We had idea to try this spot last minute on a Restaurant Week Friday night, and quickly discovered this place would've been just as popular had it not been restaurant week. We managed to call ahead to be placed on the waiting list prior to our arrival.
After a half hour, we saw a spot at the bar and decided to dine there in lieu of our reservation for 2 in the dining room. We had their Zin house wine (which turns out to be a glass + a 1/3 of wine poured for you, a Moscow Mule (served in the traditional copper mugs they have), and split their Burger Royale With Cheese & added the free-range fried egg! It was a healthy 8oz house ground patty of filet and ribeye, roasted garlic, gruyere, pork belly, arugula, caramelized onion bun, green peppercorn aioli, pickled red onion, served with more than enough pommes frites! Absolutely amazing!!!
Just you know, the two BO-beau locations (La Mesa & Ocean Beach) can and will have different menus just so you know... They may have many of the same popular dishes like their famous crispy Brussel Sprouts, or a few of their flatbread selections. Just don't expect something you had at one location to automatically be on the menu at the other location.
Service at the bar was excellent, food came out hot, promptly considering the high volume of diners that night, and we were fortunate to find good parking right outside the restaurant. We like BO-beau and wish they would put a location in Chula Vista. Great place! We loved it, and if you tried it, we think you would too!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jan 25, 2015Previous reviewWe had idea to try this spot last minute on a Restaurant Week Friday night, and quickly discovered this place would've been just as popular had it not been restaurant week. Very Pretty/Intimate Restaurant. It definitely reminds me of a rustic restaurant in France. Very Romantic Date Night restaurant with a parking lot attached.
Food: was good; but not wow. I love the elegance and simplicity of the dishes, best part of the meal was the Belgian Chocolate Torte.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 3, 2019
This is more of a 3.5 star review but since yelp doesn't allow half stars, I'm rounding up.
They participate in the 'passport unlimited' card program which is always a bonus point in my book.
My partner in crime and I wanted to celebrate our birthdays since they are only a few days apart. This seemed to be the perfect spot.
They don't take reservations so we arrived soon after they opened, put our names down for a certain time and agreed to return at that time. My partner in crime used the restroom and I took advantage of the moment to tell the hostess that it was a special occasion (birthdays) and was hoping the restaurant could do something special. She agreed and noted it in the system.
We returned not too long after and were quickly seated. The establishment is small, but very cute and lends itself to a romantic dinner with it's open air concept. However, once the restaurant fills up, it is loud and tight to enter and exit. There isn't lobby so people congregate by the hostess stand and then overflows to the parking lot.
Our server was friendly, but not nearly as friendly as the other server! I think our experience would've been enhanced if the 'friendlier' server was ours! He introduced himself at every table and brought bread immediately.
Back to our table, our server did recommend several dishes and the best one he recommended was the brussel sprouts. One portion is large enough to share. My dish was mussels and while it was good, the sauce was the highlight of the dish. I couldn't stop dipping bread in it...and I was happy our server brought after I asked for it. My partner-in-crime ordered a fish dish...wait for his review as I only tried a bit of it.
My partner in crime enjoyed a few beers on happy hour.
After dinner, our server brought us the check. My mention of 'birthday celebrations' with the hostess were forgotten. We paid and tried to leave...tried.
Leaving took longer than necessary. Beau-bo's parking lot is a small, dirt lot. We were blocked in by other cars until the manager (maybe the manager) came to move cars.
Would I return? Hmm...maybe for happy hour and brussel sprouts but not sure about dinner.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 11Oh no 0 - Imara S.Murrieta, CA35179255Oct 31, 2020
So we came out to San Diego for my Birthday weekend and I found this amazing place to eat for dinner to celebrate!! We couldn't be any happier. Completely fell in love with BO-beau Kitchen & Bar.
Let me begin with the interior layout, it looks like it's came out straight from a movie. It's super cute, has that romantic cozy fun chill vibe. I loved how they went all out on their Halloween decor but without getting too crazy with it. They still kept it family friendly with a touch of spooky.
Next, the staff. We were greeted by Jeremy (who turned out being the restaurant manager, I think) who took us straight to our table. He was super friendly when I made my reservation and and even more friendly and kind in person. Our waiter was Nate we we LOVED him. He was amazing to us. Explained that nights specials, made everything sound so delicious. Was very patient and sweet with us. Made us feel @ home, almost asked him to take a seat and have a drink with us lol.
Now the FOOD!! omg everything was delicious and flavorful. Plated so beautifully. We ordered the chef's plate of the bone marrow it was amazing. The roasted Brussel sprouts r out of this world. The kids butter noodles were soft and buttery. But u have to try their flat breads! The best flat breads I've had.
Loved this place and can't wait to come back with friends. Perfect for a date night.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 30, 2019
Such a cute place. Date nights are always better with a romantic atmosphere. The dimmed lighting and wine bottle all over felt like an escape from the beach town we live in.
I used the yelp app to be added to the list which is one of my favorite features on yelp.
The deal for restaurant week was great! I left so stuffed. I ordered the salmon and cous-cous. The salmon was pan fried nicely and cous-cous was delicious with spinach mixed in it. My bf has the rib eye and it was so yummy . For dessert I have the creme brûlée cannot go wrong.
The service was great. Our waiter was very energetic and knowledgeable with the menu.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 16, 2019
I went here on a date. It was romantical; too bad I was there with my roommate. We still had an amazing time!
We found parking in the small lot next to the establishment which was packed but we didn't have an issue. Walking up to Beau Bo I noticed how small and cottage like it seemed, which I wasn't expecting because I have been to the Long Beach location which is huuuuuge. There were locks lined up on the outside wall, which is a nice nod to Paris and immediately made us think it is a great date spot. I had made a reservation on Yelp, so informed the hostess we arrived and were seated promptly as we didn't mind being "outside". I wouldn't consider it under the stars but it was a really nice space that was open air.
First we were served some cucumber water while we waited for our drinks. I really appreciated that tiny bit of flavor because tap water can be very boring and I usually ask for lemon. I ordered a cocktail with mezcal which wasn't too tart or sweet and the blackberry was yummy. I chose the fish of the day which was Halibut with broccoli and cauliflower roasted and puréed butternut squash. As usual I dug right in and forgot to take a photo first. My mouth was watering and I wanted to get in there before that poor fish got to rest too long. It was fantastic, moist and cooked very well.
My roommate had the arancini with butternut squash and bacon that she raved about and then a braised short rib flatbread pizza. She said I should mention the pizza was great the next day.
I can't wait to bring my fiancé back. Food, ambiance and service were all delish! Thank you!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sep 17, 2019
What a gem in Ocean Beach. We came here for dinner on our last night in OB and I love it. First of all, the ambience is so perfect for date night - it's dimly lit with candles on each table. If there's seating, definitely sit out on the patio - it's more like an indoor patio, so you get to enjoy the warmth and get a view of the fireplace.
They have an extensive wine menu (mostly bottles) and a unique cocktail menu. There's definitely something for everyone, from sweet cocktails to all the wines.
But let's get to the food - I am impressed BO-beau. The Brussels sprouts with the bacon was so delicious and I was a huge fan of the balsamic glaze and Parmesan on it. The escargots in the shells were buttery and well season (and thank you for not tempting me with any toasted bread). The two apps we got were so good I would've been happy to leave right then.
For entrees, I had the catch of the day - a perfectly cooked amberjack with sauces (kind of a pesto-y buttery sauce) that complemented the fish and veggies all so so well. The boyfriend had steak frites, medium rare - also cooked pretty perfectly. Our least favorite part of the meal was probably the fries, which we still packed up the leftovers to munch on later.
If you're in the area and are looking for a nice dinner date, definitely come here. I'd come back here any dayHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 25, 2019
Atmosphere is super cute. Service started off great then I'm not sure what happened. Our entrees were almost delivered to the wrong table and we had two different servers taking care of us at the end. They seemed confused and didn't know who order what.
The food:
Mushroom ravioli: generously filled, loved it
Kale salad: fresh and delicious
Pan seared salmon: super crispy skin, cooked perfectly
Bouef bourguigon: too salty, why are there no potatoes?
Flourless chocolate cake: amazing, amazing, amazing. Even the brittle was delicious
Creme Brûlée: good texture, tastes eggy, not enough vanilla
Overall the food was good but things were hit and miss including the serviceHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lily Y.North Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA093Aug 13, 2021
They pick up the phone, put you on hold to verify if they can accommodate and they just hang up at you. Heard it from couple of friends as well.
Wouldn't suggest.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jennifer O.San Diego, CA592Jun 27, 2021
We are big fans and regulars of the Cohen family restaurants. Tonight at Bo-beau in Ocean Beach, my birthday dinner was the best. It started off by a warm welcome by Luna at front desk. It continued on and Ashleigh made my birthday dinner so special. Thank you, Luna, Ashleigh and the Cohen Family for continuing the fantastic food and phenomenal service.

BO-beau Kitchen & Bar serves up some of the most interesting and delicious tasting French inspired food we've had in a very long time.
Mind you, not everything was perfect this evening, but close enough to earn a Woohoo Five Stars from moi.
We came here to celebrate three B-Days. I was the lone exception. We called ahead and they worked to accommodate us, even though they are a no reservation restaurant. Nice!
We started off with some cocktails and wine, in what they call their intimate "window" room (with a view of the gravel parking lot). LOL. Their main dinning room tends to be slightly noisier given its size and acoustics I was told. Nice again!
For appetizers, we ordered the Steak Tartare and the Brussel Sprouts Board, which is drizzled with a balsamic glaze and parmigiano reggiano shavings on top. Now doesn't that sound and look delicious (see photo)?
For our entrées, we ordered Brown Butter Seared Diver's Scallops with peas and potatoes; Chicken Fricassee with Tarragon Dumplings; Steak Frites Ribeye with Pommes Frites; and the Salmon "le bon vieux favori" with Spinach Risotto. All were excellent, not just good. The only drawback were my scallops, which needed a better rinsing. All in all though, everything tasted great.
For dessert, we shared a Melange and two burnt creams, or Creme Brûlée, all with Birthday candles. Very classy and very nice of them!
The damage came to $50 or so each, after taxes and 3% living wage adjustment, but before gratuities. Not bad all things considered and well worth the delicious meal we enjoyed.
We'll be back. Enjoy!Helpful 38Thanks 0Love this 40Oh no 0
