It's a long stretch of parking overlooking the beach that is perfect for taking a stroll at, lounging out on, or for just peace of mind.  My bf and I walk/bike here almost all the time since it's conveniently across the street but its just one of those parks that people drive to just to take their morning jog at.  On my way to work and on the weekends I have even seen yoga/exercise classes held here.

There's also a bike path just below at the beach and we try to take our beach cruisers every chance we get!

I would give this place 5 stars if it were hobo-free. But its not. That's LBC for you. Out of all the Bixby Park area, it is the safest and least crowded. You can expect a team playing soccer, hippies doing their free yoga, or Long Beach music nights put on by the city.

It can get a little seedy after the sun goes down, but its still a beautiful industrial view of one of the biggest ports in the world.

Right behind is Bixby park, this reviewer Bill W. captured it perfectly:

This ain't Malibu beach, it's Long Beach, beach!

I walked along the path here almost everyday while a resident of the LBC.  This park helped me get in shape and stay fit.  My glutes, calves and abs thank you ever so kindly!  The endless amount of joggers, runners, walkers, yogis and cyclists was really cool and motivating.  Staring out into those faux islands was my own little Hawaiian fantasy.  The murky brown water was like the distant friend you want to stay distant.  But you give them the nod every now and again.

Random but relevant:  They film so many scenes from Dexter here.  How did I ever miss that?

Its called the Bluff....long stretch view of the LBC that you wouldn't notice it to be anything else but a bike, run, green patch area but theres a legit name to it.

So it started with that high rise scaring the city with more to come, so they regulated any more high rises to be built and bought this strip of land to keep it from being commercialized. What an awesome city.

If you stroll by, there is a memorial area for lost sea soldiers I think, I posted photos. Family friend has their plaque there, how cool!

    - beautiful to stroll
    - like a mini mini mini pch drive with a view
    - residential parking (free) and walk down this area
    - picnic here, bike ride, photos

A solid park in Long Beach's fine stable of parks and outdoor facilities. Not the biggest, nor the shiniest, nor, let's face it, the most docile, but it's always got a lively mix of families, "singles activity", and skaters at the mini-skate zone, along with a pick-up soccer game or two, yoga or fire spinning classes on the south end near the big tree, or what have you. There's bikes for rent at that hotel on the bluff, so come here with out of town friends to take them on the niest bike ride they've been on in months (see my review for the Long Beach Pedestrian & Bike Path).

Though the signs all proclaim that this is a 'no-cruising zone' and presumably somewhere that needs policing in that regard, I've never actually come across anyone actually getting it on in the park. But maybe I've just been lucky.

I was yelping the other night looking for a cool spot to get my workout fix. I found this and read some good reviews & I remember coming to this place before when I go biking from my house to Belmont Shore.

It's a good park to get your workout routine done. You can go for a jog, run, or just power walk! I did a long walk today & did went up and down the stairs for 6 times back and forth! Man, it was a good sweat!!!

Don't expect too much about the beach.. it really doesn't have anything to offer. If you're looking for a good swim, this is not the place to be.

FREE PARKING on the street! No hassle of getting in and getting out. Be sure to come early though :) Early bird catches the worm!

Definitely coming back!! See me running up and down the stairs!! LOL.

I really enjoy coming here every day for my walk. My work is pretty stressful at times and the ocean helps me de-stress while the energy of the other people helps me feel less separated from the world, since I work from home.

The great thing about this beach/park is that it is virtually part of the city. You don't have to go very far to get to it and if you come at the right time you can park for free on the street, which I am usually able to do. If not there is a metered lot off of Junipero, i think it is.

Bluff Park, from what I can tell, over looks the beach and I am not sure if the beach has it's own name and designation, but the park is a grassy area above. You can see the ocean, the queen mary, terminal island, downtown long beach, belmont pier and off in the distant the ships heading into LA harbor.

If you choose to walk down the steep steps to the beach, there is a great bike trail/walking trail that runs as far as Shoreline Village and all the way down to Belmont Shores. I have walked it from Junipero to Belmont Pier at Termino Street and it is a great walk.

The down side is that being breakwater and being right near the cruiseships, queen mary etc.. you get a lot of litter washing up on the beach. I dont know what clean up volunteer programs they have in place now, but they need one. It is such a pretty area, but a washed up KFC bucket can totally ruin the ambiance!

AND INCASE ITS YOU WHO TOSSES YOUR KFC BUCKET INTO THE SEA! STOP IT OR I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN! Seriously, don't litter the beach people, there are lots of trash receptacles everywhere, there is no reason other than laziness to throw your trash in the water or on the beach! NASTY!

Anyway, there are a lot of extreme and insanity workouts going on here, people running the stairs, doing wind sprints on the sand, etc.. there is also yoga and dog walking and people making out or chilling reading a book..

so if you like to watch the ocean, but don't want to get sand on your feet, this is a great place to grab some grass or a bench and chill out.

I loved riding my bike down 2nd, through Bixby and crossing over onto Bluff Park overlooking the ocean.  On Saturdays there's a large group of people doing yoga here; wish I had joined them to get 'centered.'  Anyway, there's good people watching here and you have a lovely view of Catalina, an artifical island where they're drilling, and the Port of Long Beach.  That doesn't sound very serene, but on a sunny day, it's a pretty awesome view.  By the way, what is up with people with no composition skills putting horrible photos on Yelp? (Sorry I know that sounds snobby, but I'm looking at some photos of Bluff Park just below my review, and they suck.)

This area is great.  It's very popular with people.  You can't beat the view.  I mean, lots of open green grass.  Just bring you a blanket, setup a picnic and you're golden.  Always seems to be a nice breeze even on the hot days.  Not much I can add that the other reviewers haven't captured.  You can park on the road right along side.  Free parking by the way.  No meters.  Hard to find a spot during the busy Summer months and weekends, but really parking isn't much of a problem here.  There always seems to be an open spot.  Make sure you got your parallel parking skils down.  Not that it's hard, but that's the kind of parking you're gonna do.

Forgetting for a minute that there are many places for the drunks and bums to urinate or that the ocean here offers nothing so much as a large ripple to remind you that this is the mighty Pacific, biking the well marked, flat and uncrowded bike path is a wonderful way to spend the day, or a few hours. It's easy to get to, it's fun and it's free (they used to say that about me only I'm on the expensive side now...but I'm still fun). Anyway, there are so many things to see while peddling the path...piers to pause on, historic old buildings to cruise by and even an Olympic size swimming pool, too. There's the LB Museum of Art with a fine café (Claire's) that'll allow you to park your bike to the side while you dine on a lunch special and tall-masted ships in the marina to see on the ride.

There are fishermen fishing, runners running, Yogists stretching and volleyballers slamming each other; lifeguards tanning*, teens dating, homeless to feed, drunks drinking and children wading.

Well it's a free-for-all and when it's all said and done, you'll have fun on the bicycle run. And don't forget your helmet, water and sunblock (the sun reflecting off the languid and lifeless water can get intense).

P.S. Combining a bike ride with a beach clean-up is remarkably rewarding. You'll feel good about doing your part to keep it clean.

P.S.S. I'd have posted this in a "LB Bike Path" link if it existed but check the pics anyway...

*No one swims or surfs here so the lifeguards um, work on their pecs and tans.

I drove past here today on the drive home and the rain was so loud, I stopped and go out of my car to look at the beach on cloudy rainy day. I usually dont visit the beach during the week, but I did today. I really love this place. I even wrote a poem.

    ----------------------
    The Storms in October

The Silence is beginning to panic
It can no longer escape the sound
    The Silence has been broken,
and now it is all around..

    The Storms of October
    have arrived.

    The rain does not speak
to me as I think of you,
    It screams on my rooftop,
telling me to try to find you.

    The Storms in October
will stop traffic in the streets,
and front doors will be shut,
there will be no one left to meet.

    These Storms in October
Make thoughts of you grow stronger
    unlike ever before, and now
    The distance is getting longer

And I want to return to you,
But What I don't want to go away:
    Are the Storms in October
    Yet, they will not stay..

    My memories of love

Are like a man who is forbidden
    to return to Yugoslavia,
A place that no longer exists

Even if he returns to Sarajevo,
it will never be the same

    The visions in his eyes
    will never be greater
than the visions in his heart.

This place is pretty sweet.  I don't mind the bums, they like my doggy so they are a ok in my book.  Oh, and this guy one time was munching on some trader joe's chips, and he wanted Cooper to do a trick for food! hehe it was cute, cause by dog is usually scared of homeless people.
Anyway, I like working on my book here, I can sit for hours and no one bothers me.  Except this one guy with crazy gray long hair, and he wears a suit. He sat down next to me and proceeded to preach about UFOs, the government putting bugs in your brain, and how much he hates George W.  He didn't even expect any replies on my end, just someone to listen to his manic (drug induced?) ranting.  So I did, and it was very entertaining!  I saw that guy walking down LB Blvd the other day...

    Quick & Dirty:

I run here almost religiously.  I love the view and can never get enough.  Safe place to go hang out.

    Long & Grassy:

The whole bluff park is nothing but grass which I like to run on.  Watch out for dog poop as a lot of people walk their dogs here and SOME don't pick up the crap.  The grass could use a little attention in areas but I love this place just the same.  There is something special about bluff park.

Oh Bluff Park, where do I begin to sing your praises???

During my brief sabbatical from the corporate cube you have brought me much comfort.  Although some might complain that you are a little rough around the edges to be a real park. I don't care, to me you are perfect just the way you are.

In the morning, you welcome dog-walkers, moms with strollers, and active seniors to stroll along your paved path along the bluff. In the evening, more dog walkers return. Active runners and walkers work their tushies off to achieve better physical fitness (myself included).

Your views of the ocean and the breeze it provides, inspire me while I walk. I'm often motivated to push myself to go a little farther on each walk, and if I get tired and need to rest...there are plenty of benches where I can park and recharge.

You might be a little ghetto, but this is the LBC and you fit in perfectly.

    Your loyal fan,

The Boy and I took some fried chicken to the park today for a nice little picnic.  Despite driving by it all the time, this is only our second time at Bluff Park.  On one side is the Pacific Ocean, on the other side is a line of gorgeous homes so whichever way you face, you get a great view.

Why don't we go here more often?!

After about an hour, we packed up the food, threw it all in the car and took a walk down on the sand.  I was surprised there weren't more people out. Oh, wait...they're all on the pier for the Pirate Festival!!

There is a bluff along much of the beach in Long Beach, and on one stretch, there is the narrow Bluff Park from which the neighborhood gets its name. Bluff Park is a small, upscale neighborhood in Long Beach, California. Bluff Park is the location of the Long Beach Museum of Art, as well as many older, well-maintained homes. There is also a Buddhist monastery that once was a Roman Catholic convent.

It is frequented by joggers, strollers, and dog walkers. Hobbyists with radio-controlled gliders and kites like to use the natural updrafts of the bluff for their toys. There is a replica of the Lone Sailor Statue in the park in honor of Long Beach's Naval heritage.

Great place to enjoy the views and reflect.

I was lucky enough to move only two blocks away from Bluff Park last year. Now living in close proximity to the park allows me to take full advantage of all that it has to offer.

Here are some of the interesting / cool features of Bluff Park...

    - There are two pedestrian / bike paths available for use.  One of the paths trail along the top of the bluff and then there's the path down on the beach. It's perfect for walks / jogs / bike rides pretty much anytime during the day.

    - The "park" part of Bluff Park features an extensive grassy area. Perfect for bringing the dogs or maybe getting a game of Frisbee in (although be careful since It's right along side of Ocean Blvd.)

    - No need to buy a StairMaster when there are several stepped walkways down to and from the beach. I have witnessed many people use the steps for exercise purposes.  A few times up and down the stairs will get your heart pumpin' pretty fast.

    - There is a group of feral cats who call part of the bluff home. They are usually pretty skiddish of people, although I have seen people leave food for them.

    - Someone(s) writes "God Loves You" in the sand on a daily basis.

*WARNING* : I strongly suggest that people be extra careful crossing Ocean Blvd. in the morning, especially when the sun is just rising. Many people have been hit and killed by red light runners who are blinded by the rising sun in the east. I personally was almost hit crossing Ocean @ Paloma about a week ago. Man in a truck ran the red light and if I would have left the curb a second earlier, I would have been hit. So please be careful in the morning when crossing Ocean Blvd.

I suspect that I am going to consistently give parks a higher rating than Amy. Which isn't to say she isn't completely right for pointing out areas where these parks need imporvement.

Bluff Park is probably one of the best places in Long Beach to run, and to gaze at the ocean. The offshore oil islands are jarring at first, but after a while become a familiar, almost comforting part of the scenery. And the view of the beach is much nicer when you don't see all the trash and litter!

I'm going to focus this review on parts of bluff that have undergone native habitat restorations to re-create coastal sage-crub and coastal bluff communities. The restored areas are best appreciated from the bluff park side (not the beach) because the habitats are most intact on the tops of the bluff.

Bewteen Bixby Park and Belmont Pier, parts of the bluff have been replanted with native shrubs, like bush sunflower, california buckwheat, and coastal prickly pear. Wildflowers, like poppies and coastal bindweed, can also be found. These flowers attract wildlife, such as hummingbirds and butterflies. Prior to the restorations, the bluffs were almost entirely covered with exotic iceplant--pretty, but without any natural value.

The Bluffs lose a star because of the stray cat problem. There are hundreds of feral cats here, which contribute to the bad smells in the park, and decimate native wildlife, like lizards, snakes, and birds.  People with good intentions feed these cats, but they are making the problem worse.

Please DO NOT FEED THE CATS! You are just multiplying their misery!

I've uploaded some pics that put the bluffs in a nice light.

This really is "woohoo! As good as it gets!" because, for me, Bluff Park is essentially my front yard. Now, before you judge me as being a braggart - please understand that I have long since paid my dwelling dues...I deserve to live across the street :)

Visiting BP is a daily occurrence for moi - since I am on the afternoon shift for walking our dog, Riley. She's a little black and white Boston Terrier. We are generally walking between 4 and 5. Say hi if you see us!
And, please excuse Riley if she doesn't get out of your way. For some strange doggie reason, she insists on making a beeline towards oncoming (walking) traffic?

Someone earlier warned about riding your bike on the park path and that it was lame if you get a ticket. I've seen many people break this rule and not get a ticket. Personally, it peeves me to no end when someone DOES break this rule. I would love to walk my doggers on the beach path - but I can't - because that's the RULE.

The park itself is clean and there's all kinds of peeps doing all kinds of things - relaxing on blankets, getting their workout on via the stairs (wow, I wish I had that motivation), joggers, other dog walkers, lovebirds, BBQ'ers and yes, the occasional bum eating a whole chicken out of a bag? I think the funniest dude I saw was wearing a long, red-plaid, flannel robe. He walked into the park from the south, proceeded past me and Riles and then picked up a paper bag - and headed back. WHAT WAS IN THAT BAG? Treasure, perhaps?

So, for those of you who haven't spent some time here, I recommend it. Bring a Frisbee and watch the sun set over the downtown skyline.

P.S. I always pick up the poo.

I love living by this park; although, I prefer walking down the stairs to the bike path more. This park is great because it overlooks the beach and it is a nice long stretch to walk along if you don't want to mess with sand or bikes. Dogs and exercise classes are popular here. Take extra precaution at night and on the stairs as homeless people like to hang around. Like the bike path, crowded in nice weather. Plenty of street parking. Visitors like coming here. Have brunch at Claire's down the far end of this park.

The night my family returned to Long Beach after many years away, we drove east on Ocean and I gasped at the beauty of the islands sparking in the night. I really thought those oil islands were habited by people, and I wanted to go visit. Of course I was immediately informed that they were facades that hid the ugly mechanics of oil drilling, but they still were beautiful to me.

This is a great place to fly a kite or have a picnic. No, it's not as fabulously beautiful as Dana Point, but it's a lot closer. And it's a great vantage point for 4th of July fireworks. It's also special to me because I learned to drive in the parking lot.

The city website describes this park as "one of the most beautiful parks in Long Beach," which is debatable.  While it's hard to argue with a park that runs along a beach, it's not the greatest section of the beach.  Your view is cluttered with oil islands and a bunch of industrial stuff off to the west (as well as the Queen Mary, which isn't really clutter).  So it isn't the nicest beach for staring out to sea (the park is, as named, on a bluff, but there are staircases you can go down to get to the beach, and there's a bike path down there too) due to it, but sure, it seems like a pleasant place to jog/run/walk your dog.  Also, the park's not the best place to concentrate, seeing as it's on a major street, so don't bring your homework or plan on meditating.

I've gone here a couple times to see the 4th of July Queen Mary fireworks, and it's not a bad spot at all.  Get there really early and have a picnic if you want to sit on the grass, otherwise, you can get there at 8:55 and go on down to the beach.  Lots of people bring their own fireworks, which is kind of annoying, but what can you do.  A lot of small boats stop offshore here to watch the fireworks, too, and down the beach to the west there's an additional show you can see from Bluff Park.

Beautiful place to get a workout! The beach is really clean and there isn't tons of people all over. It's nice to see the locals running/walking, playing with their dogs, or out with their families. They've got a pedestrian walk along the entire length of the beach, and people rollerblade/bike or jog along the path. I love to come here to run. Don't ignore the signs and do avoid riding your bike on that narrow pathway and in the grassy strip atop the bluffs on all of that south side of Ocean Boulevard.  You will get a lame ticket.  The bike path down on the sand however is awesome.

Down on the beach part, doing beach stuff, riding bikes or rollerblading embarrassingly to firm the butt and hammies, seeing everyone enjoying their activities, finding money in and watching the homeless or crazy cats in the bluffs, playing handball, getting yelled at by the turbo cyclists, braving the space with those sedan style pedal car mobiles, smelling the urine, barfing in the mouth at the sight of unnecessarily shirtless joggers, max'n and relax'n are all alright with me... in the daytime.  Nighttime is yikes and even as the nice part of LB, I say no thank you.

    Some nostalgia:
I haven't cared or been around lately, but back a few years ago you could be on the sand for the 4th fireworks.  Those were sketchy times for being barefoot in the sand.  Also, I always wanted to see the dumb reckless boat peeps speeding back to their estates to crash into each other on the way.  Never happened.
When I was a tiny tot, my mom used to pick the red seeds fallen from that big tree next to the Art Museum.  She made bean bags with them.  I wonder if they're still there?

This is the place to go when you're having one of those "FML" days...pop on your ipod and bust a Forrest Gump for as long as you can (5 min. in my case).  Ladies, you will learn to LOVE the stairs here (no pain..no gain), for sure your man will definitely appreciate them or if you don't have a man...you WILL after you spend an hour here twice a week climbing the stairs. Your butt will happy, your man will be happy, more importantly YOU will be happy...what more can you ask for?

Parking is ample on the streets and there is a lot as well (but I think it's metered). Be careful on the stairs because they're kind of rundown. The past few times I've been here around 6pm its been busy..so if you're on the running trail on the bottom be prepared to slow down or speed up to avoid running into someone.

Sooo, one day I'm driving down the street accompanied by my gal pal and we're trying to decide where to park to twist up when lo and behold, Bluff Park... awesome. Now, I've been here many times before but at this particular moment, I appreciated the view even more - being able to relax and chill with no worries was the best feeling. Some days more than others I can take it all in and be thankful for my surroundings....this was one of them. We had fun, we were pretty "mellow" when all was said and done, and it was a sight to see as the horizon is so beautiful and you can watch the sun set and the skies change color....sigh.... groovy baby...

Bluff Park is essentially just a narrow strip of grass running along Ocean Blvd and along the beach, for the length of the bluffs, which is from approximately 36th Pl (near Belmont Pier) to Cherry Ave (across from Bixby Park).

It's a good place for a walk along the ocean, without actually having to walk down to the beach. Sometimes I'll pick up a sandwich at Olives and walk down here to to eat it while sitting on one of the benches facing the ocean. You can walk your dogs here, unlike down on the bike path (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) where dogs are not allowed. It's also a good spot to catch the 4th of July fireworks and other such events. The view can be gorgeous on a nice day or just as the sun is setting.

It's not exactly peaceful, like Amy said, since it's right next to all the busy traffic of Ocean Blvd. It's not really a good place for recreation, since the grassy area is so narrow, there's really not enough room, nor do I think it would be very safe due to the proximity of the street. It's probably not the greatest place for a get-together unless you can walk, since there is no parking other than what you can find on the street.

I made an interesting discovery the other day, since I had read that the LB Municipal band was playing at Bluff Park. I walked along what I thought was the duration of the park, up until the LB Museum of Art, and I didn't see anything, so I figured maybe it had been canceled. Then I finally found the concert, on the west side of the museum; I never would have known that the park extended this far, I thought that part was part of Bixby Park. It was a pretty stark contrast to seeing the band play at Marina Vista Park, as there was a strong police presence and not nearly so many people. Guess the folks in my neighborhood can't be trusted. This part of the park does not seem as well kept up as the part east of the museum. There is no railing separating the park from the bluff, and it's a lot dirtier.

So anyway, while I was at the park, I saw this old cannon and wondered what the heck it was doing there. I found an inscription that said it was a gift from the city of Valparaiso to the city of Long Beach in 1976 and that it been used in defense of the port of Valparaiso in 1847. Then I saw a sign indicating that this part of the park was called Plaza Valparaiso. Well, this is all very interesting, but I needed more information. Where is Valparaiso and why would this city give a historical cannon to the city of Long Beach? I looked online and found that Valparaiso, Chile is one of Long Beach's sister cities (http://www.sistercitie...). I could not find any mention of this, however, on the park web page, or on the city web site, let alone at the park. I think it's great to dedicate part of this park to our sister city, but it's a shame without any more educational information available at the park itself as well as elsewhere so that Long Beach citizens can learn more about it.

Another interesting feature is a Navy memorial statue, identical to the one that can be found at the Navy memorial in Washington, DC.

Not deserving of five stars - unless- you consider it is in the midst of a city.  A park with an ocean view nice.   Access to ocean by bike is limited.  However foot traffic access is great.

i dont really consider this a park, but mainly a grassy rest area for runners, picnics, & cute dogs. It is relaxing, and cute to watch the ederly walk hand in hand, while watching the sunset.

Bluff Park is my favorite park in Long Beach.  I go there twice a day, walking my dog.  A great place to chill out, watch the water, check out the Queen Mary, the sunset over the port; this park is LBC at its finest.  For those saying this is a "sketchy" park, whatever that is supposed to mean, it couldn't be further from the truth.  I like the fact that I can sit on a bench, stare at the ocean and Laguna Beach yuppies aren't all around me.  Great place for a picnic, a well hidden beer, or just a place to sit and be thankful you live in Long Beach.  Oh yeah, I have ridden my bike on the path dozens of times and have yet to get or see anyone get a ticket.

oh, long beach.  industry mixed with ocean.  pretty puppies, green grass, and beautiful homes mixed with feral cats and homeless people.  i love it.

posting up on a bench after work with a book is the best.  i like to run here too, though the concrete path on the sand below feels more level.
