Blue Grass Airport
7 reviews for Blue Grass Airport
I think the upgrade is completed ahead of the World Equestrian Games. Everything seems shiny and newer, and there are more bars and the bookstore upstairs has more selections. While it is definitely more expensive to fly into this airport, the lines are usually short and quick, and, if you do the math, it's probably about even if you fly into Louisville and either have someone come get you or rent a car.
What I'm REALLY hoping for is that someone gets smart and starts running a shuttle between Lexington and Louisville...now THAT would be awesome!
This is the best airport in the US. The bags beat you to the claim area--never stolen and never lost. You walk right out to the curb and hop in your ride or limo or taxi or rental car. You can arrive 20 minutes before the flight and still have time to get a nice cup o coffee. Easy to get to, handy to town and to Keeneland, easy to get around. Short or nonexistent lines. Nice bars and even a real bookstore. The only drawback is you cant fly everywhere...but there arent many places that can boast that anymore. Everyone is friendly and...wait for it...POLITE! Five Stars.

In general, I would say that whole deadly plane crash thing would be a reason to take off stars, but it's like it was with Jack in the Box, now that they're all paranoid, it's probably the safest airport in the country.
In fact, I would give Bluegrass 4 stars, except it's too damn expensive to fly into. I've mostly given it up in favor of flying into Louisville and having family come and get me.
So first of all, it's a small airport. Kind of dinky, really. But at the same time, it's not crowded, and unless there's bad weather at the other end (*ahem*Chicago*ahem*) flights are rarely delayed. There's not much choice of food or shops, but you can get a bite to eat and some bourbon balls to take home (I wonder if you can take bourbon cherries on an airplane?)
Unfortunately, the coolest thing about the airport became obsolete with 9/11 when they made it so only ticketed passengers can go past security. In the middle of the airport, there's an observation lounge where you can go up to the 2nd floor, and there are big windows to watch the planes. If you're there early and have some time to kill, it's a nice place to go sit and watch the planes. Everyone forgets it's there, so it's usually quiet.

For a smaller city this airport has it alllll.. Trust me. Fly into a Lynchburg, Dayton, Santa Rosa or Daytona Beach and you will find LEX huge. Its a good size for the city and offers a lounge for frequent fliers, Internet, restaurants and so on. You really cant complain, it was never meant to have everything as like a hub city. And its not nearly as expensive as nearby airports, but this trend changes all the time. Security is usually quick for all the times i fly out of uniform.
Small and expensive. If there were any competition, it couldn't compete--almost all flights connect through Cincy & ATL (Delta), Charlotte (USAir) or Detroit (Northwest). There are a few direct flights, but these seem to come and go.
The runway is dangerously short.
Louisville and Cincy are better options, especially Louisville since Southwest flies out of there.
A nice small airport that is currently in the final phases of an upgrade. The terminal was spacious and empty. Security Line was quick to go through. Surprisingly when I looked a tickets for my cousin's wedding, Lexington was the cheapest to fly to. Might get a fourth star once the upgrade is completed, but then the next time I fly into Lexington might be years away.

They play really good music here-- always the same ultra cheez sentimental journeys playing soothingly over the speakers. It's a nice airport for a town our size, but yeah it can be pricey and they are really strict about standing vehicles out front. They keep it nice and clean, though, and they even provide branded ziploc bags to passengers for those dangerous liquids..
