I tried this out of force because my friend really wanted to. He kept hailing that he heard it tastes like In-n-Out. Frankly, I'm from California and I'm not amoured with In-n-Out but I took one for the team.
I tried it, and is it like In-n-Out? Hardly. For someone apathetic about the food chain, I was disappointed. That says a lot doesn't it?
Oh well, I have to give stars for the mango chilli dipping sauce...it's pretty good! Makes me want to eat fries even though its pure starch.
Another star for the fresh juices, I liked my apple pear ginger juice. Fresh & Tasty :)
After hearing all the hype and the "aw man this place is just like In-n-Out" business, I had to try it. Lets face it, I cannot live without In-N-Out.
Apparently, I will continue to live without In-N-Out, because this place is sad reminder of how mass confusion and drunk students create false hopes.
This place is weak. Not only is it dirty, the burgers were sad and soggy, lifeless and needed to be drowned in ketchup.
The fries tasted like ass, all I could taste was the month old fryer oil.
Please do not go here expecting a good burger... thumbs down!
So I was having a craving for some good ol In-N-Out, but being on the east coast makes this impossible. I was told Blue 9 is the closest thing, so I gave it a shot.
The burger was pretty good, but not the best I've had. That said, the best I've had was probably a $20 burger. All I can say is, the later in the night you come, the better the burger will taste.
I must say though, that dipping sauce for the fries is golden, and most likely the reason why I keep returning.
I've heard a lot of things about Blue 9 so when I walked by today I stopped into try a regular cheeseburger with onions and a small order of fries. The people there were pleasant and I got my order quickly.
Positives: Burger and fries were nice and hot.
The fries were...er bad. Soggy, over salted at some parts and way too thin.
The burger itself was okay. I don't understand what the big hoopla is about the burgers here. The meat was thin and the burger itself was kind of small. The whole thing tasted pretty fresh though. That is all I can say. Seems like a great drunk food though for people stumbling out of bars in the area.
what can i say ? Its just one of those burgers done right. the melted cheese on top of the double decker. I wasn't even hungry when my friends and I came in. But i had to get a burger and try it, and I wanted seconds afterward. I swear I wasn't even hungry. It's worthy of a try, Im not saying its the best burger in the world, but its similar to five guys, which I love as well.
I went to this place for the first time last night after walking past, and remembering people usually talk about it. I ordered my burger (regular cheeseburger) and fries. The burger was pretty small, but it did come with onions, lettuce, tomato, and thousand island sauce. It was pretty good, and it reminded me a little of In N Out Burger, but definitely not as good. I noticed after I ordered that I could have ordered it Mediterranean style, which sounded exactly like In N Out's 'animal style'. I'd like to try that next time.
Overall, decent for the money and the quality of the burger.
love the food - burger was amazing, though small, and the french fries were awesome too. came with a coke for $7.50 which is mad cheap for new york.. def returning!
This place is extremely average. If you're expecting in and out, you should skip Blue 9 all together, because you will real disappointed.
The burger is really nothing special. Its not bad, but its just not that great. The fries kind of suck, but the chili dipping sauce is really good, so that makes up for the fries.
If you're on the block and want something quickly, go for it. If you want a good burger, go somewhere else.
Yo, don't sleep on this place, for real. They've got quite a good, inexpensive burger, though I'd argue that they could be a tad bit bigger.
I love their free "wanna be big mac" sauce they got there as well. They caramelize the onions god like, too.
Don't expect eating a burger at Blue 9 to be a big deal. Truth is that the place is great, tasty drunk food. Thats it. Just a tasty burger for all the NYU kids coming back from a night of schnanigans. Not a landmark that all bruger lovers need to try. Otherwise, its just greasy but better than average fast food.
Note to self: Mango Chili dip is AWESOME and I need some of it soon
I really don't get it.
Ok, so I'm from L.A. so I know what an In-N-Out burger is. However, if this is NYC's answer to In-N-Out, then I'm moving back. The place was so the opposite. They were not by any means friendly, their meat and buns were dry, and their dining area wasn't exactly squeaky clean.
Needless to say that I won't be going back, nor would I recommend this place to anyone else who knows what a real burger is. Suck it up and go wait in the lines at Shake Shack.
Blue 9 is the fall back burger spot for me, it's cheap, fast and a lot healthier (I think) thank McDonalds.
Firecracker style is a killer if you're not prepared for the level of heat, you can tell them to go light on it and they might...
Medieval Style is your plain, regular burger
Mango Chilli comes with their signature sauce on the burger...
=====
The fries are good for the most part, sometimes you get these short stubs that maybe were fries in a life before...and sometimes you get these long elegant taste strips. It's a toss up.
Slightly eccentric crowd, if its soccer season the game will be on...pretty decent space for a fast meal. I'd recommend it, hell...I'd prolly see you there.
People say this is like In-N-Out burger...because of their thousand island dressing that they put on it. And it tastes pretty damn like it. But nothing will ever beat the original. But until I come back to cali, I'll be going to blue 9. The fries were a little seasoned too so that was good. And they deliver. So if you go to NYU or New School or any other college around there, they'll deliver to you on those late study nights.
As a former NYU student I am embarrassed that it took me 7 years of living in the city to finally go to Blue 9 Burger. I was walking around with bff Anna H. and we were deciding if we should have lunch. I kept pointing out I didn't have cash and needed to use a card. She wanted Blue 9 so I said fine and planned on eating elsewhere. Then after more miscommunication I finally realized they took cards. Ahhh, yes. The best feature of any quick lunch is accepting a debit card.
Medieval style is delicious, mango chili sauce is great, fries are, well, they're pretty stubby and I should have eaten them with a fork but oh well. Definitely worth stopping by for a quick bite and I probably would have been full with just a burger. Next time I must try the smoothies.
It may not be In 'N Out, but this (and shake shack to an extent) is the closest clone you are going to find in NYC. DO NOT MISS the Mango Chili dipping sauce, very crack worthy.
Pretty solid burgers! Went here for a late dinner before going out around the East Village. Wanted a burger, got what I wanted. It was an affordable meal- 7 bucks for burger, fries, drink. The fries were pretty tasty though they were served a bit cold. I got the classic burger, with onions, and whatever sauce they put on it is pretty yummy. My friends got the same, and one of them also got a smoothie- which was also good.
The place itself is just a regular kind of burger joint- nothing fancy. We went there around ten pm and there was plenty of seating. They also serve alcohol- we saw a small selection of beer behind the counter.
They are open late too. If i'm in the mood for a burger next time im in the East Village will definitely check it out.
Altho I just gave this place 3stars, their burgers and fries were good. There's just noting special about this place. And like many others said, it's like a copied version of CA's In-N-Out burgers. Not a place to go if ur a tourist looking for a burger in NY that will blow ur mind off. Nevertheless, if ur feeling like eating a burger and u live near this place, Blue 9 Burger will be a good choice.
Reminded me of Nine Guys Burger & Fries. Cheaper and better in my opinion. Fries were great and the burgers were juicy; delicious and left me wanting more.
Can get a bit sloppy for take-out eating, but that's what it is all about in my opinion.
Where else can I eat a mediocre burger and decent fries while watching a skeezy looking dude wearing mom jeans and a Cosby sweater bust open an ATM and pull a wad of twenties FROM HIS PANTS only to put said wad of pantsy twenties INTO the ATM???
Oh, pretty much everywhere on the LES? Oh, umm, ok, got it. Thanks.
I walked into this cave of a burger joint the other day and was magically transported back to my freshman year at NYU, where I bought a Blue 9 Burger, fries, and a vanilla shake about twice a week. Despite the flashbacks to my horrendous freshman fifteen experience, I ordered some fries. My lawd. That mango chili dip is heavenly. And I can never get enough of greasy shoestring fries. The place itself looks like a cross between a gas station and a cafeteria, but who cares about ambiance when you've got a cheap, delicious, completely unhealthy meal in front of your face?
This isn't just drunk food, it's the drunkest food. Blue 9'll sober you up in seconds flat.
Story Time: I once saw the lead singer of The Strokes chowing down all by himself in the corner. Ballsy 18-year-old that I was, I kicked him in the shoe (the same pink Vans that my ex used to wear...too weird) and wished him luck with their next album. He tried to smile and said something but his mouth was too crammed full of burger, so I squealed "okaybyemrcasablancas!" and ran like a girl on fire.
Celebrities...they're just like us.
P.S. They now sell smoothies. I've been reassured of their high quality but I remain suspicious. Stop trying to reach out to the health nuts, Blue 9. You're a grease den at heart.
Not a bad burger, but not a particularly memorable one either. It's essentially the same thing as Five Guys, though many people also draw comparisons to In 'N Out but as I'm from the east coast i'm really not certified to make any judgements based on that. The burger was alright and the fries were decidedly average. I've had similar burgers with better taste for the same price elsewhere. This place would be okay if I was in a rush and in the area, but otherwise I'll be taking my money elsewhere.
i hate that i like these fuggin burgers but sometimes i just want trashy food in mah grill.
1 step above fast food.
If you have to be stuck in the East Coast for an extended period of time you're eventually gonna start craving an In N' Out Burger. In the city, the closest thing you're gonna get is here at Blue 9 Burger. I can't really tell what I would think of the burger as a separate entity because I am always tasting it through the lens of In N' Out imitation, and on that level it excels. I notice that some people here have complained about the quality of the burger upon delivery. Hello, people...Burgers, especially greasy ones, are meant to be consumed fresh. Once you take it to go the bun is bound to become a grease shlop pile. I dare you to find the burger that tastes better outside of the restaurant in which it was served.
My friends, I embarked on undeniably idiotic, yet amazingly journey on Monday- to try not 1, but 4 burgers on the same day. Yet today I live to tell the story, a story full of beef, and cheese and onions and cholesterol.
The first stop was at Blue 9 Burger. Not sure what the term "Blue 9" means. Its undeniably catchy, and despite the connotations of the color, it feels like summer. And most definitely feels like West Coast- which is appopriate because this place is very obviously a wanna be In and Out, in terms of the way the burger is presented, the various "styles" you can try them in, the sauce that is on the burger and even the melted cheese and slightly charred piece of meat.
There's no denying this combination is delicious. It'll have you wanting to lick the wrapper. At the same time you know this is just a lower grade version of the best. The meat is a bit overdone. It lacks the over the top delicious sloppiness of In and Out, and the store- well its just plain dreary. And as such it must be scored on a relative scale.
It's a good burger and its pretty damn cheap. Worth visiting in the East Village, but ultimately not quite the East Coast equivalent of West Coast Burger genius.
What time does this place close on the wknd, seriously??
Bar None isn't the best place to go on a Sat night but I usually concede because I know I can go to Blue 9 aftewards. Sad? Maybe.
Not crazy about their fries but their burgers are JUICY. I usually like my buns toasted but for this place, I'm not picky. Something about their buns... it's pleasantly sweet. The thousand island dressing is also KEY. I don't even put ketchup in the burger. The burgers are also a perfect size for a snack.
Also, it's so cheap. I tried using my cc here but they had a $5 min - which means you need to get 2 burgers.
The Blue 9 burger is essentially an In-N-Out double double... the beef is never frozen, fresh and flavored well, although not as tender as it's Californian cousin. They also put fried onions, pickles, and thousand island dressing on their burgers but the condiments are not chopped up and mixed in with the sauce. The sauce as also kind of runny. You also have the option of wrapping your burger only in lettuce.
So four stars because I live in NYC and this is the closest thing to In-N-Out I've tasted here. If I were out in Cali, I think I would take maybe 2 stars away.
Don't expect gourmet here... expect good, greasy, flat top grill, hangover-cure certified deliciousness!!
This my friends is no closer to In n Out than McDonalds. The formula seems the same - fresh ingredients, a simple menu and a secret sauce... however it is far from a good east coast substitute for a double-double. For that I would go to Shake Shack and order their double ShackBurger.
The place looked all together grungy and if the state of their dining area is an indication of their kitchen then I'd be worried.
There are at least 3 burger joints in the immediate area where I would rather eat and in this order Shake Shack (but the lines annoying), New York Burger Co. (slightly more expensive), and Stand (little too gourmet and pricey for the everyday burger). I got the standard cheeseburger and fries which was good but nothing to right home about, maybe just a notch above fast food. The burger was good but light on the meet and seemed to be drizzled with grease (because it wasn't coming from the small patty) and the fries were perfectly crisp but a pretty salty. My suggestion would be to get the double cheeseburger.
all around good burger
kinda small for me (i'll get the double next time)
but i lurrrrrveeee thin fries so i was diggin those
and the friiizeeee cheese sauce. bangin'
the mango "special sauce" on the burger is pretty deezy too
needless to say, i'm not usually around this area that much but if i am and i'm in the mood for a burger (always), i'd definitely stop in for a burger & fries
and they serve beer too. holla
I've been going to Blue 9 for the past 5 years and it's just a solid fast food style burger.
Made fresh to order, the cheese on the Blue 9 is always just oozing out the back and sticks to the paper which I, without shame, will delicately peel off for dessert.
Sometimes their fries are a little stubby, which can be obnoxious, however recently they've gotten better - so BOOYA!
The mango chili dipping sauce is awesome.
Recently they started serving beer here too which is a plus.
Something they've also recently added is this bullshit health shake thing, which I can only guess is the pussiest attempt to latch onto this global health awareness kick or whatever.
STICK TO YOUR GUNS!
DO YOUR GREASY BURGERS & FUCK THE HEALTH SHAKE SHIT!
YOU DON'T WANT TO END UP LIKE BETTER BURGER DO YOU!?!?
Jesus.
(i love you.)
I only go back to this burger joint for one thing and one thing only - THE MANGO CHILI SAUCE!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!! WHY DONT THEY SELL THIS STUFF?!?!?!
I'll tell you why, because if they did alot of people such as myself would not go back. Seriously people, the burgers and fries and milkshakes are just ok, nothing special at all. If you slapped that mango sauce on a shoe it would taste amazing. But again, go for the sauce!
So it ain't no Shake Shake, but the burgers are alright. I loved the crispy edges, and the tasty sauce. I was less enthusiastic about the slightly slimy iceberg lettuce. I hate iceberg lettuce. And while Danny Meyer made me forget that I despise American cheese, Blue 9 did no such thing. There was a gross gloppy glob of it congealed in the corner. Yuck. Why can't cheddar cheeseburgers become trendy? Other than that though, it was pretty tasty. Hit the spot as a late lunch, and was just enough to tide me over for dinner. Would certainly consider popping in again, but would skip the cheese, especially since it costs extra.
SOOOOO GOOD! Was looking for a sports bar that served food. Walked into Nevada Smith's but the kitchen was already closed. They said we could bring outside food. Walked over to the Blue 9 to get a cheeseburger and fries. Took the tray and walked back into Nevada's and ordered a Heineken to wash it down - PERFECT MEAL!
The only cheeseburger that beats this is the World's Best Sandwich Truck on 20th (btwn Park & Madison).
This place is the closest thing to In-N-Out I've found here in NYC. I repeat In-N-Out!
For all those who have spent time in L.A. and were not anorexic while there, may this double cheeseburger replace your double double.
I left off a star for two reasons; it just doesn't have the grand fast food atmosphere I want if I'm going to sell my foodie soul out. If I'm eating white bread and pickles I want the branding to go with it. And it's more expense than my favorite Cally chain. That said, it's five bucks for the big boy. And a block away from the best soccer bar in the city, Nevada Smith's. Score.
had me some Blue 9 Burger delivered.
the burger was so greasy that the parchment it was wrapped in became a part of the sandwich itself.
the fries... limp and lame and soggy.
would i order delivery again...
very very unlikely.
Pros: Supposed to be In-and-out clone, but not quite there.
Blue 9 deserves 3 1/2 stars. My husband didn't want spelt pizza so we made a burger pit stop for him. The burger reminded me of In-N-Out -- nice thin patty and lots of veggies. The shake was good. The fries were awesome. I can't even remember the decor. This seems like a popular spot for students. Though I found the prices to be a bit much for what they were serving.
P.S. My husband believes this place is 3 stars. He's not a Yelper.
Better burger than Shake Shack but SS still has a better shake. But no insane line means it's won my fat clogged heart.
I was pretty stoked to try this place out because it was likened to In-n-Out, which I sorely miss. For the record, I like skinny patties and smaller burgers.. so this place did it for me.My cheese burger was a freshly prepared bundle of sloppy goo.. and my BF's Blue 9 (aka, double-double animal style) made him quite the happy one. After all, it was him who woke up randomly with a burger craving.
Don't come here for the decor, the fountain soda or the hygiene levels. Do come here for the really yummy, creamy mango chili sauce, the fresh-fried fries, and the sloppy burgers.
Also!! I didn't even get a stomach ache from lunch! I was totally expecting and waiting for it when I saw that the person preparing my burger was wearing pretty much what he'd wear when hanging out.. Back-turned basecall cap, baggy polo shirt, 3/4 baggy pants, and chunky sneakers. In. The. Kitchen. But then again, I love eating off the street carts. So just mayyyybe my stomach has gotten more tolerant to dirt.
