Big fan!!!! I think I've had the Blue Dog 3/7 days this week. Really really healthy, but beyond delicious!
My favorite picks:
Strawberry Fields Smoothie.
Breakfast Sandwich on a croissant (sausage or bacon, I switch off)
The Blue Dog Brew (Chai Latte with Hot Chocolate and Espresso).... I know I know, what you're thinking.... how can that orgasmic sounding drink be real? Well it is, trust me, and I like it.
Homeade granola bars --- they are giant, and chewey to perfection.
They also have location on W 56, in case you find yourself creeping up that way and need your fix.
All around, this place is great. -
Review from Althea A.
From the name of the place, somehow I was expecting a diner-type establishment. Maybe a funky, artsy diner, but the reality was a bit fancier than I had figured on.
It's also tiny, which contributes to a bit of an 'exclusive' feel to the place - there're only 3 tables, and a small counter. All the seating is metal bar stools, so it's not very comfy, but it's still a nice cafe/wine bar atmosphere.
There's a nice, but pricy wine list, and a smaller, but equally nice selection of beers. Unfortunately, the Belgian brew I wanted was out, so I ordered an Ommegang. I ended up being brought a Hennepin instead... I suspect that they were also out of Ommegang. I didn't feel it was worth complaining about, since the atmosphere was relaxing and the waiter was really nice.
A bread basket was brought out to start, and I knew the food was going to be great. The bread was all freshly baked, included a raisin-walnut loaf, an olive loaf, and a plainer bread - all were fantastic.
I started with the crostini, which are three different toppings on perfectly crisped slices of baguette. I mean it about the perfect - some sort of scientific principles must've been applied to get the bread to be crispy and flaky all the way through, without being even slightly hard or chewy. It was kind of amazing. The mediterranean-style toppings were good too!
For an entree I got the daily special, which was a chicken burger. Again, this was a really gourmet take on a burger, with fancy greens, pickled mini-gherkins, a nice aioli, and a side of truffled potatoes. Delicious! -

What a cute cafe that's right in Chelsea. I often just walked past this place on my way to Goodwill next door (heh) but my sister had a deal for this place, so off we went to Blue Dog Cafe.
First impressions: the place is really tiny, only like 3 tables and the bar counter area. There are no chairs with backs, just stools, and the tables are really long and narrow. It is dimly lit and the windows were fogging up.
The waiter Michael had a French (?) accent so it was really cool listening to him talk. My sister and I ordered flatbread pizzas. I got the roasted tomato and she got the mushroom one. I can't ask for much better flatbread pizzas. The portions were just right (small but doable) - my pizza had caramelized onions (THE BEST) and the whole pizza was just ever so slightly sweet. My sister's pizza was like the antithesis of mine but it was very good. Deep rich spices and/or cheese.
The bread that comes with your food is pretty good too. I particularly liked the fruit bread that had some raisins or cranberries in them. Yum!!
Michael was so nice. His excellent service made the experience all the better. -

Blue Dog Cafe was a staple in my weekly routine while I was travelling regularly to NYC. My coworkers and I often went to visit our visit our favorite bartender, Nick, and enjoy wine and a late dinner after work. The place is so tiny and cozy and just beautifully simple inside. You almost feel like you are in someone's beautifully decorated kitchen with your own personal chef :) The food is always very fresh and is typically pretty quick since the place is so small (I hear the wait at lunch is longer, but I have only done dinner there.) Highly recommend the beet salad and black truffle pizza. Nick is usually ready to suggest a wine you might enjoy based on what sounds good to you that evening. I definitely miss this place! Will be visiting next time I'm in NYC :)

There needs to be more late night cafes in the city. What if you just want to study, all night long?
We came here on a drizzling night around 11pm, looking for some wifi cafe. We asked if we could have our laptops here-it's a small, cozy place where you can see the kitchen and there's about 4 tables. He said sure, so we sat down, made ourselves comfortable, and ordered some drinks.
I had the strawberry lemonade, which came in a cute glass (top of a wine glass). My friends had some beers, and I also shared a pot of green tea pomegranate-it smelled and tasted delicious! Our server was the best-VERY personable, friendly, refilled our pot with hot water...etc. It was a LOVELY dining experience!
He also didn't rush us/kick us out as it went past midnight, but we knew we had to go, so we packed up our stuff and headed out. We chatted with him several times as well-we'll definitely be back! -

I had a delicious dinner at Blue Dog last night! I was eager to try out the Chelsea location since Blue Dog has been a generous food donor to non-profit events that I run. I LOVED the ambiance of the restaurant for dinner...if you are going on a date, or celebrating your birthday with your best friends, this is the perfect location, so cozy.
The food is amazing! I love the bread for starters -- it's not your typical basket of bland rolls...then we had the hummus/beets appetizer which was very savory, followed by the fig/sausage flatbread...with white wine. The entrees are satisfying but light enough to leave room for the BEST dessert of all -- cheesecake!!
I look forward to returning to Blue Dog to try the breakfast and lunch menus next! I hope you have the chance to check it out...and while you are, remember that you are supporting an incredibly charitable business that is also owned by a rockstar mom-and-daughter duo! -
Review from Nicole F.
I had a very delicious risotto and salad here, but woah nelly, the small portions did not fit the prices! (even given the included rolls). I did enjoy the atmosphere, which was nicely dimly lit and very, very small, but next time I'll go for lunch and stick with sandwiches.

While I always loved Blue Dog for lunch, I was cynical about their new dinner menu. Boy, was I wrong! First, the newly renovated space makes you feel like you're sitting in your grandmother's kitchen. To the many negative reviews about service, maybe someone at Blue Dog got the message, because the owner came out and checked on us and made us feel welcome, and the rest of the service was fantastic as well. The server we had, Nick, went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we had everything we needed.
Most importantly, when it came to the food, we were blown away. The dinner chef Hugo sure knows what he's doing. The veal meatballs are AMAZING, I was shocked by how flavorful they were and the combination of raisins, pinenuts, and ricotta cheese had us licking the plate clean (literally)]. Was also impressed with the skirt steak, tender and had obviously been marinating for a while, it literally melted in our mouths.
Wine pours were generous and we generally got the sense the entire staff there were putting our experience and happiness as their number one priority. Overall, you must check out the new dinner menu at Blue Dog, and I suggest doing it before word gets out about it (they told us that they haven't done any marketing yet). -

I didn't have dinner here, but I was very impressed with the cheesecake and the tea selection. I came here a couple of evenings ago for an after dinner hang out and I had a great time. The place is very chilled, and the bartender (I can't remember his name, but he is a blonde dude with a low-pitch voice that would relax a cardiopatic patient) was a lot of fun. I would go back just to chat with him, so if you are his boss, give him a raise! :-)
They have a small menu (as small as the place itself), but from what I was able to see while I was there, the food looks good. The wine selection is little, but I would try at least a couple of them, which look interesting.
Definitely a great choice for a date. -

Came here on a late friday night and the bartender/waiter was super nice and friendly. He was from California, so maybe it's the chill laid back attitude that he had.
He let us bust out our laptops and hang out and linger. What was even better was he refilled our teapot with more water and he was even willing to stay later than the 12 midnight closing time.
I don't say this much about many places but I definitely had an excellent experience here. -

Manhattan, NY
Blue Dog is rapidly becoming one of my favorite places to get lunch around flat iron. They offer a tremendous selection of hot and cold sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and beverages; and everything I've tried has been wonderful!
The selection board really is massive, particularly when you start getting into smoothie and other beverage variants, so I would be courteous and stand off to the left hand side when you walk in while you make your decision on what you'll be having.
After eating there twice, I would more readily recommend that you make a selection from the Hot Gourmet Sandwiches, rather than the cold ones. The chicken salads and the like are all tasty, but are mostly all premade and have been sitting for the better part of the morning. The Hot ones, however, are made fresh in the kitchen behind the counter area, and come out beautifully. My favorite, and top recommendation if you're ready for a lot of cheese, is the Bacon & Brie sandwich (G-8): it's a crunchy, fresh baguette topped with honey, bacon, and copious amounts of brie. Amazing!
Also worth noting are two other menu favorites: the Glorious Morning muffin (really more of a bread), and the Almond Dream Smoothie.
If you're headed over to Blue Dog and are with a group of more than four people, don't count on sitting down. The close quarters high-tops in the front of the cafe are really only suitable for posting up and eating your item either by yourself or with one other diner. No shame in taking it to go though! Madison Square Park is right there, and if the weather is right sitting out in the sun and enjoying your Bacon & Brie baguette may be the best part of your work day. -

The revamp of Blue Dog didn't include customer service or competence with the staff. The menu is harder to read than the original (have fewer options, or get paper menus for people to read during their loooong wait).
Today: Service was slow and pretty poor, as I've always experienced. The person in front of me asked if he could do a half salad, half sandwich. The cashier said no while the staff member behind her said yes. I ordered a iced green tea, but the one she gave me was, um, orange. I ask her if it's a mistake and she says no. (Also, she has no pennies left and wants to stiff me three cents.) Stepped outside, took a sip...yup, mango. No way was I gonna shove my way back inside to complain. So instead I come to Yelp. -

This place has come a long way in the last 12 months. The Sandwiches are excellent. Really.
The actual cafe is a little small but well decorated in Hamptons-esque color scheme. -

(Sorry my first version was a little harsh)
I want to say nice things, but....
I used to go a few times every January to use the Gift Certificate my employer gave us, and then again every now and then when I was craving a real iced latte in the summer. Their sandwiches and salads are spectacular. They have delicious pastries and baked goods. And they use a decent espresso. It's just that the owner and her staff....Oooof! I have nothing nice to say, except there was this one guy who used to work there last year who was really nice, and the cashier today was very kind, and even said thank you. It's unfortunate that the owner and every other employee seemed miserable and paid it forward.
Clearly they're doing something right at The Blue Dog. The remodel is beautiful. It's just not pretty enough for me to venture back in unless I'm desperate for an iced latte. -

Yum-a-dum-dum, right in my tum! Itty bitty sandwich shop that whips up a wide and wonderful variety of sandwiches, salads and fresh pressed juices. They only use super fresh, high-quality ingredients so you know whatever you purchase, it's gonna have that feel good factor.
My favorites have been the roast beef with havarti, mustard and pickles on a baguette (it has a cute name which I'm blanking on); the killer chicken salad platter, as well as the itty waldorf chicken salad take away box that they offer next to baby sandwiches you can pair with a side salad or soup.
They do have a few tables to eat-in, which I've done often (and as other reviews have pointed out, isn't ideal, but you're not there for ambiance), but most seem to get it to go to eat at their desk or Madison Square Park down the street. Blue Dog is definitely on this girl's go-to lunch roster.Listed in: Lunchie Places in…

This revamped and up-scaled small-but-not-tiny restaurant is a much welcomed changed from the not-so-inviting coffeehouse it was not too long ago. I just never got a welcoming vibe from the place...BUT someone was smart and changed it up - so much so that all that seems the same is the address and name. Great atmosphere - warm, calm, aesthetically-pleasing - and great menu. Healthy juices served in wine glasses (love it!) great salads and entrees. And a nice wine list too. If you nearby it's an ideal place to meet friends in an area that is still lacking in decent places.

Was visiting on vacation from Denver. Stayed close by at the Sheraton.
I'm writing this review alone on the Dirty Chai. Best. Damn. Drink. I. Have. Ever. Had. You set the bar and you set it high. We were here every day indulging on this one drink.
Signed, a girl who lives in a city where good coffee does not exist.
P.S. Do you deliver 1500+ miles away? :-( -

I ordered delivery- a vegetarian sandwich and some chips. Not hard. I received it an hour and 20 minutes later. This was after calling to complain about how long it was taking, and was told it usually does not take this long.
Went is finally arrived, I discovered (after the delivery guy had left) that it was the wrong sandwich- and turkey! So nothing I can even eat since I have been a strict vegetarian for years. I called and they refunded my money since I used a credit card, but I never got a lunch (well, just chips). They really need to get their act together. -

Brooklyn, NY
Let's start at the very beginning:
Once upon a time, I took my first job in NYC and was impressed by establishments of this sort. A fine selection of tasty sandwiches, salads, soups, pastries, AND espresso? I was sold!
After about 3 months on the job, I realized that eating at Blue Dog on a frequent basis was not only obliterating my lunch budget, but also testing my patience to the breaking point. This is the opposite of what a lunch take-out situation should be like--expensive, crowded, and frustrating, every freaking time.
So skip to the present: I'm staring at my lukewarm redeye that just cost me an even $3. While I was intending to leave the $.17 as a tip (not mandatory, but ultimately, expected), I now regret not demanding my change--as it was not even offered, that was my mistake.
Last visit brought similar frustrtation to my life--let's run through the facts:
--ordered a simple 1/2 sandwich, 1/2 salad combo at the counter (though menu was crowded by people in the seating directly in front of menu--really, they should have considered this during their redesign a few months ago!)
--was informed 10 minutes later that my sandwich couldn't qualify as part of the 1/2/1/2 combo because it had bacon on it
--upon trying to reselect a new sandwich, was told that only options 2/10 would not qualify, as they were "hot" sandwiches
--informed the employee that as there was an entire "hot sandwiches" side of the freaking menu, that clearly, it was more than just #2 and #10 that would not qualify
--finally picked something i was not excited about...
--waited 10 more minutes
--was handed "my order", walked out the front door of the place and opened the bag immediately, just to be sure
--promptly turned around, and handed them back the ENTIRE bag, of which nothing, not one item, even began to resemble my order
...and now this, you lukewarm $3 redeye. Why do I bother? ONE STAR.
***update: having just returned from the microwave, it now tastes like gas station coffee. I want my money back! -

WOW the food here was great. Especially the flatbread pizza which didn't cost much. It had thin prosciutto and a sweet fig-based compote, plus I think goat cheese and spices. It was awesome. So was the bread, the spread, and the coconut gelato. The guy Nick working there was cool to talk to, and the cook was a nice, modest man who takes pride in his food. MINUS ONE STAR because the seats are insanely uncomfortable.

Review from Melanie L.
Brooklyn, NY
Have to agree with the general gist here -- food is quite good but damn is the experience mixed. Employees used to be extremely grumpy, making order a coffee and cookie feel like something I should apologize for. Now I see new faces, still smil-ish, who act a bit more like they like their jobs. But there is an air of grumpiness that hangs over the place, makes me think managers must be abusing these poor people as not all NYC counter staff are so unhappy looking.
Nothing takes the joy out of a organic salad for lunch than feeling like the person serving/selling it to you - or making it - is abused in the process of doing their job.
Wish it were otherwise, the sandwiches are great. They have a turkey with turkey bacon that I love. Go back occassionally to see if its a happier joint.
Maybe the managers should drink their detox drinks and smile and say thank you to their employees more? Just a thought. -

Great Sandwiches. Average service. Revitalized Decor. Good Prices. This place recently went through a much need renovation to improve the flow of customers. However they have a speed issue when it comes to preparing the sandwich. Now I am used to all kinds of service but at lunch time it needs to be fast and they are certainly not fast or even close to it. Fortunately, the sandwich makes up for it. My personal favorite is Herbed Tuna Salad, Avocado & Havarti Cheese Sandwich. Mmmm good.

Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY
This place is all sorts of delicious--Close to work and Thank God, because stopping here on my way from the subway to the office on Monday mornings is what makes it all better.
A dirty Chai with soy milk and a pastry for breakfast followed by a 1/2 soup half salad or a fresh mozzarella and tomato with pesto on a baguette are my usuals. The staff is very friendly and usually start to get to know you by the 2nd or 3rd week in a row. It is small and crowded, especially around lunch time, so make sure you call ahead for a pick up if you don't want to spend most of your hour just waiting.
Next time you're in Chelsea make sure you check out Blue Dog! -

I don't know if it's good or bad that I read all the yelp reviews while I was bored but oh boy... everyone is right about the service here downright SUCKING. If you are wondering how a sandwich counter type place could have such sucky service, you will find your answer here. The guy working the register was just a total prick, I wanted to punch his stupid face. There was a plate of cupcakes and I gestured to one and said "is that carrot cake?" and he just looked at me like I was the biggest idiot on earth, didn't even look at the cupcakes and just said "uhhh...where?" Uhhh... on the plate of cupcakes, you bastard. And then the lady after me asked how it was going at night since they started serving dinner and he said "oh, I don't work dinners, I would have to kill myself if I was here this often." Uhhhh... what? Shut up you weirdo, you're at work. My sandwich was amazing though. The cupcake was meh.

What happened to this place? I start coming here in early 2009. Not only did they have awesome sandwiches and salads, but their daily specials were amazing. Don't be fooled newcomers the specials they have now are nothing compared to the specials they had before (i.e. cheesy orichette pasta, swiss meatballs pasta, ravioli mixes, etc). Even their old staples are bad. Ordered their grilled cheese will caramelized apples, and the apples were hot, but definitely not caramelized. To add insult to injury they tried to pass off havarti and feta as gorgonzola and cheddar
Now they have the same generic salads day to day. My suggestion, boil some Israeli couscous or pasta, go to Just Salad on 23rd, and mix up and you'll have lunch for two days.
Also, the staff is definitely not helpful, especially when your "quick lunch" takes over a half an hour to get even if you're in the actual restaurant ordering..
Oh yea...they got a C on the healthgrade website.....ewwwwwwwwww!

Review from Erica J.
Though I appreciate that this cafe has taught my coworkers who originally hail from the UK to love brussels sprouts, I can honestly only give it three stars.
Pros: Proximity to my office, decent selection of vegetarian/vegan items, and some fairly creative non-lettuce based salads.
Cons: The amount of time it takes to get your order (even if it's already prepared), the decidedly unhappy employees who are less than friendly, and the fact that they never add olives to my side salad even if I specifically request them.
Overall: A decent lunch spot with solid food if you have the patience and energy to deal with the staff and absurdly long line. I might give it four stars if I go after the lunch hour rush. -

Before we delve into the actual review, I would like to offer some advice on blue dogs in general.
1. If your dog is blue (in terms of the color), you should take him/her to the vet. There is something wrong. Unless you painted him/her blue; in that case, you have problems that I can't solve in a Yelp review.
2. If your dog is blue (in terms of his/her mood), take him/her to the Dog Spa/Hotel* down the street from here. If I were a dog, that would cheer me up.
_________
The Blue Dog Cafe a great little cafe run by a sweet lady who will occasionally offer you a free sample of pound cake, if you're lucky. On the wall is a great big board listing all kinds of delicious sandwiches. (I would've called it a sandwich board, but that means something else.)
Everything I've tried has been good, but I keep coming back to the hot pastrami sandwich, which comes topped with avocado, havarti, Russian dressing and perhaps some other things I can't remember. It's awesome. But, I feel compelled to tell you that:
This is not the place to get a huge, meaty pastrami sandwich. They give you about 1/4 the amount of pastrami that you'd get at Eisenberg's over on 5th Ave (which is not necessarily a bad thing).
This is the place to get a well-made, well-balanced, TASTY sandwich, with a sensible amount of meat. Accordingly, it's no surprise that the Blue Dog seems to appeal to the ladies, more than the gentlemen. There is always a line out the door, and more often than not, an extraordinary percentage of the clientele is made up of cute girls.
If I was a creep...well, I am. But if I was a SINGLE creep, I would always get lunch here. As it is, I only sometimes get lunch here.

Good quality pastries. I opted for an Almond croissant and large coffee, for about $5.
The croissant was really great, the coffee was ok.
I'm glad there was no line when I walked in here, because before I left there was about 5 people in line, and the place is a little tight for space.
All in all, I'd go back here. -
Review from Amy H.
I needed a more or less nonperishable sandwich (i.e. no meat or diary) to take on a long trip and stopped by this place for the hummus and veggie sandwich. It was unfortunately not good all around. The bread seemed dry and old, the hummus almost nonexistent, and the lettuce contributed the bulk of the meal. The veggies did seem fresh, though.
Much too expensive for the amount of sustenance. -
Review from Deirdre M.
Brooklyn, NY
Staff is rude and rushed, even though yesterday I was in there at around 3pm and was one of two people. Honestly, the guy barely looked me in the eye and didn't say thank you. I expect a little more friendliness at a place that has taken such pains to appear homey and neighborhoody. One time I waited at least 10 minutes in line all for the Hungarian Mushroom soup which sounded soooo good and was exactly what I was in the mood for, only to be told briskly that they were out. No apologies, no "the lentil is really amazing - do you want to try it?".
Food is mostly yummy, except my chicken soup was more like a bunch of cubed chicken and carrots with a little bit of broth added in (maybe because of the 3 o'clock hour).
I want to love it, especially because there is not much like it around my work hood, but not sure I can deal with the 'tude and the lines. -
Review from Nicole A.
You are dead to me.
Pumpkin spiced coffee. Awesome. You serve it to me filled to the brim. Awesome. But I need milk. So I sweeten up my baby with splenda, mix it around to my heart's content, and then ask for a larger cup to add just a teeny bit of milk. I stress teeny. Instead you take my cup and SPILL OUT some of my coffee to make way for milk and say "You ordered a small, ma'am."
You spill out my coffee? Really? After I've used my magic to create it The Nicole Way?
We argue about this. You believe you're right. I believe I'm right. I'm also shocked and appalled. The customer is always right. Right?
I'm done with you. You have mediocre sandwiches and a cute little name with the whole dog thing going on but in a city where coffee and sandwich shoppes are a dime a dozen, customer service is paramount. Learn some. -

I met a friend here, and got some lunch. This was just what I needed: a super small place, a great gourmet sandwich grab-and-go, with great drinks.
Dirty Chai and #8 sandwich; Roast Beef, Havarti Cheese tomato, roasted peppers, wasabi mayo, on baguette--A great way to lunch!
Make sure to explore the different kinds of drinks they do, they are wonderful. -
Review from Holly S.
If I decide to splurge, it probably has something to do with clothes, shoes, etc. Food and grownup beverages are often involved, but salads... not so much. So if I'm going to spend $11 on a salad, it better be the greatest salad in the world.
And though it was good, $11 is kind of steep for what was essentially cold cut turkey, cucumbers, and a few slices of turkey bacon on top of lettuce. The cafe itself is small and quiet and the menu provides many options for sandwiches and salads. They could totally do for some outdoor seating, too. -
Review from Miriam W.
I could tell you about how uncomfortable the seating was. Or that people reaching over my head for napkins, straws and utensils was annoying. But really, the magnificence of the tuna melt trumps all that. Though next time, I will get it to go!
And the fact that the folks working behind the counter manage to remain kind amidst the frenetic lunch rush? Nearly miraculous in my eyes. -
Review from Keiko S.
Mmm...I really like their sandwiches and ready-made salads. The bread (especially the whole grain) and the ingredients are consistently fresh and tasty. They have several kinds of cold salads on display, and though I haven't had the chance to try many of them, anything with fruits and cheese, I dig. Coffee is...alright. My Americano comes out a bit diluted. But the yummy CUP CAKES make up for that. They also have pre-made sandwiches for those rushing to get out...or feeling claustrophobic. The place is very tiny; you'll be lucky to find a table.
My only complaint: it closes at 5pm everyday, so I can't buy back the salads for (late) dinner. -
Review from Sam P.

Ok, Ok, I get it. You're small. You have lines out the door pretty much all the time, and there are like 5 tables total in the whole place. But do you really need to put up a huge sign that says NO LAPTOPS in big letters? That just makes me feel unwelcome. Yes, I realize that we laptop people park ourselves for hours to do work. I mean, the fact that there's no wi-fi is enough of a deterrent, but do you have to be so explicit? Also, your staff is kind of surly.
On the other hand, great coffee, killer sandwiches, yummy salads and your peanut-butter cupcake almost made me cream my jeans. Sigh...I guess I'll be getting it to go next time. 3.5 Stars, but I'm rounding down for meanness.Listed in: Lunchtime!

Food is delicious.
Service is horrific. Beyond appalling. And I'm Chinese-- aka, who gives a sh*t about service? bc good food is worth it.
But when the barista is yelling "Shut the door!" across the room in your face, a huge sign screams "NO LAPTOPS", and servers say to your face "Let's just get her out of here"-- even to-die-for hummus, perfectly baked seven-grain bread, and California-fresh gourmet salads cannot get this CA girl to be a repeat customer.
Maybe if they charged a little less and made the experience a little bit less like being at the DMV, the yummy food and coffee would actually be worth it.
