Perfect!  The water was cool and refreshing- not as cold as Barton Creek which to me is a +.  The facility looks brand new and the entire area is very well maintained;  the bathrooms are clean and they have areas/ stalls to change in.  There is a large lawn area where people place their belongings when they go into the river that is a lush green grass and was perfect to hang out on to dry off and relax after being in the water.  They have a few areas with large stone tables and benches towards the back. There are two rope swings and a tree a lot of kids were jumping off.  We were probably the only couple there without kids but it was not overrun with kids at the same time- everyone very respectful of each other i.e. not splashing / kicking/ bumping into you like you are not there.  (problem with other places...)  You can hang in the shallow end which is a bit more shaded or go to the area that is about 5'6" which has a good amount of sunshine.  We just hung in the water and relaxed.  It was perfect.  Bring your own noodle/float/tube as they do not offer anything to rent.  Very clean and the staff was very friendly.  Not a bad drive from Austin either.  No dogs, bottles, alcohol are basically the only rules.  Sad we just found this and it closes after Labor Day, but happy to have found it.

This beautiful Hill Country swimming hole is absolutely incredible!
They offer rope swings, and crystal clear cold water to swim in!
They don't offer any concessions, but you can bring most anything you want to. They charge cash at the door- no credit cards. I think it was $7 for entry.
Unfortunately, you can only utilize one of the two banks of the swimming hole, as the other bank is privately owned. They yell at you if you trespass.
They don't have any BBQ grills, which could be a minus.
There are no official life guards, but they do have employees to help out in the event of a jam. They don't really enforce the rules as strictly as they probably should. I witnessed a kid climbing in the trees, in clear violation of the signs and written warnings. Sure enough, he fell from the tree and got injured. Fortunately, the staff there was quick on their feet, and fished him out of the water before any serious harm fell upon him. They should have been watching him better...

I love visiting semi local swimming holes (Krause, Hamilton Pool). The city of Wimberley just put a bunch of money into this little place and it shows. One reviewer said last year there were not bathrooms. Now they have new bathroom buildings with changing stalls. They have also added nice stone walkways and stone picnic tables. There is still a grassy area to lay your blankets down. The grass was green and well kept.

The swimming hole was nice and clean with two rope swings. One was convenient enough for my 6 year old son to use (it has a platform and ladder to get back up on the platform once you jump). This is unlike Krause where you have to scale a slippery rock to do the rope swing (NO - I did not let my 6 yr old do that one).

Cost: $7 13 and up, $3 under (2 and under may be free but I didn't pay attention because it didn't apply to me).

Pros: located in Wimberley which looked to be a really nice town, beautiful swimming area, family friendly

Cons: no alcohol allowed (ok I know...family friendly)

I have totally fallen in love with Blue Hole. As you walk down the stone path, you're not sure what to expect, but as soon as you glimpse the water, you know you made a good choice. The whole place is picturesque, the water level stays high even during major droughts, and the water is ice cold--perfect for scorching summer days. The hole is shaded by mature trees, so you don't have to worry about getting burned if you want to lie on a tube for a few hours with your feet dangling in the water. There's a nice grassy area across from the water, perfect for picnics and relaxing, and some stone tables. I realize some people are unhappy with the $7 entry fee, but they are doing a LOT to enhance the property and conserve the natural setting. Personally, I'm happy to contribute, especially since I get nice clean bathrooms and changing rooms as part of the equation.

The only downside is that it can get crowded, especially on weekends. Part of the hole is private property, so the area roped off for swimming isn't huge. The kids tend to congregate around the rope swings, but they (and their parents!) can get really loud. All that said, I found it possible to zone out kid-land and relax in the water. I just hope they don' t add more parking because that's the only limitation on how many people get in on a particular day.

Swimming on a holiday weekend in Texas reminds you of what can be both unique and fun about our state, namely, that you can walk through what appears to be someone's extended front yard (a football field's worth of Saint Augustine grass, trees, and hopeful swimmers) and make your way down to a winding and semi- secluded swimming hole.

We dropped in on a holiday weekend and sauntered our way over to an open patch of green in the shade: there's a swing rope here, and the water (at least on this day) was fairly brisk, a nice contrast to the temps outside. And though Blue Hole ended up being a little crowded for our tastes on a holiday weekend, was totally worth it to get out here and let time pass slowly, like it's supposed to do when you forget to have a care in the world.

Best water hole in this area by far!  Great for families that don't want to deal with people drinking because No Alcohol Allowed!  Keeps the riff raff out.

Four stars for this peaceful and serene watering hole. Even on a busy, hot Saturday, there's still plenty of space for everyone to have their own spot to relax.

The group of high school boys jogging the rope swing and showing off was irksome, but I got over it real quick.

Bring cash to get in - $7 per adult.

If you like being kicked out water holes at 6 in the evening on really hot summer days, this is the place for you.
If you never been out of the state of texas and you don't know any better, well once again, this is your water hole.
I could not believe how small it was and it cost 7 bucks a head.
    No bathroom just porta pottys.
no where to explore, full of kids yelling, a real let down.
good thing its kinda close to austin because i was able to salvage the rest of my day off with my girlfriend.
Screw the blue hole and screw wimberley, stick with Krause springs, thats a good family not a water hole racket.

If your like to party hearty and treat every day like spring break, this is not for you. The rangers enforce the no noise and no alcohol rules STRICTLY.

If you want a family spot out of another century, this is for you. There's an enormous temptation to give this place 1 star to keep it secret, but my sense of honor prevails. It is simply the most perfect swimming hole I can imagine. They are doing an enourmous overhaul, turning it into a full scale park, and the new architecture is awesome as well as functional. Only one concern. the hole was near capacity recently. I hope they have plans to extend the usable part of the river (not clear they do) because it was close to capacity already.

Summer in Texas is all about keeping cool and Blue Hole is a great place to do just that.  The crystal blue water stays at or below 75 degrees in the heat of August and since it is fed by Cypress Creek which is spring fed it does not dry up when there is no rain.  The swimming hole is surrounded by huge Cypress Trees which also offer shade from the heat. The trees also offer a way into the water via rope swings!

There is an entrance fee: children up to 12 - 2.50, adults - 5.00, seniors 2.50.

Nice swimming hole with trees and rope swings in Wimberly. It's very pretty and scenic, a little more relaxing than the crowds at Barton Springs during the summer.

It does get closed off occasionally for private functions, so check before you go.

Wimberly also has some cool places to visit when you're done here.

Spouse and I decided to take a weekday off from work and sneak off for a "play date" without the kids.  We chose to go to Wimberly, and as part of the visit, we took a dip at Blue Hole, the lovely city-owned park cut through by spring-fed Cypress Creek.   Our main purpose was to cool off, but our secondary purpose was to see if the place would be a good outing for the kids (4 and 6).

Overall, Blue Hole is a really wonderful.  The water is clear and cold, and the highlight of the park is the set of three rope swings that swing you way out over the water where you can experience the most bracingly wonderful drop of your life.  We spent several hours there, alternating between lazing about in the sun and plopping into the chilly water at regular intervals.  It was heaven.

All that said, though - I do not think this park is a good place for small children or people who aren't proficient swimmers.  There is no lifeguard, the water is deep and dark, there is no shallow area for kids, and the sides of the creek are slippery and rocky.  Plus, the swings require some climbing and coordination to grab onto, the jump over the water is probably too scary for anyone under 7, and there's no way I'd let my kids use the swings until they can drop into deep dark water, surface, swim a couple dozen yards, and pull themselves up a steep bank, all without panicking.

For adults and older kids, this place is great.  But not for little kids.

One final note - this is a completely natural river, so if you freak out when your foot gets brushed by an underwater weed or nibbled by a fish, or if it grosses you out to have to hang on to a slimy algae-covered root to pull yourself out of the water, this place is not for you.

It's tough to beat this quintessential swimming hole on a hot August afternoon.  The place is small and modest but the water is cool (warmer than Barton Springs) and very refreshing.  It's a great spot to unwind with family and friends.

It's 40 minutes from Austin and depending on where you live, the Salt Lick may be on the way home.

Brrr! That water is cold. I visited with my family over the holiday weekend, and it was awesome. The rope swings are fun, and there are plenty of grassy spots for a picnic or lounging, so bring a big blanket and some towels.

This is the kind of swimming hole I always wished I lived near as a kid, rather than the boring chlorine filled pool surrounded by concrete that actually was around the corner from me. It's dreamy, big, and the ropes hanging from the trees make me wanna yell "kowabunga!!" Of course if you'd rather just relax and lounge about, it's perfect for that too. I recommend for both adults and kids. However, there aren't lifeguards, so children should definitely be kept a close eye on by parents.

Possibly the most beautiful and refreshing swim in Texas.  One end of this stretch of the creek is very shallow for toddlers, and you can see that there are mothers and small children down there most days.  It progresses nicely, deeper for big kids, then deepest for more proficient swimmers.  Rope and chain swings, huge shady trees, cool water may become murky where many children are jumping in and stirring up the silt, but is otherwise crystal clear.  It is perfect for anyone of any age.
