A few months ago I had eaten lunch at Bluegrass, on a rainy Sunday. We had a great meal, great table by the fireplace and from what we remembered, the service was fine.

Recently, we were taking a friend there for dinner so I went to Yelp to look at the reviews and was surprised to see some of the comments, especially about the service and some of the food items. I became skeptical about keeping the reservation, but was glad I did.

Taeler, our server, was great. She was very attentive. I think, the manager and other staff members have been reading their reviews on Yelp and worked to improve their service. We noticed that the other servers seemed attentive to their tables as well. Everyone was friendly and accommodating.

My husband, our 3.5 year old daughter and my friend ordered the ribs. They all thought the ribs were great, but for our daughter, she said the ribs were "spicy". I think for her young taste buds they were a bit spicy.  I had the Fried Chicken, creamed corn and mashed potatoes. The chicken and the corn were fabulous, but the mashed potatoes seemed that they had been reheated or sitting out too long. They had a nice flavor, but a bit dry. Overall we had a great meal and will definitely go back again.

I've seen this place a few times on my way to Yeti next door. I've been wanting to stop here but once you get Boyfriend next to any kind of Indian or Napalese food there's no turning back. But finally, my months of begging and pleading paid off and we went to Bluegrass last night.

As one Yelper mentioned below the service doesn't seem to be up to par with the pricing. The food is definitely priced like fine dining but  the service is just below. Good, but not fine dining. Which I wasn't expecting from this place... but I also wasn't expecting a $70 dinner for two.

However, you can always win me over with bread and they started out right by bringing two warm corn bread muffins with butter. Delicious! Boyfriend ordered a beer and the keg ran out when they were pouring it, so they gave him the half glass on the house and asked what his second choice was. I thought that was nice.

I had the ahi tuna sandwich and traded out the sweet potato fries for regular. My meal was good but nothing special. Boyfriend had the fish taco and chili rellano plate. That was actually really really good. For dessert we had the creme brulee which was soooooooo good. And HUGE!

* A note about the fries: If you, like myself, DO NOT like In N' Out fries, you won't like these fries. Go for the sweet potato fries instead.

I would definitely go back here again. The outside seating area looked really nice (it was too cold last night) so hopefully we'll get to sit out there next time.

I had much higher hopes for the Bluegrass Grill!  I'm willing to concede that we could have simply been there on a bad night, but it's hard to imagine that none of the following problems are recurring:

- abundance of flies and bees both inside the restaurant and on the outdoor patio
- slow, forgetful wait-staff who seemed to primarily be teenagers
- generally below-par food in comparatively small portions

The location makes me want to love this place, and usually with a party of 6 someone will get a great dish regardless of where you go, but no one in my group did.  The cornbread muffins are great but literally everything else was unimpressive.  I respect that they're hiring young people but they need to improve their service skills . . . when someone is literally arguing with my grandmother as she attempts to order, you've lost me as a repeat customer right there.  Booooo.

Food seemed pricy for BBQ, A 2 for $22 was no bargain
as it seemed more like one meal split in half and put on two plates.
Sausages extremely hot!

I wouldn't go back.

Meh...the food was really good but the service...yeah, not so much.  Our waitress was super forgetful, even though it was the middle of the afternoon and not a busy time at all.  It was just really annoying and kind of spoiled it for me.

That said, the pulled pork nachos were delicious.

Really nice place. Unusual huge, old working water wheel adds great decor. Food was so good. We had a ribs dish, brisket dish and caesar. The brisket was my favorite. It was so tender and tasty. It came with very delicious mashed potatoes and wonderful greens. The ribs came with good potato salad and good cole slaw. The caesar wasn't good, but delicious cornbread is served with jalopenos instead of regular bread. Service was good and the outdoor setting is fantastik. All in all, it was such a good experience. The prices are very decent.

This place is SO good.  We come here every month on our trip up to visit our favorite wineries.  They have the BEST cornbread and sliders.  Their pulled pork nachos and blue cheese fries are also fantastic.

The food also gets to you pretty quickly, as does your check at the end of the meal.

The wait staff doesn't seem to be up to par for what you're paying, but that said, you're not paying a whole heck of a lot and they are certainly pleasant enough. This is the only reason that I've deducted a star.

We've been here a dozen times and I'm sure we'll go back dozens more times.

location? perfect! high hopes for a good meal of the american variety...bad news? staff is young and ...ignorant...the worst was a young man who was some sort of supervisor...pig ignorant and woefully disengaged...ok so staff aside...there we are in a beautiful setting on a patio gurrgling brook in the background ..food is okish...the usual white guy goers to BBQ town...sort of tony roma inspired...the catch here is the beverages...very very expensive which could catch you off guard...it did me! would not reccomend or repeat but I can see why some people may think otherwise...

we just had dinner. the food was good. the fire fries were great!!!

the service was just ok. it took a long time to get water and be acknowledged for drinks. but once all that was addressed everything was good.

we had the brisket and the meat combo plate. the mashed potatoes with my brisket did appear as tho they sat under the light for a while but the flavor was great!!!!

over all an ok joint

Bluegrass is good for a casual meal. I like the setting the most. I've been here probably 5 times and have been happy every time. I don't care for their martini's too much but their "Wedge Salad" is very good. I also enjoy their pulled pork nachos which are HUGE and their ahi tuna sandwich. Their specials are usually pretty good too. The main thing I don't like from bluegrass is their steaks...which is kind of sad but I still like it here. I think it's a fun restaurant and would be good for large groups. Definitely think you should try it.

This is the coolest, hippest place in Glen Ellen and surrounding areas. You walk up and over a little bridge hovering a babbling brook to the sound of the mill wheel turning and water trickle.  The bar is open and inviting inside and a great outdoor patio if the weather is warm.  We brought our own wine for a meager $8 cork fee.  The mac and cheese is too die for!!  Good customer service and GREAT cornbread muffins to get you started rather than your typical hard bread.  I can't wait to come here again.  Its a hidden great spot in Glen Ellen near the market.

5 stars for atmosphere, 1 for the food.
This place is cool - you walk in, there's the old Mill water wheel, there's old wooden floors, long bar, 2 floors, a bridge complete with creek - it has all the makings of something great. And that's all it has.

We started off with Bloody Mary's. There was nothing redeeming about my Mary. She was salty, bland and downright horrid. Mary, please - go put on something decent. This was tomato juice with pepper. Perhaps the pepper because I asked for extra spicy. I took 2 sips and could go no further. That's bad.

I ordered the cobb salad, because honestly - how can you fuck that up? Well, come here and you will forever know. Eggs cooked too long, dry tasteless chicken, romaine tossed in heavy dressing. Oh man. I didn't finish that either.

Hot links = greasy. These had nice flavor, but left you with salty grease in your mouth. The potato salad that accompanies is almost tasteless. It boasts bacon on the menu, but funny - we could find a bit anywhere.

The one good plate was the hangar steak, cooked just right with simple spinach salad and grilled corn on the cobb. Nice.

I love this old building, I wanted to love everything - but shit, they struck OUT.

I was in the mood for ribs so we came over from Petaluma. We have been here a few times before and always had a good meal. Tonight was no different. I ordered a whole rack of ribs, fries, slaw. Wife, pork sliders, slaw, potato salad. Every thing was real good. The only complaint is they took the baked beans off the menu.

OK, maybe I'm being picky, but things were off to a bad start before we even ordered the food.

Drinks: 1 star

Mojitos are my favorite cocktail, but I know that not all bartenders/bars/restaurants are equipped to make them - they're a pretty high maintenance cocktail. So, when they're not on the menu (but it seems like a mojito kind of establishment) I always ask the server "do you make mojitos?" I don't just go around blindly ordering mojitios any place that has a bar...

That being said, my husband and I had lunch at Bluegrass on Sunday. They had a pretty extensive cocktail menu (including cocktails involving mint), so I asked the waitress if they made mojitios, she said yes, I ordered one... (side note: I'm nursing right now, so when I get a cocktail it's a pretty BFD) what I got was simple syrup and rum on the rocks garnished with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint. It wasn't even kind of a mojito... and was just gross. After a few sips, I just set it aside and ordered something else (off of the menu). The waitress didn't ask me if there was anything wrong with my drink, etc.. but she was perfectly nice/competent otherwise.

The Food: 2 1/2 stars*

My meal: The brisket was dry and tough, my side of corn was half a cob, which would have been fine if it was the big end, but it was the pointy half, and only about half of that half was eatable.
My husband's meal: The ribs were good, the fries were outstanding, and he got the big half of the cob.
I hate it when restaurants cheap out... go ahead and splurge on the extra 10 cents worth of corn for your customers, Bluegrass.

The setting: 5 stars

Bluegrass has fantastic outdoor/patio seating. I would be willing to go back for the patio seating alone (and to try the sliders).

*Note about the food: Looking around at the food on the others tables, it seems I just so happened to order the least successful dish on the menu. I will give Bluegrass a second try in the future.

I ordered the blackened fish taco and chili relleno and i have to say, for the price (15) i've definitely had better. There was nothing special about it and the portions were pretty small.

Most importantly, the service was seriously lacking. I went there with a pretty big party, so I can understand that there would be a delay in the food, but there were times when i could see the waitresses just standing around not doing anything.  The OMG burger was NOT OMG good and the creole sauce didnt taste creole at all...
Our drinks were always empty, it took forever for the waitress to come around, and we werent offered bread like the other customers in the restaurant were.
It took over an hour for our table to be served and because of the fact that  our part consisted of 6 persons, gratuity was added onto our bill regardless of how the service actually was.
I would most likely NOT go back there

Brand new launch Feb 2008.   Located in the Jack London shopping barn, In the building with the big water wheel.

This is a meat lover's paradise.  Dry rub BBQ.  Traditional sides of corn on the cob, cole slaw, beans, spicy cornbread, etc...

Fair prices for such high quality and generous portions.   BBQ ribs for 2 with lots'a side dishes for just $24!!!

Full liquor bar.  Whiskey tastings (that's a refreshing switch-up from the typical wine country scene?)

See their web pages:  http://www.bluegrassba.../

Yummy Alert!   Go!

Singing the Blues.

TGIF meets Green Acres.  Reality check time.  I am glad this place is busy, but there are definitely kinks to be worked out.  Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine around $60.  Go back?  Maybe, since it's so inexpensive, and not much else in Glen Ellen (and I can't go to The Fig Cafe every time I am up in Sonoma).

Place.  A seemingly jinxed location -- several restaurants in past several years -- in that forlorn spot called Jack London Village off Arnold Drive.  Set in the old mill, this place should reek with nostalgic charm, but alas, it comes off like a bad rec room.  The lighting is too bright; the acoustics too loud; the tables placed like an institutional cafeteria.   And what's with the water wheel that you can see beyond the bar spinning faster than a carnival knife-thrower's target?  Dizzying and not in a good way.

Food.  Both the steak and brisket were good but nothing to yelp about; the fries were OK like McD's; the greens a bit overcooked and lackluster.  It just all tasted and presented like home-cooking by Martha's less talented sister.

Wine.  Well, we tried to order... but each time the waitress had to go check and come back to say they were out.  Why didn't she just tell us what was out, or why did the restaurant not just print a new wine list?  And the "best seller" (according to the owner) is a horrid jammy zin which the waitress relunctantly brought us a taste.  Luckily, we landed with on a Malbec for just $20.  Yes, we are in Sonoma, but when nothing decent is left to order, one goes for the cheap and foreign.

Service.  Nice and earnest but ultimately not really there.  The lack of attention to the small things is all too evident -- from the non-existent wines, to the wobbly table ("oh, but those floors are old!"), to the haphazard bus service.

After a long working Saturday my fiance and I somehow ended up at Bluegrass Bar and Grill in Glen Ellen.  It was very warm out so we sat on the deck overlooking the creek.  It was a very nice setting.

We ordered the Pork Nachos that seemed sort of expensive ($12) until they were served.  It was an enormous portion -- and delicious!  They were accompanied by a Bluegrass Margarita (with blood orange juice) for my fiance and a Ginger Lemon Drop for me.  Mmmm, mmm good!

We will be back for more.

Finally! A place that is casual (and NOT Italian or "foo-foo") where us locals can hang. FULL BAR, great food, generous portions, FULL BAR, and a very cool and friendly staff. (Ivan, the bartender, is awesome!)

If I've failed to mention it - they also have a FULL BAR! The ambiance is nice (blues tunes, wood, glass, deck overlooking the creek, view of the water wheel from behind the FULL BAR...). Top pics for food are rotisserie chicken, pulled pork nachos, and the sliders. Delish!

They get packed during the dinner rush, so make reservations ahead of time - especially on the weekend. Enjoy!

Mixed review.  Almost empty on a Wednesday July night.  Grilled artichoke appetizer had me thinking this would be someplace special -- really good.  But my hangar steak was skimpy, the grilled corn with it was tasteless,as were the corn muffins served for the table.  My daughter's kid-size ribs were yummy and the hand-cut fries were good, and luckily, considering it cost $10 (very high for a kid's meal).  Sliders -- cheesburger and pulled pork -- were mediocre.  Pleasant service.  I wouldn't waste a wine-country meal here unless I were staying for a month.

This place looked good from the outside.  You know with the name like Bluegrass, waterfall in the back & the wine country?  But much to its disguise, it was kind of a disappointment.  We were some hungry wine tasters looking for some real meal.  We started off with some fries for appetizers.  It was soaked in so much grease!  The hot links weren't even hot! The sides were good though.  The mashies had corn in it & had a kick to it, very original.  Not only did our main course took 40 minutes to arrive, even our dessert (peach crisp) took forever too.

This place is a gem that has come into its own. The quality is through the roof wrt to ingredients used across the board. I come here at least once a month and the food and cocktails are up to par with the space, which as everyone agrees is outstanding. Like EDK on the Sonoma square, Bluegrass takes a break from the typical wine country fare. Highlights: if you are a cocktail person you will not be disappointed. The house Manhattan is made with Sazerac and is a must. The burger is tops, hard to beat.

This place is kinda hidden.  If you know where the Jack London Village in Glen Ellen is then that is where the restaurant is.  Great service.  Food was good.  Since we were wine tasting all day, I skipped out on ordering a drink.  But it seemed they had a wide range of cocktails.  We started off with the pull pork nachos.  It was excellent.  If I were to order it again, I would request to have the chips on the side (with the tomatoes, cheese, pull pork, etc. it made the chips on the bottom soggy) and no beans and jalapeño peppers.  I'm not a bean fan or a jalapeño pepper fan.  Sweet jalapeno maybe...but not spicy jalapenos.  the nachos were still very excellent.  For my entrée, I had the special of the day, which was the short rib.  The short ribs were cooked very tender.  It melts in your mouth.  Seasoning was perfect.  They didn't over accentuate it with barbeque sauce.  I had the corn and the grilled veggies for the side.  Corn was excellent.  It was nicely grilled.  Could live without the lime butter.  But it was good.  as for the grilled veggies, it was grilled asparagus.  I thought it would be grilled zucchini or grilled squash, it was grilled asparagus (again, not an asparagus fan.)  for dessert we had the peach cobbler like thing with ice cream.  that was okay.  i like the oatmeal topping.  All in all, it was a nice barbeque restaurant.  Those are hard to find.

I have followed the history of the restaurant location for many years. Its a wonderful setting but sad to say the restaurants don't last very long at this location. I think one of the problems is that this is an off-beat location and does not get enough tourist travel to keep it going. Hopefully the Bluegrass will last. The scenery is really nice with the waterwheel which I wish they would keep going all day and evening and light it up again. Its the highlight of that area right next to the creek. Now to the food. I really don't like barbecue unless I am making it with olive oil and my own spices and not that sloppy, sugary, tomato goop that they serve down south. Four of us went there and had the ribs, the brisket, the onion rings. All were good-- very good-- if you like that type of food. The portions are large, the baked beans might have been Bush's (which are good), everything was okay. The 32 ounce $12 bottle of beer was shared by two. The deserts, well I had a diabetic shock just looking at them. Not for me, too gooey, too stickey, they look like something I mix up for the dog when she gets a treat. The service was good,. But the highlight of the meal was our waiter. He didn't have a name tag but if you are reading this, you belong in Hollywood. Six foot tall, a real sweetheart, with a smile that never stopped. I watched him outside waiting on tables and the brightness from that smile just clouded my vision. Too bad he was not on the menu "to go". If you ever get couch-casted in Hollywood, waiter dearest -- you have a brilliant career ahead. I hope that the Bluegrass does well and continues on. We will go back but this time maybe get a slider (they looked good). The bar area is nice, the dining room is nice, for those who want to eat outside the patio is v ery comfortable and scenic and you can waft in the smells of the Yeti restaurant nearby with its pungent curry b.o. odor. Good luck folks!

They advertise "Best BBQ in Sonoma"...LIARS!!!! We began with the onion rings - a more insipid rendtion I can scarce remember. The batter crust was indistinguishable in regard to flavor and the onion were so lacking in onion flavor, they may well just have been tofu. I order the brisket with great anticipation but received  an unremarkable slices of meat could hardly be considered barbequed - I suspect oven cooked. My companion ordered the sliders and the meat was cooked to the point of being wrung of any moisture/juiciness. On top of it all, the food was luke-warm. Finally, the outdoor deck abounded in wasps with no apparent sign of any devices to minimize this obnoxious insect...so we moved indoors and were besieged by flies!! Again with no sign of any devices and worse, they'd leave the door open to augment the number!! The sooner this places closes down, the happier all BBQ lovers will be.
