Tasty goodness bringing a bit of Portland to Carlsbad, New Mexico.

No kidding-- If you are as West Coastie passing through through Carlsbad, this will be your new Coffee Haunt. It is so cute!

We're with our daughter doing a photo shoot for Just Dance Studio (great studio by the way...) this week.

. I was dreaming of what the perfect Carlsbad coffee house might look like if I lived here to plan one.

Coming from Portland, the coffee capitol of the U.S. of A., our standards are high.

I'd want something a bit off the main drag to avoid traffic noise, a very shady outdoor seating area with lots of lush greenery, and maybe a cozy front porch too. A pergola with flowing grape, jasmine, and clematis vines would shade us from the hot sun.

It's staff would be a mix of hip and maternal-- maybe a couple of hipster huggable grandma/mom/favorite aunt types, and smiling musician wannabes with their piercings and tats. The interiors would need bright and happy colors with a homey environment.

Of course the coffee would have to match all that!

Well... Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!  Just off Canal on Canyon Street, Blue House Bakery was waiting for me almost fitting my my dream perfectly!

It is so much like that cool coffee house from home if you're visiting from Portland, Seattle, San Fran, Austin, or Boulder! Great, friendly staff and eclectic clientele.

Be sure to go early in the morning before it heats up too much for the highest amount of enjoyment sitting outside with friends.

    It's a great spot!

Looking for good coffee on the way out of Carlsbad and stopped by on a Saturday morning. Wasn't open during the posted hours. Disappointed.

In the land of no corporate coffee (due to low population density), a gem of a coffee shop graces the lonely dessert like the blossom of a prickly pear.

The Blue House is the most charming coffee place.  It is off the main street and there is a nice little garden with tables in which you can enjoy your morning coffee/tea.  They serve locally roasted coffee (that's pretty darn good) and freshly baked pastries.  Since its opening back in the early 2000s, it has been a wonderful addition to this community.  If there is a downside to this place, it is that it is only open in the morning (6:00-noon).

Yum!  Best food we had in Carlsbad, hands down.  (not much to choose from, either)  They have a big selection of espresso drinks along with daily lunch specials and a big bakery case.  We got there at around 10:30 a.m., right after breakfast ended at 10 and lunch didn't start until 11.  The lunch (asado with beans and rice) smelled fantastic, but we didn't have time to wait.  We had a ham and cheese croissant and a scone, both of which were homemade and fabulous.

We stopped in on our way to the Carlsbad Caverns. What a treat! We loved it! So warm and homey. The service was friendly and the food fresh and tasty! It's not likely we'll be back but only because Carlsbad is not a place we're likely to visit twice. But if we did, we'd be sure to stop into the Blue House Bakery & Cafe for coffee and French Toast with a side of bacon!

Cute little place in an overall odd town. Service was so-so. They offer one item per day for lunch. On this particular Tue it was grilled ham & cheese and cheese & broccoli soup. Total approx. $9.

    Totally excellent!

A charming caee with good coffee (a bottomless cup for $3.00!) and great eats.  Their filled croissants are sublime and their egg specials are terrific.

Comfy chairs and table and a warm, welcoming staff round out this near-perfect cafe.
