Long-standing original Fort Worth restaurant tucked away in a strip mall off University. Plenty of space inside, or plenty of space at the bar. We arrived on Friday night and were seated rather quickly given the crowds.

First of all, this is not your typical Tex-Mex menu. Blue Mesa is best described as something akin to "Southwestern fusion" instead of as a Mexican restaurant, which may account for some disappointing reviews. Fewer spicy tomato-and-cilantro based dishes and more masa, blue corn and freshly grilled items, including using a lot of seafood. Had the chile relleno and chicken enchilada combo, both of which were fantastic, accompanied by roasted corn relish and R&B. Sauce had some sort of smokey element, which complimented the dish well.

Also famous for their fresh southwestern salsa and their sweet potato chips, free on every table. The bar is a favorite and trendy place for happy hour, and has quite a good selection of tequilas. Small patio seating outside when the weather is agreeable.

Nom Nom Nom

I so thought this place was going to be a bust but I was proven wrong! I love it when that happens because that means I ate well. Happy tummy = Happy Tiffany.

I love eating with my family because we like to share (family germs ok- other people.. eh not so much)  and that allows us to sample a bunch of different dishes especially since it's our first time here.

We got here a little early for dinner (4ish- I had an appt. with the Apple store at 5:15 so hence the wierd dinner time) which was cool because I got to see the crowd slowly build for the BAD ASS happy hour. I soo will return to this place to partake in this weekday debauchery. You buy a few drinks (Pacifico anyone?) and have self access to their nacho/taco bar. Their chips are pretty awesome because it's not just any regular run of the mill corn tortilla chips- they got the sweet potato chips mixed in with blue and white corn chips. The three colorful delight went perfect with their chipotle salsa dip. There were two kinds of dip, regular and smoky chipotle. My mom said it was a little bland but she's used to the kind i make at home which has a bunch of jalapenos and cilantro. For my taste, however, I thought the dips were great.

I ordered the Spinach and Chicken Spa enchiladas with verde sauce. It was apparently a heart healthy menu item which was a nice surprise. The enchiladas came with grilled asparagus and and sweet potato slices. The enchiladas were pretty good and I was pretty glad it wasn't loaded up with cheese.

My brother's fajita platter rocked. The meat was tender and and it came with a bunch of awesome relish/toppings. I so recommend getting that. You shouldn't be disappointed.

My mom got the Mixed Grill Churrascaritas which was pictured on the menu. It looked like a teepee of grilled meats. Unfortunately it didn't look like the picture. It was laying down horizontally. I mean it makes sense for them to bring it that way but still.. I was hoping to get what I saw in the menu. It tasted good an that's all that mattered.

My brother ordered Taco for a Cause which had steak and shrimp tacos and some sides. The tacos were like the fajitas so it was normal. What stood out was their corn mash thingy. Brian was afraid to try so I took the liberty to dive in. It was an orgasm of sweet corn goodness. The rest of the family took a bite and shook their head in agreement. Yes. It was damn pleasing to the tongue.

Brittany got beef tenderloin tacos. I don't think she liked it too much because the tacos were made with the thicker torillas, tortas I think they're called. The dough wasn't cooked all the way through so that grossed her out.

For dessert, we had the tres flan plate and their churros. The flan was pretty good, a little sweet for my personal liking and the churros were crap. Crap? Well the dough was fried in a oil that wasn't hot enough so it just ended up soaking up oil like a sponge. Soggy oil drenched churros- not exactly what I'm looking for in a churro. :(

So not everything was perfect, our waitress was a little absent and the churros kinda sucked but it didn't ruin our experience here. We'll be back for sure :)

This seems to be a bit of a trendy place.  The food is fancy and a bit pricey, definitely not authentic mexican.  But then again it doesn't pretend to be, and some of the items are really good.

We had 2 appetizers, some sampler plate with 4 items.  1 of them, the taquito, was crispy but they skimped on the filling.  The mini tamale thing was mushy and had mushy filling, but was still taste.  The shrimp thing has a bit strange, the flavors didn't really go together.  A sweet corn cake on the bottom, a layer of shrimp, and a layer of fried onions or something.  The last item was tasty, but again it was a very mushy item.  1 crispy and 3 mushies, the textures were a bit weird.

The other appetizer was a pesto and avocado quesadilla which was really good.  The pesto was present enough to taste but not overpowering, it was a good twist on an old favorite.

Beer selection was a too standard, but at least they had a shiner.  Come on, this is texas!  The service was pretty prompt but the kitchen must have been a bit busy.  The tvs in the bar were either small or broken and only displaying black and white and red.

I'm torn. I really want to write TWO reviews for Blue Mesa because I love it and I hate it.

I'll start with the food.
Meh.
I really hate eating here. Really hate it. The food is uninspired and I wouldn't consider it "Tex-Mex" at all. I've tried several dishes, but they were so forgettable I can't for the life of me remember what they were. The one thing I'll eat, though, is the mini adobe pie. You have to order this specially - I found out the hard way. Otherwise, they bring you out this terrible chicken thing very unlike the mini black bean pie that I enjoy.

Now the happy hour is another story. . .
I would say this is one of the best happy hour venues out there. I'm a poor college student, and it's my go-to joint. The best part is free quesadillas and nachos with the order of an alcoholic beverage- my personal favorite: a frozen blue margarita that rings up at $4.00. For a poor graduate student, spending $4.00 and getting a margarita and a plate of quesadillas and nachos is the best dinner out there (besides left over pizza and a beer... but that's another review). I know I said I wasn't a fan of their food, but you can't really mess up made-to-order quesadillas.
The atmosphere is good, but sometimes it's hard to find a seat in the bar area at peak happy-hour madness. Also, if you sit outside watch for birds and don't be surprised if you get pooped on (I've seen it happen).

Four stars to the second best ever Brunch place. I was going to go with the words OH MY GOD! but figured I should explain why they only get four stars.
First off, they were crowded as hell but there wasn't a wait to sit in the heat. So we chose a somewhat shaded spot on their patio and our waitress was the bomb. I thought there mimosas were a bit overpowering so I asked for a glass of oj and then a glass of bubblys to fix it my way. My favorite drink the world is a mimosas so I say I can make a better one.  Because there was so many people the buffet was quite crowded. I tried the amazing Adobe chicken pie, mouthwatering salmon and a very crisp belgian waffle topped with a heavenly cream/ricotta mixture.

ALL RIGHT, here goes.  You can sit outside or inside or at the bar.  Free unlimited champagne drinks with Sunday brunch.  The wait is terrible, but I am not below bribing a hostess to get in faster.  The brunch buffet is eggs, torts, ham, fajitas, sausage, potatoes, steamed veggies, black beans, cornmeal, adobe pies with chicken or beans, salmon, eggs benedict, omelet bar, small dessert squares, ice cream, flan, waffles, chips, salsa, guac, and that might be everything.  Totally worth the 20 bucks and the wait.  Plus, you can walk off your buzz in the shopping center itself, with plenty of nice places to wander around and window shop.  Oh yeah, and I hear the Friday happy hour is bananas.  Cheap drinks and free nachos?

We had a really great lunch on the patio at Blue Mesa a couple of days ago. The food was great, the staff friendly and energetic. On our first visit the "fire and ice" margarita tasted like a margarita and was really impressively well executed.  On our second visit it tasted like an alcoholic mango drink - this is pretty clearly not a recipe and what you get varies with the bartender.

They serve sweet potato chips, tortilla chips, and two kinds of salsa. I loved the sweet potato chips.

For entrees my husband had the sampler and I had the "spa fish of the day", which was mahi mahi. Both were excellent.

The service was speedy but not overly so, and the atmosphere relaxed. We sat watching the birds court for a while before getting back to our more energetic vacation activities.

Blue Mesa is the best way to spend a Sunday morning. We went yesterday for my (surprise!) birthday, and it was wonderful. I LOVE the blue corn cheese enchiladas, belgian waffles, sweet potato chips, adobe pies, potatoes, migas, sweet corn bread-y fluff, and anything else I can cram on my plate!

I could hardly keep up with the free-flowing mimosas (included with brunch), and my group seemed to love their bloody marys (not included with brunch).

The dude that sang "Happy Birthday" wasn't the best singer I'd ever heard (Simon would say it was very forced and affected), but he sure was enthusiastic, loud and friendly!

One of my favorite ways to follow-up brunch is to head over to Perfect Touch for a nice, relaxing massage.

One of the best brunch I ever had in my life. Freshly made and very good food. Try their Memoosa, Salmon and Adobe Chicken Pie. Service was very good. It was really crowded on Sunday Morning but did not wait that long. Higly recommended.

I guess since the Southlake one is getting reviews, I will go ahead and review the original Fort Worth location.  I have only been for the Sunday brunch buffet, and I think I have gotten a good tasting of what they have to offer.  Their adoble pies are a unique take on tamales and are delicious.  The fresh tub of guacamole is really awesome, and the fajitas are done nicely.  Blue corn enchiladas are nice, but the excess of cheese filling makes it a bit chewy and less gooey. Other dishes are a bit pedestrian, no different than good Tex-Mex food.  Salmon, pasta, beef, and chicken are all offered in various ways, but none stand out too much.  The made to order omelettes lack originality, but are made to your liking.  The desserts maybe the best part, as they offer cheesecake cubes, chocolate adobe pie with molten chocolate center, various cookies, flan prepared in house, and even cobbler.  Extremely reliable Sunday brunch to take friends or family to try something new.  This Southwestern restaurant offers fun takes on your standard Tex-Mex dining.
