35 reviews for Bobbin's Nest Studio
Review Highlights
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I am a brand new knitter. Inspired by the novel The Friday Night Knitting Club, I checked out a book from local library (Stich N'Bitch) and taught myself to knit. After buying a set of needles and some inexpensive yarn from Michaels which I used to stich some test pieces, I wandered into Bobbin's Nest looking for some nicer yarn to knit my first scarf. Walking in the door, I was met by a friendly sales woman who offered me some peach tea. She let me wander around the store and touch the yarn while I got a sense of what they had, and she didn't hover while I did it. When I was ready to ask some questions, she was friendly and helped me find the perfect yarn and free pattern for a begining scarf. I was very impressed. I bought some yarn (which they cheerfully wound for me), bamboo needles, and some fabric. The fabric was a nice surprise. They have a limited selection but it is all beautiful. I love Amy Butler's fabric but often have a hard time finding in the rows of fabric in most quilting stores. So the nicely limited selection was much appreciated. This store is a bit out of my way, but I definitely plan to go back.
I'm a professional knitter and pattern designer who spends thousands of dollars annually on yarn and knitting supplies. And minutes into my first trip to the Bobbin's Nest won me over completely - hands down best customer service in the Bay Area!
Very friendly and very helpful staff. The owner, Erin, is just fantastic. I love that she always shares new things coming up and that I see her at all the big Bay Area craft/fiber events (Maker Faire, Stitches West, etc.). Their fabrics are lovely. And I find such gorgeous, gorgeous yarns there ... always! I never walk out empty handed and will be eternally loyal for all of the above, plus their willingness to do special orders.
Fantastic shop - definitely worth a visit!
Erin, the owner, really makes this shop! I would probably come more often if there was a bit of a wider selection, but the selection they do have, I don't really see at any of the other LYS's that I go to.
But anyway, Erin is the best! She might be the nicest yarn store person that I've ever met - I sometimes get employees or owners who are snobby, or they don't know much, or whatever, but Erin is great, and if you're a beginner visiting an LYS for the first time, I would recommend Bobbin's Nest, because Erin will totally make you feel welcome and help you find what you need without making you feel like a jerk for not being very experienced or knowledgeable.
Also... I'm not much into sewing, but I do love looking at the store's fabric selection. Beautiful stuff!
good stuff.
Has all the cute Amy Butler fabrics that I like, including the larger rolls of home deco weight.
Great selection of sewing books and patterns as well as cute embroidery kits.
A little pricey on the fabric, but what I pay for fabric online when i add shipping, so six-a-one, Half a-dozen the other...
This place is beyond wonderful...the atmosphere gets you into a crafty mood and the people are AWESOME. I didn't compare the prices really, but to have someone give you suggestions and chat you up is worth a lot after spending time in Joanns, Beverly's, and Michaels where the staff is rude, has no knowledge, and sometimes downright scary. There are too many little touches to even list that make this place special.
I am a fairly new knitter, and I didn't feel looked down up whatsoever...such a great feeling.
Wow! Every knitter and crocheter's dream all in one location! Thanks to my friend Jane L for pointing me in the right direction and suggesting this place!
My good friend Brandie S. has taken up lots of new crafts and sewing and crocheting have become a few of them. I thought the perfect gift for her birthday was a gift card here! (Now that I think about it...I hope she doesn't read this review before I give it to her this Saturday!! Brandie...close your eyes! hehe)
This cute little store is located a block from SCU. Very helpful woman rang me up today and told me a little about the store. They offer classes too and a huge array of yarn and fabric. Its more of a store for seasoned crafters but definitely a beginner will have loads of fun exploring everything here. They have the cutest little gits as well.
I can't wait for Brandie to get her gift and get to her crafting...maybe she will make me something! ;) And maybe she will inspire me to start sewing and crocheting again!
I stopped by for the sale and picked up some Anna Maria Horner fabric and the Betty Shopper pattern. What a great deal! Sales rock! Erin was pleasant as always. I showed up at around closing but didn't feel rushed by any of the employees. Every time I go to Bobbins, it has been a pleasant experience!
I went by Bobbin's Nest Studio last week to check out their selection. Erin carries the most beautiful fabric and yarn known to women. I decided to go back on Saturday to help celebrate their 1 year anniversary. Erin remember me and was very sweet and helpful. I only ended up buying a few embroidery kits that day, but will be back for some fabric for my next project. Friendly staff, great selection and a cute store. What more could you ask for?
I really wonder about the one and two star reviews. Seriously, what are you guys thinking? One star = worst, shittiest, "imma burn the place down"; two stars = shitty but paper baggable/cough medicine grade digestible; three stars = average; four stars = good; five stars = outstanding. If you can't manage to give Bobbin's Nest at least a three star rating, you are either a competitor, a cold-hearted witch or a robot.
Thanks to Bobbins. I picked up a couple of new hobbies. It's so close that I can just hop on a bike or stroll over from the Farmer's Market for something I need. Be it sewing supplies, fabrics, yarn or needles. Sometimes they run out of certain sewing supplies but it's not a store on the same scale as JoAnn's, so I don't expect it to have everything. Besides, every time I go, there's always something new to oh and ah about. That's exciting and awesome enough for me to rate it five stars.
I've been to just about every yarn shop in the Bay Area and I have to say that this shop raises the bar for all the others. They are the "New Kid On The Block" so to speak - open for just one year. And they are the best by far! I wish I could add another star because not only is their yarn selection stellar (Art Yarns, Karabella, Handmaiden, Louet, Misty Alpace, Rowan, Mission Falls, etc!) but they have sewing fabric, buttons, books, and notions too.
The shop is warm and inviting. There are more than enough places to sit, knit, chat, and have a cup of coffee or tea (complimentary, I might add). The girls in the shop are always eager to help with a knitting, crochet, sewing or embroidery problem or help you pick out just the right yarn for an important project. The owner, Erin, was more than happy to help me (over the phone) pick out yarn in the perfect gauge and color for Sam the Ram. She then put it on hold for me so I could run in and pick it up - I had been in a hurry that day.
I do now and will continue to recommend this shop to all my knitting friends! You'd have to try REALLY hard to be disappointed with this store.
This is a great shop for sewers, or people hoping to get into sewing a few, hip and simple items. They hace great fabrics in interesting prints. And cool, simple patterns available around the store for bag, skirts, shirts and toddler clothes. I really appreciated seeing these items sewn up around the store.
As far as knitting goes, there are many other shops in the Bay Area that have a better selection of yarn, but they have a nice selection of sock yarns and great colors in some hand-painted worsted weight yarns.
This is a great store to get ideas for gifts and personal projects.
4.5
This place is very adorable! They have a nice selection in fabrics, yarns, and books. The staff was very helpful and friendly. My boyfriend bought me a pair of interesting bag handles here and I love them. The range of products is unique and fun. They offer a variety of classes, some taught by some well known knitters that have been published. I would love to give this place a 5, but I'm holding out and hoping it wouldn't be as far as a drive to get here! ;)
I love this shop! Erin and her staff are so nice! Beautiful fabrics and neat ideas
Cute little shop near Santa Clara University. I found it while browsing for Amy Butler fabrics. Their fabric selection is limited, but I liked the majority of the stuff they carried. They tend to be more on the modern side. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They offer classes in here that look interesting so I might give it a try. Prices were decent. They also had a large selection of yarns, very neatly arranged.
Of the few knitting shops I've been to, I would have to say this is my favorite. The owner, Erin, is super friendly and so are the staff. The shop is well lit, well organized, clean, and has a nice seating area for you to knit. It's a warm and cozy place, and everyone is willing to help if you have questions on techniques or what type of yarn or needles to get for your project (and yes, the Chiao Goo needles are great). There's also a sewing room, where I'd like to one day use one of the machines to make......no idea yet (although I'd love to make a bag for myself), never sewn before, but would like to one day especially after seeing all the colorful and fun fabrics they carry.
Thanks Jane L for your great recommendations - as always!
Exquisite! I dare you to go inside and not want to make something. The layout and decor are so inviting and the staff is simply wonderful. I'm not a knitter or a quilter but any kind of crafter could find tons of lovely tools and embellishments here.
I took a private sewing lesson with owner Erin ($30 an hour or $20 for a crochet lesson) and I couldn't have been more pleased. I hauled my sewing machine to the store for a refresher course in how to use it. Erin was fabulous at teaching and was super accommodating since I brought my 2.25-year-old daughter with me. There are a handful of toys and books in a little nook to keep your kiddies occupied while you browse.
The downtown Santa Clara location is great, with a slew of street parking and special timed parking spots for popping in and out. I can't recommend browsing or taking a lesson here highly enough. Now I just have to plan a sewing party...
We are in the 21st century and knitting is cool. Again.
If I could knit all my clothes, I would. I'm a fast knitter, so that wouldn't be a problem. If I didn't have a day job and have a gazillion other hobbies then that wouldn't be a problem. If I could knit all my clothes from DOMIKNITRIX, NAUGHTY NEEDLES, and STITCH 'N BITCH then that wouldn't be a problem.
Now that Autumn is here, my perpetually cold hands seek warm Merino wool, Alpaca, and anything soft or fuzzy. If I don't have needles in my hands, I'll grab a pencil, chopsticks, anything long and hard. I mean, anything long, hard, and made out of wood. No, let me try that again. Anything resembling a tool to create stitches from spun fiber. Yes, that's what I had meant.
Bobbin's Nest Studio opens at a perfect time in a perfect location. Santa Clara is my home and to have an even closer LYS (local yarn store to the newbies) means only one thing. I've got a new route going home!
At home is how I felt knitting there. It's airy, large enough, and not claustrophobic. Although, once business starts picking up, I wonder if seating will be scarce. I love my LYS(s), but there are some that are just too big and some that have way too much yarn to make you feel you're getting smothered. (wikipedia yarnaphobia)
BNS has all of your basic yarn needs, cute fabrics, and some neat extras like felting kits. Erin and staff are really down to earth and super easy going, which made me want to just knit there all day.
So..... I got a sewing machine for Christmas from my mom and decided it was time I learned how to use it. signed up for a beginners sewing class at The Bobbin's Nest over the weekend: it was great! we learned the names and parts of the sewing machine, we were walked through the threading process and then we sewed a pillow case. I spent some time walking around the store after the class and purchased a few yards of beautiful fabric and also a book to get me started on a simple project. I definitely plan on taking another class here soon-- maybe the class on zippers?
Who knows how long it would have taken me to find this place on my own if it weren't for yelp and Jane L. That girl leads me to all the good stuff!
So, I had to check this shop out after Jane's favorable review, and found myself in a neighborhood I'd never been in before. I started out at Homestead and Lawrence Expressway and drove for miles to get to this little yarn shop. It was well worth getting off my beaten path. I know I say this every time I go into a new yarn shop, but.... this is my favorite new yarn shop.
The selection is not huge, so I didn't feel overwhelmed, and it's all the stuff I want to knit with. They also carry cool fabrics that make me want to learn how to thread my sewing machine, and needlepoint patterns that will make your granny do somersaults in her grave - skull and crossbones for example.
I can't wait to sneak away from my family and head down to Bobbin's Nest Studio to buy some nice yarn, get myself a cup of their hot tea, and plop down on some of that comfy furniture and knit something up. See you there!
What a nice place. They carry lots of yarn from Rowan and Crystal Palace. They have a good selection of books as well. I was there on a Thursday afternoon and there was no one in the shop. I hope their remote location doesn't hinder anyone from finding and venturing into this nice shop. If you're looking for really high end yarns, you won't find it here (maybe in time they will). It looks like a comfortable place to spend a few hours working on a project in peace and quiet. They even offered me a cup of tea! Best wishes to this shop to be successful.

Erin took a moment to email today to thank me for writing about her shop and to remind me they do have Alpaca yarns and carry Karabella yarn (both high end yarns).
I didn't mean to imply that they didn't have yarn for all levels of knitting. Please stop by and see this lovely shop.
Thank you, Yelp, for helping me find this. Thank you so much.
For years and years I've been all down about how Santa Clara doesn't have its own fabric or yarn store - but now it does, and I'm so glad I checked it out. The selection of knitting/crocheting books were great. The choice in fabrics is a little slim, but they're all so pretty and neatly arranged, so I could care less. There's loads and loads of soft yarn, way better than yarn at Michael's which I'm used to. I couldn't find the crochet hooks, but thankfully the staff is nice and helpful. They have this thing now where they track how much you've spent and if your spendings over the times have accumulated to $200, you get a $20 gift card. That's pretty neat, since I plan on coming back here WAY more often. Thanks, Bobbin's Nest. :]
This is a cute little store with lots of beautiful yarn and fabrics. A word of warning: yarn is addictive and not an inexpensive habit and this store will get you hooked. Certainly there are worse vices in the world than knitting up scarves and hats for your children, right?
Bobbin's Nest Studio is FANTASTIC! Everyone is very helpful, patient and friendly. I absolutely love going to this shop and always leave with a smile on my face.
I discovered Bobbin's Nest during the LYS shop hop a few months back and was pleasantly surprised. I wish I lived closer because I would love to take classes here and would like to learn to sew. I found the service friendly and helpful and liked their variety of yarns. This is one of the few places that carry Hazel Knit Yarns which is one of my favorites. Hazel Knits even created a color named after the store.
I had dealt with this shop via phone a year before when I was interested in ordering a skein of Hazel Knits sock yarn in the Bobbin's Nest colorway. I had emailed asking if they had any left. I received a quick response. I called to place the order & spoke with the owner, Erin. She was great. Very personable and we had a wonderful conversation. It turns out that the put a skein on hold for me. I placed the order & it was promptly shipped to me.
I was on vacation two months ago in the Bay Area, so I specifically had Bobbin's Nest Studio on my must-see list. It did not disappoint. The shop is right by Santa Clara University and we were able to find parking right out in front. Not only is it a yarn shop, but also a fabric shop. You walk in, yarn to your left, fabric to your right. I was able to walk out of the shop with a few souvenirs from my visit.
If I lived in the area, this would definitely be one of my go-to shops. I know I will be back if visit my friends out there again.
Gorgeous! I went in to get a button to finish up on a project. The girl working said that their buttons hadn't arrived and then went into the back to offer me a button from her OWN STASH!
On top of the amazing customer service, they had a great selection of beautiful yarn and a ton of off-season yarn on sale. And I do love a sale!
Bobbin Nest is a small, quiet, cozy boutique near SCU. My first impression was that it was very clean, inviting, and personable. They offered knitting classes for beginners, but with my hectic work hours. I scheduled private lessons with Didi. My first time was the hardest because I felt like I had two left hands. I was stumbling and I couldn't hold the needles easily. Didi was very patience and taught me how to properly hold the needles to my comfort level. Much to my surprise, I'm on my way to knitting a scarf for my friends and family. If you always wanted to learn to knit then this is the place to start. They not only teach knitting, they have crochet, sewing, and much much more.
I love this store! The ladies that work here are super sweet and so helpful! This is my first real yarn store I've ever been too, and I was completely amazed. So much yarns! They have a pretty wide range of yarns, and amazing fabric! The cutest fabric you can possibly find! They also have lots of classes are affordable prices! Great store, love it!
Bobbin's Nest has so much to offer; from unique fabrics, stunning sock yarn and sewing patterns all which you can usually only get online, to reasonably priced crochet hooks, knitting needles and other notions. The frequent customer program ROCKS and they hold sales pretty often. Their bag selection is also very nice. I purchased both my Della Q and Jordan Paige bags at Bobbin's Nest. Anytime I need inspiration, I go to Bobbin's nest and leave there with something great.
I'll start this review with a disclaimer. Erin is a friend of mine and I teach some knitting classes at Bobbin's Nest. Now that I've come clean, I'll give you my review.
There are many yarn stores in the Bay Area. Living in San Mateo county and working in Santa Clara means I've got regular access to quite a few of them and frequent several regularly. I can honestly say that Bobbin's Nest is tied for my favorite LYS.
Erin carries a fantastic selection of quality yarns at very competitive prices. Her stock strength plays to solid colors. This is where I'll come time and again when I'm looking to do projects with a wide array of solid color choices (like Fair Isle). That said, she does carry a few lines of hand dyed and variegated (including Art Yarns, hands down one of my favorite yarn lines).
The store is well lit, well stocked and very inviting. Tea and water are always available and I love the toy nook for the little ones. The other half of the store is the fabrics and they are fantastic. These are not your grandma's quilting fabrics. I'm looking forward to a future pajama pants sewing class. I've used the sewing studio several times when I was working on a big sewing project I couldn't do at home and it was fantastic. All the tools you need at your finger tips and a big room to spread it all out in.
I love this place and even if I didn't teach here I'd still be a customer!
I just got a sewing machine and was super excited to get started on my first project. I went to Bobbin's Nest after reading its reviews on Yelp and was completely satisfied. The staff was really nice, patient and helpful. I am planning to sign-up for some classes this summer too!
I went to Bobbin's in search of a new set of circular needles and was totally impressed with the organization and tidiness of the store. I had a problem with the project I was working on and the staff there that day were very helpful and understanding; my project became a tangled 200-yard worsted wool mess from a unballed skein - very discouraging for a beginner like me!!
So, I got help finding new needles and some more yarn which they made into several balls, then and there. And, some helpful advice on choosing the yarn (i.e., easy to launder). Now, I won't be all tangled up as the yarn is set-up properly and ready to go!
Bobbin's location is great for me - I take the Caltrain from Santa Clara up the Peninsula... so, after my train ride back, in a couple minutes, I can get some knitting therapy!
I highly recommend Bobbins whether you are in a tangle or not! Very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff.
I have been counting down the days until Bobbin's Nest opened! I visited today within the first hour they were opened. Erin, the owner, introduced herself a few minutes after I walked into the store and was very friendly. I had commented on their blog earlier and she remembered me just from my name alone! I asked for suggestions on yarn for baby hats and she was very helpful and knowledgeable about all her yarn. Today was their soft opening, so things like needles were still being put up. The store is very organized, stylish and clean. Unlike some other yarn shops where they have yarn on the floor, all over the tables, etc., Bobbin's Nest is very organized.
Yarn is not the only thing they offer at this shop. The other half of the shop has yards and yards of gorgeous fabric. I'm not a sewer or a quilter, so I'm sure I can't fully appreciate it, but it all looked gorgeous! They have a pretty good assortment of books and very cute knit kits that can make little things from coin purses to scarves and bags (including handles!) I've never seen anything like them at any other knitting store. They also carry Jordana Paige bags (I bought my first one today! Yay!)
They have a cute little seating area, but I don't think more than 7 or so can sit there. I have to say, the only downside to this store is that only service dogs are allowed. I'm really bummed because I try to bring my dog everywhere with me. I know Erin is also unhappy with this because she has her own dog she'd love to bring into the shop, but her landlord's rules are no dogs allowed except service dogs. Bummer.
I'll definitely be returning back to the store again and again!
**UPDATE**10/13/07 I went in to the store today with my boyfriend to pick out yarn for a hat I'm going to make him, and right after I walked in, Erin saw me and remembered me. She even saved the duster from my Jordana Paige bag I bought on their opening day! She is by far, the nicest store owner, of any establishment, I know. I also got a thank you note (hand written!) from Erin thanking me for being part of their opening day. (Erin, if you're reading this - I just got the letter when I got home today - it's very sweet of you to write, thank you!) If that's not great customer service, I don't know what is! You couldn't ask for a nicer or more helpful owner or staff and the yarn, fabric, and books they have are fantastic. Oh! And thanks to Erin's husband, they also have a stack of "man" magazines, so bring your hubby, SO, or boyfriend around, and they can read the car magazines while you shop!
Lovely store: beautiful, elegant and set up with lots of light. Erin, the owner, is wonderful and has a great staff to help her give exceptional customer service to anyone. The idea to combine yarn with fabrice is novel and will hopefully keep them in business for a long time. Excellent selection of fabrics. Great class schedule for both yarns and fabrics. And although their yarn selection is not as large as other stores in the area, you can find nice yarns at a great price point. And the bamboo needles they carry are a bargain and great to work with.
I love hanging out here.
This is the kind of shop I would open if I were to open a shop! I've gone in several times and have had nice experiences each visit. My last time there, I bought the makings for a 50's style half apron. I met Erin and Didi, both of which were super nice and helpful. Erin said I should send in photos once I finished sewing so she could add them to the Bobbin's Nest blog. You know what? She blogged my apron and I couldn't be happier. I'll be moving out of the 'hood soon, but will make frequent stops on my way home from work. I sew and embroider and dig the choices that Bobbin's Nest offers for both!
I don't knit, but I love pretty things! And this store and everything inside is just lovely and inspiring...even for the novice! The owner Erin is one classy gem. I ought to know since I'm her friend. Not that this has influenced my review in any way whatsoever.
