i must admit, i rarely eat muffins. usually i find them to be too sweet, too cake-like in texture, and not worth the insane number of calories. so, if i *am* eating a muffin, i (and you) know it's because it's an exceptional one. thus far, i have found only two bakeries that are worthy of such an accolade: the Black Dog in Martha's Vineyard (just because it's popular/cliche doesn't mean they don't have the best corn muffin EVER), and Blue Sky right here in my beloved Park Slope.
i went yesterday with my bf because he was considering the muffins at Gorilla and i insisted that we make the extra stop to satisfy his craving. (needless to say, i had no choice but to make a selection of my own, as well, even though we'd just had a big brunch.) he opted for the blackberry-mango-bran, which was really good, and i chose the strawberry-sweet plum, which was uh-may-zing. as previous reviewers have said, the outside of the muffins have this perfect crispiness to them, while the inside is nice 'n' moist -- without being too much like a cupcake -- and i never cease to be delighted by the piping hot, fruit-filled center that i discover like a jewel in the middle of the muffin. whereas other fruit muffins will have bits of fruit scattered throughout, this has bits of (better) fruit but also a sizable center of *just* fruit, and it's wonderful. the muffin itself is also not too sweet, which i greatly appreciate, and i couldn't help eating the entire thing before i'd even gotten back to my apartment just several blocks away, because it was so warm and delicious that i couldn't wait to eat it.
yes, this is a muffin that leaves all other muffins in the dust. you can't go wrong, no matter which one you choose, so just go, eat, and enjoy.
I just had their other muffins - blueberry mango and pumpkin banana walnut and they were also amazing! I preferred the pumpkin banana walnut over the blueberry mango. Blueberry mango was not as moist as the other muffin. Can't wait to go back again and try more.
So far, my favs and MUST haves are:
1) blueberry carrot cream cheese
2) pumpkin banana walnut

Wow OMG their muffins are so good! I went there late, before they closed but the muffins were still… Read more »
Best muffins in NYC. PERIOD.
AND, their coffee is delicious.
Can't go wrong with the muffin options, but my faves tend to be the ones with the cream cheese baked in the middle, or any of the mixed berry concoctions.
Lovely lovely bakery! I go here some Sunday mornings to grab a muffin, coffee, and read the paper. I've tried different muffins on my visits, and I really enjoyed the berry bran muffins. Eating a bran muffin helps convince myself that it's health. More importantly, they are crusty on the outside and melt-in-your mouth on the inside (this is assuming you get them when they are fresh and warm out of the oven). They also have a sweet coffee/muffin special. (You save like a dollar or something when you order both--I forget the actual price).
I do have one peeve: flies. Who can blame them for buzzing around your table when you have an awesome muffins, but I get tired to having to swat at them when I'm trying to read the paper. However, this is a very small, nitpicky thing. Don't mind me...
Air conditioned.
Nice staff.
Relaxed atmosphere.
Small. 17 seats.
Tasty ham and swiss puff pastry. Smokey and flaky.
Strawberry rhubarb muffin. A little dry but good.
Overall experience was good.
I searched for "Muffin Man" and this place came up. It's what my girl calls it cuz she's really cute, and I thought it was actually called that. It's not, but it comes up. That should tell you something. I bet if you typed in "Muffin King," it would come up still. They rock that hard and Yelp knows it!
Great muffins, great coffee - especially the double-brewed iced variety. Go to Rockstar Sultan of Muffins and get yourselves some major treats. Not the most room in the world in which to sit and eat but at least it's not jail.
Okay bye.
This is my kind of place!
The muffins are freshly baked and actually have large chunks of fresh fruit in them.
There is always quite an interesting selection of muffins including quite a few bran muffins. They have muffins like sweet plum and apple bran or cranberry and mango bran, pretty cool, huh?
The coffee is also good and the decor is adorable!!!!
The owner is so friendly and seems to genuinely care about everyone's muffin experience.
They do close early, so make sure you arrive early in the day!
On a trip to NYC to visit one of my best guy friends, I jumped off the Bolt Bus and made my way to Brooklyn to meet up with him one Saturday morning. I was starving and he had just come from the gym, so we dropped off my gear and walked down the street to Blue Sky Bakery.
What a brilliant way to kick-off my weekend with some unique, baked goodness. To start we tried the carrot muffin with blueberry and cream cheese filling. The muffin was good, but the cream cheese definitely made it happen. Then we had a piping hot apple and walnut muffin fresh from the oven, no filling but the muffin itself was better.
I love the bakery/cafe atmosphere and this quaint, hole-in-the-wall muffin shop did not disappoint.
It's not often that something can render me speechless, but the muffins from blue sky, did just that.
I've tried the pumpkin-banana-walnut , the blueberry-peach-apple and the plain pumpkin muffins and they are all delightful. The thing about these muffins, is that they have the perfect amount of moisture, they are full of fresh fruit and they are not overpowered by tons of sugar, like the garden-variety muffin at most other bakeries/coffee shops.
If you ever have a hankering for a delightful muffin and a solid cup of coffee, stop into this hectic little bakery and prepared to be delighted!
I've never even been here, but my friend brought four fresh muffins to our last day of class, and I have never been the same.
Muffins are kind of one of those foods where I tend to think, "how can you mess one up?" But these muffins were absolutely baller. BALLER. Sadly, I can't remember any specific flavor, but I know I tried all four and liked the one that had cream cheese in it the most. (I never knew cream cheese and muffins went together, but apparently they're like soul-mates to your taste buds.) Oh, and I think I had blueberry, and that one was amazing too despite how commonplace blueberry is. Oh, and I think I had a bran muffin with fruit in it?
Anyway, the point is...I am moving to Jersey City soon, (it's ok, you can laugh) yet I'd be willing to trek all the way over to Brooklyn on an early Saturday morning just to fill my day with edible happiness!
Every time passed by this by this bakery it was always closed. I finally walked in the area this past Friday. I tried their pumpkin, apple, and walnut muffins and I fell in love. If you like chocolate, please try the strawberry chocolate muffin it is totally awesome.
The scenery is small and quaint. It is definitely a place where you can stay for hours and not be bothered. The only bad things I have to say about the place is that they do not accept credit cards and their ice coffee was a bit weak.
But overall, delightful experience.
The muffin/coffee combo is a pretty good breakfast deal - $4 will get you an iced coffee and one of their muffins. The pumpkin-banana-pecan is a good blend of flavors and I like the gooey bananas inside. Muffins are served warm which is a nice touch.
I adore Blue Sky Bakery! They make the most scrumptious muffins and chocolate chip banana bread known to man! The other reviewers are NOT exaggerating! They make a lot of really unique muffins with various ingredients you don't often see used in muffins - rhubarb, raspberry, cream cheese, carrot, zucchini, etc, and their banana bread is to die for. I could live on that stuff.
If you're not in the neighborhood and need to get your fix, Cafe Grumpy in Greenpoint carries a variety of Blue Sky's treats delivered fresh to them every morning!
I always love these muffins. They are so crisp on the muffin top and light and airy on the inside. They're especially good when you get them fresh and the fruit inside is still warm. The counter staff are typically friendly. seems like a comfortable place to just hang out. The coffee could be improved upon.
I've actually gotten on a bus, before breakfast, just to get over to Blue Sky for a pumpkin apple walnut muffin. It's just that good. Also love any of the berry muffins. I'm glad this place does such good business because it means they are constantly cranking out more muffins, which means HOT muffins straight from the oven.
what. the. hell. is with the pumpkin-apple-walnut muffin? i am not a big muffin fan. generally, i think of muffins as the most boring kind of food--they're not cake, they're not bread-- and they don't usually satisfy as much as say, an everything bagel would. plus, the more you say the word "muffin" the funnier it sounds. and apparently, it works with typing. try it. muffin. muffin. muffin. see?
anyways. i digress. about 2 years ago i had a pumpkin apple walnut muffin from blue sky and now i'm hooked. i have to have them. it's not even a question. there will come a minute in the day, usually a sunday, where if i do not get my mouth on a pumpkin apple walnut muffin, i WILL have a meltdown. i dunno, they put crack in them or something, i can think of no other explanation for their otherworldly yumminess.
if you get there and there are no pumpkin apple walnut muffins, ask if they are making more because uusually you can just have a cup of coffee and wait and then get a piping hot fresh from the oven one, which is even better than the standard pumpkin apple walnut muffin, if that's even possible.
if sadly they just do not have them that day, i beg of you not to fly into a homicidal rage, although it is tempting. they have other kinds of muffins which i do not like as much but perhaps you will. many of them have interesting combinations of berries fruits and nuts, which you may be into. perhaps.
Delicious muffins, great coffee! I tried the pumpkin apple cranberry muffin last time I was there - yummy. One day I'll run into the strawberry chocolate muffin that another yelper mentioned in their review - that sounds amazing.
I am the biggest bread snob I or anyone else has ever met. On the day of my inaugural visit to Blue Sky, I walked four hours in bitter cold from Chelsea to Park Slope. Yes, I had subway fare, but it was an adventure.
Once you've had Blue Sky, there are no other muffins. First there's the smell. You could eat 75 other muffins, then walk into BSB, catch the scent of just-made muffins, and swoon with an undeniable urge for muffin #76.
Texture is perfect, with crunchy edges on top and on the sides. Fruit veritably pours out of these guys, and you think to yourself "it's true, self, you would have walked 6 hours for this bite of muffin."
Blue Sky, your melange of carrots and cream cheese (as well as your more straightforward berry muffins) make life worth living.
Best muffins ever. Anywhere. Do you know how hard it is to knock a City Bakery Baker's Muffin out of this running? Seriously. That good.
Everything is fruity or vegetable-y--occasionally fruity AND vegetable-y (zucchini!)-- and very occasionally has a smattering of cream cheese thrown in.
I'm not a big consumer of their non-muffin items, but I've sampled a smattering over the years and have never been disappointed. In particular I recall liking one of the filled croissants (spinach and feta, maybe?).
Because Blue Sky closes at 1 (on week days) and 2 (on weekends), you are almost always likely to find a tasty and warm muffin to go with your coffee or green tea (I'm not big on coffee on the whole, but my mom likes to drink it when she's in town, and she's picky).
The staff is friendly, the ambience adorable, and the owners kind.
I would give them more stars if I could!
Best muffins on earth!! Great coffee too. Love the staff.
I have to disclose to you all...this was the first muffin I have ever had in my entire life. Yes, I am 24.5 years old and never had a muffin. Best believe it kids. So I figured, why not try the best...the place that my girl loves just a little less than she loves me...Blue Sky.
I don't think it was total blue skies in our trek over last cold Saturday, however the muffins smelled damn good when we walked in. I had some sort of blueberry concoction and she ordered something with peaches and bananas.
I tried both and I will tell you I loved the blueberry. I never had a blueberry or it's ilk in my entire life, but this was like Moses parted the Sea of Taste and I shoved the muffin down my throat. I eat fast, but I may have beat my fastest showing (2007 Turkey Weekend Wing Down Featuring A.W. versus J.B., Syracuse, NY). It was that amazing.
Well worth the trip. I had a carb-loaded day, and what a way to start that day with a trip here.
If you like muffins, then the Sky has no limit. Their variety is terrific but I am a sucker for any of the bran ones. That magical ingredient, combined with the sweetness of the fruit, makes for a perfect morning bread treat.
Service is friendly, the loyalty card a must-have and the coffee is good, too. I buy the beans by the lb; their Kickass blend delivers on its promise.
All that needs to be said is that these are hands-down the most delicious muffins I've ever had. I had a basic blueberry that was basically superb. I can't wait to try other flavors - wish I lived closer to the slope!
I love the coffee, the space, and the friendly counter-people. The coffee is strong without being bitter and not at all acidic. The muffin flavors are creative, and the size is just right for a snack. The space is colorful and cheerful with ample seating in spite of its size. This is the kind of place I would love to sit in reading a book for the better part of the day, but unfortunately it closes at 2:00. I bet they could do quite a dessert business if they stayed open into the evenings.
Logo is great. Decor rocks. Purchaseability of art on the walls and kitsch in the cupboards is fun. Muffins, croissants, and lattes are marvelous.
Some of the staff really does have a stank attitude, though, chastising patrons when couples who are obviously together remind the cashier that they will be paying together. (Heaven forbid their orders get placed on two little round metal trays instead of one!) Their hours are a little unfortunate without afternoon hours (how great an afternoon wifi spot would this be???) and their plain coffee is kind of... gross. Seriously, stick to espresso-based or noncoffee drinks here.
That said, I really love the muffins and the lattes, and the customer service is getting better. I can't wait to review this again and add another star when they better deserve it.
Love me some Blue Sky. Delicious muffins, strong coffee and no out of control crowds are the obvious pluses, while the negatives are really minor. (Who plays that damn Party to Go album from like 1996?) My favorite is a just-out-of-the-oven plain blueberry muffin, still hot. When I open it up beautiful blue sparkles pour out like a cartoon... is that weird?
Very cute place, very friendly staff. It smells of butter and sugar and heaven when you walk in. I tried the pumpkin, blueberry bran and strawberry-carrot with cream cheese. They were all delicious, real fruit on the inside, crunchy outsides. Didn't mind eating the WHOLE muffin instead of just the top. Yummy yummy!
Amazing muffins, if only I was a muffin kinda girl I could die living close to a spot like this. The other downside, which I realize is an upside for everyone else in the entire world, is that they combine EVERYTHING. Nothing is sacred. I really enjoy a muffin with AN ingredient, not ALL possible ingredients, that said- they are good and warm soooo warm. The guys behind the counter are so nice, but I have a friend who seems to sense deep hatred from one of them...I'll keep you posted on that saga!
Why not stay open for afternoon loungers?? That's my beef. Oh- and tone down the ingredients on one or two of the muffin options, pretty please?
The outside of this place was off-putting. Never wanted to squeeze in there. So I didn't. But then Gorilla closed down to replace their espresso machines and I had nowhere else to go, I wandered in and... and... crunch!
I ate a delicious plum and walnut muffin with a decent cup of coffee and nice little table.
They have newspapers and magazines and books to pick up. They also have homemade dog treats!
The fluffiest. The fruitiest. The very best. These muffins will make you feel like you are on cloud #9. Walking on air.
OK, enough puns. You get the point, right?
The only downside is their "you snooze, you lose" policy: they are invariably closed by 2pm, so get there early.
Also, some of the muffins sound a bit strange on paper (for example, zucchini and berries muffin), but the taste is consistently impressive.
Muffins-4 Stars I am a Pumpkin Cranberry gal myself
Croissants-5 stars YUM esp the chocolate ones-just buy one and stuff it into your mouth when its warm.
Chocolate Walnut Coffee Cake-4 stars-a smidge dry
Coffee-1 star I have had consistently bad coffee here so I usually get my muffins and go back to gorilla (more on them to follow)
Bonus-decent selection of magazines and the NY Times of the day to read while you are chowing down.
Best muffins in the slope. So many different choices and they are all amazing. Love going here to watch them bake and take in the unbelievably delicious aroma.
I had the biggest most frostingest lemoniest cinnamoniest cinnamon bun ever here. Cookie was "eh." Perhaps I'll upgrade once I try the coffee and muffin combo.
Is it just me or is this place never open? Early morning: closed. Sunday afternoon: closed. Okay, so that leaves a lot of hours, but this is definitely one place that I walk by more when it's locked down than when there's any wafting of any muffins going on. When they do open, they tend to run out of stuff if you don't get there early. Maybe this falls under the theory that scarcity promotes enhances desire for baked goods, but it hurts whenever you're denied a muffin. And the muffins are really good.
Awesome bakery! I used to get either a blueberry muffin or a chocoloate croissant here every morning on my way to work when I lived nearby. Their croissants are the closest thing I've had to actual croissants from France. Damn, I miss Brooklyn.
They rock a pretty awesome blueberry muffin. It is yummy and affordable at just under $2 dollars. Skip the flat cookies which miss the punch, but man.. muffins. yum.
Wow, I had their pumpkin-cranberry-cream cheese muffin and it was serious stuff. Too bad it wasn't mine! :)
Okay, the muffins are pretty good, but not as good as some of these reviews. I mean, they are 4/5 star muffins, but they are like gentrified muffins, is there are such a thing. They have this sugar glaze on top, the dough itself has chunks of the fruit, which is not bad, but it kind of gives the muffin an identity crisis if you ask me. Maybe I just need to warm up to them, but as of now, it seems just a little off. Maybe I'm just weird.
Must have muffins if you in that area. Small bakery but do have lmited sitting area. They're very busy particular in Saturday morning, short wait thought and it worth of it.
