Eh...

Came here for dinner with a group of friends. The crowd seemed young (like high school young). It was really packed -- my friend and I got there before the rest of our group and we had to wait 30 minutes for a table, except there was no room to wait and it was raining outside, so we awkwardly stood next to the counter.

The margaritas are cheap and strong. The food was not the best. I will probably not be going back.

Meatheads... Oops sorry, I mean Blockheads, is exactly what you think it will be. If you're thinking under the radar and swanky dining.. well then you just aren't thinking now, are you? C'mon people. it has BLOCK in it's name. and HEAD. The name alone sounds like some scary clown from Peewee's Playhouse. Clearly not everyone is an expert at naming things.

Back to the review. This place serves its purpose. Free bottomless chips and salsa. $3 Frozen Margs-- add $1 if you want to add flavor.. I'm not that kind of girl, so I refrained. The margs were decently fused with enough alcohol (shocker when the price tag is 3 bucks).

Another shocker was that with that $3 price tag our waiter was extremely attentive... except at the end when we wanted the check. I don't think he wanted us to leave. I understand. I wouldn't want me to leave either.

I'm so ill from their burrito. I ordered the veggie burrito because I was dying to try the curry tortilla. It was delicious, but the burrito was a 2. The vegetables were HUGE. I almost choaked on a broccoli stem. The entire stem was left on the piece. I was just disappointed at the lack of attention paid to detail on my lunch.

Their salsa was pretty bland, the guac had to be doctored, and the hot sauce was not hot. The 2 stars are given to the waiter and busboy because they were amazing and quick. We never had an empty glass throughout our meal. The second star goes to the price. It's pretty cheap for the amount of food you get. It's just too bad the quality is a disappointment.

3 words describe Blockheads: Delicious, inexpensive, and quick.

Can't go wrong w/ Blockheads! It feels odd to write a review NOW, after years of snacking at this place, but they deserve it nonetheless.
I've been to 3 of their locations and their service is impressively uniform.

You can't go wrong w/ the super nachos Grande (ground beef for me) and the Burrito grande. The drinks are great, particularly their new Bulldog!

You ever have one of those nights at a restaurant where you think "well, it can't get any worse!"  Well, here at blockheads, it does.

When we arrive, they tell us proudly, 20-30 minutes will be our wait.  Translation: please wait an hour and a half, be prepared for major attitude from the crazy clip-board welding hostess.  "The table before you is taking a long time to leave.... they're hugging".  What does that even mean?!  We've been waiting for over an hour for this "group hug" to be over.  How about getting us one of those other tables that people have been flooding out of?  Plus, they don't take reservations so don't even try.

Also, be prepared for plates that arrive incorrectly, and just get dumped at your table, despite your protests that it wasn't what you ordered.  Oh yea, you get charged for those, so don't bother sending them back.

And, the manager of the night did nothing.  Disappointment all around.  Food was bland and dry... but of course that could be because it wasn't what we ordered!

18% automatic gratuity on top of that?  Even after we had to talk to the manager several times.  You have got to be kidding me!

Garbage  - its' how you are treated, its what it smells like, and it is what they are.  Terrible.  I can't think of a single good thing to say.

I have a soft spot for Blockheads since it's across the street from my old apartment on 3rd Avenue. The last time I had been there was 1997, when the place was decked out like a 70's basement with yard sale furniture and black velvet Elvis paintings. Blockheads has had a serious renovation - it's much more 'hip' (and darker) but the food is just as good as I remember, with just a few exceptions:

Free chips and salsa were less than meh. I think the salsa was Pace Picante Sauce. Boo.

A little disappointed in the $3 frozen margaritas. They did not seem that strong to me - after 2, I couldn't feel a thing. Maybe we had a stingy bartender that night.

On the plus side:
We ordered guac since the salsa was a bust. On the small side portion wise but yummy.

I had the beans and brown rice plate, smothered with jack cheese and a side of sour cream. YUM. $6.50 and completely fulfilling. I've really missed the fact that you can get brown rice and tofu sour cream at NY Mexican joints- not something we have down in Virginia - so that in itself was a treat.

If you look at the reviews here, most are either 1 star or a 4... those 1's didn't get seated immediately or had a quirky problem. Even without my extra star for nostalgia, Blockheads is a solid value for Mexican grub and drinks.

I REALLY enjoyed this place! When my friend suggested a place called "Blockheads" for Mexican, I must admit I was a little skeptical at first. It didn't seem like a very mexican name, so I was worried about its authenticity.

One thing that I love about New York whille visiting is that Happy Hours still exist, unlike in Boston. I was able to get a delicious Margarita for 5 dollars.  I tried the non-dairy burrito just for the sake of curiosity and I was blown away at how delicious the tofu sour cream was. I had never tried it before and it really went perfectly with the rice and beans. It added more flavor than regular sour cream. I highly recommend that choice even for  regular dairy eaters and lovers.

I can't wait to go back on my next trip to NYC.

Oh damn you, Blockheads.  Because of your close proximity to work, this has been the go-to spot for after-work shenanigans with co-workers.  They see us coming and we ALWAYS get a seat, even when it is packed.

Damn you for your strong and tart $3 margaritas (though, the flavored ones are too sweet at $4), your genius Mexican Bulldogs (margarita, topped with a floater of tequila and a Coronita), and your $3 tequila shots.  (plus free chips and salsa)

While your food veers too much on the side of Taco Hell and home-made El Paso Mexican for me, honestly, who cares after a couple of frozen margaritas.  Note: those build-a-rice-or-salad bowls are HUGE, like salad bowl huge.

You will see me again for another sweet, drunken, brain-freeze, sugar and tequila buzz night, my dear Blockheads.

+ Amazing outdoor seating (right next to the street!!) on a warm summer night!

+ You can substitute TOFU for any meat. (THIS is amazing).

+ Freaking gimungo portions.

+ $3 frozen margaritas that taste like heaven. Also, two were sufficient to get me drunk.

+/- Not sure if its a pro or a con, but their drink (I forget what its called) that is a frozen margarita, a shot of tequila, w/ a mini corona shoved upside down. Pretty sure its enough to get anyone wasted.

+/- Free tequila shots at the end of the night!

I love outdoor seating and people watching...this place is amazing!

My friend and I decided to do lunch with some drinks.  She recommended that she knew this spot with good drinks and good food.  And we ended up at Blockheads.  I ordered a nacho grande with chicken and that bish was good.  Matter fact those were the best nachos that I ever had in a restaurant before.  The tortillas werent bad, the creamy black beans were very good to say I dont like black beans at all, and the chicken was seasoned nicely (every other time I have nachos with grilled chicken the restaurants never season the chicken...they just throw them on the grill).

However, while we were there I had two drinks... a $3 strawberry margarita which was good and a drink that had a margarita mixed with sangria and a botttle of corona on top and that bish was good too.

So would I come here again...yup!....Would I recommend others?.....yup!

I've been to Blockheads several times and each visit I've fallen a little more in love w/ the place. The margaritas are inexpensive & delicious, and the folks at Blockheads are generous on the tequila! The nachos w/ the ground beef are ridiculously good and the burritos are huge! I wish they'd bring Blockheads to Miami where good Mexican is almost nonexistent.

HUGE portions.

When our orders came, I was immediately wordless: if Mexicans brave everything into their margarita blender, there must have been, at least, 8 shredded babies wrapped inside those spilling quesadillas and burritos. My shocking level at the time was quite comparable to the first time seeing Yao Ming in the elevator and mistaking his upper thigh as the wall.

And of course, the chicken salad was so completely overflowing I could find neither the brim of the plate nor its bottom. Or that was just because I was recently too used to hundred-dollar-pp sushi meals whose every course left 92% of the plate, me, and my wallet practically empty.

Decent chain mexican food, love the cheap frozen margaritas ($3 for regular, $4 for flavored) and free chips & salsa. If you're adventurous, go for the red nosed bulldog (sangria + margarita + coronita). Also, try the black flower (1/2 margarita, 1/2 sangria).

Come for the burritos, stay for the cheap drinks and rooftop area. Don't bother with the nachos, they are a sad joke.

Blockheads is average Amy.

The prices are good for the drinks, but I don't really like alcohol with my meals, so meh. People don't take burritos seriously enough here though. I usually get the jerk chicken, plantains burrito, which sounds amazing right? It's not. It's good, but with that combo, you can defs do better. Which is why when I open my jerk chicken hut, I'm also gonna fry platanos on the side and have a burrito station. real talk: I'm on point like KG on the court. holla

The portions are big enough for two girls to share, I think you kind of have to, otherwise you might pass out and die.

Chips and watery salsa comes free.

Guacamole is aight.

I like the 50th st. location much better.

This location, on 33rd, is bigger by far, but they still have yet to master how to seat people. It took 10minutes for the hostess to even TALK to us.

The frozen margs are cheap and strong, but nothing too great- thanks to all the sugar that's added. I do love the quesadillas, and I am always a fan of a place that offers free shiiz ie. chips and salsa.

It's decent, I'll be back, if only for the proximity to work.

Dear Blockheads,

Who do you really think your fooling?

I know that the "original" flan your serving is really Goya that you probably bought in bulk at Costco.

My mouth now taste like powdered milk and old cinnamon after one bite.

There's nothing original or good about it and you know it.

Burritos?  Cheap drinks?  Sock Monkeys?

Si senor!!

It took me a while to get over my phobia of the place, since a real tool that I know raved about it - but once I swallowed my pride and entered the hallowed halls of Blockheads, I was not disappointed.  The Murray Hill location is conveniently located to where friends live and work, so I've been here a few times.  It's not as great as the recently discovered Midtown West spot on 50th and 9th with it's sick outdoors area, but I'll be damned if they don't make a really satisfying burrito.

Plus, you get to look at pictures of sock puppet monkeys, which is oddly soothing.

***Text taken from my review of the Blockheads on 50th and 8th. Just disregard comments about the awesome outdoor seating, which in effect knocks off one star***

This is easily the best Blockheads because of the enormous outdoor seating they have in the World Plaza.  The only bad thing about that is that it attracts such a crowd that you could end up waiting over an hour and a half to get a burrito and a couple drinks.  Your other choice is to try and jack a table on the far right side because they don't take reservations for that half.  That is kinda fun, as one time I just sat down at an empty chair as people had requested their check and we all just b.s'ed for a while.  Found out they was going to be a wedding that weekend in New England.  So that is a cool, random NYC experience.

The drinks are amazing, especially when you consider the price.  The burritos are great too, but they are enormous, so think about going with the mini-burrito unless your starving.  Highly recommend this Blockheads, just not during peak hours.

My mango Margarita was delicious and only 5 dollars! Screw Subway, they should make commercials about that! "Five, Five dollar grande Margaritas."

The ambiance was interesting, dark yet festive. I'm not used to going to Mexican restaurants, I usually go to taqueria's or taco trucks (DON'T JUDGE), but since those don't seem to exist out east, except for Chipotle, I was down to come here. The food was OK, a tad whitewashed, but what are you going to do? I ate mine, hey! The prices aren't that bad either, but it isn't quite the steal as my Margarita was.

I like this place for it's decently priced margaritas and foods and the chillaxed vibe.

Is it fancy? probably not.

But it sure is a good spot for a cheap happy hour in the murray hill area and given with the bad economy, most of us are probably going to choose this place over a Dos caminos any night.

I liked the feel of the place better than the food, but that's ok.  A $3 margarita makes me feel a lot better about everything.

Big plates but mediocre quality.

The menu options seemed to have a lot of moving parts (read:  potential for the kitchen/waitress to mess it up) so I just went with a chicken burrito.  I'd go as far as to say I'd choose Chipotle or any other generic mexican place based on food, but the waitress service was much more relaxed and very friendly.

Did I mention cheap mararitas?  Next time I'll have to go after work or forget to go back to work.

I never physically entered blockheads, so I am solely rating the quality of the food, my takeout experience.

1 point for their spiffy takeout menu (very colorful & fun, keeps my ADHD in check)
1 point for speedy delivery
1 point for reasonable price
2 point for good quality food.

Although I must mention, my coworker once has the toilet bowl hugging version of their food. I on the other hand, was much more fortunate that my stomach is built like a brick house!

Except for one disasterous experience in the Bahamas for my 25th birthday. Come to think of it, I never really got a chance to say my choice four letter words to the people of the Bahamas for claiming that conch fritters were edible. But that neither here nor there, after all we're talking about Mexican food right?

Sooooo in sum... Try blockheads you'll like it and if you don't I send you a full plate of Bahamas Conch Fritters, that will teach you a lesson or two.

So I've been here a lot since I moved to this city. I meet up with some friends almost weekly here and never felt compelled to review it before now. See, when it comes to Mexican food, I love it, but I'm really boring. It's the quesadilla always -- I rarely deviate. But I've recently been advised/commanded/threatened by my well-meaning MD to seriously cool it on foods like this (genetically-inherited heart thing, thanks Dad!). So imagine my delight when I actually perused the rest of the Blockheads menu and discovered that they will substitute the Monterrey Jack cheese for vegan cheese! And the sour cream for tofu sour cream!

Initially, the idea of being forced to eat vegan cheese would have prompted a tantrum fit for a 2 year old out of me, but thanks to the recommendations of Allix T., my favorite vegan and former prank war partner, I actually found that there exists vegan cheese whose flavor cannot be discerned from that of regular cheese (at least not by my -- admittedly unsophisticated -- palette).

The vegan soy cheese at Blockheads, however, doesn't live up to that ideal. It is perfectly passable, but the texture is a little weird. Kinda mushy. However, slathering the quesadilla with salsa mitigated the gag reflex to some extent. I probably won't be ordering the tofu sour cream again though. The taste was fine, but it had the texture of a watery ricotta cheese. A little bit too weird for this lifelong carnivore.

All in all, I seriously commend Blockheads for its efforts.

I cannot attest to the food here but I can attest to the potent happy hour glasses of dino tranq margaritas being served.

2 of these fine injections will leave you DE-LIRIOUS.  Ample amounts of free chips don't hurt the cause.

I don't think you'd come here to eat a fine Mexican dinner, but if you just got done with a long day of working for the Man and are ready to ravish grub or goblet this might be the place.

Love love love the cheap margaritas. And the chips and salsa that come with them! I want to buy the salsa in bulk if possible. I love it that much. Food is pretty good too, huge portions.

Its a fun after work place because its not too crowded but fun. The only thing that gets me is the decor. It was after Thanksgiving and there were still spiderwebs and other various Halloween things.

Definitely a fine place for some mexican food and margaritas.

I think Blockhead's needs to be judged on the rating scale of a suburban chain restaurant, not a New York City mexican joint.

Blockhead's is the Applebees of mexican food.  It's consistantly... ok.  You're not going to get surprised here in a good or bad way.  The burritos are giant and standard.  The chips/nachos are alright.  the portions are large, the price is right, if you're looking for authenticity you are in the wrong place.

On the other hand if you're looking for a place that's going to get you full and drunk at a decent price, you really can't beat blockheads.  Set your expectations correctly and you'll have a fine time, or have a few frozen margaritas before you start on your meal and everything will taste that much better.

You know the commercials for dog treats where a little dog is freaking out and the voice over says "BACON!  baconbaconbaconbacon!  Iiiii wannnntttt BACON!"  ?  Well, I felt like that, except it was chicken.  Chicken was the only thing that sounded good for dinner.  I guess we call that a craving?

I was in the neighborhood at a friend's place and Blockheads was one of the first places she mentioned that would deliver.  I perused the menu - the prices seemed a little high for burritos, but hey we're in New York, right? - and I landed on the plate of messy black beans and rice with a side of.... CHICKEN!

The delivery came quickly but I thought it was odd that I had to flag down the delivery guy and ask for change when he ran off with the 20$ I handed him (9$ tip on an 11$ bill is high right? ya, I thought so too).

The plate of rice and beans was enough to feed a family of four, but we all know I ate almost all of it anyway.  The rice and beans on their own were great, but the huge chunks of chicken were so good.  Ahhh, Chicken.  Craving satisfied.  I'm good to go for another month or so.  Thank you Blockheads.

I've only ever been here for brunch, so I can't judge whether the burritos really "come to life." But based on what I've eaten there, I doubt I'll ever try the burrito.  The food is distinctly average; nothing awful, nothing amazing.

My jerk chicken wrap (not very Mexican) was fine.  It wasn't spicy like true jerk chicken.  It has sweet plantains in the wrap--unusual but not bad.  The portion was kind of big, so this place is a good option if you're hungry.  I chose a salad instead of rice and beans with my dish, and the salad was generous.  If I'd gotten the rice/beans, I would not have been able to finish it.

Service wasn't very attentive the last time I went, but we let it slide since we weren't in a hurry.

But $10.95 for a hearty meal and unlimited mimosas? That's where they get me every time.  It's a solid brunch option if you're really hungry and/or hungover.

Sadly, this place isn't going to get one of the best reviews from me.

I came here to meet my ex-boyfriend. The place was his suggestion. He was thinking of it more as a place where we could grab a cocktail or two, but it being only 12:00 PM, I decided to opt out of that plan. I ended up getting quesadillas and a salad. The quesadillas were fine- I mean, really who can you screw that up? The salad, however, was the worst I've had since I've been in New York. It was dry and sad. There was nothing about it especially tasty, and when I finally decided to use the dressing which came in an emptied out Corona bottle, I nearly spat it out. It was just dreadful.

Even though I'm kind of trashing the place, the wait staff was pretty amazing. The sure get their due kudos. The just couldn't save the place for me though.

I'm sure this place is great if you want to get schnockered in the afternoon before going out to a bar later in the evening. I also have to admit that their prices are very reasonable, which is I think one of the reasons we went to this place. But the old adage, "You get what you pay for" really applies here. If you want something cheap and quick, this place is for you. Just don't expect quality, or anything to pleasantly surprise you. It won't.

Oh, I've heard there are a lot of places out there offering amazing brunch specials. I don't feel like researching them, if you know of one, can you send it to me? Thanks!

what else can beat a strong $3 margarita?? it was delicious. 2 drinks down and i was buzzed. outdoor seating and upstairs area is nice. music downstairs was a bit too loud. party hip-hop songs do not really fit my mood at 7pm on a tuesday night.

as for the food... free chips and salsa to start, then i had tacos with chicken. it was good, but not anything to die for.

i would def go back for the drinks though ;)

I wouldn't have put one star here if I didn't have to.
Went here last night for a 'girls' night with 5 of my friends 2 of them got there at 8:30 and put their name on the list. 3 of us got there at 9 (which was our meeting time) So my friend goes back in and checks and she says half an hour...ok cool.

So 9:30 rolls around and the hostess is outside down the block chatting with patrons from another bar....weird. So my party and 2 other parties are like whats up where is this chick?

My friend finally finds miss mia and she says see that table right there that's for  your party were gunna clean it off get your party together in 10 mins we'll seat you. Mean time I'm miss impatient and at 9:40 was saying lets go eff this. Well 9:50 rolls around the table is clean and she seats 2 other parties.

EXCUSE ME!?

Not to mention the fact that when servers tried to get her attention so she could do her job she kept saying "I can't deal with this right now"
Miss...I don't know if you know how working works...but...well..you have to work!!

So I recommend going down the block to Rodeo Bar...much better service and much less lazy.

Blockheads is a guilty pleasure of mine in Manhattan, as the food is nothing to write home about nor the environment. Yet since I moved to NYC in June this has always been a regular spot for me for its $3 strong frozen margaritas. They are so cheap and delicious that I can't resist going here from time to time.

The quesadilla is too big--you can't eat with your hands...have to use utensils because beans, cheese, and guac are spewing out the sides. The nachos are pretty decent and so are the tacos.

Bottom line: go here after work for the margs and chips and salsa. Not much else.

It was the groan heard round the world when a good friend of mine announced she was going to have a big good-bye dinner here before leaving for 7 months.  Blockheads? In Murray Hill? Really, Rach?  But apparently they were the only cheap place in town that would accept a big reservation (there were over 20 of us) without a lot of hooplah, so out we went to 3rd Ave for some remarkably mediocre Mexican food.  This, people, is why I'm a good friend.

I will say this, though: the margaritas are good and cheap, and the service was surprisingly attentive considering the rowdy mess we were.  So all in all, one star for cheapness, one star for nice staff, and one star for the drinks.  But you can do MUCH better than Blockhead's for Mexican - even in this godforsaken neighborhood.

Not a bad place but it's not really good either. if you want real mexican food stay away, these people have taken a lot of 'creative liberties' on their food. Burritos and wraps are too soft, the fillings are always a little bit different in proportions (more beans here, more beef there) but it all tastes good, and it's really cheap. I come here when I dont feel like cooking something up and want a quick meal that's not McDonald's or Taco Bell, but it's also good fro bringing a group of friends for cheap, strong drinks. Beware tho, the music gets progressively louder as the night goes on, and if you happen to sit in the seats in front of the entrance, before the abr starts, you will have trouble to hear yourself even think.

And the girl with dreadlocks is a very cool person. Really.

The food here is ehh..the outdoor seating is great especially if it's nice out, which it was when I went. Had the chicken tacos, which were just ok, but the $3 frozen margaritas definitely made up for it. Good spot to check out, if you want to get your buzz on for cheap.
