My friend got me a haircut for a Christmas present and it was the best present I have ever gotten because I have found Terry! He's amazing! I LOVE how much HE loves to cut my hair. It's like watching an artist work on a masterpiece. I trust him completely do do what he thinks is best and I am NEVER disappointed. I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair before. You know you have an awesome hair cut when STRANGERS compliment you. And to top it off he's just sweet as pie and I enjoy the fact that he can give me a beautiful haircut and we can talk about anything or everything. Needless to say Terry is the best thing that's every happened to my hair life! Go see him....you will leave happy and looking awesome.
On a side note, Scotty answers the phone now and he's awesome. Very sweet, professional and organized. I look forward to talking to him whenever I call. Overall I LOVE BLO SALON and you will too! -

Three words for you: Don't go here.
It started off good: I was having one of those days where you decide come hell or high water you MUST get your haircut that day. I called beforehand and the receptionist said one of the hairstylists could see me in a few hours. Awesome!
After I arrived everything went downhill. I'm trying to grow out my hair and all I wanted was the back of my hair trimmed and shaped up so it didn't look so mullet-y. Nothing complicated to do and understand.
But between the hairdresser...
1) scolding me on numerous occasions throughout the cut on a) how I wasn't giving him good enough instructions on what I wanted done with my hair (hell, I even brought in a picture!) and b) that my desire to grow out my hair was unrealistic and that "he couldn't work miracles"
2) wreaking of smoke
3) acting like he'd rather be doing his taxes than cutting hair that day
4) leaving my hair partially wet
... it was an all out disaster.
The hairstylist also cut my hair SUPER slow - not in a "I'm trying to be precise" way but more like a "what's this sharp object I'm holding in my hand?" way. In fact, he dropped his scissors three or four times during the course of the hour. I don't know if the dude was having nicotine withdrawals or was hungover, but this is unacceptable and certainly did not engender my confidence in his abilities.
I walked away afterward and literally felt shitty thanks to how the hairstylist treated me and the experience as a whole. And although the cut itself wasn't half bad, I've gotten far better in the city for the same price.
I'm giving this place two stars only because the salon itself was clean and I dig the black & white mod decor. -

Blo Salon is a classy-but-unpretentious salon in Hayes Valley. The prices are great and the service is awesome.
Damian is my hair artist at Blo and always does an amazing job on this red mop on my head. My hair is difficult: a combination of frizzy, curly, wiry, wavy, and straight hairs adorn my head and present a real challenge to anyone working with my Brillo. Damian's always found a way to tame my mane. We've worked on a number of different creative styles, but even when I just want everything chopped off and short, Damian is obsessive about clipping each hair perfectly. He'ls always got great suggestions on products that are tuned to the specific style I've selected. I've also seen some of the coifs of women who were in Damian's chair before me and they always look fabulous. I highly recommend Damian! -

Well, I am a bit baffled why this place has almost 5 stars. Granted it is in a cute location and has friendly staff but I can't imagine giving it more than 3 stars on a good day. I do have a lot of hair and it is semi curly but I have been to plenty of places that have made my hair look ah-mazing, I must say. I have still yet to find this place in San Francisco.
My complaints:
The stylist was very friendly but took almost an hour to cut my hair. He kept asking me random questions about my hair which I wasn't sure if I should take as suggestions or just inquiry. The shampoo was nothing to rave about either. But worst of all.... he left my hair WET! Are you kidding me? After several times of telling him "No I never blow dry my hair curly because it looks like I stuck my finger in a socket", he still attempted to - unacceptable. If I am paying $75+ for a haircut, I better come out of the salon looking damn good, not like a wet dog.
The cut looks good dry but overall I have no plans to return this salon. The search continues... -

This review is for Dustin.
I was very hesitant to try out a Hayes Valley style salon. They always seemed a bit intimidating to me. Dustin relieved all that intimidation with his calm demeanor and professionalism.
He gave me a great cut. Followed my instructions but also helped me with making some new adjustments to my hair.
The result a great hair cut that was close enough to what I am used to but with a few changes. All in all spending an afternoon getting your hair cut by Dustin is a pleasure.
Only downside no one offered me champagne! -

This review is for Terry specifically - I haven't been to Blo yet.
I've had a grey streak since age 17 and have been dyeing my hair ever since. 90% of the time, I buy a box and dye it at home.
Terry spotted me agonizing over the boxes of dye at the grocery store and spent 10 minutes helping me select the right one. Considering how well he treated a random stranger, I have no doubt he works wonders for his customers.
His advice was spot on, his knowledge extensive, and next time I splurge on a salon color it will be at Blo. -

This review is for David L., who just got hired at Blo.
He has been my personal hairstylist for 6 years now. He knows the trends before they're coming, he can razor cut like no one's business and he never lets me live my life looking boring or average.
He has also used the 'stage' name "Nikki" -

My New Year's resolution is to carry out a do-it-yourself extreme makeover, Jeff A. style, in the course of the new year. So far I think I'm doing pretty well. Here is my to-do list:
Undouche wardrobe...check.
Put faggy earrings back in, ramp up to 12 gauge...check.
Shave junk...check (oops. better check again.)
Pluck unibrow...check.
Whiten choppers (on sale for $299)...check.
Lose weight/tone body...working on it, but all these Big Montanas are getting in the way.
Get sleezy titanium ring...check.
Ditch Supercuts...BIG CHECK.
So, on the advice of Yelpers, I went to see Brandon at Blo. I must admit, I was a little skeptical at first, because he didn't seem campy enough to give me a really good style. But I put my trust in Brandon and told him to look at me as a blank canvas and just mold, shape and sculpt my dome as if it were a mound of play dough.
Well, approximately one hour and fifty minutes later, having endured a debate about which childhood play substance is more tasty (play dough or glue paste), plus a number of extended, graphically detailed plot summaries of spanish tranny porn films, I finally emerge from Brandon's chair a new man, with a quaff for the ages. I LOVE this haircut! And Brandon was super attentive, giving personal attention to each and every snip and cut to make sure that the end result is perfect. I swaggered out of Blo a little closer to realizing my New Year's resolution and miraculous Jeff A.-style metamorphosis.
(Brandon doesn't take credit though, so bring your cash.) -

I went here after buying a Bloomspot coupon. I had the first appointment of the day. My stylist showed up 15 mins late and didn't even say anything to me when he first arrived. He went downstairs - presumably to pee since he came up with his fly unzipped. After he'd been cutting my hair for a while, he did apologize for being late, but added that the reason was that he was SUPER hung over from being out late last night. Really instilled confidence. The cut was actually ok. Not amazing but not bad. Just unprofessional.

Jenny is my hair's savior. She's an amazing stylist and knows how to work with your hair and your style. I rarely can find someone who knows how to work with my wavy mess of a hair without making it look like a giant lump of wave. She actually gives it some shape & style.
As far as the ambiance, the salon has great ambiance and random salon music. I also appreciated the good magazine selection. -

I have never truly believed in the power of a good haircut; to be honest, I'm cheap and my hair is not all that bad on its own. About 5 months ago (probably on a payday) I decided to go to blo. Brandon, quiet, gorgeous, and intense started in on my hair. After dropping around $80 I got into my car and fell in love with my head. Perfect cut. Perfect scenario (while the rest of the stylists and patrons gossiped and blabbed, we sat in a peaceful silence - all I have ever wanted in a hairdresser/man).
I am now sitting at my computer 5 months after the best haircut, being the best because of its long lasting perfection, after my second cut with Brandon. Again, easy, pleasant, and a true departure from the stereotypical values traditionally expected in the trenches of the beautification process. Great. He worked with me, cut my hair, and then styled it above and beyond my expectations. I have also recommended 3 friends to try blo out, all a success so far. -

Well, Emily left to open her own salon so check out Moxie's, just down the street from Blo.
Emily is the best at looking at your hair and the shape of your face & head and turning you into a stah! Plus, she's a cool chick who is fun to chat with about movies, life, food, whatever. And she's bald. Only downside is she's expensive! -

When I moved from Palo Alto to San Francisco I left behind my hair stylist over at Faux Salon. Now, I've been loyal to him for over 9 years but the commute from the city to Campbell is a tough one to make.
Thank god for my buddy Dan Suda who is a stylist at Blo, this hip, trendy salon is smack dab in Hayes Valley. When you enter Blo you'll likely be greeted by the friendly staff who can sometimes carry a "cooler than thou" attitude. But don't let it scare you. They're the cool kids in high school who always were in the know. Yeah, those kids.
My hair is thick, it's straight, and has this mature salt and pepper color. I really don't have too many styles that I can choose from since I prefer it cut short.
Dan is a perfectionist, he comes from the old school of stylists. He uses scissors to shape, thin, and cut my hair into a style that I love. I never got a compliment on my hair until I started seeing Dan. You can bet your bottom dollar I was pretty impressed. Hmmm...make that floored. Yeah, I was floored. You couldn't wipe that grin off of my face for the rest of the night.
I don't venture to Hayes Valley on a regular basis, but since I started visiting Dan I'm going to have to.

Followed my guy *sigh*, Stephens here. As you may know, he's my hair hero.
I sort of miss the quiet of Shear Bliss (there's some really loud talking stylist that ruins my tranquil enjoyment of having my hair touched for a couple hours) and the lack of clientele competing for air and space in the salon. I also miss the Aveda products. And I really miss a normal shampoo sink. WTH?! Shampoos used to be relaxing. What do you mean I have to hold up the bowl with my shoulders?
That said, there's some great energy here. The place is happening. The music is random and fab. And most importantly, my stylist is now beaming. Happy stylist = happy hair. -

Every single time Terry cuts my hair and enhances my color, strangers on the street walk up to me and compliment me on how awesome my hair looks. Last week after I got a cut and highlight at Blo, someone at a retail shop in the city said, "Your hair really suits you." Thanks, man! Not only does Terry do a fantastic job, he's got an amazing and empathetic personality. I consider him a good friend now. The location of the salon is ideal, right in Hayes Valley. And Terry does a great job with curly hair. I found out about Terry through a friend who comes all the way from a state in the midwest to continue to get her hair cut and colored by Terry. Talk about loyalty to your stylist!
I originally tried "another" salon in the city where the people were snooty and made me feel unwelcome. When I found Terry at Blo Salon, I knew I'd found a good fit. He does a great job with blow outs too for those girls with curls who sometimes wonder what its like on the other side... -

The best way to tell if you had a good hair cut is by working with it the day after. That was some of the best advice a stylist gave me and I use it every time and can say that I really enjoyed this salon. My hair is not the easiest to manage, it's thick and has a mean mind of its own but I was in and out shy of an hour and the day after was a cinch to style.
When I called the availability was incredible. The appointment was with Jen and she was great, she gave a nice cut and thinned out the thickness by throwing in some layers. She had mentioned that she also does coloring, so naturally I'm already planning for the next visit. I was really impressed not only with the cut but how quickly she was able to wet, cut and style it. I was in and out seriously in about an hour which with this head of hair an hour an half is lucky. The salon itself is super cute, it's basically 9 chairs enclosed by large windows. The atmosphere is comfortably cool with simple prices. I recommend Jen and now know I have found a great salon to use!Listed in: Beautification-SF Style

ok so I change my hair a lot, A LOT. and it's hard to find someone who can interpret my poor explanations of what I would like done to my hair. I've also been more or less a blond for many years. The first time I went to see Jenny, I told her I wanted something fun and different and she really delivered! she suggested that since the first time she saw me she's wanted to make me a brunette and chop off my bangs...what?!
we went with it. she made sure I was comfortable every step of the way and gave me many chances to back out. She's perfectly chatty, friendly, smart, and doesn't make you feel like you're not as hip as the rest of the frickin cool kids.
back to the cut/color: my hair has never been so healthy, shiny and bouncy EVER! I love my new cut and she was totally right about the color! and Jenny gave me what felt like an hour scalp and neck massage!! I love her. I'm hooked. -

A cute little salon in Hayes Valley. My hair stylist, Stephens, just moved here from Shear Bliss so I paid him a visit a couple of weeks ago. I have been seeing him for a year and a half and he rocks! The new space seems a little louder and it is hard to have a conversation with just your stylist without everyone listening in. I don't really mind since I have nothing to hide and generally try to not tell embarrasing stories about myself.
Stephens is GREAT with thick, wild Asian hair, for those of you with the same affliction/fortune -- you choose how to look at it.
Five stars for Stephens!!!
Minus one star for BLO not having a receptionist and never picking up the phone.
Note: Stylists have their own hours and sometimes come in even on the salon's "closed" days. -

I followed Jenny here from Shear Bliss and LOVE HER. Over the past year she has completely transformed my hair to long, wavy, blah, to a really cute, short, sheik, bob. I don't go two days without getting compliments on my hair from complete strangers and now, even my boyfriend and roommate (a man) get their hair cut by her too. She really listens to what you want and makes sure what you want will work for you (she's completely honest if what you want will look like crap). She's fun to talk to and gives amazing head massages.
My only complaint, I hate the sinks, they kill my neck! -

Tracy R. has been doing my hair for over a year (thank god) and I've finally ended the search for my perfect stylist!
I followed Tracy to Blo from her previous salon and would follow her wherever she went from now on! I doubt she'll be going anywhere though, this salon is sexy and in a great location!
Tracy listens to exactly what I want done, and then does it better than I knew could be possible!
Sometimes, I go to her without a clue of what I want, and she kills it every time knowing exactly what works with my face/style/and personality!
Did I mention she does all my friends hair, and my Husbands hair as well now?!
We'll never need marriage counseling because she keeps us looking like fresh new babes all the time.
Thanks Tracy! -

Following the last reviewer, I took advantage of the convenience of Blo being so close to my house and decided to give them a try, after not being able to get a last-minute appointment at either Edo or Zip Zap in the Lower Haight (I'm just impulsive as hell). The receptionist assigned me to Brandon B, who just relocated back to SF after working in the entertainment industry down in LA and the big, super high end salons in New York. I was so impressed with this guy's attention to detail, the way he knew how to work with my hair, and especially how he listened to me describe the style I want to transition into (from the razor-cut shag back into longer layers that look good in my naturally wavy hair).
Brandon totally articulated the compromise I wanted to do - a straight, super sleek style for the party I was throwing that night with a cut that will translate into growing out my layers as I wanted later - and I think both of us were impressed with what he was able to pull off. My hair is thick and wavy, but a pain in the ass since it's not uniformly wavy throughout, and he knew how to cut it and reshape the layers so that it will grow out better.
With only a single exception (a personal friend back in LA), I've never been so impressed. Brandon has mad skills, crazy attention to detail and makes you feel like a million bucks. After all the compliments I got that night, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone. -

This review is for Kaori. I followed her from the Japanese beauty salon at Japantown. She's great, one of the best hairstylist I've ever had.
Another hairdresser took a look at my haircut about 5 months after she cut it and said that it was a really great cut. The haircuts I got from Kaori were more japanese/asian style... I'd still go to her now, except I moved away from SF.
She's great! Really careful, detail oriented, finds out exactly what you want, and gives it to you. The only thing negative is sometimes I found my hair a little too thinned out on the bottom, but that was corrected when I specified I didn't want it too thinned out. -

Well, I was looking for someone who knew what to do with thick hair, and thanks to all of the fabulous reviews for Courtney, I finally left a salon sans helmet head = .
I came in with a few pictures of styles I vaguely liked, but the intention to continue growing out my hair. I also wanted a color change but didn't want to choose the shade myself, ha. I really appreciated her ability to suggest tones and styles that work for my tones and whatnot.
The result: I feel like Zooey Deschanel and my hair actually looks longer because, firstly, she suggested a gorgeous chocolate shade that makes my hair shiny and, secondly, she was meticulous and patient in removing as much weight and yucky ends as possible but leaving enough weight to keep it from shrinking up and getting poofy. Also--she gave me bangs to die for to curb that urge to change your hair while growing it out.
Also, I can actually afford to keep it up because a cut and color was only $135 (very reasonable for her patience and skill I feel) and customers are entitled to complimentary bang trims whenever things get unruly. I highly recommend Courtney and this salon if you are looking for a stylist you can trust to get it right. -

I followed Sheila to Blo Salon from her previous place, when she decided to go out on her own. She's fantastic!! It's tough to find a good wax and she does it. She's got a great personality and makes you feel at ease. She also has a website to book your appointment at http://www.iwaxsf.com. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking!

I don't exactly consider myself to have a head-turning presence for the most part, but every time I have my hair done by Courtney, heads turn. Serious....it's surreal. She's got cut, color and styling on lock down. Plus she's really good at both listening to what you want, and giving helpful suggestions.
Always good for an ego boost. -

Courtney is a great stylist. When I first met her I already had a feeling that she would know how to cut thick straight asian hair. Ive tried about 5 different salons in the city and I immediately felt at home.
She gave me long layers without looking like Jennifer Aniston. I've been here twice and I plan to go back next week for another cut and color. She's no frills or thrills because she knows how to get the job done. I leave the salon feeling confident that i'm up-to-date and my hair is cut perfectly. My layers are easier to style at home and I feel like my hair is lifted where it needs to be. No more weighed down and uneven layers.
Thank god. -

This review is regarding my haircut from David L.
I haven't had a haircut in some time. I have had the fortunate luxury of growing up with friends in the high end mens haircare. I am not what you would call a stylist snob, but I like a good haircut. Who wouldn't?! It makes you feel good because you look good....well at least my hair does.
David did a great job. He took his time and did it right. He knew what kind of haircut I want, right off the bat. There is no doubt that I will return again.
For anyone a little nervous about a new stylist...I wouldn't worry about these guys. -

I started going to Blo when I moved to Hayes Valley a couple years ago. A friend of mine in the 'hood recommended it.
I don't live in Hayes Valley anymore, but I'm still going to Blo. Dan cuts my hair for $50 and does an awesome job. I'm don't think I've ever seen another guy (customer) in Blo, so I don't know how well the other stylists do with mens hair. What I do know is that Dan does an awesome job with mine. -

I used to get my hair cut by Stephens at Shear Bliss, then followed him here to Blo. He continues to deliver at his new location and is still the best at cutting curly hair. I get my hair cut only every 3-4 months, and he is always able to whip it back into shape with his excellent cutting skills. Of course, he's still as nice as ever and makes me feel at home. I'm glad that I can continue to count on Stephens for a reliable haircut.
The movies/shows on the huge plasma TV are always entertaining---think my favorite was the National Geographic series. -

Lisa is awesome! I never get my haircut from anyone besides my aunt - whose just awesome btw...but I needed a change. I went with a totally different haircut - one in the few hours since I have had - has definitely grown on me =) Lisa was super attentive, and knows her hair! She's been doing hair for twenty years now...i will def be going back to see her!
Blo is super trendy and i love the lollipop jar - just adds a bit something to the place. -

I got a pretty good cut here. Brandon was my man... He delivered, as all of the other reviewers promised. And I was extremely grateful that he could squeeze me in last minute on a Friday afternoon.
It just took a long time. Like, an hour and a half. I've heard similar things about other stylists here. Which could be a very very good thing, but I like to get in and get out. I guess that's the legacy of being a former Supercuts dude...
If you want a slightly hipper environment, check out Oxenrose (good luck getting a last minute appointment though). And if you want a cheaper and faster (but just as good) cut, check out Johnson Livingston at Blown Away. -

Jenny (or as I call her J Scho) is THE best. I have been going to her for a couple of years now and have recommended her to all of my friends (guys and girls) even people that I don't know (I do this because I get so many compliments every time I get a new hair-do from her).
She's really talented with the scissors and colors. She'll tell you her honest opinion on what will look good or bad. The best part is she won't give you the exact hair cut that every other girl is wearing.
The salon is ok, there are waaay to many hair stylist for the space (that's why I gave 4 instead of 5) but since Jenny is there with her fun outfits and amazing talent I go where ever she goes. -

I love Erin at Blo. She's helped me actually obtain a hair cut that I can maintain. See, I'm really dumb when it comes to my hair, so the easier the better. Erin cuts my hair so I can blow dry it out myself every day, and it looks decent about 95% of the time, which is a huge improvement for me. Also, she's awesome with highlights, and listens to you to achieve exactly what you want.
And ladies, she does wedding hair and makeup, and is very reasonably priced for that. Huge bonus points for booking two of my attendants, my mother-in-law and one family friend the morning of my wedding, and staying patient throughout the entire process.
- 1 star, though, for their uncomforable seating arrangement while waiting for your stylist. Wood benches against a window are not cozy and comfy. -

All the staff is pretty friendly, between themselves and other customers, and especially when they see the great job that COURTNEY did to my hair!
I highly recommend her- i get the feeling she really just wants you to have good looking hair, whatever look that may be. She's done a fantastic job cutting my thick, long wavy, dry hair a few times and i hope she can be my hairdoctor for a good long while. -

Consistently the best haircuts I've ever had!
I started going here when I first moved to San Francisco and I was lucky enough to get Lisa to cut my hair for quite a while. Unfortunately she left, and so did I. I'm not sure why I assumed that she would be the only skilled person there, but I learned my lesson after bouncing around to several other places that were closer to me. Recently I decided to go back and saw Courtney who was professional and fun to talk to. She gave me her honest opinion and did exactly what I wanted her to do. The prices aren't bargain bin, but you get what you pay for and in my opinion the value gained from this place is well worth it. A+ -

I can't begin to explain how much of a relief it was to find LeAnne! Coming from years of less-than-impressive, flaky experiences with stylists, I am so happy to now have one that I trust completely to always give me a great look.
The great thing about LeAnne is her ability to see what will work for you, and combine it with what you had envisioned for yourself. I love that she is up front, and will tell you if something is not going to look good on your head...and, based on my past experiences with her, she is ALWAYS right! She's GREAT with color, and I've always been very happy with my cut.
The salon is super cute, and isn't intimidating to walk-into. The other stylists are friendly...the whole place has a great vibe.
The last time I saw LeAnne, I literally told her to do whatever she wanted (I TRUST HER THAT MUCH)...And, as always, I love my end result! I have never received as many compliments on my hair as I have gotten since I started seeing her over a year ago.
Not even moving out of the city will keep me from seeing LeAnne. My happiness is worth the trip! -

I'll spare everyone the extended story about all my bad haircuts and how I got here, but I was basically scheduled for an appointment with LeAnne and I took it without looking for recommendations. I just trusted that Blo would hook me up with someone good since I've had nothing but the best service and my old hairdresser no longer works here. Long story longer, LeAnne did a fantastic job and it's the first time I've been truly thrilled with my hair cut in a LOOOOONG time. 5 Stars for both the stylist and the salon. Thanks guys!!

I have been going to Erin for 8 years. She is the only person I trust with my hair. She is amazing with cuts AND color. She knows exactly what I want and always does excellent work. I often like to change up my look and Erin is always there to bounce ideas off of. She is very in tune with her clients' personalities and knows what we want.
I will follow Erin from salon to salon (as long as she stays in the Bay Area). -

I've found my new go-to San Franciscan hair salon! Courtney was attentive and fun to talk to. I brought a picture of the style I wanted and Courtney replicated it (but making the necessary adjustments to make it suit me a little better). She layered my hair in a way that framed my face well and that played up my natural waves. I thought that she just styled it really well but, it's a week later, and it looks (almost) as good as it did then.
Also, I really appreciated the fact that they don't push you do buy any products. Funnily enough, I loved the product that Courtney used and ended up calling the salon to find out what she used. The receptionist was awesome; she took my number, asked Courtney what she used, and actually called me back! I'm sold on this place!
