut plant in NYC is also much better. The search for best LA donut continues...
For other foreigners or newbies, the "farmers market" has a bunch of clothing stores and pop up shops. It's on a back wall next to the ice cream shop. -

Black Coffee tastes the same as starbucks, but MUCH cheaper ($1.30), plus its organic.
The donuts here are pretty standard, but a little pricey. (95c each!)
I usually am not in love with apple fritters, but they are bomb diggity here! I would buy a dozen if my stomach could fit it, plus, they're healthy right? -

Plain glazed donut is awesome: nice, fluffy, light, perfect balance of sweetness as it takes you away to cloud nine.
Coffee, I've had better regular coffee at 7-Eleven. -

I have the occasional donut craving, and this is a decent stop. I like to keep it simple, and the soft chocolate raised donut was good ($0.95).

This place is suuuuper cute! Talk about a blast from the past (well, not my past, as I wan't born then.)
Envision something from the '50s or '60s and prices to match - almost. Doughnuts at 95 cents a pop and tea from just over $1.50 (and good tea - none of this Lipton stuff but a nice tea selection - 6 or so to choose from.) My kind of place!
Doughnuts are tasty, even at 7:00 p.m.
I'd say they are REAL doughnuts... not something mass-produced and scientifically engineered like Krispy Kreme (though, guilty, I am a fan of theirs, too).
Such a cute little place nestled in the Grove's Farmer's Market - lovely to people watch from the communal tables. -

I think these are the best donuts in LA.
Went here my first time visiting Los Angeles and totally understood how this is a donut town.
Anything chocolate here is my favorite. And the old-fashioned. Also, I believe they use real sugar and not HFCS. So that's nice for you farmer's market goers.
Dunk your donuts in their delicious coffee-- yum!Listed in: Sweet Tooth

Ever since I was a little girl I've been getting the pink kitty doughnuts. I'm 21. I still get excited when I open the bag.
Bobs doughnuts are simply delicious. The devils food cake rocks. For the young'ns, the young at heart, or the childish like myself they have dinosaur doughnuts for the boys and pink or brown kitty doughnuts for the girls (or visa versa, you don't have to live by ascribed gender rolls).
Bobs is a great place to stop by in the farmers market for a little sugar rush or after lunch/dinner treat.Listed in: The Grove / Farmers Market

Love!
Honey wheat chocolate glazed and beignets make a perfect Saturday morning. Just wish they were a little warmer...
Know what you want ahead of time and don't linger by the cash register looking and pointing because she will rush you and make you feel dumb.
But it's OK, these donuts are far superior in taste than my intelligence could ever be at 9 in the morning on a Saturday... -

Good, classic donuts, which are fairly fresh, and cute, family owned charm. Not gourmet, thse are the classics at a fair price. Coffee is okay, but I have definitely had better.

I rarely buy donuts that aren't fresh out of the fryer but bob's dinosaur shaped donuts win my heart. I believe the green frosting is actually "chocolate" and they are so cute and delicious that I could put them through extinction once again. Very friendly staff and very consistent flavors.

I'm not, strictly, a donut lover. Dunkin' Donuts? Meh. Krispy Kreme, fine I guess, but if it's my choice, let me get those sugar units somewhere else. VooDoo Doughnut in Portland? Sorry, but - trying too hard.
HOWEVER. Bob's donuts might be my favorite place in the universe to purchase eatables and drinkables. First of all, they have the best coffee I've ever had. Just from the pot, none of your fancy frappes (although they also make a pretty bombass frozen coffee treat, full of all kinds of deliciously questionably powders).
And the donuts. The donuts taste like Heaven. I've tasted all the kinds and all are divine. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY OTHER THAN THESE ARE THE BEST DONUTS IN THE WORLD. EAT THEM WITH A COFFEE. It's all in the name, y'all. -

I came back for the binYAYs...I saw powdered sugar covered things on the right so i told the girl, 'I'll take 4.'
'Sorry, we're out'
'What!?'
'Yeah, sold out early'
:(
I wouldn't be getting those crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside, powdered sugar pillows of goodness that seem to defy the laws of physics. A pastry so soft its like biting into a baby's butt....sigh.
Anyway, I ended up ordering:
raspberry filled donut that deceived me into thinking there were more binYAYs. glad I did too! It was like a raspberry preserve filled binYAY!
cinnamon roll - this was ok
coconut covered cake donut - ok
chocolate sprinkled devil's food - pretty good.
Got to remember to get here before noon for the good stuff! -
Review from James S.
4 1/2 years later, and Bob's still rules in my book. I like the surrounding area for people watching almost as much as I like the donuts.
The one thing that is a little tough to swallow is the price. Donuts just keep getting more expensive. I think 5 years ago, a standard donut was .65 compared to today at 1.20. In between, I recall a price of .95. Sure, everything goes up in price, but whoa! Granted, I don't have much to compare it to, as Bob's is generally where I go. (SK's has twice failed to impress me.)
The chocolate/chocolate as well as the regular chocolate donut are both still great. The 'Dino' donut (green, shaped like a dinosaur) has gotten smaller --- which is a good thing. It was too big. They also now sport a more feminine kiddie donut, the pink kitty cat. This was received well. Everyone is welcome at Bob's.Listed in: Positively Third Street, Ten Great Breakfasts

I have this reoccurring nightmare that every time I come to this place, they're all out of beignets. And sad to say, the past two times I've been here, they were sold out for the rest of the day :(
I do. I understand why it's such a hit. It's very nostalgic of Disneyland beignets, and Downtown Disney beignets. The confectioner sugar is so dreamlike, and adds just the perfect touch to something so simple. But why don't you restock, Bob? And why must you place the powdered jelly donuts in the same exact place you had the beignets once they're all sold out? I get fooled each and every time and it breaks my heart each and every time.
#1 tip - Come early. Get first dibs. Wear a bib (Confectioner sugar = your favorite black t-shirts WORST nightmare). And heck, buy 20 just so you know you've got half of the only batch they're going to be making for the rest of the day. -

Bob's powdered doughnuts are the best. Don't forget to wipe your mouth, or else you'll be walking down the grove looking like tyrone biggums.

I've decided to establish this rating strictly on taste alone as I have an update from my first review. So please bear in mind this does not necessarily reflect the quality of service. I just went there this morning (long drive) to grab donuts for my kids class parties and the attitude from one particular girl was really awful. To make matters worse I ran into the owner and attempted to explain how short she was for me for no reason and it didn't seem he too much cared. Thumbs down Bob. Of course towards you, the owner, the employees are stellar. But try dressing up in a disguise and see how that goes after trial and error.

Review from Mark D.
On recent business trips to LA, I have dropped by Bob's numerous times to pick up doughnuts for midnight snacks. They keep me going as I work late into the night in my hotel room.
It is very handy. I pick up carry-out dinner from one of the other places in the Farmer's Market. Then stop by Bob's to get a couple of doughnuts.
I really enjoy their glazed doughnuts. They are super sugary goodness. For me, their glaze is perfect. I wish they were near my home. The would be perfect for pan re-fried doughnuts. I also dig their chocolate covereds. I've had their cinnamon roll, apple fritter, and chocolate covered bar. They were all good.
My only complaint is that by the evening when I get there the pickin's can be slim. Sometimes, they do not even have any glazed left.
The staff is always friendly and the doughnuts are always good. -

This place has been around forever. My grandma's favorite donut place ever (RIP grandma, I love you). I would go out of my way to come here and buy her a dozen mixed. It always made her happy.
The apple fritters are ridiculuos - you will never find one like it at a chain. Donuts are not in style anymore but this place survives. If you find yourself in Farmers Market and crave something sweet, forget the crepes and get an old fashioned donut - it will remind you of when you were a kid! -

This is the only place to get donuts in LA! Besides the fact that it has been here forever, it's at the Farmers Market! The only problem is that they sell out of my favorites early and some times I can't get there til after work.
I love the chocolate covered buttermilk, after getting a great donut you can go to bents for ice cream and mix the donut in with the homemade ice cream. Yes sugar, sugar sugar. But sometimes you just gotta do it. -

Holy cow... these doughnuts are absolutely amazing. I can't believe how perfect the texture is of every doughnut I've tasted (I've tasted 6). Here are the reviews of what I've had here:
Regular glazed - Amazing. I felt like I was tearing apart a pillow of sugary, warm goodness. It was almost like cotton candy in its texture.
White glazed (? I don't know what it's actually called, but it's an old-fashioned cake donut drenched in white icing) - Very good. Surprisingly not too sweet. The texture was slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Chocolate glazed with chocolate sprinkles - Not too rich, and the texture was just like that of the white glazed doughnut.
Chocolate glazed with rainbow sprinkles - Delicious as well. Not too different from the chocolate doughnut with chocolate sprinkles (obviously just not as chocolaty).
Cinnamon roll - This was warm, big, and sweet - just like a teddy bear fresh out of the dryer. A bit buttery. I hate the taste of butter, and even I liked this. This could have used a bit more cinnamon, though.
Maple glazed - Just the right amount of maple glaze and perfect texture.
I was pretty disappointed when I found this place and learned that there were no beignets. I think I came over too early; I arrived to the Farmers Market at around 7:00 A.M. The selection was really limited at the time, but thankfully, the doughnuts I did get made up for these limitations.
Another big con that keeps me from coming back here is the price. I spent nearly $14 for a dozen doughnuts. I can get a dozen doughnuts for $8 at California Donuts.
Other than that, the texture of the doughnuts here is absolutely amazing and makes the trip to Farmers Market and the parking there worth it.
