11 reviews for Blue Pig Brooklyn
Blue Pig has the best cake batter ice cream I have ever tasted, period. Unfortunately, I haven't actually tried many of their other flavors (why would you, with that cake batter flavor in the picture??), but other reviewers don't seem to like them very much. If you come to the store with your dog, they'll give him a treat, too. Fast service, if not the most knowledgeable.
Definitely worth a visit. Basically, just get the cake batter and get out of there. And pay cash, apparently.
I don't quite understand the negative reviews here. The ice cream was decent -- definitely homemade, but not the best ice cream I've ever had. And although this tiny little storefront was PACKED (naturally, since it was the first "summery" day this year), they kept the line moving. Prices were as expected -- not cheap, but not expensive, either.
I'll have to check out the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory for a side-by-side comparison. (Oh, the sacrifices I make for Yelp!)
To be continued...
Apparently you don't want to use your credit card at this store either.

In reference to the review below, I totally would NOT go to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. They have a crappier selection, horrendously long line, annnd it just didn't taste like anything special.
At least the ice cream here is more affordable. There wasn't a line when I got there, and they have this crazy blue pig flavor. It's blue ice cream with M&M's, I think. I didn't sample it though.
I did sample some other chocolate fudge brownie ice cream flavor. The texture was weirrrrd. It was just a little too chewy sometimes, a little to watery other times, vomit inducing most of the time... don't get that flavor. I think the chewiness was probably due to aging...
I went next door and got their raspberry swirl cheesecake. The cheesecake wasn't spectacular. Old, dry, almost gummy crust... and the cheesecake had a texture that was almost like dense bread. LIke eating a synthetic sponge. I think the place is called busy chef! T
here was a girl working there -- such a sweetheart. I'd go back to just to remind myself there are still some sweet, decent people in this world. Other than that... nah.
They do have realllllllly cute blue piggy banks though. I have a pic posted!! I want one of each.
Worst.
Smoothie.
Ever.
HUGE ice chunks with a nasty freezer taste + a dribble of sugary juice.
And I agree -- from the sample I tried, this is no "artisan" ice cream either.
I, too, was lured here solely because there was a huge blue pig statue outside the shop (hi grace!). And I wanted some post-Grimaldi's ice cream. Though it claims to be a homemade ice cream shop, everything about this place's packaging screams COMMERCIAL! I tried a couple of flavors and settled for the Mocha Walnut Fudge, which was nothing special (esp after having Grom gelato several times on this trip), though there were lots of big nut chunks. The other flavors I sampled were sickly sweet gross, and a lot of the ice cream was all mushy looking. The sole draw of returning to this place would be the cheap price - $2.75 for a small scoop. Hard to beat that these days.
If you're in DUMBO and looking for ice cream, go to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory instead. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
okay yes, the only reason i went in the blue pig the first time was because there was a gigantic blue pig outside, and that was kinda weird so of course i had to check it out and turns out it isnt a beef shop
Actually its a little ice cream shop with the pretty good ice cream- i recommend cake batter- if ur walking around brooklyn heights this is a definite- but make sure to take ur ice cream to the promenade and eat it in style
What is this?!?! The place is pretty attractive looking and claims to be "homemade", however, this appears to be a huge lie. All of the ice cream came out of big commercial tubs and seemed to be branded. Many of the flavors were dyed with horrid artificial colors and everything I tried had a slightly freezer burned taste. The only reason I got anything was because I really wanted ice cream.
Also, the dude who worked there was clueless. I asked him what was in the "candybar swirl" and he just shrugged. Turns out it was peanut butter. Good thing I'm not allergic, but just imagine if someone was.
I don't know if it was because it was winter, but if you're not going to be good in the winter, why are you going to stay open at all.
When I first tried Blue Pig about a year ago, I thought it was the best ice cream I've ever tasted. I purchased the cake batter. It was creamy and tasted like you were sticking your finger in a fresh bowl of the real stuff. Although I was already stuffed from Oven, the ice cream was too good to be thrown away. Shortly after, I had the same experience with the cake batter. This flavor must be their specialty because I recently visited Blue Pig. There were about 4 ice creams to choose from, given that all of their ice creams were supposedly still liquid. Devastated, I chose the next best thing, artificially colored blue ice cream with M & Ms. Boy did I regret my choice. I should have went down the block and bought myself a pint of Ben and Jerry's. The ice cream substitute was old-tasting and lacked flavor. My 2 friends agreed that their coffee tasted the same way. I have not entered the place again. Instead, take a walk to Dumbo. Although Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory always has a line, it's worth the price.
Don't get the peanut butter ice cream! It's like eating clumps of saw dust. One star for the life sized blue pig outside.

I've shyed away from writing reviews of absolutely every restaurant, pizza place, bakery, etc that I visit, but I make special exception for this one. I have frequented Blue Pig probably a total of 10-15 times over the past two years, and have rather enjoyed a few things, most notably cake batter ice cream with rainbow sprinkles, in their chocolate covered sprinkle cone. I though the yellow cake flavor is purer than the new Ben and Jerry's variety, and I don't particularly care for B&Js fudge swirl. Anyway, I'm writing this review to point out again what a previous reviewer noticed 12/26/2007...that much of blue pig's homemade icecream...is low to mediocre quality storebought icecream. While the employee was packing my chocolate peanutbutter swirl, she actually pulled out the 5 gallon drum to reveal a Dreyers (aka Edy's) ice cream label. Upon further inspection in the care, I found another tub labeled Blue Bunny...which is more or less at the level of key food's brand icecream. Megan did order a vanilla fudge swirl that seemed to be from an unmarked (homemade?) container, and it was definately more airy, whipped than the denser Edy's. Regardless of what I say or think, this place will be packed with moms, strollers, and drunk college kids trying to ride the pig out front. I'm just a little turned off by the bait and switch of this "homemade" joint. Besides, they hardly ever have cake batter anyway...maybe the food emporium label stopped making it for them.
